Multi Touch in Maps? - G1 Android Development

I saw a version of maps going around with multitouch zoom, but it is without search and directions.
Are there any other options for zooming in maps?

it was just a demo of multi touch, it wasnt the full gmaps app, google hasnt released the code for gmaps yet so no one can implement multi touch into it, however with the jf updates many devs can make there own map apps with multi touch (i believe), but so far there is no way to have the original map app and multi touch. what you saw wasnt what you are hoping for
(correct me if im wrong)

oh and no, there are currently no other methods for zooming in on the maps (yes, i know the current way sucks, im with you 100% in wanting a different way.)

Navigon Mobile Navigator on Diamond 2

I thought a new thread would be useful because the other satnav threads are interspersed with different software solutions and I know quite a few people are anxious to get a working satnav solution on their Diamond 2.
I've dumped Tomtom for various reasons that I won't go into here so now I am trying new solutions and Navigon seem to be a real contender. If you have been looking into Navigon you will no doubt have stumbled upon the Touch HD thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446487 with the 3 hacked files to make it work on the Diamond 2's wvga screen.
I am working on the premise that the hacked files do not impinge on Navigon's profits and I am happy to use them until Navigon make an official wvga version. I am using the 30 day try before you buy version and intend to buy the full version if I am happy with the software.
I downloaded the trial software from their UK site and chose the ~400MB UK only maps. The software version that I was served up was 7.3.1 build 137 and, as expected, did not work at all on my D2. I assumed that the trial download would be the latest available and another thread stated that the latest was 7.3.2 and that only one hacked file was needed. I tried that single file and the program would not start. I didn't know what version I had at that point because the app wouldn't start. Therefore, I copied the three hacked files into the relevant places in the navigon folder and, hey presto, it worked.
It didn't find the in-built gps receiver straight away and I can't remember exactly what I did but I mucked about with the gps settings and had it working in a minute or two. It obtained a satellite lock indoors within about 30 seconds. Very impressive so far!
I installed the "Navigon Fresh" software on my PC and it immediately updated itself to a more recent version. It found my Navigon installation on the D2 when I connected it in diskdrive mode via USB. I tried to search for a more uptodate software version but whatever I did Fresh stated that I had an "invalid device definition" and wouldn't do anything. So I continued with the version I had.
The settings and preferences seem a bit convoluted compared to tomtom navigator, they seem a bit spread around rather than being all in one place. I guess you can soon get used to that. gps updates are quick, I would say at least two screen updates per second and navigation is easy to follow when in the car. I can't find a zoom function in 3D mode and I find the default a bit too zoomed-out i.e. it shows your route for about a mile in front of you - I'd prefer just a few hundred yards.
The screen is a bit stretched but not sop much that it is noticeable, the speed signs are oval rather than round but the whole of the screen is used up and it is all quite readable. The road names are a bit too small to read when driving but the directions and speed readout etc are all just fine. The voice navigation is excellent! The directions are very clear and precise for instance the lady says something like "in three hundred metres take the second exit on the roundabout onto Manchester Road." She sounds really quite human and not robot-like at all. One thing I don't like though is that it sometimes tells you turn left for a right turn off a roundabout.
I don't know about the full version but the trial version MUST have a working internet connection to start up so that it can check its validity. Therefore, no network connection = no navigation. This could be a real problem. All in all, so far, I am quite impressed with it.
Sorry for the rambling post but I hope this will be useful for someone who is looking for a D2 satnav solution.

The full version doesn't need an internet connection to navigate, once it is activated.
I've been using Navigon for a week. Good alternative to TomTom. The only thing I don't like is that perspective on 3D view is too low (no point in having the car icon in the middle of the screen, instead of having it at the bottom)

It's normal, right after installation, the GPS is not found but your offered the choice of configuring it manually or use the GPS Assistant. Just start the assistant, click no, no and okay and the GPS is there ...

Can't help you on this one, sorry.
But I'm amazed by everyone getting Navigon to run. Would you mind explaining step by step how you did and also what verison you're running? I tried 7.3.1 and I see the splash screen and then the program shuts down. Feel free to PM me if that's easier.
Can someone explain how to install igo to work on TD2? I have ver. 8, which is a year old, and it doesn't work.

how do u rotate? using Reg edits? try changescreen to rotate, MN7 will work fine in Landscape mode.
or if u dont want to use any additional programs to rotate, try launching MN7 from FileExplorer, not from startmenu..

Its much more easier to use g-Config than to add those pesky registry settings.
However. Navigon rotates now on my device but it does not rescale correct....
so it does rotate the screen but then its just a 480 * 800 rotates so i see only 480 * 480....
This is not really what i want i want it to be like TomTom. TomTom flawlessly rotates the screen for me....
( but tt has a sound and a gps lag problem !!!! )
Hello,
for well0549 :

Ok for the sound problem but its not a lag problem for tt7 on diamond 2 its the screen refresh because the screen its 3.2 vga so may be the driver is not supported in this rom.?

