So I finally rooted my phone this weekend. And today I wanted to take advantage of some cool themes. So I downloaded the Macdroid v2.2 ADP1.1 theme and renamed it update.zip. Now my phone is stuck on the android boot screen. It just continues to load and load... I have tried wiping my phone and it still reloads and reloads. I can change the update file because there is no way to mount my SD card. Any suggestions? Please?
I guess what im really asking is, is there any way to mount my sd card without actually pressing the mount tab in the notifications menu? My pc recognizes the removable disk, but will not let me look at the sd card. This way I can change the update.zip
Do you have a card reader? Or something else that takes an sd card, such as a digital camera?
were you using ADP or RC30 on your phone. If you were using modified RC30 and installed ADP theme, that would mess it up.
If you followed instructions to root, you should have also update boot with HardSPL and Not sure ifyou made a backup. if you did, you can fastboot recover it.
Otherwise, redo everything and you may need to use another method to load files on your Sd card.

Yeah, at home. I was thinking that I would need to delete it from the card that way.

I had this same problem myself, once you access your card, put the RC29 back on it and flash it back. It will delete everything, making it factory default. You can then follow these steps again to re-root your phone.

I did follow the instructions correctly. I know this because I had already installed other themes before this one. Before I installed the theme update I did move all the files still on my card that I needed to gain root to a separate file on my card. Could that be the reason?

If you can boot into recovery mode, you can use adb to push files to your sdcard.
for example
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb push JFV1.41_ADP1.1.zip /sdcard/update.zip
I'm stuck on the "T.Mobile G1" splash screen after trying to run apps from my sd card
i used This Thread to do my mod and now im scared!!!
can someone help me???
i was rooted on rc 33 jf 1.42
i prepared my Class 6 8G card on my MAC using disk utility then 2 partitions half (3.43G or whatever)on FAT 1st then second half (3.whatever) as ext2
i was trying to do the apps to sd card thing and after doin all of the terminal commands (i got to the point right after seeing how much space i have on my sd card and internal) this was my next step:
busybox cp -a /data/app /system/sd
rm -r /data/app
ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
but after doin it it kept saying "no space on memory" or somethin so i went to internet cleared cache, forms, cookies, and history then restarted to make sure the terminal knew (noobish)
and it just froze at the G1 splash screen...HELP!!!!!
something like this happened to me when i downloaded a theme and i just reinstalled my original modded rc33 firm and it was fixed, but this time it did the same thing. i can still pull up the system recovery utility screen so im wondering if theres anything i can type in the log (alt+L) or console (alt+x)

Are you using one of the apps to sd ROM's? Without that all hell will break loose when you try apps to sd.
As for the poll, there's a reason why Google couldn't make apps run off the sd card. In order to do it they'd have to have the sd card be ext2 since you can't symlink to a FAT32 partition. Since windows computers won't recognize ext2 partitions that was a no-go, since, you know, 90% of people use windows. Also, look at what happens with the apps to sd hack when you take out the sd card. Suddenly apps that may or may not be running don't exist and, again, all hell breaks loose. Better to force people to hack their phones to get this working than to actually have the phone work that way when it can cause such severe problems.
EDIT: after looking briefly at the link, I see that the instructions you followed were for non-apps to sd ROMs. I see no reason why it didn't work but if you really don't feel that comfortable with it, you could always just flash one of the apps to sd ROMs and follow one of those(much easier) tutorials or even use my app to do it with the push of a button. Just remember, after moving them you MUST restart your phone for anything to work.
Whats the point of this poll?

that would be great to use your app. if i get my phoe fixed il try ur way (looks a LOT less likely to be screwed up by me). as you saw from the other thread it didn't call for a ROM and i followed the steps EXACTLY do you know of a way for me to fix this problem using the bootloader or power+home button screen? because those are the only two things i can use at the moment? 'fraid I'm not sure how to do this without an apps to sd ROM(I tried to do this myself originally and ended up giving up). But flashing one of them(LucidREM's, Haykuro's apps to sd or The Dude's apps to sd) should fix whatever's going on I'd think. From your commands it looks like anything that would be fixed from the recovery terminal was already correct. You probably won't have your apps anymore but since it looks like setting jf's up for apps to sd is what failed, they're probably already gone. From there running my app should work. Also, it wont let you move the apps to sd if anything isn't set up right so this shouldn't happen again.

