Hi
Welcome to the forums, and what a fantastic first post.
Please try reading the wiki, using the search function and maybe try browsing the forums to see if you can find the answers yourself.

Moving to Questions and Answers section.
OP: SIM Unlocking allows you to use any carriers SIM card in your phone. Security Unlocking allows ROMs not designed for your device to be flashed to it.
For example, the Diamond, Raphael, Blackstone, Xperia X1, and a few others all share the same radio hardware. So a security unlocked Raphael can flash radios designed for the X1. However, a security unlocked device also carries huge risks, because it will not stop you from flashing ROMs/radios that are not compatible with your device, and you can easily end up with a ~$500 brick.

SIM Unlock, I'm curious

Im sure there are information scattered across a gazillion topics, but I'm curious and thought it would be a good idea to gather the info in a central thread.
How are HTC phones generally locked?
Is it like a dongle or is it some obscure windows setting?
How someone can scatter some light on the subject.
Thanks.
Ps. I've ordered a HTC Touch Pro myself (locked).
Its done randomly.
Like for each IMEI each they make a random code. Its gotto be something with the programming part ie the software, since we have seen in the past people making programs that unlock these.
For the CODE part its just random , they make a lock and they have an unlock code for that IMEI.
Is there any way to tell if your Raphael is locked to a carrier except by inserting a diff sim? Everyone in my family has AT&T, so I can't do that. I'm assuming the AT&T Raphael is locked, but since it's only for testing you never know I guess.

The Fuze is locked I believe.. However, you can simply call Customer Care (611) and they will provide you with an unlock code.

[Q] SIM Unlocking [smart]phones nowadays

Hey, everyone!
I was perusing the forums for sim unlocking an HTC 7 pro. Many years have passed since I adquired my 8125, and it is still serving me faithfully. Yes, it is still working
Back then we just had to flash the roms, I think the radio part did the trick, and then phone was thus unlocked.
But the couple of hours I spent today looking for some insight only led me to 3rd party sites which charge money for sim unlocks. Those require the carrier to be mentioned in order for them to provide an unlocking code. So I can't just buy a phone off ebay and expect to get a code from those sites. US cellular, for instance, is never listed on them. Besides, $25 is not bucks where I live >.>
Is that really how SIM unlockings are handled here now, or have I just been really unlucky with my skimmings and searches?
TYVM, have a great day!
I believe there is no free option in order to get the HTC 7 Pro unlocked, unless you can get the seller to call their cell phone provider to get the code. Most, if not all, windows phones don't have a free option to unlock but I could be wrong on that. But if you already have a HTC 7 Pro I think you're gonna have to cough up some cash and use some unlocking websites...
Well, thanks for the straight answer.
Oh, no, I don't have one, yet. I was thinking of Buying one off Ebay, used and locked. It is harsh having to pay for switching carriers, but maybe that is what they had intended with their locking in the first place
Hmmm. Do you know, by chance, if this is the norm for smartphones recently, not being able to sim unlock them at home? Or is this device special for that matter? or was it not popular enough to tinker with it?
TY, again. Peace
I wouldn't say your device special in regards to that, all phones come SIM locked. Its just some android phones are easier to unlock during the process of rooting phones. I know for my old HTC touch running windows, it was easy to unlock since you basically had to move a couple files. I think windows 7 in general makes it harder in general to unlock as opposed to android.
hi, i have Huawi U8150 and it's network locked i can't run all the SIM card.. it can be unlock..?

[Completed] HTC One E8 (Sprint) Unlock Issue

I've run into a bit of a roadblock in the process of unlocking my HTC One E8 from Sprint. I called up Sprint and received an unlock code; however, upon inserting my new SIM (T-Mobile), I was not prompted to enter an unlock code. After speaking with Sprint again I was told that the actual unlock process would have to be completed on T-Mobile's end. So, I took the phone to T-Mobile and a representative attempted (not sure what he did) to unlock the phone but said he couldn't do it (I'm not entirely convinced he knew what he was doing...).
So pretty much I am sitting here with an unlock code, but no actual way (or knowledge) of how to use it to unlock the phone to work with T-Mobile. I feel like the answer is quite simple, but after looking through numerous forum posts I have not come across anyone with the same problem. I fear that my only remaining option is to root/s-off to unlock this phone. As someone who is not well versed in all things technical, I hope that there are other options for me to explore.
Any help at all is very much appreciated!

