[Q] SIM Unlocking [smart]phones nowadays - General Questions and Answers

Hey, everyone!
I was perusing the forums for sim unlocking an HTC 7 pro. Many years have passed since I adquired my 8125, and it is still serving me faithfully. Yes, it is still working
Back then we just had to flash the roms, I think the radio part did the trick, and then phone was thus unlocked.
But the couple of hours I spent today looking for some insight only led me to 3rd party sites which charge money for sim unlocks. Those require the carrier to be mentioned in order for them to provide an unlocking code. So I can't just buy a phone off ebay and expect to get a code from those sites. US cellular, for instance, is never listed on them. Besides, $25 is not bucks where I live >.>
Is that really how SIM unlockings are handled here now, or have I just been really unlucky with my skimmings and searches?
TYVM, have a great day!

I believe there is no free option in order to get the HTC 7 Pro unlocked, unless you can get the seller to call their cell phone provider to get the code. Most, if not all, windows phones don't have a free option to unlock but I could be wrong on that. But if you already have a HTC 7 Pro I think you're gonna have to cough up some cash and use some unlocking websites...

Well, thanks for the straight answer.
Oh, no, I don't have one, yet. I was thinking of Buying one off Ebay, used and locked. It is harsh having to pay for switching carriers, but maybe that is what they had intended with their locking in the first place
Hmmm. Do you know, by chance, if this is the norm for smartphones recently, not being able to sim unlock them at home? Or is this device special for that matter? or was it not popular enough to tinker with it?
TY, again. Peace

I wouldn't say your device special in regards to that, all phones come SIM locked. Its just some android phones are easier to unlock during the process of rooting phones. I know for my old HTC touch running windows, it was easy to unlock since you basically had to move a couple files. I think windows 7 in general makes it harder in general to unlock as opposed to android.

hi, i have Huawi U8150 and it's network locked i can't run all the SIM card.. it can be unlock..?

[Q] windows phone 7 unlock

Is it possible to unlock these phones, does it just ask for a code or how is it done, would like to know, do any of the phones come factory unlocked.
Yes it's possible to unlock the phones.
What phone are you looking at for unlocking?

I wanna either get a htc surround or a Lg quantum. I will pick one up Monday when they come out just nor sure which one yet.
I'm not sure weather they will come unlocked but I can only speak for the UK, the HTC HD7 was locked to o2 as were other phones on respective networks (orange etc).
You CAN get unlock codes though, I managed to. You might have to wait a few days after purchase (I had to wait 5 days) as the phones are that new the IMEI numbers aren't in any databases yet. Not sure if this would apply to the US though as the phones have been around for a bit now elsewhere.
For the omnia 7, direct unlock here:

HTC surround isn't doing so well in terms of reviews and what not. I'd reconsider that.
Lg quantum
I think i will go for the lg instead as i want the full keyboard, where can i find someone to unlock these win7 phones.

First of all decide where you are buying your phones from. Some of the providers like O2 do not lock their devices.
For the other devices which come locked there are quite a lot of sites which gives you the unlock code within minutes or max 1 day.
Also you can check how much your provider is charging to unlock the device. Usually the charge between your provider and the ones outside is not that huge and if that is the case it is always better to get it unlocked from your provider.

My carrier that actually has win 7 phones wont give you an unlock code for 30 days and want 75 bucks after that, so im looking for an aftermarket company to unlock the lg quantum on bell in canada and also unlock a rogers samsung focus on rogers.
you guys
i'm concerned about this unlocking business. if an iphone comes originally unlocked there's of course 0 problem, but if the simlock gets removed using some software or code and the phone gets its software updated, the simlock comes right back. i know there weren't any wp7 updates yet, but do you think this situation also concerns wp7 devices?

u r talking about jail breaking here not sim unlocking.
Once you sim unlock your phone the only advantage is you can use the SIM of any carrier in it and no future updates would be locking it back.
The scenario you told would only come if you find a way to modify the reg settings to use the phone as a usb storage or something like that. in this case once you update ur phone with a wp 7 update ur hack would stop working till u find and tweak ur registry settings again

thanks for replying, but i actually was talking about sim unlocking. i heard that if the iphone is originally locked to some carrier e.g. at&t, the simlock gets removed using a code or software and the phone gets an update, the simlock returns. i was wondering whether this scenario concerns wp7. either way, it's always best to buy a phone that's originally sim unlocked (more expensive...)

