Recovery Mode without Hardware Keyboard - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

I have access to a magic but cannot flash any ROMs to it as I cannot perform the required keypresses... There after all is no hardware keyboard.
Any ideas how I can "alt + w" & "alt + s" without a hardware keyboard?

I am only left to assume that you'll have to use the adb from the android-sdk.

Without people posting *.img files containing their system dir this is not possible...
Its not possible to apply a update.zip if there is no system.img...
This will be an issue for Magic users.....

It's really not that hard.
all the ones i have (apart from two) work the following way.
1. remove the battery
2. same as on the G1, hold home and end call till you see the little triangle warning thing. This can take several seconds before this appears, so don't let go of those buttons....!
3. Let go of the buttons when the triangle warning thing appears, and then press them again. Home and End call.
4. Writing appears. Use the track ball or volume buttons to scroll to the option you want and press the trackball to select.
Voila!
However, on earlier prototypes, depending on which one you have, you may get to step 4 and find that you cannot scroll. In this case, each of the three options will have a different key combo listed next to it. These should be only using the keys available on the device, and so you should be able to press the necessary keys for what you want to do.
On one particular device that i have, it has the old bootloader, and so i cannot get past step 2. The triangle thingy appears, but nothing else works. If you're stuck with one of those early devices, then i am afraid you are S.O.L!

It's not Home + back + end call. like i wrote before, it's home + End ONLY!

Actually, and not sure it has been posted already (pretty sure it's similar on HTC Dream also)... But Powering ON with Volume down gives some results too...

I confirm that both methods (home key and volume down key) yield the expected results with the UK vodafone HTC Magic.

One of you Magic/Sapphire guys should look at this thread.

Haykuro is one of the major devs working on the G1/Dream. He want to know if this post is accurate, because if it is, he can help you with a major step in rooting your phones.

Hi everyone (sorry for my English): maybe it's something known, but when i turned on my HTC Magic holding "volume -" button, a new menu has appeared.
Code:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S.ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0004 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
Apr 9 2009, 23:20:40
HBOOT
<BACK> FastBoot Mode
(the led has a beautiful blue color...)
Sso I've tried to press some button. When I've pressed the trackball for some seconds something changed and some text appered, like loading some ".zip" files.
Pressing the <back> button (the usb cable connected to a vista pc) "FASTBOOT USB" appeared and vista asked me for the driver (Android 1.0) that I've found in the 1.5 framework directory.
Hoping those information are useful (and my English is human-readable...).
Thank you for reading ;-)

YEP it's right
Hi Guys,
i just open my HTC MAGIC while holding the volume (down) key and here is the result:

If you press <Back> button and power up the device, then you'll be presented with Fastboot menu:
<VOL_DOWN> HBoot Mode
<SEND> Reset Device
<ACTION> Restart to HBoot
<MENU> Power Down
Also, pressing trackball and power button at the same time switches on blue LED indicator (not sure if it does anything else apart from it).

Yes, you can also turn on the phone pressing "back" + "power", and phone starts with FASTBOOT menu. In this case, blue led is off. But you can press one time "vol down" button, and it gets you to HBOOT mode, and blue led appears again.

working on Tmobile my touch
I installed update deployed today and my desktop application FreshFace is unable to boot. It send my phone to hell, so a boot was in order. I just tried the Power up with Power+home key and it worked great.

major problem...

So... I've tried to update my rom and I've done it. Didn't like the ROM and tried to change it.
soooo. I messed everything up. My magic can't boot (it stalls on the boot screen showing "HTC Magic") and most important, I can't enter fastboot to restore a working ROM
Any ideas on this one before I go to HTC Support?

can you not get to the mode pressing home and power.
from there you should be able to use adb push to send new update to sd card

nope. Every key combined with the power button just boots the device and show the "htc magic" logo. nothing more.
I had the same sort of thing once. I removed the battery and before I put it back, I already pressed the home-key as well. Then it went into fastboot mode after I put it back in. With this way I could sent a new update.zip to the phone, flash it and then it was working again
Hope this helps

Well, it's not hard to send the update.zip. I can use a microSD 2 USB and copied it that way.
By the way I think it's the "return" key to enter fastboot. Not "home".
Tried the battery-removal trick. Didn't work.
Take out your battery, hold the volume down button and put the battery back in whilst you're holding the volume down. This in theory should bring you to fastboot. Just keep holding the volume down until you reach the fastboot screen. If after you put the battery in, nothing happens, keep holding the volume down and press the power button...
Should work...

One other thing to try is to hold the two left most keys on the front of the phone (these are different depending on your phone brand) whilst holding power, this will take you to a recovery screen where perhaps you can do something from there?
I'm assuming you get to see a splash screen first and then you see the HTC Magic logo...

Well, I am exlcuding the green call button and the red end button (which you use to run on your phone), but if it's freezing at the logo where it vibrates, then there is a problem.
I had a similar thing, but I was able to boot my phone into fastboot/recovery with the battery trick.
My two left buttons on my device are the home button and the menu button. Try holding this down when you put the battery back in. Unfortunately, the situation doesn't sound too hopeful.