I've found only the Try & Buy Europe but I'm shure, others will follow ...
Downloadlink from Mobile2Day
Have also just downloaded and installed the try & buy version of Navigon 7. Only problem is that I can't see the maps on the screen. All installed to SD card. Downloaded the maps to go with it (Q2_2009 Europe) and placed them in the "Maps" folder in Navigon.
When I start the prog, get all the guff about it being a trial version and having 30 days to try it. It picks up 7 to 9 sat signals in no time at all and tells me exactly where I am. But the screen is totally white where a map should be.
Any idea where I am going wrong? This looks like being a great software packet and if I can get it going I will more than happily buy it.

I think this can happen in case of missing MapDrawer.nfs file (or improper version). This file should be in the \map subdirectory.
OK..... don't seem to have that file. Without the map files themselves, that directory is empty.
Thanks nunein

Beside of these files (and the map files) there should be 6 other files (*.nfs and *.psf) and the "Landmarks" directory incl. the file "Landmarks_EU.nfs".
So I guess something went wrong with the sw installation.
Once again, nunein, thanks very much for your help. Added the MapDrawer.nfs to the "Maps" directory and suddenly I can see the map. Used it this morning to get to work (I know the way really!!), and it was brilliant. Think I will have to splash out the 99€ for the activation.
Vielen vielen dank

No problem at all, I'm happy that my hints were helpful in that case.
Hi i have managed to rotate my screen using reg edits and g-confic but i cant get proper landscape it only shows half the screen in landscape and half in portrait i am using the latest (i think ) 7 7.3.4 (build 494)

Test N1's multitouch support with these 2 apps Hopefully supports more than 2 points!

If somebody can test Nexus One's multi touch capability it would be great. Hopefully it supports more than 2 points!
I think these apps could be used: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-electricsheep-mtp-pipD.aspx

Only two points with either of those applications. Also the two points seems to interfere with each other.
This isn't "multitouch" when you're seeing the 2 points interfere with each other. It's the exact same thing the Dream had in it's rom.
I think this is at an os / rom level.. (although the Dolphin browser is very smooth!) Dolphin may be using this hacky 'multitouch' though.
I'll eat my hat when I see multitouch on Android that clearly supports more than 2 fingers...! I just don't think it's in the hardware.
Prove me wrong devs! I'm only a cartoonist.
Ooh! I take it back. "Toon Warz" from polarbit games is full multitouch!
PolarBit makes some gorgeous games.. holy god!
It's definitely not the hardware.

As of Android 2.x, multi-touch is available at the software level and might I say executed very well in apps like Dolphin. It's available in the new 2.1 SDK (I've played with it) and should work no differently than it does on the iPhone, possibly better given the better hardware. I haven't tried these two apps but it will be nice when developers start developing MT apps.
MT is turned off by default for built-in apps like Browser and Gallery and Google apps like Gmail, Maps, etc. MT is supported out of the box outside the U.S. As soon as the source code for 2.1 is released, developers creating custom ROMs can simply switch on MT and it will be in the built-in browser and the Gallery.
People have to stop saying Android doesn't support MT because that is no longer the case. Google simply refuses to give a concrete reason it was turned off in U.S. model devices.
Aren't the google apps protected in some way from redistribution? Wouldn't it stand to reason then, that we won't see their multitouch editions? Do they even release the source for those apps?

No, Google does not release the source code for their proprietary apps and no they cannot be redistributed (remember when Cyanogen released the 1.6 Market before Google?). Unless they are illegally distributed it is unlikely that we will see them (but I have no way to know that for certain). Besides, I personally find MT to not be of much use in the majority of apps since I use my phone with one hand and the N1 is especially too big to pinch with one hand. I'd rather double click. I can see how it could be vital to games. For example, it is currently not possible to play a NES emulator on a myTouch. There is no onscreen support and even if there was, you could not move the directional pad and click the buttons as the same time.