[Discussion] an alternate discussion for sim unlock - especially for asop users

this is in no way separate discussion from this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/how-to/discussion-brainstorm-sim-unlock-t3724135
it's just that I'm not in the USA so all the sprint talk doesn't apply to me and others in the same situation as I am
so let me get to it
i bought one of them cheap essential phones on eBay with a bad ESN (hoping this will be cracked one day), but primarily it's a ceramic tablet and a useful one at that, anyway I've installed the Unofficial linage build thanks to the guides in the roms folder and now i have a more functional oreo build which is much better than stock essential rom
however I've made this discovery that if a sim card apart from sprint is inserted it will ask me for the code
which i think is good news, now we won't have to wait on sprint to remote unlock it, all we need is a calculated code , but I'm in no way a coder or understand what is needed for code calculation, and of course there are concerns
will it work
will it stick
whats sprints pRD (provider ID)
who can help me with this project
lets see if we can work on this and maybe find a way around sim unlock on our essential
also any help with the PRD and possible online unlockers would help

Network/Carrier Unlocking Iphones and Androids

Hi Guys! I'm kinda new to the forum. I made an account a while ago, but I never really used it... until now.
Let me just say that you guys helped me out more than once before, but now I need to ask questions to which I haven't been able to get a direct answer to. I dabbled in phone repair (mainly just rooted a few androids). I'm still a novice, but I'd like to start getting work experience. I'd like to start my own business unlocking, repairing, and eventually, creating custom ROMS for all phone models. But I'm still not 100% clear on a few things.
Is it at all possible to unlock android phones by flashing an international ROM? For example, let's say I have an Samsung Gakaxy S7, model SM- G930V (Locked to Verizon), could I, in any way, flash a 930F ROM (oran international variant of the 930F) onto that phone to unlock it? If not, what methods are available to me? Besides the obvious "contact your carrier and have them do it". There are a few sites such as
unlockauthority
unlockradar
That claim to be able to unlock your phone, but how do they do it? Are these sites even legit? I've heard of a few programs, such as Chimera Tools, that claim to be able to do the same thing, but the questions remain the same: are they legit, and if so, how to they do it? Can I learn to do it myself? If so, how? If not, why?
The same applies to iPhones, which I hear require iCloud to unlock. If I have an iPhone X, locked to AT&T or T-Mobile, can I just log in to iCloud and unlock it from there in just a few clicks for free?
watch?v=LsEJwX7BVcc
This guy claims to be able to unlock "any" iPhone by just inputting a few codes. I question the legitimacy of this, of course, but I don't have access to a locked iPhone to verify.
Again, I'd like to start a business. Most people are looking to unlock their phones, so that would be my focus.
If anyone can help me, if even a little, I'd be very grateful.
And of course, once I learn more about mobile devices, I'll be able to help you

Generally speaking, you can't use firmware from one model on a different model, especially when it comes to any kind of Verizon device, that leads to a bricked device. There are cases where you can flash a firmware from a different model number, but those are rare cases and the devices are virtually identical hardware/software(bootloader).
If you're trying to unlock bootloader on any kind of Verizon Samsung device with 4.4 Kiit Kat or newer android, you can give up on that idea, you'll never make it happen, many, many, many people have tried, there is no way to do it. Verizon/Samsung has that locked down tight.
When it comes to unlocking phones, there is no general way of doing so. That is case by case and model number by model number. Not all phones can be unlocked and the ones that can be unlocked use different methods. You'll have to find the method for each specific model number.
We can't help in the iPhone department, this is an android development site, it doesn't deal with iPhone at all, not in any shape, form or fashion. You'll have to go somewhere else with that.

Thank you very much for your input! I'd like to keep this thread open, in case anyone else has something to share.
I really appreciate your help. From what I understand, unlocking Androids can only "safely" be done by contacting the appropriate carrier, or finding a specific method for each phone model.