For the ROMs, go to the Dream android development forum(what this thread is in) and go to LucidREM's sticky, or Haykuro's or The Dude of Life's thread. Haykuro's and The Dude's ROMs are for cupcake, Lucid's is a mod of the normal JF builds. Flashing the ROM is just a matter of putting the downloaded file from one of those posts, renaming it update.zip, placing it in the topmost directory on your sdcard, and pressing alt-w and then alt-s at the recovery screen. My app is called "apps to sd" and is available on this forum or as a donation version for $1 on the market.
by the way, anyone else think it's odd that the percentages in the poll add up to 125%?
EDIT: now 120%
I tried searching for help, but can to a dead end. After I installed JF 1.5 and the phone rebooted, it just hangs on the G1 Tmobile boot screen.... I can restart it and load into recovery but get E: cant mount dev/block/.. I also tried the DREAIMG.NBH but when ever I try to load it (Power+Camera) I get "No Image Found!"... I dont know if it cant find the recovery_testkeys or if it was screwed up during the installation process... It does boot so im guessing no brick.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated
*EDIT*: SOLVED, I downloaded the DREAIMG-29.img, renamed the file with a .nbh extension, and bought a SD READER to MAC 4gig San Disk Card. IT ENDED UP BEING THE NEW CARD and READER THAT MADE IT POSSIBLE!
http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAIMG-RC29.zip (Rename DREAIMG.NBH..
Hope this helps this pesky problem
maybe
It might be that it's not reading the sdcard right to read image to reflash. But also some people have been saying some apps are causing it not to go past the g1 screen seem the most common factor is desktop theme apps are doing this people have been able to remove these apps useing umbuntu to remove these apps and all goes back to normal.
Hmm.. umbuntu has never been a real good friend to me.. but yea the SD card was my last possible indication. I thought that after doing a factor reset under recovery deleted the apps...? Is there a way to just reflash to stock rc 33 or rcc 29? Im sort of new to the Android Dev scene... Could the Recover_Testkeys.img image be causing an issue also?
Thanks
Edit: Iv heard that the type of SD card might be an issue (Transend, San Disc, ect.)? ..... I dont know though.
deleted comment... accidental duplicate post
Try a wipe. I had the same thing happen to me only i did something dumb, but once i flashed it, it worked again.
It happened to me today, It stayed on the Android screen for about 30 minutes So I removed the battery and turned it on with home+power button,
did a wipe, and applied the update again.
I dunno if doing the wipe helped but it works now
By wipe you mean recovery then (Alt+W).. Iv done it about 10 times. I keep getting the "cant mount SDCARD" and "dev/block/mmcblk0" after attempting to install update.zip.
Any other thoughts..? thanx
please tell me you have adb set up. if so i can try to help you otherwise i can't do much for you
Tubaking182, To be honest, i dont know for sure if I did set up adb... Could you please explain what it is and if it is still possible to set it up? If you could help me, It would be GREATLY appreciated... im about to give up.... such a pain in the a**
Bump.. for help issues
they may have changed the vold.conf in order to support A2SD, but that would prevent the phone from recognizing SD cards that are not partitioned.
I was rooting my HTC Magic 32A and had the same problem when I choose [Flash zip from sdcard] at RA-hero-v1.6.2
The message was "cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0"
Then I choose [Other > Move recovery.log to SD] at RA-hero-v1.6.2
And went back to choose [Flash zip from sdgard] and then it works.
Ok Guys.
I created this thread cause in the JACHero thread on at least every page everyone asks how to install it, what am I doing wrong, and why is it broken.
So let me give you step by steps of what exactly I have done for me and others to run Hero with out a problem. I will also create a thread with step by step on how to use Ubuntu Linux Live distro to partition your card.
Things you will need to make this work.
Your Brain
G1 Phone
SD Card reader
And the files I included in this thread.
My phone right now is running.
JACHero 2.3
NEW SPL
cyanogens recovery 1.2
8gb class 6sd with Swapper(Swap file on ext2 sd)
setCPU slightly overclock.
Results.
Ever since I did my new Buttons, and the SPL I included in this write up, I have not had one problem flashing any hero rom at all on my phone, nor did I ever have problem actually running hero roms.
So here goes.
First before you partition your card or do anything make sure your card is at least portioned to fat32, don't worry about any other partitions yet.
OK once you do that go ahead and take the radio zip file I am including in this thread and flash it on your phone.
But first make sure you don't already have new radio installed which is 2.22.19.26I THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. To check what radio you have, power off your phone, and power it on while holding the camera button.
If you do have new radio you can continue on to flashing the new SPL.
Flashing your SPL. (PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE NEW BUTTONS INSTALLED)
Ok this is where it might get a little tricky, and you might require a SD card reader I know I did and frankly I think this is the best way to do it and I recommend every time you do put a new update on your sd card to update your phone do it through a card reader.
Now after you flash your SPL you might or I should say more then likely will get stuck at the T-Mobile G1 screen, this also might happen after new radio flash in the previous step. If this is the case do not freak out it's normal and your phone is not bricked, but this is why having a sd card reader is important.
Ok so Here is what you do after you have flashed new Radio and SPL(Note:The steps on running Linux live distro and using it to partition your card is coming up). Boot up Live distro of Ubuntu, when its done booting, go ahead and go into the partitioning program while your sd card is hooked up in the computer.
Go ahead and set up two partitions at this time. One EXT3, and of course the other one Fat32. Your ext3 partition doesn't have to be all that big. I actually have mine set up to 512.
Once you are done creating partitions, go ahead and put the latest JACHero on the FAT32 portion and flash away (don't forget to rename to update.zip).
At this point if you follow all of these steps there is no way possible that your phone should not boot right into the system to run the initial setup.
These steps pretty much walk you through steps as if you were starting with a phone that has completly nothing on it.
Also the first boot up after flashing the new ROM, might take a few mins at the HTC screen.
Once your phone loads up and you go through the setup process go ahead and run swapper, it should be an APP that's already pre-installed.
Once you run swapper go into the setting and change the location of your swap file from /sdcard/swapfile.swp to /system/sd/swap.swp
Here is the reason why. The default location is your FAT32 partition. If you all of a sudden mount your phone to the computer with the swap file running on FAT32 you will corrupt your sd card, and then you will have to wipe and reinstall everything.
If you set the location of your swap file on /system/sd/ that's actually your ext2/3 partition and never gets mounted and you never have to turn swapper off.
Well I hope this helps some of you out. I will be writing the walk through on loading up live distro of Linux and partitioning your card sometime today.
I have used this method on a couple different phones and it has worked each time. Also I really recommend installing cyanogens recovery 1.2, as its an excellent way of making a back up of your phone and doing future flashing.
If there is anything anyone thinks that could be done better feel free to post in here.
Remember different people have different ways. I have posted this way cause it has worked for me on my phone and two other phones I setup, and each time there was no hicups.

