Someone make this app - G1 Android Development

To Dev:
Make an app where it asks if you'd like to save apps/memory/cache/etc to your SD card. =\

We already have that in two forms...
LucidREM's version of JF
Just open up terminal emu and type:
su
copy.sh app
copy.sh data (if u want to move data/data to sd)
And we have Astro. You can back up your apps to the sd card...
Simple as that...
There isn't a script thhat moves Cache to SD, but it's still extremely easy.

It's funny to see someone barking orders at developers when they can't even be bothered to search or read.
If you can't do the research what makes you think someone is going to jump just because you demand it?

Actually there is.
It's post on this forum somewhere, it's called transfer.sh

I saw THOSE posts but that's not exactly what I meant.

i'm guessing he wants an app that does the "run apps from sd card" hack

I think the OP wants a GUI to do it prettily, how about someone throw it together and put it up on the market, a fair price (hahahaha) would be $10. This might motivate the lazy folk who are terrified of the terminal to figure these rather simple processes out.
Honestly, with the scripts already written, all you have to do is enter a couple quick and easy commands into the terminal and bam! No problem.
It's one thing to ask for help doing something, it is quite another to ask someone to do all the work for you. Just my opinion.

the way i read the post seems like he wants to install apps BOTH on his sdcard and phone and have an app that can let him/her choose/select whether to install on sdcard or phone itself, not a awful question
but in my mind whats wrong with haviing ALL the apps on the sdcard, theres virtually no lag and you get more space on you phone
while on the sdcard app topic i got another question, only need a yes or no so i wont make a new thread:
- i have a 8gb card with 1gb ext2 and the rest fat32
- im am looking to buy a 16gb card and have a 2gb ext2
- can i copy paste all the files on the from ext2 to the other?
- do i need a memcard reader? because i dont see the ext partition when i mount my phone?

Copying from one SD card to another should work. If not, just undo the apps-to-SD process by moving the files back to the phone (there should be instructions in this thread near the bottom) and re-do it with the other SD card.
I'm fairly certain you won't have to do the latter, though.
Depends- Are you on Windows?
If so, use a Live CD of Ubuntu to boot into (installing is optional), it will effectively allow you to view the ext2 partition (as Windows doesn't read ext2 partitions)
Good luck

you will need two things .. a card reader .. linux .. you can attempt to undo the apps to SD as stated but if you lack the space on the phone now you've run into a problem .. most people move apps to the SD because they lack space on the phone so trying to put them back will bring trouble
since many people have already touched on this i'll just direct you to the other thread:

Easier way to get apps on sdcard

Like always make sure you have a apps to sd rom. I would recomned haykuros 5.0.2 G r3 build with apps to sd.
I am not going to cover how to do this here as there is already alot of tutorials explaining this already.
First you should use a card reader and your favorite partioning program to shrink the fat32 partion and make a ext2 partition I would recomend atleast 100 mb. I used acronis disk director suite to make partition. Paragon or any other disk management program would work.
Once completed go download this www.tauruspc.net/scripts.zip
Extract the two scripts to your sdcard and then put back in phone.
Forgot to mention. These scripts move the data and dalvik-cache just FYI
Per other threads says sometime people have problems. But I have ran these on 5 devices with 3 different roms with no issues.
If this is the first time you are putting on apps to sdcard or that build
Download terminal from market and use these two commands
su
sh /sdcard/appstosd.sh
Once that is done reboot phone to recovery console by home and power button to turn on and then apt x
you should get a prompt then and use these two commands
mount sdcard
sh /sdcard/appstosd2.sh
If all goes well phone should restart and when if backup and running enjoy having all apps on sd and a permanent 73 mb free on the phone.
After performing these steps my G1 hangs on the "T-Mobile G1" boot screen.
What software are you running. And you need have apps to sd first with a formated memory card with an ext2 part. Because if you don't have formated card will not work. When you ran script did you get any errors?
script name
hello
the script down load as appstosd1.sh and appstosd2.sh and your post says the 1st one is appstosd.sh
I just rebooted the phone on the 2nd part, i hope this works :/
ive tried like 5 or 6 different ways and thus far none are working
[email protected]
If it works great but my advice guys if it ain't broke don't fix it, its already easy enough with all the tutorials out there.
Why not just use this app:

Install the APK and run the app. How much easier can you get? (Yes you still have to format your card but thats easy.

