Interesting New UI - Nexus - General Topics

looks like its on the omnia..

Very fast and smooth!
When we will see something like that on WM??

It looks like they are maybe selling the tools to be able to create things like that.

Hope you´re right!
I have my doubts about it...

Theres a whole slew of videos by TaT on there (youtube) some of them are pretty cool, they should release some software rather than making these concept videos. Either that or maybe they are just trying to get MS attention

Its on a Samsung (meaning most likely a WM phone)... and in the youtube comments, the uploader said that it is for WM, Android, and S60... MS just needs to adopt that UI completely... and put pressure on phone companies to make CAPACITIVE touch phones... Resistive ones will NEVER be as smooth... Or maybe they should just invest in "nano" IR technology for touch screens so its truly multitouch...
I understand these are concept videos... so does that mean they are not functional as of now?... I would try to imitate a UI like that except I only know .NET and not OpenGL ES... and I dont trust .NET with speed or stability... :-/...
Edit:
More videos at
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAstonishingTribe
Seems like this company just creates UI concepts which never release. Hmmm... Maybe they just like people drooling on their keyboard, but never being satisfied :-?...
Edit2:
I like this one too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIkQguTRWgM&feature=related

really like this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SImOIMcMlk&feature=related
Hope they actually release those UI rather than the concept.

I feel like the Nexus UI is actually under development because the person is showing it on actual hardware... The other videos were just software movies (no hardware around them)... However, I feel like this UI will only support TI processors such as the one on Omnia and not the Qualcomms which is mainly what HTC uses... Because according to one of their documentation, their concepts and actual library have been running on TI processors...

Wrong. Take a look at this for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv3X5y-ajtc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsfxdxmAUoo
these are resistive touch panels , so they have all advantages of this type: durability, accuracy (if extra accuracy is needed, you can use a stylus), plus they have advantages of capacitive panels: responsiveness and sensitivity (in the video you can see the touchscreen operated by a brush and a piece of paper) and of course multitouch.
Let's just hope we see touchscreens like that in our pda's soon.

Oh nice didnt know about that... the second video u linked to, the "How It Works" part, is it showing 4 filaments of different widths? Because otherwise, I cannot see how a single resistive filament can provide multiple touches... I doubt that kind of responsiveness wud be possible on the Kaiser, touching the filament, bends it all the way... I still dont get how that works... I guess we'll find out soon... If you have any further information on that tech, please let me know... Thanks

Hmm.. heres how it works:

Wouldnt the touchscreen feel bumpy due to the matrix? Hmm supposedly coming out Q4 2009... I doubt any current phones have that technology...

This just shows how advanced HTC is compared to the rest of the crowd.
I think that the HTC Universal was a much better offering and imagine it is already over 2 years old. Don't see this Toshiba giving anything more than what the universal did except for a GPS.
The small LCD on the outside cover is good as you many not be needing to open the flip to see the caller ID, something we missed on the universal. However I do not see any call accept / reject buttons on the outside. Would this mean that one will have to open the lid to accept or reject a call. If this is so then this would be a great usability issue.

Yes, Universal was great - and still is. There isn't anything real from HTC that would be significantly better than the Universal. (The x7500 is a brick and uses outdated technology - PXA-270...; the Kaiser isn't even VGA and is pretty heavy)
All in all, I REALLY hope the new Toshi models will be SIGNIFICANTLY better than the G900.
Looks like it doesnt have a "flip & twist" option! So has to be used always in clamshell mode? Not too bad because i hardly switch my uni to portrait mode...but it sure is nice to have....
:-/
Argh, looks like the universal is sooo perfect, its hard to find another device like this until HTC decide to make a successor for it

Exactly my sentinents. HTC seems to slow down with innovation. No matter - I'll play with my Nokia N95 - it's way better than any WinMo device out there, multimedia & gaming-wise. (Not taking the Dell Axim x51v into account, as far as gaming and 3D is concerned.)

