Wm6.1 Services, and Wifi - General Questions and Answers

Hey,
I have 2 questions, i have done some googleing on both topics, and ill explain my results and confusion below.
But i was wondering:
Is it possible to have a application to run as part of the operating system, i use a application called CallCalander that runs, but it is still displayed in the task manager, and closed when i run Orbis Close Applications application, but i would like it to be a part of the system, like on windows where you have services, or something such as.
I tried to google this, but i got random results, and results aimed at windows OS, not the mobile version.
My second question is, there has been alot of information about this, but most post's and information i have found says it is not possible, or only possibly using WMWifiRouter, But i was hoping to use my phone as a Wireless card, and if possible when wireless is not available to use the 3G connection instead. Though i could use the Internet Sharing application built in to WM6.1 for the GPRS, but i was hoping that there was a automattic solution, that would switch when wifi is not available.
Also one of my laptops has bluetooth (And a wireless card, but if i can get a auto switch to 3g if wifi is not available, i dont see ill be using that card often), the other does not, so i deffonatly need it to be made available via USB, but if it also supported bluetooth that would be a excellent advantage.
Thank you for any help
Regards
Chris

Ok ignore my question about WiFi for future refrence WMWifiRouter works for using your device as a USB Dongle, as well as a host of other features, deffonatly recommend checking it out!!!
Though not had much chance to play with it, but still it works excellent with a few issues for when i get a phone call, or use the phone's data connection.
As for running an application as a service, still have no idea on that.

GPRS under control. is it possible?

Hi,
when the wifi signal is lost or activesync is dsconnected, my HTC TouchPro automatically tries to switch to GPRS connection. like when i start browser or messenger application it turns GPRS by default.
My question is: have anybody seen the application or tweak that would show the dialogue window BEFORE the gprs connection established, something like
"application XXX tries to use GPRS connection. and two buttons: Allow|Deny"
that's actually all we need to control GPRS expences, especially when in roaming. (yes, i know about "no data in roaming" app). sometimes it goes like this: you're sure you're online using wifi, and browse or download a film or music. BUT, in the middle of the process the wifi connection is lost, but you didn't notice it, the device switched to GPRS automatically without notice and questions, so the rest of your download becomes golden for you.
if there were such an app with a simple two-buttons-dialogue, life would be easier for all of us... is there?
I have been dreaming for the same thing for like years
actually i had the same problem,
i was browsing comfortably using wifi, but unknown to me, when the signal got interrupted, it switched to GPRS...
actually we would know if we look at the icon, but it's absurd to look at the icon every once in a while...
so, my solution was... to call up the provider, and have them terminate the GPRS service.
it might not serve you any good, since you probably still need the option to be able to go online when there's no wifi, but it served my purpose really well.
So, as i can see, it's not just my whim - it's really necessary add-on. are here some advanced members, coders who are able to solve it? afaik, this feature is not available in winmobile itself, but somehow implemented by Nokia, for example.
Got IT!
guys,
i found the solution. it appears much easier than i expected: just check the
start/settings/sounds and notifications/notifications - connection established. [i have localized WM version, menu strings in english version may vary from my translation. so, just find something close by meaning]
that's it!
good luck.
Yes, I always set it like that so I know it connects with GPRS/3G but I won't still ask me if I want to connect or not, the notification is only good way to try to disconnect it quickly... if I am the one using the phone but if someone else is using it, it's just worthless.

PDAnet + Powerbook + Hero= ??? I NEED to tether!

Has anyone gotten this particular set up to work. June Fabrics has released software for both the handset and desktop. I have been unable to get it to work. Their support is very limited, as you may or may not know (basically FAQ page, a few notes on installation and email for questions). I emailed and was told that it "should work with my current config" So far no dice.
As I have read, and continue to read, the post here for several weeks, I have yet to find anyone who has used my particular set up with success.
Additionally, so far I am unable to root my phone in order to use some other methods of tethering. I believe it may have to do with my software build which is included below:
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband: 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel: 2.6.27-533ce29d
Build: 1.29.651.1 CL69164 release-keys
SW version: 1.29.651.1
HW version: 0002
Two interesting things of note... when I tried to flash root (using Modoca) AND when I tried to install new firmware update... the phone reboots then freezes on the logo.
Any Ideas?
.... Bueller.... Bueller.... Bue...ller?
may be off topic
Have u tried just rooting your hero and putting the fresh Rom in it? It comes with WiFi tether..and it works flawlessly with my laptop or desktop computer...no need for pda net...just a thought
root it and use wifi tether (either via google code v1.70pre1 or via fresh 1.0 preinstalled)
+1 for Wifi Tether. It's SO much easier than PDANet.
Well, PDANet works with my MacBook running Snow Leopard. WiFi tether works but isn't the best option. It causes the battery to get really hot and drain faster than it can be charged. So even if you have it plugged up, it'll eventually die. Happened to me before.
WiFi tether is a godsend for those with laptops. Really cuts the codrds on laptops, and with such simplicity too.
I love the app. Bam screen touched andconnexted to internet that ithink is faster than home. all while riding in the car.
I have a G4 iBook, and I haven't been able to get PdaNet to work either. The app on the Hero loads fine, and connects ok, but when I choose "Connect" from the menu bar PdaNet icon on the Mac, it just hangs on the spinning beach ball of doom until I unplug the USB cable.
The June Fabrics support is useless. They sent me some snippets from their FAQ and told me "it should work". I sent them loads of technical details from the system logs and USB debugging info (unsolicited), and they never even bothered to reply to me. I *REALLY* wish another player could write an app to do this. I have zero problem paying for a good app (especially if they also have good support).
WiFi tether is not so great. The encryption does not work, and even if it did work its only WEP which is not really even worth using. I'm not going to conduct my web browsing unencrypted to be shared with the world. Plus the heat and battery issues. Bluetooth would be better, but isn't available on our ROM version. USB tethering is the way to go, its a shame that there's no reliable way to do this on a Mac.
In the mean time, I'm still paying $50 a month for my stupid Sprint USB data card. I was really hoping to ditch that bill when I upgraded to the Hero. A Linux computer in the palm of my hand, and it can't even perform one of the most basic Linux tasks.
Bluetooth is available for internet sharing. Pair devices, adjust settings on computer, and then enable mobile connection sharing on your hero. Also, WiFi tether has more than wep encryption available. Your other option is to tether, then set up dial up connection dial #777, and enable mobile sharing. Give it a shot; search the forum or pm me with questions.