DISCLAIMER:
I am not responsible for anything that you might have done to your phone by following these directions. Like I mentioned before so far every time I have used this method, I have had nothing but success.
While I can appreciate this topic, I think you need to speak with less certainty that this will always work properly the first time.
For example - I'm coming from the Ramjet ROM, and the process that I have taken.
Freshly formatted 4gb sd card with a 700mb EXT3 partition, the rest is fat32.
Loaded JACHero 2.3 and renamed update.zip
Wiped twice
Installed ROM
Phone went into boot loop - allowed to run for 10 minutes
Removed battery
Attempted to install ROM a second time
Boot loop again - allowed to run 10 minutes
Wiped again
Installed ROM
Boot loop again - allowed to run 10 minutes
It seems strange, as going from a standard JAC build previously I was able to just wipe, wipe, install and had JACHero 2.1 working without a hitch. I found this strange, as people were complaining about that build, but it seems 2.3 is what's giving me the most headache.
/shrug. Guess I'll go back to Ramjet.
Great post, dude. I've rooted my phone, flashed a few ROMs, including Haykuro's Hero, moved Rosie back to run on the phone instead of the SD card, overclocked and run Swapper. I was still a bit confused and hesitant to flash the JAChero ROM. I'm feeling better about it now. Gonna flash when I get home from work today.