lol well there are plenty of "bits" of devices that would make up a nice successor. i would rather focus on devices that are ACTUALLY going to be released.]that's why the Toshiba, and Qualcomm's "snapdragon" platforms interest me.
it seams the "OMNI" is vapourware and we'd be waiting years for it to be real, although i invite HTC to suprise us all with a suprise release of the fabled device.
i want:
1)a large screen ,preferably make whole front the screen like iphone and "snapdragon prototype", minimum 3.5" size
2)with MINIMUM VGA res
3)full keyboard, that means WITH numbers, what's this no numbers bull****?
oh, and stop with useless key shortcuts like "OK"-"windows key"-"video call"-"I.E."...etc. they are a waste of keyboard space for apps hat can have ON SCREEN SHORTCUTS! no need for hardware buttons.
since when are these apps more important than numbers?
(can you imagine if your desktop PC keyboard had precious little space on the keyboard and the maker decided to omit numbers and make shortcut keys for these kind of apps instead?)
4)GPS
5) 128megs ram, minimum.
6)between 3 and 5 megapixel camera:
(anything else is wasted and doesn't get better picture quality unless the optics are equally good.so make it 3-5 MP and then invest the rest into the optics and CMOS sensor quality)
7)a decent chip/chipset driving the device.
so that it is responsive in desktop apps like today screen, tom tom, web browsing, also acceleration for java, jpeg, camera, etc...all the things HTC promised with Qualcomm msm7X00 chipset.
the O2 XDA Flame has Nvidia GoForce5500 chip and doesn't use it either except for camera stills, not even the video recording/playing uses it let alone accelerating the rest of the device in any way.
my friend has the Flame and my Uni records/plays better movies!
that's it because

Anything Comparable to the iPhone Coming Out On the WM Side?

I am looking to replace my Trinity and right now the iPhone is the top contender (I am with AT&T anyway.)
But I'd love to keep the flexibility I get from WM, and have finally made my Trinity rock solid (it hasn't crashed in weeks
The big thing for me is the screen, I like 3.5 and I like the resolution - the Omnia just doesn't look as good to me, plus its screen is smaller.
Is HTC, or someone else, coming out with something new, soon, which will have the screen, the memory (16gb is good) and is also a decent looking phone?
Anyone know?

Uh wtf?
Anyways. Back on topic. WAIT FOR THE AT&T TOUCH PRO. Nuff said.
Silly wabbit! iPhones are for kids.... Any anyone else without enough brain matter to operate a WM device.
If there is too much time on your contract to bail, I'd say wait for the Touch!
Unfortunately, the Touch Pro only has a 2.8" screen, which is a big disadvantage, compared to the 3.5" screen on the iPhone.
I am looking for at least 3.5".
(and since I had my Wizard, I've decided that slider keyboards are useless to me.)
For a screen that size you will need something like a Sedna.
I personally just got the I900. I had an IPhone for a month and I definitely prefer the Omnia I900. However it only has a 3.2" screen and you want 3.5".
I would have gotten a Sedna as I wanted a bigger screen, but at the last minute I got an Omnia and I am really happy with it.
The Touch Pro looks nice, that would probably be my second choice. The omnia has the best on screen keyboard I have seen so far. It not particularly special in any way other than the fact that it works well in Portrait and in landscape with the autmatic rotate function I can rapidly get precise, fast two thumb typing going by just rotating the phone (assuming I have two hands free.)
I have iTouch and have to say that I love it`s touch-screen accuracy, much better than in wm-phones with 2.8" screen, it is just so tiny compared to 3.5" screen.. I usualy do wlan with wmwifirouter and browse net using iTouch since it has bigger resolution and 3.5" screen which doesn`t need stylus + Safari is fast !
One thing what I don`t understand is this 2.8" Wmphonemania, why are they not making 3.5" screens on them ? And 3.2mp cameras are oldish, I love N95 5mp camera, it just takes so good shots, I am jealous :>
But either Symbian or iPhone`s OS, cannot beat WinMo as an operating system :X