If you are having trouble rooting, you're missing something. Could be as simple as a missing space in your command line. Keep trying. with 1.5 you should be able to use flashrec.

Well first of all you can monitor the connections to your handset and if you see someone connect simply kick them off. It even vibrates and alerts you upon connection.
Second, even if it is WEP unless there is some hacker nobody is going to go through it. Sure it isn't that hard to crack wep but the common person doesn't really walk around with a laptop out trying to hack into wep connections, although seeing a cell phone might interest them, who knows.
I have got PDAnet installed on my computer and it works perfectly fine, first time i tried (vista).
If you are referring to your hero as the linux computer, then you are wrong because it is working perfectly fine. Has data doesn't it? I don't understand how tethering a cell phone is one of the most basic tasks in linux.

HTC CM Wifi Internet Sharing - Question...

Hello everyone,
Forgive me if this has already been asked, but after searching and searching thoroughly I was unable to find a solution.
I have the T Mobile HTC HD2, the phone is better than any iPhone I ever owned. (Just had to get that out... )
I have a question concerning the HTC CM Wifi Internet Sharing. I installed the app, ran it without any issues. The signal was picked up by one of my laptops. I was able to connect and surf the web over 3G, pretty quick I must say...
The issue I am having is, since connecting that one time, I have not been able to see the phone as a router since. When I run the app and choose T-Mobile data, the 3G pops up. The wireless antenna icon pops up and the app says it is ready to receive incoming connections. BUT, I am unable to see this from any of my wireless devices.
My questions are, is there any specific procedure to get this to run correct? Do I have to disable wireless on the HD2? Is there some WinMo 6.5 firewall running? I know others have experienced this, but I am unable to track down a solution.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
mcv50
Are you running the app through Settings-All Settings-Connections-Wifi Internet Sharing? Or running the WifiRouter app?

I am running the app through Settings-All Settings-Connections-Wifi Internet Sharing
After i installed the cab, this is the only place I could find a way to launch the app.
Why is there another way?
I downloaded a random wifi sharing app and had the same problem, then found XDA-Tom_Codom CM Wifi Internet Sharing VGA. Worked like a charm. I would uninstall and try that one.
SxyCupcake, thanks for the suggestion.
I uninstalled, then installed the XDA-Tom_Codon CM Wifi Internet Sharing VGA.cab you suggested. I get the same result. I am rebooting right now to see if that may help...
After rebooting, I get the same thing. It almost seems like something is blocking the WiFi Transmit antenna signal or maybe it is not activating correctly... Might be a registry setting or something.
I may have fudged up some setting using BsB Tweaks or XT Hack Beta2... I might wind up just doing a complete restore and start from scratch.
Still doesn't work. I will check back often and post a solution if I figure it out.
Thank you,
mcv50
Q: My PC or Laptop is not seeing the SSID.
A: For the people having trouble seeing the network, make sure your pc displays adhoc connections and not just access points.
Now it is working...
Moved as not software release.

Standalone GPS on xv6700; Solved?

I want to say I love this site and have learned alot. I have tried for quite a time to get GPS to work on the xv6700, tho it seems much disinformation has been spread as far as a GPS being within. I have torn down this phone to see for myself if the MSM6500 was in this, which it is. Therefore I believe it does have this ability. I recently installed a program called WPS by Skyhook, which is a Wireless Positioning System. Now just a footnote; my phone has no carrier, I only use it for surfing the internet with wifi. To utilize WPS the site tells me I would need an active internet connection, however it stills works with no connection!!! It seems as if I have gotten the internal gps to wake up. I use Open Mobile Maps and it works excellent. I pickup satellites with Google Maps just to test at home (so far as many as 10 satellites). Can somebody else please duplicate this to verify exactly what is going on here? I just want to emphasize that this is with NO CONNECTION to ANYTHING!!!

Diagnostics app for data connections

Hello folks
I have to support customers (via email & phone) with 3G connection problems and it would be really useful for me if they could install an app which gives some feedback about why the connection isn't working.
For instance something that could output a message like...
connecting to wap.myapn.com
authenticating...
etc
Then this way, I might get an idea of where things are going wrong.
It would be good if it could do something similar for wifi connections too.
Currently, things either work or don't and it's very difficult to troubleshoot.
Does anyone know of such an app?
Cheers
Rog
