Vito has finally released Winterface 1.3 mobile shell, with a second skin and full screen toggle. See here: Vito Winterface 1.3 Released
wow - I like this a lot - the only minor quibble is that the email notification does not seem to work.
I've had that before too. It was listed as fixed for this release. Did you send it to support yet?

I doubt that was the thinking behind it as the current windows interface was designed about eight years before the iphone appeared...
I just think it's a lot simpler - a grid is the ideal format for a phone.
Unfortunately this version of Winterface seems to have introduced a host of new bugs. I've used it since v1.0 and each release has been fairly stable for me, this one not at all. Crashes, strange bugs limiting the number of icons per screen and icons randomly rearranging on restart, quirks with the lock/unlock feature... all experienced after a hard reset and not an update. Pretty bad, to the point I pulled it off my device until the bugs get quashed (I made my bug reports and was informed v1.3.1 is already underway). Also the new bright skin uses h-u-g-e buttons/icons and really limits usability in comparison to the dark skin.
Going back to 1.2 for now
Be aware that if you load 1.3 and take a look at the new white skin with the new huge buttons your buttons and screens will be rearranged. If you go back to the black skin they will NOT go back to the way you had them
email notification and vm notification seemed to be cross linked. Constant errors and program crashes. For the new skin and a few minor new features it is not worth the time to install.
I hate that whenever you open a program and then close it it closes winterface as well. I also don't like that you cannot change which programs are opened when hitting button (like calendar opening thumbcal or hitting the clock and open gAlarm) And When you add programs the icon styles never match (with any version of winterface)

To get Winterface back when you are viewing a different program, you don't have to close it but press Ok-button instead. This is the way Windows Mobile works. Anyway, you have that big Winterface button on your today screen to return to Winterface in a split second.
The programs launched by those buttons is determined by the default programs registered in your device I believe. When I use AgendaOne and set it as the default calendar program, this is the one that will show up when I tap the Calendar button.
I've been skinning my Winterface since version 1.2 thanks to the skins posted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455254
I have been pushing for a "top bar" displaying notifications, time, signal, etc for awhile so I was excited to hear about the 1.3 release, however I think VITO failed by reducing the number of icons/page when the top bar is displayed rather than resizing them or squeezing them together a bit. Even though I very much wanted the top bar, I am forced to continue to use Winterface in full screen mode because of the poor allocation of screen space when the top bar is displayed.

Hey oVan - are you saying that when you click the interactive calendar icon (the one that shows the current date and how many appts you have) that you got it to open AgendaOne from its popup screen? I've been trying to get this icon to open ThumbCal and have had no luck at all.
I've set Thumbcal as default calendar, changed the calendar.lnk in the start menu to launch Thumbcal, created a calendar.exe (using mortscript) that launches thumbcal and put that in the Windows folder all with no luck.
Can you please confirm you have this functionality because I didn't think this was possible?
Thanks
Winterface freezes
Hi,
I try to use Winterface 1.3 in my HTC Wizard, but it was keep freezing my phone. I had to reset my phone at least 3 times everyday. I decided to remove 1.3 version and put the version 1.2 back and it's been working fine. Did anybody else experienced the same problem?

Hi, I am interested in the taskbar layout seen in the screenshot below.
Does anyone know what program it is ?
Looks like it might be usefull & I would like to try it but first I need the name so I can find out more.
Many thanks.
It's some of my voodoo, PhoneAlarm running a custom skin coupled with my VJToggleToday (I or II, depending on your OS) to map it as a replacement start bar.
All the gubbins are available here:

Voodoo.....
Was wondering my MDAIII feels like its got needles sticking out of it.
For some reason, when writing that post, I was thinking about Monkey Island and the voodoo lady/rubber chicken. Don't know why.
Although most of my programming requires the sacrificing of farmyard animals
V
vijay555, doesn't your phone crawl to a halt with all those things on your today screen? (like ages waking from standby, switching to today screen etc)
Cheers
Si
Mudstuffin: in the screenshow, I'm running PhoneAlarm with my skin, at the top (using VJToggleToday to remove the softkeys and the start bar at the top), then AlarmToday with some custom hacks, weather plugin, can't remember which, VJTodaySpacer, and finally VJEphemeris.
So it's not many today plugins, just 4 (not including VJTodaySpacer).
VJEphemeris has a lot of functionality, but it's highly optimised so it doesn't use the resources of say 5 different today plugins - it replaces my quotes plugin, claunch, a battery meter, VJAudioNotes = a plugin I wrote to show my current operator and telephone number (because I use a dual sim), incoming SMS, missed calls, and a huge stonking analog clock/alarm indicator/calendar shortcut. The layour is optimised for right handed thumb usage.
All in, it works extremely well. I suggest you set up your system efficiently first, make a backup, and then try the various today plugins you want. Don't go for bells and whistles, stick with efficient and effective. This setup works very well for me; I like the idea of Wisbar etc, but find that I can do most of what I need one handed with this setup. That's paramount for me.
I've never had problems of the system slowing down or running out of resources, although I use VJOkButt to close running apps, so the only thing ever running is one app, the Phone, and Today.

vijay, that quotes today plugin, what is it called?. it looks nice.. can i download it somewhere?
The quotes plugin is part of VJEphemeris, but it's based on code for VJQOTD, which is based on QOTD.
QOTD is open source, google for it, VJQOTD is unreleased although I make it available if asked, and VJEphemeris is unreleased. The VJEphemeris version is much improved/re-written, self resizing according to quote size etc and quote navigation etc.
You can see VJQOTD at the bottom of this (old) screenshot:

thanx vijay

I love the new Touch flo interface. Perhaps I am asking too much but is there a contacts program with this type of interface? It is the biggest thing I notice when using the phone - most other programs are nice and black/grey but the contacts is plain old WM style. I have the random access installed which helps a little but I would prefer the whole interface. Any suggestons?
Thanks
Allan
Have a look at PocketCM Contact
Its not bad but feels a little buggy in use Any other suggestions?
Contact program
Try vito contact fun. amazing contact program. wery good and colorfull.

Do you have a link to it?
Thanks
Allan
Allan,
Link is here : http://iwindowsmobile.com/contact-manager.html
Although a little confused about why you say PocketCM feels buggy?
I've used it since it came out, think it's a lovely piece of software (and considering it's free it's a right bonus!!).
I installed it, changed the theme to Touch and my keyboard went down so I couldnt see the bottom menu options, the colours meant I could sometimes see the contacts, sometimes couldnt. I couldnt close it since it also got rid of the top start menu bar - just not nice to use really. I want something that feels familiar.
Get ya. The other link should be fine then, it's really nice, not used it much so don't know how customisable it is, but for about a fiver you can't really go wrong.
Had a look at the FunContact and it is better but 2 things wrong with it (1 Major, 1 Minor).
1) (Major) I do not want to wait a few seconds every time I access my contacts for the program to load - and I do not like the lack of button to close (have to select menu and then exit).
2) (Minor) Still doesnt fit in theme-wise with the HTC theme - customisable colours would be great.
So, I am still on the look for something to replace the boring old outlook-style contacts, anyone?
Thanks
Allan
this is the best, IMHO http://sunnysoft.com/software.php?idarticle=296
I have used both PocketCM and FunContact. I found PCM to run a bit slow on the TC even with the latest .20b version. FunContact is the more polished of the two but I found two annoying issues: 1) splash screen when loading the app, and 2) there's not a quick way to exit the app besides going thru several button presses.
The Sunnysoft app looks interesting but it has the same awful letter bar as the default contacts app. I like the finger-slide type of FC and PCM.
You could minimize it then the next time you open your contacts it will open without going through the prolonged startup.
Hello. I am a bit unhappy Touch PRO user because I love touchflo interface but would like also to use system tray-controlled software like openvpn or vsUtil.
I already installed secondtoday (also replaced the "Phone" softkey with it) but there is no way to make REAL tray icons appear there, only fake launcher stuff with Homescreen PLusPlus. The way left to access tray-controlled apps is to quit tochflo today plugin thru loooong series of taps thru settings.
I-d love an alternative such as make real tray icons still appear in Secondtoday or a lightweight tray icons porting popup app. Any other ideas/clues how to get an easy access to tray icons from touchfo....
Thanks for reading
Looking forward to hear Your thoughts
I agree.
My office forces us to use the Good email system. That software uses its own version of the email client, calendar and contacts. I'd like to reassign the tray "buttons" to point to the Good programs rather than being stuck with quick links to now unused versions of email, calendar and contacts.
Ira
Hi,
did you find a solution to the problem in the meantime?
Without the trayicons i have to choose between a pretty finger-enabled gui or using my universities WLAN.
Kind regards,
samoht
[double post]
i assume you are talking about enlargetitlebar which which gives you easier hits on the "system tray" notifications. you should be able to disable it in the registry. mess around in hklm\software\htc. there might be an enable dword you can set to 0. i dont have it installed on my rom and i kind of miss it so i may try to get it back on my next flash.
No, i refer to the system tray at the bottom of today screen as shown in this screenshot.
The manilla interface is drawn on top of it and theres no easy way to access it. I have to disable touchflo in the settings, then start openvpn and afterwars reactivate touchflo. This is annoying... too bad openvpn relies on this.
oh yeah. forgot all about that thing. havent seen it in years. try a tf3d to today switcher thing. ive seen ones that it changes the left home tab soft key to the words "today" which lets you have a second today screen and today items and i guess the system tray too along side tf3d. ill try to find it again.
edit: try this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480475
@The Jack of Clubs:
Thanks so much! This works for me, i can switch between classic today screen and manilla rather fast!