The phones are initially prepared unlocked from the manufacturers like HTC. Carriers like orange than orders phones for them which they ask to be locked to Orange SIMS. There would be an unlock code to enable the handset to accept all the SIM's as the handset was made like that. If you contact your carrier like Orange they would in turn contact HTC and get the unlock code from them. If you contact any third party from the web they calculate this unlock code and msg or mail you (God knows how... Quite a lot of people have asked in XDA and there is no reply to this other than silence)
So if you SIM unlock your phone it is done. All your future updates for the OS would be done via zune and there is no way your handset would get locked again..
Hope everything is clear....
thank you, all is clear now
Successful unlock codes
Hi guys,
Just want to let you know that my Focus finally arrived this Monday, as soon as I got it I sent the IMEI and payed to the ebay guy nckzone, this seller is amazing, in 2 hours he sent me the unlock code to my paypal email address, the code worked just great.
The next day (Tuesday), my girlfriend's HTC Surround arrived and so I proceed to ask him if he also unlocks HTC Surround (this is because we live in Costa Rica and ICE's network is lock because of AT&T's policies), and he told me he can do those as well, so I payed and in 30 minutes he replied with the code. Great service for real...
If somebody needs to buy unlock codes for WP7, I think this guy can. The link of the auction is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Unlock-Samsung-Focus-i917-Omnia7-Galaxy-Tab-CODE-/140482107888?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b562d9f0#ht_2581wt_1139

Damn. Man! My Focus will arrive in just a few days. I had to have it shipped. I really hope his magic will work on mine as well. Although I really hate AT&T for forcing Samsung to lockdown on the unlock codes for the US-released Focus. It's not like they're the only Telecom company that matters.
Well, enough trolling. =)) Thanks for the heads up.

Droid 2 Global unlock code

I know a lot of people are talking about the turbo sim, but I am really not into the sim patch. I really like this phone, but also need it SIM unlocked.
Since I am on Page Plus, there's no way for me to get an unlock code from Verizon.
I question is, is there anyone ever unlocked Droid 2 Global by 3rd party vendor's unlock code? I was searching web and ebay, and did found some people.
Do all 3rd party vendor's unlock codes fail, or some of them work and some don't?
Please let me know your experiences. Thank you!
I actually got in touch with 2 different 3rd party code vendors and they both gave me the same 2 codes. I had also managed to get Verizon to give me the codes themselves without having the phone activated with them (it involves a little social hacking and a lot of luck). The thing is that Verizon gave me 3 unlock codes, 2 of which were the same that the vendors had given me.
Long story short, I couldn't unlock the phone even with the codes I got from Verizon (one of them was different from what the vendors had given me). I am not currently in the USA and apparently the phone needs to connect with the Verizon network to complete the unlock. I don't know if you really need to have the phone activated with Verizon at the time that you enter the unlock code or if you just need the phone to be able to reach the Verizon network.
I will be going to the USA next month and will be trying this out but it'll be around mid April before I'm able to post my results.
Yeah, im guessing the code MAY or may NOT work IF you're in the US ( as it can reach verizons network). Otherwise it just seems like theres no way it would work. Mine would come up with a "network unlock unsuccessful" as soon as i entered the code, like seriously, right away.
Also, lol @ "social hacking"
xD

When I unlock mine, I was outside US, outside of VZW network reach. But I guess mine was one of the not specially locked ones. They say the first batch wasn't tampered with (I got mine in the week of release, as soon as it was available at retail VZW stores)

I'm sorry if you get it this way. No, absolutely not, I am not teasing anyone, believe me, despite mine being unlocked already, I am still researching a solution of this problem. The turbosim idea was actually mine if you guys have been following it since the unlocking troubles started. The turbosim is the noob-style solution. I am pretty sure we can address the "locks" with some gsm shop equipment, just as for many other phones, motorola and other brands. The problem comes this is US only phone available in US only. Only if it was made available to "the old continent" for example, it would have been torn apart million times by now, every bit of it exposed, figuratively speaking.
Too bad time flies, soon D2g will be forgotten. I can tell you I am ditching mine as soon as Droid 3 with appropriate for my carrier GSM/UMTS/LTE bands is released. I can't pass by 4 inch screen and 5 row qwerty portrait slideout kb, as well as, I guess, some dual core madness with lots of ram under the hood too. Sorry I went way too off topic....