New, BING with navigation

Just saw this on another site. Microsoft has released a new version of Bing that includes real time navigation, with voice directions, along with the other Bing search stuff.
Works great on the HD2 here in US.
Download latest at Microsoft Bing site
or here for CAB.
PocketNow has a video showing BingNav in action on HD2.
Pros:
Voice Prompts with street names
Walking and Driving Navigation
Full screen graphic of next turn
Voice control for search
Cons:
No pinch-to-zoom (zoom buttons work well)
Data plan required (bad for some)
US only (Possibly) [CONFIRMED - NAV in US only]
Maps are slow to load without 3G.
Note: Yes, just like Google Nav for Android, it uses data plan for getting maps or for search features. I dont think it can pre-load maps off wifi before trip.
Note2: This wont affect US HD2 users, but looks like Microsoft disabled Nav features on Verizon network so as to not kill off Verizon Nav App sales.
Cheers Pingu!
Works a treat here in Limeyland also.
Shabba!
it requires data plan for navigation to work.
Navigation doesnt work in Germany
Good stuff - it looks MUCH better than the ****ty Google-apps if you ask me.
works great but there is no pinch to zoom on the map
Looks good, navigation is only for the US though ... really hope it comes to the UK, it cant be hard, it knows where the roads are and can give directions.
wooooooooot
I don't expect it too soon here in Europe - our BING-websearch is still marked 'beta' here in Germany - it's kinda ridiculous.
This is much better than Google Map, I'm glad to see Microsoft catching up so seriously.
Honestly I don't see standalone navigation device garmin
lasting too much longer, if you have a company like microsoft or google offering free voice guided maps for free, and no matter how you slice it the majority of cellular/mobile devices have a data plan or way to access data almost anytime. I mean if 2 of your friends don't have data they probably have a wifi enabled phone and with android, winmo, and hate to say apple being a wifi router we all have connection. I think this is going to help the providers push the tier internet usage system. (sorry for long post was itching to post on this)
Thanks for posting the cab.
Navigation unfortunately doesn't work in the UK (says "all or part of your route is not in the United States. We are sorry, but navigation is not available outside the United States").
I find the voice recognition in the latest google maps better than 'Tell me' in bing - for the UK anyway. And google maps has pinch to zoom, and latitude which I think is good for keeping a beady eye on your gf
Eek. Not a fan. I think Microsoft can do better.
Thanks for the cab! I read about this earlier and it said to go to m.bing.com/download on my phone but when I did that, site said my phone (TMOUS HTC HD2) is not supported. However, I still downloaded a cab which did not do anything. So really thanks for this! I just tried it and it works! I love awesome free apps!
Works great!
Trick/tip: be sure you are using Internet Explorer to browse to m.bing.com/download. The site does not recognize Opera and it thinks you have an unsupported device. Using IE, it recognizes the device and offers the correct version of the bing cab.
I was using the wrong version of Bing for a while and getting frustrated that I wasn't seeing the latest features etc, until I figured this simple thing out.

If people try to download from Marketplace, it says that version was released on 4/27/10 and the voice directions don't seem to work for some Verizon phones. Download from m.bing.com and the voice directions work properly on stock Verizon ROMs.
how does it compared with Google Navigate... does this got audio control?
Is anyone using this on the AT&T Tilt2 (Touch Pro 2, Rhodium)? The last version of Bing that would locate me is V4.6.6. Every update since then has failed to both get a GPS lock and locate with cell towers. I've checked all the GPS com ports and everything looks as if it's fine, but it just won't lock on. Every other app that uses tower location and/or GPS works just fine.
I set up my Tilt2 as a dual boot; I actually have Android running on it now. Guess what? Google Navigation works just fine on it yet Android isn't even the native OS!
Why can't Microsoft get anything right??? Why does a Microsoft app not work on a (stock non-cooked) Microsoft ROM???
Anyone have any ideas on why the latest versions of Bing won't work on my device?

Can it preload full maps for the route over WiFi?

Navigation apps without ability to select from contacts

I'm curious...does anyone have any insight into why the feature that allows the user to select from his/her contacts from within the various navigation apps seems to come and go? I have noticed that Google Maps 4.1 no longer has this feature (I know 3.3 had it, but can't speak for others in between), and I know that Bing has also had it disappear (although it seems to be back in latest version). I've never seen it as an option in Sprint Navigation, although I only first used Sprint Navigation when I got my TP2 back in Nov 2009. To me, this is a very useful feature that it seems they would really like to keep, and I never noticed it being buggy in either GMaps or Bing.
Just curious if anyone is aware of some technical issue or other logical reason that this feature would be pulled from an app.

Windows Store needs work

I hope MS is going to implement automatic updating of apps from the windows store like Android does. What a pain to have to update apps manually - Every time I go to the store I have 3-4 apps that need updating.
I think the Windows Store needs alot of work - Its not easy to find stuff (Searches are not very effective), and the layout is horrible.
Just saying . . . .
Agreed! then only thing I hate about t Microsoft's new OS is the constant scrolling to the right.... it's painful to mind and body.

iOS doesn't have automatic updates either, android is the only one really ahead of its time with this feature, hopefully microsoft implement it, maybe along side windows updates.
I don't really find the layout that horrible though, I find the layout is very consistent with the rest of the os which is just fine.
I don't see the issue with searches either, I search, it works as expected, if you are finding that some apps are not showing up with certain search terms it may actually be the developer not entering enough detail to show up in the search (missing keywords, bad descriptions, etc.)
Automatic updating doesnt work for everyone tho, some apps when updated are broken etc so the option to do it as and when you want is a bonus.
As far as work goes, MS should take a leaf out of the "Play Store" book, especially when it comes to searching for apps from the same people, perhaps change it so where it says who wrote an app you can tap on that bit and it shows you all the apps by that person/company, that'd be a big one for me..

Actually the search is not intuitive, like Play Store and iTunes. You need to be very specific to get the hits you want. There is an article that discusses this. you would think with Bing techology they would be able to improve it. But you are correct in that it may be the developer's fault with keywords.
Also, on the Start Screen, I want to have the ability to group apps into folders, as I have a ton of apps , and scrolling takes for ever, even with pinching the size down first.