I am running 5.0.2G-A2SD, I have the sd-card formatted properly.. oh well, the I just followed the other tutorials out there and it worked flawlessly.
EDIT: Okay so I tried this again for the sake of testing, and I can confirm that it works. I guess I did something wrong the first time around.
quick question, do you have to leave the scripts on the sd card or can you take them off when your thru?

You can take them off.. they are just scripts to install the apps to sd. I can also confirm 73MB internal memory.. thank you for these wonderful scripts OP
EDIT: Hmm.. my browser does not seem to work anymore.
i'm getting an error "the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly."
also, tried a reboot and it hung on android screen for ever. did a wipe and had to re-do the scripts for appstosd, still receieving the error above.
Yeah I'm getting force close for anything I click on in the notification bar.
Ok can someone walk me through partitioning my sd card? I have Paragon Partition Manager 9 Pro, and when I delete the partition on my sd, it wont let me create a new one, and it always goes back to saying the whole card is partitioned as an FAT32 when it jus said unallocated
Thanks man. Worked great. Hopefullly I don't run into any future problems.

I don't have the link offhand but if you go over to androidcommunity I think you can do a search for a tutorial on how to use Paragon. Good luck.
i think you forgot to mention that a class 6 card is needed to move data/data over to the sd card
im using a class 4 card and when i moved data/data over to my sd card my phone would lock up without me doing anytihng. within 2 seconds of seeing the lock screen it would lag and then force close constantly.
i tried to move it numerous times. no luck
if u have a class 2 card dont even try moving apps to sd
and if u have a class 4 moving everything except data/data and dalvik-cache will be fine. ive moved my dalvik-cache over to my sd card and not that many problems. the ocasional force close but w/e
summary :-D
class 6 = only for moving everything over
class 4 = everything except data/data and dalvik cache
class 2 = buy a class 4 or class 6 card

Partitions, appstosd, MoDaCo

I used the recovery partition to create FAT32, ext2, and swap partitions on my sd card.
1) What size does it make each of these partitions?
2) What is each used for?
3) When loading the MoDaCo update.zip (and rebooting after first boot) after creating these partitions, what does it do with each of them? My free space on each seems to change, and I think it's loading some apps to the SD card? But not others?
4) How do you see how much space remains on the fat32 and ext2 partitions? Which one is shown in the SD card info settings page, and which one is used for USB mass storage mode? Neither seems to change much even after I install a bunch of >1MB apps.
Thanks for any help.
Also, what's taking up all my internal phone space? If the update.zip moved apps to the SD card, why do I only have 50 MB left of internal space?

32 mb swap, 500mb ext2 rest fat32
swap is for linux swap if its used in the rom, ext2 is for your apps, and fat32 is for your storage
yes it loads all of your /data/app and /data/app-private apps on your sd card, your /system/app stays there
you can do a df -h under adb to see your free space

The Fat32 is normal files like music, pictures, etc. The ext2 is used for apps2sd. Don't worry, 500MB is more than enough for this. The swap is used for bakcground applications so they run better without slowing the phone down as much.

The Fat32 it shouldnt do anything. Obviously you will have less space because the other partitions are taking some of it's space. It loads the apps onto your ext2 partition but not all of them. System apps such as the calculator, browser, phone, etc stay on the system partition because it's faster.

Do you have Windows, Linux or Mac. I don't know about Mac but I know Linux can view ext partitions natively (obviously, it's the native filesystem). For Windows you might be able to load the disk management application but if that doesnt show it you need a partitioning application or any other application that can read ext partitions off an sdcard. Don't know any off hand except paragon partitioning manager 9.0 (8.0 never seemed to work with my sd cards)

That answers my questions, thank you.
I found another though. I unmounted my SD card via Settings to see if the apps would fail to work in an effort to try to figure out if they were actually installed there. Predictably, they failed to work, but the system didn't pick the card back up after I reinserted it. So I rebooted the phone with the SD card in.
Then everything died. The apps didn't come back, but the phone still had them listed and tried to launch them, resulting in force-closes. An ext2 repair didn't fix it, so I just went back to my last Nandroid backup and reapplied update.zip.
I learned that this is a Bad Thing to do, but I'm wondering if this was a fluke or is it generally inadvisable to unmount the SD card for this reason?
im a noob to the whole android thing.but how do i partition the sd card and create ext2?????

