Is there a way to get tab autocomplete and doskey working in the Terminal Emulator? Possibly by editing the initrc?
Also, has anyone found out any cool things they've done with the Terminal? Perhaps a good text editor? So far I was amazed that ssh actually works quite flawlessly.
Is it possible to install a different text editor other than vi?
you could run "ash" and have autocomplete and history.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for!
Anyone else have other things they've done with the terminal?
Is there any way to install a different text editor like emacs?

Lo all, great phone this, I really like it.
One thing that bothers me though:
When using a listing like the WMphonebook, when I scroll down and select an entry and accidentally press the one next to it and then press "return" I'm at the top of the PB-list again. Meh.
Anyone know a tweak or program to make it remember the last position in a long listing? Both Phonebook and filelistings would be useful f ex.
Also has anyone got a way to Cut/paste w/out an extra program or do i need a separate program for that? Try f ex copying a phonenumber from Contacts list and try pasting it into another application.
Cheers beforehand,
Paul

i do this by switching to WinMobile standard keybord and Ctrl+X, C, V
Cheers, how can I switch to the standard windows keyboard? Only got the numbers and the Qwerty ones?
After looking alot around the net I found Fingerkeyboard which gives a nice layout keyboard and Cut/paste-functionality wherever there is a SIP.
Can recommend it.

Somehow I can't seem to find the Question mark on iot though.
Still It can be fixed.
Anyone found a solution to returning to the same spot in listings?
Bump anyone?
Hey can anyone tell my why when i install a program, after i reboot my phone, it doesnt display the app name in the all programs list. After rooting I installed Terminal Emulator, Meebo, AdFree and PicMe.
After I reboot, I no longer see the app name but the package name.
Terminal Emulator is displaying com.android.term
Picme is displaying com.bw.picme
Meebo is displaying com.meebo
but adfree is displaying AdFree.. it's perfectly fine
any ideas? it's just a little frustrating

Thank you, did a search, but wasn't getting the right results.
I did the Hello, Android tut, and am clueless. java is like Klingon to me lol.
On to the point. All i need is a simple app that has 2 buttons, that will run 2 shell scripts. Thats it!
I can probably even tweak the ui myself if its done in xml. Just need the java code done.
Anyone who can help me out with this would be great.
If anyone want to help me out with the learning part, even better. I'd love to code my own apps. Just utterly lost in java.
cheers
Perhaps try out GScript:

And it's open source! http://code.google.com/p/gscript-android/
When I was learning design, I often found it easier to learn by 'reverse engineering' the art work. Basically picking apart and seeing how that was done.

What they said.
It sounds like GScript will do exactly what you need. And once you get the basics of a programming language down, it's a lot easier to learn more by picking apart existing programs to see how they work. Change a few lines, see what impact it has on the program's function. Break it, fix it. Best way to learn is by doing.
But if you just want to be able to run two quick shell scripts, GScript is your answer.
Good luck!
Thought about Gscript last night actually after I made this post. And I agree, i deff learn better by hacking up already completed stuff.
I do have one question though.
I figured out one additional step I need done. I don't care if the app does it or if I can implement it into my script. Just needs to be done.
I need to for the market to re-checkin. I know this can be done via the dialer, but i'm sure there is a simpler way to do this. Anyone know?

What?
you can dial
*#*#CHECKIN#*#*
and it will checkin with the google servers again.
I'm sure there is another way to do this though. A command or something..
Found this guide on AndroidCentral. Worked for me, happily Swyping again
Did the same, swipe good!
Glad to hear it.
A little note to add, it'll save you future installers some confusion:
After you've gone through the entire install process and made sure Swype is checked in your Language and Keyboard settings, open Messaging, tap Compose message, and tap and hold in the "Tap to add text area". After a few seconds let up and you should see a popup with Input Method. Select Swype and you should be good to go.

Is this a guide for non rooted users?
Yes it is...
It Works
Nice find. I tried using the program yesterday without the command prompt and had no luck. This made my day!
Thanks for the find can't wait to try
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Glad it was helpful guys. I wrote it up because it took me forever to figure out (although it was on the Swype forums) where the temporary package is stored when you are running the installer.
Plus I did the command prompt commands because I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that hate GUIs like I do.
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the help.
Keyboard itself isn't activated.
I was able to actually install Swype, but how do I activate it on the phone for SMS, and other apps?
NVM. lol.

Good work
SWM alone didn't get Swype installed for me, but your guide did.
Just installed on my rooted Inspire 4G. Works great. Little bit of a learning curve, but i really like it
hey just wondering what apps you guys are using for your terminal emulator..I'm using a free one called "Android Terminal Emulator" from Jack Palevich, but when I use it with my hardware keyboard, I can't figure out how to type forward slashes. Any time I try, the ~ character comes up instead, anybody else have this problem, or can maybe suggest another terminal emulator app to use?
hate to say it, but the way i've been getting around this for now is to just slide the keyboard in and toggle the soft keyboard to get the slashes, or any special characters.
Just about every alternate character on the hardware keyboard comes up as a tilde.
Others have mentioned this problem here before, I don't know if any other terminal emulator was suggested.
This one is the one I use, and it sucks to slide the keyboard in and out so much, but I don't want to use the on-screen keyboard as much as possible.
gahh...that's really annoying. I'll look for other terminal emulators and let you know if I find a good one..

Every terminal emulator I've tried screws up the / ? key and the [email protected] key
Connect locally in ConnectBot, works flawlessly for me.

Dude, you have saved my sanity! The / key is probably one of the more important keys if you're using a terminal emulator. Toggling the soft keyboard sucked! This is much better, thanks for the find!