Yeah, as much as i hate Motorola's decision favouring a locked bootloader, I think im gonna go with the Droid 3 after this one. In my opinion, theres no other phone model/series that
1. Has a qwerty keyborad
2. Looks good
3. Has good build quality
4. Doesnt have a Win7phone-like price tag
Seriously, i wish the Xperia Pro looked DECENT at least.

sorry if this is a redundant question, but if VZW gives the unlock code... will it then work on AT&T?
as far as i know, it wont. It will be unlocked to use on any GSM carrier outside the US, as AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. network IDs are blocked and that block is unrelated to the SIM lock.

[Q] HTC One X Abroad

Hey everyone,
I will be traveling to Italy this summer for several weeks and am interested in using the phone for emergency calls within the country.
I understand there are prepaid sim cards sold within Italy however the phone must be unlocked in order to use another carrier's sim card.
So to sum it up, is it possible to unlock the HTC One X to be used abroad and if so, where do you guys recommend I unlock it? Is it possible to do it on your own?
This will be my first time unlocking so yes I hate myself.
On a side note I had an At&t sales associate tell me that I won't be able to unlock the HTC One X until six months upon activation and also that international sim cards won't fit into the HTC One X. I'm guessing neither of those are true but what do you think?
Can't unlock the AT&T phone yet. You'll have to borrow/rent another phone. Sorry.
Err... I was speaking about unlocking the bootloader, which isn't even relevant to your question. I'm going to sleep.
Sent from my HTC One X
There is currently no way to SIM unlock yourself (for the typical user). Many paid unlocking services are failing to unlock the AT&T ONe X so far, but apparently, the service on the following post can do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25758468&postcount=2
I have no personal knowledge of this particular service, and cannot vouch for them. Read the whole thread if you want more info.
I saw something similar on another post "htcsource. com/2012/05/how-to-sim-unlock-the-att-htc-one-x-for-free " where you can get a code generated for free through At&t but I am not sure if that will totally work out.
There are also a bunch of sites that claim to provide a code as well but they don't look too reliable and have several comments claiming the codes did not work.

AT&T will not supply SIM unlock codes for any "exclusive" phones for a period of 10 months after the phone's release, and I think that includes the One X. And the article mistakenly said "you must have an account in good standing (60 days of active service with a pre-paid account)" but it should say post paid.
I think the 10-month exclusivity period is what the sales associate was attempting to refer to.
You can try to call AT&T and ask. I'm guessing they won't give it to you, but if you call, let us know the results.
Also, according to the following webpage, any European carrier that has the iPhone will also have MicroSIMs. So they should have them in Italy, but it wouldn't hurt to do a little more research on this.

How can I sim unlock my HTC One X AT&T

Hello,
I have rooted my device and I have even unlocked the Bootloader, but I still think there is something that I should do and I was looking in this forum but I couldn't find anything.
So my questions are:
1) is there anything I can do to have my sim unlock?
2) if the answer to the first question is "no for now", then if I instal one of the custom roms in the forum, will the sim be unlocked then?
thanks

If you need to get SIM UNLOCK to use the phone with a different carrier you need to get an unlock code.
Unfortunately this isn't free. You can have this done by cellunlocker.net they require to get your IMEI to generate the unlock code for you device.
In about 2 hours from that point on you'll get an EMAIL with the unlock code. This will set you back by 7,99$ USD.
There you go you can now use your phone with any carrier afterward.
Cheers bud.
Sorry about the misplacement of the thread.
I know that I need an unlock code, it's just that I away from USA for couple months and going back so that's why I don't want to spend money on something for only couple months.
I thought that there exist some method in this forum which will allow me and others to have our devices sim unlocked.
It's a shame that I am a programmer but I can't do it myself because I don't know from where to start so I can sim unlock my own device.
If someone is willing to guide me through some hacking tutorials, I will be very happy to learn how to hack myself and I would love to share my hacking work with others but the question is from where should I start.
still looking for a potential help if possible
No problem. The likely hood that you'll find what your looking for are quite slim to none at this present time. Cheers mate.

I unlocked my ATT HTC One X through them.. They are legitimate and the code they provide works .... cost abt 11$... but definitely worth it... they sent me the carrier unlock code in abt an hour...

There is no free method at this time. Some folks are working on it, look for the thread in Development. But at this time, you will need to use a paid service if you want it SIM unlocked.
It only costs $11. What's your alternative, not use your One X for a couple months? Even if you have a backup phone that is SIM unlocked, my guess is that you will end up wishing you had spent the $11 so that you can use your awesome One X!
$7 on Ebay, i got my code in a matter of minutes.