Since this is a simple symlink, if you reboot the phone without the target of the symlink being there, and the phone tries to use it...
The results are left as an exercise for the reader.
Now for anyone who asks why it isn't smart enough not to break... that's like asking why your car doesn't run if you take half the spak plugs out.

Because booting the phone with it thinking the app was installed but it not able to find it trashed other data structures.
BTW, people trying to do stuff with the SD card removed after putting the apps on the SD card is probably one of the main reasons it currently is root only.
The OS needs to be modified to handle removable app storage gracefully (not something that happens in a standard phone.)
So should you format the card prior to flashing Modaco's ROM so the system knows to install all the apps to the ex2 partition. Or can you format the card AFTER you have already flashed Modaco's ROM and still have the apps automatically install on ext2 partition? I only ask cuz I formatted after flashing the ROM and wanna make sure it's installing it on the ext2.
I formatted mine afterwards and it moved all my apps over to the sd card automatically.

Deleting Fat32 and Ext4 part of SD Card with Gparted

Hi,
I have one question, for the new cyanogen mod update 4.2.15.1 I deleted the Ext4 part of my SD card with Gparted and installed everything new. Now I saw that I still have my old pictures on the phone. If I want to delete everything (no old stuff on the phone any more) do I need to format the Fat32 folder as well? Will I have problems with the phone after that or is after the installation of the DRC83_base_defanged.zip everything runs smooth?
Maybe someone could help me with that, I don't wanna delete datas from the phone (fat32 part) what I couldn't install later.
Juergen
First of all, what does this have anything to do with android development? Can you post in the right section?
Second, your topic tells us what you did. Ok..
You still the old pics on your phone cause it's on another partition on your sd card... You should at LEAST know taht
Third, I don't even understand what you're asking.
1) You deleted Ext4
2) Installed everything new, what does that mean? I assume a new rom, but another ext? or what? Did you wipe the whole SD card? Partition it? Learn to be more specific
3) You saw that you have old pictures on the phone... ok...
4) If you want to delete everything, format the fat32 folder? Fat32 Folder??? Do you mean the fat32 partition on the SD card? And yes, if you don't want no old stuff anymore, you delete the things that are on the SD card.
5) I assume that you just wanna delete everything and I assume that your pictures are on that sd card. You know, you can put stuff on and delete stuff on an SD card. It's there for that reason. It won't cause problems.
If you took out your sd card when it has an ext and using a2sd then you'd have problems.
But still, You make absolutely no sense. From my knowledge, when you take pictures or stuff, it doesn't go on the ext. You say, "If I want to delete everything, do i need to format the fat32?" Then you say you don't wanna delete the data on the fat32 from your phone. What is your question? Do you want to delete or not? You install stuff on the fat32 part? Normally people have stuff installed in the Ext part.

I cant answer this until I'm sure of what you even want to do. And what does DRC83_base_defanged.zip have anything to do with this right now? You flash that before flashing CM. I'm not sure why you want to suddenly install that
If what you wanted to do was keep everything from your SD card and get rid of the Ext, well then.. back up your sd card and partition the sd card.
the only thing I want to know is if there's anything I need to consider when I'm deleting my fat32 partition ? I formated my ext4, wiped it and installed the new rom.