Just surf this forum and you will find a lot of nice options:
HTC G1
HTC HD
etc...
This was exactly the question I was working on for a number of months. Although I also added in, "And won't cost me an arm and a leg".
It finally came down to the Daxian T32/x999+ (Chinese iPhone-ish clone) and the HTC Blue Angel. If the T32 had some buttons that could be used in gaming like the HTC I would've gone with that I think, but I got the HTC Blue Angel instead and it's great.
Of course this is my first PDA, so maybe I'm easily impressed.
Anything else out there either costs WAY too much or has a much smaller screen, or even both. It's too bad nobody is taking the Blue Angel and reworking it with today's technology to make it sleeker and better. Great little machine so far!
http://gizmodo.com/5047830/htc-touch-hd-looks-big-and-beautiful
How about this?
I think it's called HTC Touch HD. Don't know if HD stands for High Definition.
Anyway, this phone for sure has your requirement of 3.5 screen.

Multitouch on Windows Mobile without touching the Screen !!!!

Microsoft has a new technology to show around its called SideSigh. According to them SideSight removes “touch” from the device and makes it a function of the paper, tabletop, or even the air that’s next to the device. What does this mean? According to Microsoft, it opens up the possibility for “touch” functions to be built into tiny devices that don’t actually need a touchscreen.
Source : News Link
im not sure that I can see this as replacing touch screens, but I do however see this being used as a new form of "buttonless" design. On screen markers that shows what part of the phone to "touch" for the button... Though I would think it would be highly inaccurate and buggy.

as is all emerging tech. One day it might mature into something very usefull though
Ive seen this on the HP Touchsmart PCs. The IR panel is a bit thick (2-3mm) but i could see this technology easily making it to smaller applications. I wonder how much battery a system like that would use.
seems like a tech bound to result in the process of putting ones phone into
ones pocket ending up with some sort of nasty zoom of hasselhoff's crouch :S

ASUS P565 - 800Mhz, 640x480 VGA, The most powerful smartphone ever!

Hello Everyone, (sorry about the 640x480, it is 480x640)