I can completely see what you mean by that. But only reason I decided to make this, because two other phones that were having the exact same problems, started working after I did this.
They both had the same symptoms everyone else, and no one really knows where it came from.
So I made sure they had the right radio, then the right SPL, and every time I did something to the SD Card I killed the partitions completely not just format them.
But I destroyed the partition, recreated it and then formatted it to a file system of my choosing.
my g1 is fine ive flashed every rom here and never gotten stuck on boot loop, if anything the files youre downloading for recovery and spl must be corrupted try re downloading your radio file and spl's again.
Include Disclaimer
I like your post but here is something that I would add to your post.
Even though this has worked every time for you do not assume that it will work for every one, therefore make sure you put a disclaimer out there. As you may have seen before, there have been a lot of posters that have blamed others when their phones were either bricked or stuck in boot loops.
Remember....some people may do something wrong during a step and swear that they followed it perfectly and then blame you.
A detailed disclaimer could be of some help since a lot of people will be taking your post as LAW......
for somereason im not able to update my spl is it something u must do i keep gettin a veification faild message when im tryin to flash it wiht alt + s and i cant seem to update to jachero 2.3 im using a 1 g micro sd im really not sure whats going on i have the proper raido settings and everything. also im not really sure how to create 2 partitions on my memory card im running good ol windows vista
how fast is this running.
i tried it once without swapper and it was way to slow in my eyes in order to use at as an everyday phone.
hope you have something for me (is swapper this perfect solution?)
In my opinion the perfect solution is making a a linux swap partition on your sd card.
However last time I created a linux swap partition and created my swap file there after I rebooted my phone I got stuck at the G1 screen.
I think this might have been cause because of having three partitions on the card but I am not 100% sure.
So instead I just use swapper and make it mount the swap file on my ext3 partition which seems to make this rom run really freaking smooth.
Also I have noticed significant improvements of using ext3 vs ext2, but when research how the two different file systems work it makes sense why it would make a difference.
So to answer your question, is swapper the perfect solution? Im not sure if there is anyone perfect solution but I do know that this sure ass hell makes a huge difference in how your Hero rom runs.
for those having boot loops, how about help us help you, run ddms from sdktools and grab a log of whats going on, this way we can determine an issue, because those asking for help with bootloops and asking for help is like asking me to tell you whats wrong with your car over the phone. we cant tell if we cant see whats going on. so helps us, if you have adb and not the sdktools just type
Code:
adb logcat
this way we can see what your phones trying to do.
Excellent post! I wish I this was available yesterday when I did my first Hero ROM ever. The JAC thread is huugggeeee.

After installed 2.2.1 should I pop my SD card out and format it again on my computer?
Trying to do the 2.2.1 again.... Wish me luck!

Updating to the 2.2.1 again worked.
Ok, everything works!! Much thanks to Luckenbach for the moral support, and thanks to JAC and all the other guides that I linked in my process. So if anyone else is a noob like me you can do exactly what I did (I provided links for each step where I got it from) you should be ok.

Edit: Also changing location of swapper from your info helped a lot! Thanks, I had the SD problem when I pulled out my SD card to put photos back on (instead of using adb) and I got stuck in a boot loop, I thought I was done for. Just rebooted it a few times and it was back up and running. Good tips =D
what do you mean by "new buttons"?
A quick question that ill ask here as to not clutter up JADs thread any more than it alreadsy is.
I have put on 3 of his roms in the last few days and where as they are stable they are dead slow at times for me. I am using a 2g class 2 sd card with an ext3 partition. How much more would a class 6 card speed swapper up? Is one worth getting?
Sorry to post up in this thread again, but I just wanted to provide some more of my experiences here.
I'd picked up Paragon Partition Manager and used that to format my SD card and create the ext3 partition on it as well. It seems something is wonky with how it created it, as every time I've created the partition, even with different sizes, I always get stuck in a boot loop when trying to install JACHero even though any other ROMs will install just fine.
I've put the update.zip onto my older 1gb card that came with my phone just to see if it would install, and though it took a while, it installed without any issues.
After going through the setup process, I attempted to put in my 4gb card with ext3 on it. Lo and behold, boot loop.
Seems something is funky with the way that Paragon Partition Manager creates an ext3 partition.
I'm now going to install an older ROM and go through the "creating an ext2 partition through the G1" method and then attempt to convert it to an ext3 through Cyan's instructions.
I'll try to keep up to date what's going on. I know this place isn't a blog, I'm just hoping someone will point out my idiocy if I'm making any huge mistakes somewhere.