[SOLVED] Entering bootloader not possible

ok, after following directions on how to flash back to original spl my winxp crashed-blue screen. Haven't seen that in a while and now my maple is stuck.
Even going in the bootloader won't do no more. When i hold the volume down button it's showing directly the 9% progress bar.
Did i brick it for good? Or can i still try the goldcard method?I'd have to buy the software but want to be shure that it will work.
Any advice is very welcome...

First of all: Did you remove the battery? Just remove it, wait a couple of seconds, press and hold volume down and press on/off. Release on/off and then volume key, you should be back to the start of flashing.

Thanxs, tried again and it worked. Was able to flash to the original ROM...didn't press the VOLUME-DOWN and POWER-BUTTON long enough...
i had the same problem now i'm stuck in 9% progress bar...
i really don't know what to do...i tried so many things but no good...
it would be nice if someone helped me..
Hi there,
i just tried the same:
- battery out
- battery in
- volume down
- power down
But the phone starts directly without pressing any key. Directly when i insert the battery it starts to boot.
Windows looks like working but it shows "insert SIM" and reboots. Again and again.
Reaction to the lightsensor is there- but no keys are working...
I think the windows hangs- but until i'm not able to enter the bootloader its not possible to flash the phone...
in other forums is written about press vol UP button here is written about vol DOWN button... What is the correct?

HTC Hard reset

Hi!
I have the HTC vox0101, When i start it up it shows the HTC logo and after a couple of seconds it says windows mobile.
And its stuck there.
I also try to hard reset it but when it says to press the send button i press it and it just shows the HTC logo.
How can i fix it?
How could i come to the red green blue screen where i can flash it?
That screen should be activated with the Volume down and center nav key but it doesnt work on this phone, it worked every time with other HTCs
Thanks,
Alen:cyclops:
A few things to consider:
The first boot after hard reset takes long - for some cooked ROMs even 5-10 minutes, so be patient.
Hard Reset is done at early boot by pressing + holding L+R softkey simultaneously -> white screen with query then
The "Send" key is the green one, not center d-pad
Bootloader is reached via "press and hold camera-key", then switch on -> 3 color screen. Mind that with stock bootloader you can only flash stock rom which matches the CID for the original carrier ROM

[Q] OTG-download mode in 8x

Hi.
How to put htc 8x into OTG-download mode(usb host mode) for flashing from gold card using Y-cable?

On the HTC Titan it was by pressing Vol down + Camera & Power. Should be the same since the 8x is the next main upgrade from it.
** Please let me know if it works (Y-Cable ubrand or flash)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JrCfQaUAqU
Either way it should be some combination using the volume keys and the camera ... Good thing it there not many combinations
up + camera
down + camera
up & down +camera
up & down
I think just down sends it Zune mode which is useless unless with zune lol
No, none combinations doesn't work.
Mostly phone goes into bootloader mode with serial\usb connection, file check\search from y-cable doesn't start at all.
Seems everything is changed from older htc winphones.
Take a look at hardreset for 8x:
http://www.hard-reset.com/htc-8x-hard-reset.html
VOLUME DOWN + POWER button - brings exclamation mark on phone
VOLUME UP + POWER button - brings lightning mark on phone
In these modes sequence of buttons without any confirmation on screen leads to result(see hard reset).
I guess usb host mode can be reached through these actions.

lol those sneaky bastards who knows how many combinations are possible when you can now add multiple same button sequences... While having the y-cable plugged in with a proper goldcard then usb-host would be the only mode the usb gets accessed (blinking light etc).
Unless the icon is just a cover for an underlying menu. Volume Up activates the menu, Volume Down Picks Factory Reset, Power accepts it, Volume down is the reboot acceptance. (" Reset complete, press volume down to reboot" etc)
Probably, security in 8x\8s has mooved to htc javacard and without it in y-cable proccess even doesn't start.

Shortcut keys combos to boot into recovery, broader etc.

Sorry if I am duplicating but couldn't find it anywhere.
Sent from my HTC One XL Sense 5 Magio ROM
Bootloader = power + volume down.
Select recovery from bootloader.
Sent from my Evita
Or if it's off, just press power and release and right away press and hold volume down until it boots into bootloader.

The bootloader button combo, while technically correct, is a bit incomplete, and in my opinion one of the primary reasons folks have trouble getting into bootloader (as it gets described this way quite often). It leads some people into believing you are supposed to press both simultaneously, and release them, which will absolutely not get you into bootloader.
What exactly works and doesn't work varies a bit by the condition: phone is fully booted, stuck on boot screen, off, "Fast boot" is selected in Settings>Power on Sense ROMs (the deep sleep power function, not the adb/fastboot function). But the following always works, AFAIK:
Hold down the power button until the capacitive buttons flash several times and the phone powers off. While the screen is off, press and hold the vol down button. DO NOT let go of vol down until the white bootloader screen comes up. If the phone boots normally, or boots into SAFE MODE (looks like normal boot, but SAFE MODE in all 4 corners of the screen, and no 3rd party apps) then you pressed the vol down button too late. You can actually press vol down during, or even before pressing the power button. But the important thing, is NOT to let go of vol down until you get into bootloader.
For recovery, there is no button combo that boots the phone directly into recovery. You must select it from bootloader, or an alternate means (such as fastboot command). But there is not button combo for recovery as there is on some other phones.
Vol UP and power puts the phone in Qualcomm download mode, which I do not believe has any useful application for us users. So I would advise staying away from it.