Important to note this is in fact a high resolution screen true VGA 480x640

** EDIT **
Forget the Glaxy7, and the Zest, here is the best, the new, improved, ultra-fast, ultra-amazing... DAADADADAAaaaaa-------
Asus P565 - 800Mhz of raw, powerthirst quenching speed http://www.picnicface.com/videos.php?videoID=12. A VGA 480x640 screen for people who prefer not to go blind, and a headphone jack for eternal happiness.
This is it, at long last, this is what I have been looking for, I am so going to order this baby. It even has a leather wrapped battery lid, it's leather, you know what that is.. class, baby, class. Also, money, probably lots of it too eheheheh.
Ok, check out all of the specs here, http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=2634&l1=11&l2=55&l3=526&l4=0, now one thing that is interesting is that it has a true VGA screen, so this makes it not only the fastest XDA ever, it makes it also have the most clearest and beautifulest (not sure if that is a word.. but just go with it.. let it gooo... ) phone ever. The kicker out of all of this is that ... are ya ready... it has.... a capacitive touch screen with the Asus Glide interface, experience glide here http://event.asus.com/mobile/glide/.
On a serious note though, Asus builds it stuff absolutely rock solid, not like HTC in which all of my HTC devices have failed after a year of intensive use (replace the keyboard, replace the screen, the piece of crap litmus paper said it has water damage so they would not fix it under warranty, garbage company, will never buy another HTC device, almost bought the Diamond though, until I read the reviews).
This is it people, this is what has been missing from my life, I have been waiting for a phone from Asus that would kick ass for years, this is it, I am going to buy this, this is my powerthirst quencher http://www.picnicface.com/videos.php?videoID=37, with this phone I will win at everything forever! Now, to find where to buy it?
-Kilihari.
** These are now all the known photos of this device available ... I think **
You know, really, I'd be more interested if you sounded less fanboi-ish. I'm on my second HTC handset without issues on either, so really I just wonder what abuse you do to them - but hey, if that's your style then go nuts for Asus, I personally won't pay the premium though.
But I do wonder what that Glide UI provides that Touchflo (of either flavour) doesn't?
So far I'm seeing "Multiple time-zone clocks" and that's about it. And it's uglier (which is a matter of personal opinion of course)
Edit: Went looking a bit further and, while I've only found one "review" that's not just a spec sheet, Glide on the 552w got panned as "not as slick asTouchflo".
no GPS
only 65000-color ( no VGA ) ???? no GPS ? no keyboard as well ( got used to the wizard and kaiser ) ??? only 128MB RAM ???? ( touchpro has 288 RAM ) ...
***** EDIT ****
the link before said it doesnt has GPS, but now i can see it has .
the only thing that back me up is , only 128 MB RAM
3 IMPORTANT things:
-Size screen
-Phisical keyboard
-Support form this fantastic site!
Just my opinion
P.d. Great processor
Cheers,
I'd rather have the Glaxy7 with 3.5 inch screen and WVGA GPS etc.
But as someone else pointed out, the thing that would hold me back is that it would not be supported by this fantastic site...
Without it, I would have to work on the basis that I will probably not have an upgrade route to future releases windows mobile.
Offtopic & Probably covered a hundred times before, but why is it just HTC focused, thather that more WinMob focused ?
Zuber
GPS and Fanboy
So I like Asus products.
Anyways, there are about 1000 posts on xda-developers pertaining to the quality of HTC devices. Now, please I think you got my wrong my friend, I absolutely love HTC, I think they have some pretty cool ****, but when I buy a HTC device, I know exactly what I am getting. I am getting something that will not last 6 hours a day of intensive use for two years. I am beyond a abusive/extreme user, I absolutely beat my devices into the ground, I push hard on the keys and I drop my devices on the concrete about once every six months, and I live in Japan, the most humid place on Earth(feels like it anyways). I demand allot from these things and HTC can not deliver under those conditions. I do know the quality of Asus, they do deliver, the paint is melted directly into their plastic so you never see paint chipping off, the warranty is second to none and I have returned devices successfully even when the litmus paper had turned blue and after the warranty expires, their customer support is in my opinion, some of the best in the business. Asus in terms of robust build is absolutely second to none, I should know I was an Asus reseller, I built computers for people and sold all manner of Asus products. The only time I had serious recalls is when I deviated to other products from different motherboard suppliers and computer parts. Asus has rigorous product testing and each one of their motherboards is tested before it leaves the factory. I like Asus and Windows. So shoot me
Beyond that, the new lineup of devices from HTC have problems with the paint flaking off after a few weeks, TouchFLO is beautiful but laggy, and the GPS is laggy something like 20 meters or something (whoops missed a turn) hehehe. The only thing that turns me on to the Touch Diamond and its family of products is the beautiful WVGA screen but the new Asus has an actual VGA screen so, I will wait, and as far as the GPS goes, I got my Garmin Mobile 10 with Bluetooth GPS adapter, so it doesn't mean anything to me.
Fanboy? ME... of course I am, just like you are and the rest of the people here... I try to make my posts amusing so people laugh while reading them, that's all, sorry to have offended you.

Please read at the very top of the screen, it is right there, it is VGA screen, in fact, this is a true VGA device here. Yes, 65000 color is VGA (I am pretty sure, cuz, damnitt that's what it says in the review, so man, don't be a hater I am just typing what I read in the review! and if i am wrong... well.. don't kill me ehhehee)
Also, the keyboard thing doesn't bother me in the least, having the same capacitive touch screen that the iPhone does, typing on the face should hopefully be a happy experience.
AFAIK Windows Mobile can only use resistive touch screens?
Its real good but the problem is will you be able to get a good support forum for ASUS like xda-developers and that too in English ? I think xda has taken the winmo and specifically the HTC phones to a new height. If you know of a forum then please let us know.