Is this unlock code a permanent same-as-factory-unlock carrier unlock? In other words, flashing some type of radio, rom, boot loader, etc will not re-lock this phone to a carrier?
How do these services and ebay vendors get an unlock code? I'm not looking to do this myself, but I just thought that these phones have unlock codes that are controlled by htc and held in some database. So I'm not sure what these companies are doing.
unlock code bought online = unlock forever even if you factory reset or w/e you kids do with your smartphones these days.
^ What he said, permanent.
Long live the One X
Thanks to everyone.
I will just wait because I am carrying 2 devices with me all the time anyway so it does not effect me at all, I thought there is a free way, plus I am going back to the US in few weeks and I will be using AT&T again.
For me $7 is less than 2 packs of cigarettes, so to me it's like free
Long live the One X
Ya not doing it because you don't want to spend seven dollars is pretty crazy IMO
Even if it wasn't permanent, its not like the unlock code changes if you flash a radio/rom, you'd just have to re enter.
I just want to know how to do for the sake of knowing how to do it... I figure there's several services out there that do it and all the ask for is the carrier and IMEI so there must be fairly easy way to do it...
?
If I've ever had a legit need to sim unlock, such as overseas travel, I simply call my provider and they just tell me the code.

Question about using prepaid sims on my tp2...

If I unlock a verizon htc touch pro 2 (Rhodium) will I be able to use prepaid sim card based unlimited plans on it? The kind you can get from walmart and stuff? I don't want to buy a new phone because I still love my touch pro 2 but having a verizon account isn't possible anymore so I would like to get some sort of prepaid plan for it. Thanks.

Yes, if you do the SIM unlock and get a prepaid provider that uses (regular) SIM cards.
Note this is different from the hSPL process.
I already unlocked the spl a long time ago, using mighty rom on it. Would all providers work? I'm wanting to get one of those unlimited text things from like t-mobile or even verizon. Is there any free way to unlock the phone? If not do you know the best way to go about doing it?
What do you mean by "regular" sim cards? I've never used anything but Verizon cdma on someone else's actual account so I'm not sure about sim cards. I've had lots of phones but they have all been on verizon and cdma.

Not all sim cards are the same size/shape. There are some adapters out there for sale, but I don't suggest going that route. If it is a major carrier, and the sim card fits your phone, and your phone is sim unlocked it should work.

Verizon = CDMA.
You need a GSM provider that uses standard size SIM cards. Some providers use different sized cards (as noted previously), but most use standard size cards.
I know verizon is cdma but the touch pro 2 has a sim slot as well because it was sold as a "world phone". So as long as I unlock it and the sim card I get fits it should work? I've only seen one type of sim card before but from a bunch of different phones and they were all the same size as the touch pro 2 takes.
As for the second part of my question I'm still a bit confused about. Is there any free way to unlock the phone? If not do you know the best way to go about doing it? Should I take it to a provider with a local store, use a site that does it, etc?

As for the second part of my question I'm still a bit confused about. Is there any free way to unlock the phone? If not do you know the best way to go about doing it? Should I take it to a provider with a local store, use a site that does it, etc?

First question has been answered several times. Yes.
There is not a free way to unlock the phone.
However, if you had looked at the stickies... In this very section... You might've noticed this thread. I hope...
No reason to be rude man... I just didn't want to spend $20 on unlocking it then another $40 on the card just to find out it won't work. Not all of us are "well off", can't just throw away money like that... I could eat for weeks off that money lol...
Also I didn't look for anything on how to unlock it because, like I said, I wanted to know if the prepaid things would work on it in the first place. Thanks for all the answers though guys it has helped a lot. My phone was on my ex wife's mother's plan and the 2 year contract just ran out so she closed the account. I can't afford a new phone to go with a prepaid plan. Just trying to find a way to have a phone again so I can talk to my children and want to make sure I don't spend money I don't have on something that won't work.

Just take your time and read as much as you can.
Wish there was a 'free way' to unlock the phone, but Olinex is still allowed to charge for that privilege... Sorry.
Mind explaining the whole unlock thing? It seems to me there are "official" sites, random people, companies, local stores, pretty much anyone can do it... Do they have to have a license to register the code on some global database or what? I've softmodded and hardmodded just about everything I've ever owned since my sms (yea that's kinda funny talking about phones but I meant sega master system...) flashcart but I don't really get this... From what I've read you get a code from someone (which can be anyone who can do it I guess) and that unlocks your device. So does that unlock your device 100% or only on networks that person/company has license to unlock on?

I don't really understand how the SIM unlocking process works unfortunately... I know Oli's works for our devices, so if you're going to pay for one that's the one to go with.