[Q] Missing Internal SD

Hey sorry if this is posted somewhere else but I dont know where to look and I looked on google for you guys who want to post that google thing.
Anyways, after installing roms from CM7 or even eagle, my internal sd card does not show up in file or root explorer. Its shown in the storage sections but not where i can access the information on there from the phone's file system.
When i restore back to stock (but rooted) rom its back to normal!
Its there, just hidden and named emmc. This is why root explorer is a must own app, it allows to see tons of hidden files you would otherwise not see. I'm sure there's other free apps that can do the same but root explorer has saved me from so many headaches it was an instant buy in market.
The 1 major gripe I ever had with this phone was the way they partitioned the internal storage, whoever decided that was a complete moron!
Edit:
Look under mnt/emmc with root explorer

Thanks but how do I use it for normal everyday stuff? I guess i cant with CM7?
Sure you can, just move stuff from sdcard to mnt/emmc with root explorer. I know its a pain and one of the reasons I started a request thread to see if there was a way to bind/combine both partitions into 1 so we'd all have more internal space for installing apps/games.

Do you use an external sdcard with your g2x, or do you use only the internal? There is a potentially easy solution if you want to use CM7 and keep the internal card as your primary. I'll tell you how step by step, but depending on if you use an external card and what you use it for, more or less steps will be involved. So I'll wait for your answer so I can give you the right response.

I personally prefer to keep my backups and personal data on an external/removable sdcard. Its safer that way in case anything happens to the phones internal memory, all my documents and backups are safe and I can put my sdcard into my computer or another phone to retrieve it. Also, I'd much rather have 32gb of storage for all that rather than the 5gb you'll have with the internal card.
That said, its personal preference and always good to have options. Here's how I have mine setup with CM7 (I'll explain how to achieve the setup you want in a moment):
- My external removable card is mounted at /mnt/sdcard. This is the default setup of CM7.
- My internal sdcard (emmc) is mounted at /mnt/sdcard/_OtherSD. CM7 default is to mount it at /mnt/emmc, which means if I have photos, music and movies stored there they wont show up in some of my apps. By having it mounted to a directory inside my /mnt/sdcard directory, any app that looks at my external sdcard will also see what's stored on the internal sdcard. This is similar to the stock setup, except that with stock the external card is mounted as /mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD.
But if you want the internal to be your primary sdcard then here are a couple of fixes for you. The quickest fix is this:
- Go to Settings > Cyanogenmod settings > Application
- Select "Use internal storage"
- Reboot phone
- Now your internal card will be mounted at /mnt/sdcard and your external card at /mnt/emmc
- This makes your internal card your main sdcard but leaves you external card mostly unusable because of its mount point.
So if you are like me and you like for things to be labeled properly and usable then continue reading. This works with CM7 (it wont work with stock), and I also recommend having root explorer (from the Market). My instructions will be specific to root explorer, although you can use any root text editor you want. You will need to edit 2 files (/system/build.prop and /system/etc/vold.fstab):
- Using root explorer navigate to your /system directory.
- At the top of the screen select "Mount R/W"
- Scroll down and find the /system/build.prop file. Long-press on it and select to open in text editor.
- Scroll about halfway down the file and find the section that says "
# Mount the internal SD card, too
- Where it says "ro.additionalmounts=" specify a directory by typing its full path. I use /mnt/sdcard/_OtherSD. This is the mount point you will use in the vold.fstab file (which you'll edit in a moment)
- The very next line says "ro.vold.switchablepair=" .. These are the mount points that get swapped when you enable that setting in CM7. Change the options to match the mount points you will want to use. So for me it says "/mnt/sdcard,/mnt/sdcard/_OtherSD" ... of course no quotation marks.
- Select Menu > Save & Exit. One nice feature of root explorer is that it automatically saves your original file as a backup in case there are any problems.
- Now navigate to /system/etc
- Make sure the directory is still mounted as R/W, scroll down and open the file /system/etc/vold.fstab. This file specifies where both the external and internal sdcards are actually mounted. Each drive/device has its own entry.
- Find the line that starts with dev_mount emmc /mnt/emmc" and change it to match the mount point you created in the build.prop file. So for me I change it to "dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard/_OtherSD"
- Select Menu > Save & Exit
- Reboot phone
Now when you use the CM7 settings option to use internal storage, it will swap them but still keep one mounted within the other so any music, pics, videos you have will be usable by all your apps.
****PLEASE NOTE**** -- These changes will be overwritten if you flash a new nightly.