No, Windows Mobile can support a capacitive touch screen, it is just the fact that many windows programs make use of on screen hand recognition software which kinda do not work so well with a capacitive touch screen http://discuss.pocketnow.com/showthread.php?threadid=23389. However, this has all changed now with the invention of the Pogo stylus for capacitive touch screens!
This phone should be the ****, checking out further references I don't know where I got the capacitive touch screen from, no where on Asus's site does it say that, I think I must have read it on some website somewhere, I will try to find it again.

Well you know... ASUS does make those quality products and sometimes the quality is so good that you get random features that pop out of nowhere LOL Just hope it doesn't disappear as fast as it appeared LOL

Kilihari I simply love your posts, you provided the greatest laugh for me today. You bash HTC then say you love it then compare its faults to ASUS than come back and say you like HTC again and back and forth and back and forth... I think you need a device made by ASUS and HTC... they can call it ASUHTCS (pronounced A-Sucks) LOL Just my .02 that someone got a little too happy about a device that many know little about which basically means it is set up to fail.

No no, they could call it "Hot Tech & Asus" HTC could design it, and Asus could build it after they corrected the flaws from the ****ty design team at HTC. It could be perfect!!!! Why Hot? Think about it HT&A, Hot Ti.... ahh.. never mind.. but it would be perfect wouldn't it?

Doooooood, it's soo too good to be true that it will in fact be true. I am actually going to buy this device, unless the Glaxy7 comes out tomorrow and is better for some reason, but I like this device better I think, it is faster, more future proof and .. and .. 800Mhz.. ohhhh... I can finally listen to Slayer A2BT with my cool bluetooth headphones! http://www.motorola.com/consumers/v...nnel=b49932a609e89110VgnVCM1000008406b00aRCRD. Ohh I am gonna be cooler than I used to be, and damnitt that was pretty cool .

If you think you are gonna be cooler just because you have this phone you probably think you will get supermodels by drinking Bud Lite. Power to ya

I hope it came with GPS. I'll buy this one instead of HTC HD. Smaller screen but faster CPU. Less RAM & no extra internal memory . Support from xda-developers.com is a bonus.

What... you crazy man... you don't get supermodels by drinking Bud Lite... you get super models by drinking regular Budweiser, the Lite is for little girliemen. No man... if ya haven't realized, most of what I post is a little ... how to say... expressive and... mostly hyperactively insane... ehhehehe... goes beyond the normal posts... please read my second post to understand further. Yeah, but Budweiser is way more manlier and chicks totally dig that... here in Japan. Dood, do you realize how many chicks I would get if I owned this phone, I would be a hot-Asian-chick magnet... in Japan.

Why wont u b getting the Touch Pro II

Why wont u b getting the Touch Pro 2?
I put this in the general category because I wanted to here from all the non owners, users who are going to skip the TP2 as well as the owners who want to complain about the TP2.
I was excited about this phone but I hate to go with a device that does not have a navigation pad. I have issues daily where I tap the screen or drag the screen on my Fuze and do not get the desired result so then I make use of the dpad to do what I need to do with no further problem.
Is there a reason you are going to skip the TP2? Whats it missing for you or what have you chosen over the TP2?
the processor ! or lack of driver support there of.
Because i wanted to have a (relativley) decent camera. So I got the Acer M900 instead of which, i'm VERY happy with it.
(Oh in my experience, HTC's build quality is sh*t)
Acer does have a better camera and probably better drivers too. But when it comes o build quality I dis-agree with your fact. Acer phones usually have cheap plastic finish but HTC makes good casing almost in every phone model of theirs.. They're good at design or hire good designers IMHO.
You cannot disagree with my opinion or indeed my personal experience. You may indeed have a diferent opinion and experience but that does not mean that either of us are right or wrong.
An opinion is just that, a personal opinion.
An experience is fact but that does not mean you will suffer the same.
But, I do very much agree with your OPINION on the design, they are usualy well designed however, in my EXPERIENCE, they are built out of crap and made very poorly.
My biggest issue with the TP2 is the relatively slower processor and lack of a headphone jack. I know it's business phone and all, but still, when other touch screen phones are one-upping you in hardware...
The TD2 has the same issues, but it's cheaper, so the qualms are a bit easier to swallow. I'm gonna have to think carefully and wait and see how much AT&T charges for each.
better processor and wm 7 ... until then htc fuze for me.
I'll quote Anand here.