/shrug. Guess I'll go back to Ramjet.

did you try going into recovery and then choosing fix file extensions... that happend to me, it might be because you have no ext 2
Hi guys, i'm in desperate need of your help. i think my precious o3d might have been screwed.
first let me tell you what i did. as you know the internal sd card of o3d is 5gb or so and it fills up very quickly. this internal sd card is mounted as /sdcard. i have a class 10 16gb micro sd card and when i insert it, its automatically mounted as /sdcard/_ExternalSD. The applications or games, especially the ones that have external data folders which are like 1gb in size insists to be installed on /sdcard. You can't move those data folders to _ExternalSD, because then the apps doesn't work.
Then i came across this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189701
As you can see that was exactly what i needed. I had CWM 5.0.2.0 installed so i downloaded the first .zip then copied all of the files and folders excluding the _ExternalSD folder to the external sd card then rebooted into recovery. From there i flashed the zip and rebooted again. phone booted up and all was ok and it worked. now the phone sees the external sd card as the internal one and the internal sd card was mounted as /sdcard/_ExternalSD. I then formatted the internal sd card from the settings menu because i already copied all of the stuff there to the external card. It worked fine and the internal card is formatted. After that i decided to get a nandroid backup so i opened the rom toolbox program. From the menus i selected the backup option, gave it a name, clicked ok. the phone rebooted into cwm recovery screen but nothing happened. then i noticed something was not right because there was some error lines under the cwm menus saying "E:can't mount CACHE:recovery/command" etc. Then i selected the reboot phone option but the phone rebooted right back into the CWM recovery again!! At that point i knew that i was @#?^ed.
Anyways i researched a lot and came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156549
i did exactly what he said and it worked, i mean it flashed nicely. then i rebooted the phone but it booted into the recovery again!!! But this time the CWM recovery was gone and i believe this is the stock recovery screen. I can browse the menu of it and make selections but the phone boots into the recovery every time it reboots.
The recovery screen looks like this:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7010/6654644033_b616bc0635_z.jpg
Then i flashed the phone to the latest official firmware V21A_00, it flashed nicely but it still boots right into the recovery everytime.
Then i installed the Android SDK and tried to push the original vold.fstab file to the system using the adb command line tool but it doesn't see the phone. I think adb works only when the system boots up normally, not in the recovery mode.
I don't know if there's a way to install the CWM from the stock recovery somehow. If you know how, please tell. The CWM has more options.
I don't know what else i can do. It started to look ridiculous. If there are any experts cool enough to help please do so. I'll be waiting. Thank you...
Edit:
I also tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1244490
I starts just fine but get's stuck on the "RESET" command, after a while it gives "DOWNLOAD FAIL!" error. I think the phone is supposed to restart automatically but it doesn't. Manually resetting the phone doesn't work either.
I'm about to pull my hair out...
Edit 2:
I also posted on the official LG Mobile forum here:
http://www.lgforum.com/forum/boards...d-goes-into-recovery-mode-every-time-it-boots
Fingers crossed
Quite a post!
From all your post there is no mention that you formated and did a factory reset after 21a flash.
Can you please try that if you haven't?

thank you for the reply!
i tried all 4 wipe options on the recovery screen then rebooted. it's the same, i'm back at the good old recovery again
Did you try with the external sd card out?
This is strange, usually a kdz flash coupled with a format fixes the problem.
Some how it still can't find the internal SD card.
I don't have further recommendations. Sorry

yes i tried with the external sd card out. it didn't work..