Just plain CM7. I think I'm using nightly 144. The method should be the same or similar on other cm7-based roms. It just won't work on stock-based roms because the changes to the files get overwritten when you reboot.

I've been trying to edit the vold.stab etc on my phone forever trying to get that to work and I haven't gotten it figured out (still a Linux noob, probably always will be). I realize most people seem to prefer the already available options to remount it inside the external SD card or vice versa, but honestly I really just want it combined with the internal memory. Others say that is pointless because 1.5GB should be plenty of space, but honestly if I were to install all the apps on my Transformer onto my phone, my phone would almost immediately run out of internal space.

I wonder what would happen if the phone was physically repartitioned ... I don't know enough of how Android works to know what effects that would have. Obviously the disk is just a disk and you can create whatever partition sizes you want. Is the OS designed to look for a certain number of partitions and partition sizes on each phone? Or will it just use what's there?

I found an app that has made the 1.5gb internal storage manageable, look in the market for link2sd. Basicly it allows you to move any app/game to the extra partition on your sdcard(I made a 4gb partition) I'm amazed how stable it runs! After trying numerous apps2sd programs and them being unstable plus running out of internal space too quickly, link2sd is a godsend! It allows even dalvik cache moving to SD extra and batch selecting/deselecting for ultra quick installs. I can't reccommend this app enough for people having internal storage space problems.
As for the internal SD card being combined with the 1.5gb storage I put up a request thread on it hoping a Dev would know how to.. until that happens tho link2sd has made me proud.

Some of the asshats on that thread made me laugh with their ignorance.

I can move apps to external storage by default with CM7. This is not the solution I am looking for , but thank you for trying.

The difference between apps2sd which your using and link2sd which i'm using is that with apps2sd your internal memory will run out much faster then if using link2sd which can also move dalvikcache to sd ext. I've already moved 300 apps/games to sd ext with link2sd and still have over 1gb of internal storage, try doing that with apps2sd
Edit: forgot to mention link2sd is a free app in market.

[Q] G2X, cant mount sdcard on cm7

Hi,
I have a g2x and i recently rooted it using superoneclick and i tried to back up using nvflash
however when i boot into recovery and try to install a zip or do anything with an sdcard, it says cant mount sdcard.
i ended up installing cyanogenmod 7 using rom manager.
but at the moment i cant do anything that involves using the sdcard because it cant mount.
any ideas on how to fix this?
thanks in advance
When you're in recovery, have you simply tried taking out the memory card then putting it back in?
Sometimes the simplest solutions work. It used to not mount my sd card too and just popping it out and back in made it read it.

It's the way they memory is partitioned. ~3 GB for the System and Apps, 5GB for other stuff. There's a workaround/fix for CM7 in the development forum (atleast I think there was) but I don't know if it works anymore.

Right now if I go to storage in settings I have my SD card then I have internal storage with 1.48 gigs and then I have additional storage /mnt/emmc which has 5.21 gigs. At the moment apps installed from the android market go to the internal storage and apps online go to the SD card but I can move them to the internal memory. It seems that at the moment the one place with the most memory can't be used so I'm guessing thats the partition your talking about
o there's no way of changing this partition?
And can you give me the link to that? Thanks
Yaay got the SD card working in recovery it worked taking it out and putting it in again

You're right, I don't believe it can be used (natively for apps atleast, you can always move media and files there). Unless you mount that internal partition to be the external SD card and do a Move to SD on the apps (both are settings in Android/CM7 somewhere) there's not much else you can do. The problem is that some apps don't work on the SD, of course you could keep those on the system partition.
Sorry if my replies are starting to get confusing, it's late here.
I use link2sd which creates a mount point script that uses the extra partition on external sdcard. I used minitool partitioned to create a 10gb ext4 on my 32gb class 10( I'm an app junkie lol). Most if not all apps/games moved with link2sd work flawlessly, I'm happy with it

thanks i think i managed to get it! i found the settings i think you're talking about in the cyanogenmod settings and managed to switch the sdcard and additional storage. now the 5 gigs appears as the sdcard and the actual external microsd appears as the additional storage
i guess thats the best im gonna get
thanks a lot!!