The second part isn’t what Nokia should be doing on its $500+ smartphone, what is inexcusable is the fact that Nokia is not using ARM’s latest and greatest Cortex A8 on such an expensive phone. It’s the equivalent of Dell shipping a high end PC with a Core 2 Duo instead of a Core i7; after a certain price point, the i7 is just expected.

Up until this morning, I was 100% committed to getting a HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium).
This afternoon I had a play with the new Toshiba TG01.
Now I'm 50:50 on the TP2 or the TG01.
Quite a few reasons. The first is simply cost -- I don't have a cheap upgrade option currently, and it sure isn't worth the asking price without a carrier subsidy.
Lack of a 3.5mm jack is a big deal for me. While I always intend to keep a seperate PMP (I have a Zune 80 right now and might snag the HD later this year), I want my next phone to at least be a competent media player when I don't have my Zune with me. This is simply impossible without a standard headphone jack, because I won't carry an adapter with me.
The biggest reason is probably the impending release of WM7. I expect 7 to be a BIG upgrade over 6 and really a game changer for the whole WM world. I don't want to be stuck with "old" WM once 7 releases. And if 7 isn't as revolutionary as I expect/hope, I'll seriously consider jumping ship.

initialy i'd agree with you about keyboard v cpu however, you cannot compare processor Mhz across diferent manufacturers. The only test you can compare processors with (and actually indeed, entire devices) is with real world tests such as, opening a complex spreadsheet or running an emulator.
This is why all reviews run comparisons with user software running like Unreal Tournament for example or Call of Duty.
Numbers are an indicator, they are not the entire story.

Thats pretty nice that the biometric pad doubles as a navigation dpad! Does that work well?
Do you have any issues with the 128 RAM? The videos i have seen show that the screen is slow and a little less responsive. Is this your experiance? Thanks
No, quite the oposite.... its very fast and nippy device, certainly the fastest i've ever owned. Yes the memory numbers are a little low however, as long as you close any apps you dont really need open your fine. I often run Igo and either the FM player or Win Media Player and don't have any issues.
Be warned though, its not a small device. Its not Universal big but, you could easily use it to defend yourself
edit: Oh yeah, and some people have already learn't to edit the partition table which If I understand this correctly, means we will be shortly getting cooked roms that change the storage ratio - could be wrong on this though.
After looking at TPII I can't WOW. Its just another pocketpc with hardly any novelty to offer, Tilt form factor is what gives it an extra look otherwise its no better than TP IMHO
Some reports say the m900 has a 2.5mm jack and some say 3.5, can u say which is true?
So is the screen responsive? Do u have to tap something more than once and does the screen somtimes fail to recognize a gesture? Sorry to ask again but i wasnt sure to which part of my post u were responding to. Im thinking of ordering the m900 in the next few days.
I cant justify to myself paying that sort of money for something that is not all that different to previous htc keyboard offerings. I dont have a problem with the processor its just I am so very bored of wm 6.whatever. If wm7 ever arrives then it will be a different story.
In the meantime I am going to give android and the Hero a go...

It has neither. Its a mini 5 pin usb so you need an adapter (£2 from ebay). The screen can be unresponsive at times but Acer are very aware of this and are working with us on www.4winmobile.com. We already know there is a new firmware released and are expecting it to appear on Acers website in the next week or two.
Rather than derail the thread further, it might be an idea to check out 4winmobile and go to the Acer/Eten area.
Thanks Monty