Hopefully someone else on this forum can suggest a way for you to unbrick.
your problem is although you have reset your phone, somehow it can't find a partition to boot from.
or
somehow the KDZ flashing is not totally successful.
good luck
If only there could be a way to be able to use the adb command from the Android SDK then i might be able to restore the vold.fstab file to its original, if the problem is that at all. Maybe then it'll work. To be able to flash the CWM Recovery again somehow might be a good thing too because it has more options like flashing .zip format roms but i have no idea how. Does anyone know if the stock recovery can flash some specifically named file to the system, does it have that kind of functionality? I'm desperate, please share your thoughts.
.............anyone?
I am sorry to say that but there is no solution for this problem yet. I have done the exact thing that you do and tried every single solution with no luck. The only way is to send it to lg repair service. My solution was to replace the mainboard.
Dostum gecmis olsun malesef tek cozum yolu anakarti degistirmek. Uzaman sayilirim android konusunda bosuna ugrasmayasin diye soyluyorum. LG servisi bile anca anakarti degistirerek cozum sunabildi. Temel problem internal karti formatlamis olman. Partititon table'i bozuyor bu islem malesef ve bu yuzden hicbir yontem ise yaramiyor.
Gecmis olsun tekrar...
so you say that the main problem was to format the internal sd card? well if formatting the internal sd card bricks the phone then why the hell is there an option to format it in the settings menu?
well if you didn't apply the swap fix, it wouldn't be a problem to format. When you swap the sd cards and format, it is the problem.

so you did exactly the same thing as me right? i mean you applied the swap fix then formatted the internal sd?
replacing the motherboard to fix this seems to be a bit nonsense to me to be honest. what does the partition table have anything to do with the motherboard?
if only there would be a .kdz format custom rom which factory resets the internal sd card during the flash process and maybe fixes the bootloader somehow, that might be the solution.
yes i did the same and the only solution was to replace the motherboard. we need a sowftware that can reach to the emmc in low-level. like omap flasher. but we also need the correct drivers which doesn't exist yet.

i don't know what the emmc is, i need to do research on that. but i still think that replacing the motherboard won't solve this issue because it seems non relevant to me. i messed up with the vold.fstab file. but after that it worked fine. i mean the internal and external cards swapped just fine. only after i decided to make a nandroid backup using rom toolbox all hell broke loose. i plan to wait a couple of days before turning the phone to LG service. i believe someone will come up with an idea.
yardım etmeye çalıştığın için teşekkür ederim bu arada
Well, there´s a new recovery for the O3D, v5.0.2.7 (I got it with ROM Manager).
It fixes 2 bugs of the previous (5.0.2.0) version: now the USB mass storage option in the mounts menu works (mount external SDCARD), and we can use ADB while in recovery. That way we can fix stuff in the phone filesystem while in recovery: we can now use ADB shell, or ADB push to replace files.
The problem is that I don´t know how to flash it to the phone while in the stock recovery. If someone can guide me on creating a signed ZIP containing this new recovery, flashable in the stock recovery, I would be glad to do that and post it here. I think these phones of you guys can be fixed using this method!

Great news! But now i need to find a way to install the new CWM. Just as you said i believe what i need is to find or make a .kdz update which includes this new CWM.
What do you think?
I know this is possible, at least for the Galaxy Ace: I have a ZIP file for this device with a custom recovery image, flashable in stock recovery!
To make one for the Optimus 3D, I need to know the following:
- How can I obtain the .IMG of the new recovery? I have found some temp files in clockworkmod folder in my sdcard. The creation date of one of them matches the exact moment I upgraded my recovery, and the file size also matches a recovery image: 5.54MB. Is it the recovery image? Can I just rename it to recovery.img? How can I extract it to ensure it´s ok?
- After I get the recovery image, I can use the Galaxy Ace ZIP as the base to build the O3D zip file. Any help on what do I have to change to make it work correctly?

Edit: I'm 99% sure that this isn't a hardware related problem. And LG's software not being able to turn the phone to stock is totally [email protected]#$%!
On some "unbrick your optimus 3d" threads i came across this image:
http://attachments.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=667470&d=1311752328
i tried all methods around here but not once i came across a screen like it. weird...
well i give up guys. so much technical [email protected] going on and no one seems to understand this device enough. i'll turn it to the LG Repair Service today. Thank you everyone for your help...