like the title really,
I couldn't wait to get my hands on my TP, however soon after I got it I realised that TF3D seemed to be all form and no function.
I immediately replaced it with Mobile Shell which I find much easier to use.
for example, when I want to phone someone, I hit the contacts button and I have a screen with 16 faces, I hit one and press call. In TF3D, I have to hit (or scroll) to the contact button, then scroll down again to find the person etc.
For text messages, I like to have the list on the screen that I can easily scroll through. In TF3D I can see one at a time only.
The downside...is that MS seems to be lagging behind on the themes front, and I like to have a theme that matches my mood...which is xmas at the moment.
so, my real question is what wonderful options are available to make TF3D more usable?
Unfortunately you don't have many options if your talking about changing the way that TF3D functions. There are a number of speed increases, and a few small tweaks such as the zoom function cab that lets you increase and decrease the size of the text messages in TF3D. If you like having all the contacts on one scren though, TF2D is like that. All the pictures are laid out like tiles. But with TF3D you can just click the contacts button on the bottom right of the screen and pull up all your contacts. TF3D wasn't really meant to be a full-fledged os; just a today plugin that you could use to see a good amount of information.
SPB replaced mine as well
Moved to Fuze (p4600) from p3600. Was using SBP mobile shell. Tried tf3d for about 2 weeks. HATED IT. Looks pretty, but takes too many steps to get to real work. Back to a snappy SPB Mobile Shell on my Fuze.

thanks for the info i'm going to try it
finally...
I just tried it. It ran great on my XV6800. But yeah it was just ok and I don't see myself keeping it.
already taken it off. Maybe i was expecting too much
yea, their original Pointui was much better. This Pointui 2 was such a hassle to install that i could never imagine purchasing it. Also, it just doesn't look very nice.
For the long wait, and all of the "Viva la revolution" quotes on their homepage, it was really a let down. The scrolling does work well though.
That's my take.
The pointui tool to warn the users to the release was not working I did not receive no warn.
I'll try it now.
Well this is a beta (I have to remind myself), and I am going to use it exclusively all day. Maybe I might change my mind. But if not then back to good ole HTC Home.
edit: it just went blank so I had to reset it via the today screen. forget this i will go back to HTC home now.

i second that!
I'm divided. There's not a whole lot to it, but it's "widget"-based and adding more widgets will certainly improve things. As it is, I like it okay. It's prettier than HTC Home and more functional and responsive than M2D, in my opinion.
I've yet to find a Homescreen replacement I really like. HTC's solutions are all weak in the functionality department, I think. SPB is pricey. Winterface is buggy and too minimal. Home 2 isn't perfect, but I think it's pretty close to what I'm looking for, so I'll keep it around for the moment.
I like that it plays nice with the existing Windows top bar instead of trying to replace it like some homescreen replacements. I'm not a big fan of the top bar, but replacing it is always flaky in my experience.
I'm surprised it doesn't include a dialer skin -- didn't Home 1 have a dialer?
I'll continue to look for the perfect UI too, so far my favs are winterface (buggy - not on my fone) and RLtoday. Hopefully, as said before, this being a beta it can only get better
(expect in the case of longhorn and vista lol)
Off topic but I have been using Home 1.5 forever since it is so stable for me. What are the benefits of 2.0 and is it worth it? I don't want to fix something that's not broken.
edit: Back on topic. Yeah it will be interesting to see some custom plugins and themes for Pointui 2.
I think they should have held off a bit longer until they replicated more of the functionality of older versions / BellUI. I hope there's more to come apart from applets because useful as they are they're not a full solution.
However as a basic framework it's cool, and with the addition of user made applets it's got a lot of potential. Will have to see how it goes.
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/198996426/16.02.2009.Pack.rar
theme and applet pack
I tried it and took it off in 5 minutes.
What I like - it offers me a completely different UI feel from what I use (WM 6.1)
What I don't like is the lack of plug in support.
1. Contacts - it doesn't recognize current contact programs (icontact burt edition); it's contacts program doesn't bring in photos (booo)
2. Weather - it didn't pick up my city so that is a complete waste of a tab.
3. Programs - why have a program tab/menu but not automatically pull up all the programs I have. I don't want to reinput that into the ui.
At that point I was fed up.

I am glad some people take some more time to evaluate software. You do have a favorite contact tab with pictures. It is quite easy to add your own city for the weather tab. Alle your programs are available through the menu button. there is probably a lot more functionality you did not discover. Just try to look in the community site of pointui and you'll be surprised.

I looked but didn't want to have to do it AGAIN. I already have my contacts with pictures on my phone that is set (icontactbe6.4.5) and I like it better.
I looked to put my city on the weather and it didn't come up. Why waste my time at this point.
I am looking for improvement to how I use my phone and Point UI wasn't it. Plus I like using QuickMenu to get to my programs. If I didn't have soft-keys on my phone it may be a better option, but I do and it isn't.

It's fine if you don't like Home, but emay was just pointing out that Home 2 DOES do the three things you're asking for.
The contacts manager absolutely does use contact photos.
Adding custom cities to the weather tab is definitely possible, it just requires a quick edit to the applet's XML, and there's a walkthrough on PointUI's site for doing so. They've stated that they'll make it more elegant in the future, but it IS possible now.
There's a full programs list accessed through the menu -- what you were looking at was the "quick list" where you add your favorites. There's a different spot for the full list.
Keep in mind that this is very much a "1.0" release right now. It's stable, fast, and functional, but lacks a lot of the polish and power that will be added as the community adds new applets and the official team adds the features that will make up the "Pro" version.
Personally, I'm REALLY liking Home 2 so far. It's just very solid.
I haven't tried every homescreen replacement out there -- just HTC Home, M2D, M3D, SBP MS 2.0, and ThrottleLauncher. And Home 1, as well.
Home 2 definitely has the best combination of functionality, speed, stability, and flash that I've seen.
I love POINTUI
I found the first version (HOME 1) a year or so ago to use on my PPC. This program proved to make my phone experience much more enjoyable. I have recently attempted to place Pointui 2 on my Tmobile Dash with no success. I know in time they will port ot all to this device, but first they must finish this PPC release. I can not waste until this is available to me.
