There's been a few problems that some people have mentioned, but have either been lost among all the unlocking/upgrading questions or just not followed up for whatever reason. These are some of the issues I had with older versions of wm6 that I tried, which made me go to a wm5 3.3 to get rid of.
1) Auto-fill of names in messaging when typing in the "to" field doesn't happen
2) Windows Live messenger only connecting over GPRS even when wi-fi is enabled
3) I think it's what it's supposed to do, but it's annoying - is there a way to stop Windows Live adding all your contacts to your phone? I don't use my Wizard for e-mails or anything very often, so this is pretty useless, and just fills up my contacts list and then it takes longer to find the people I want to call
4) In the messaging application, the left softkey in wm6 is used for Delete, and to create a new message you have to go into the menu and then select New, whereas wm5 just had New on the left softkey (I'd rather not use 3rd party software to do this, if there is any that can!)
Can't think of any more right now, but feel free to add your own!
Anyone who's got Faria's new wm6 ROM, could you please comment on whether you have encountered any of these issues or if anything has been changed in relation to these?
Thanks,
Myk

Can't speak for much, but from the websites I've seen detailing WM6, #4 is actually a code change to the Messaging app. MS' research indicated more people wanted a Delete button than a New button and they made the switch. I don't know if it's something that can be changed through the registry or not, but it is native to WM6.

When you setup Widnows Live, uncheck the option to import contacts and it doesn't import them. At least thats what works for me.
If it is already configured, open windows live and go into options. choose sync options and uncheck contacts and messenger.

it is the way M$ designed it...they claim it helps battery life...it could not possibly be to make more money off of people by making them use GPRS
I turn off my phone sometime to make it connect via WiFi but faria said in his aku 3.3 ROM he pacaged it so it did not do it...I am trying to find out how to take windows live out of there and install it on WM6?!? but i don't know how I would go about that so if anyone could help please let me know...thanks for reading
Windows Live
Cancelling the GPRS connection before it's complete makes Windows Live switch to Wi-fi anyway, so I don't get why it even tries GPRS first and doesn't just go off wi-fi. Maybe there's a setting somewhere, like when you boot your PC and it goes through the various boot-up devices in order until it finds one that works.
Anyway, my problem with Live contacts being added to the phone contacts... I tried signing in to Windows Live, and going in the options and de-selecting "Synch contacts" as suggested. The problem is, when I try and sign in to Live Messenger, it comes up with a dialog box saying "signing in will add your contacts to your phone" or something, which is exactly the same as before.
Messenger is the only bit of Live (apart from e-mail, I guess) which I'm actually interested in at the minute, but I can't use it because I don't want all the contacts from my messenger account in my phonebook!

Again, This is M$ design. Nothing we can do about this. Messenger live will not work unless the contacts are in your phonebook. Sorry.

I tested it over lunch and think that it is the fix that I needed...but still have to play with it some more to make sure...not enough time during my break
- After palying with it some more I think that All this did was set the GPRS to always off
I would love to learn how to create a fix like this myself but I am still trying to learn how to create some basic .lnk files...i am such a newbie
- Haha just found it...here. Now to learn how to make cab files...something tells me its harder
My device an Atom Life WM 6 has locked up.
-the screen is locked up on windows boot image- cant control pocket pc
-soft reset battery pull anything i can think of does not help
-my safemode program isnt helping
Only option is HARD reset
Before I do that-
surprisingly can receive calls and sync over active sync
how can i back up the following:
- SMS - most important
- Contacts - second important
are there locations of these databases.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you
pim.vol
Hi
The phone module is seperate from the rest of the operating system, hence being able to function when WM has stopped responding.
I think that these databases are in a file called pim.vol. I can't be sure though. Maybe some other members can advise about back up software that runs entirely on the pc. The latest version of Sprite Backup perhaps?
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
If AS works then try Jeyo Mobile Companion, it runs purely on the PC and if it will connect then you should be able to export the stuff you need.
I copied over pim.vol but thats only contacts and tasks/appointments.
Anyone know the location of sms db.??
Unfortunately i do not have spb bakcup installed, dont think i can at this point.
I hope Jeyo works...
thank you
jeyo download sms's automatically.. but you will have to install a client side app.. if it doesn't do that automatically
just a suggestion for the future.
schedule a backup using PIMBackup2.8 to your storage card every once in a while..
the sms and emails are stored in "cemail.vol"
ok go here and install this http://www.mymobiler.com/
Once you have active synced your deivce, you can control it from ur PC
Then find and install PIM backup (using mymobiler). Then backup using PIM backup all your messages, contacts etc.
I find this better than using Sprite backup as this backs up registry too which might not always be a good idea when having problems. Its nice to have a simple PIM back up when needing to do a hardreset.

Me, very long way to go for that. Only been on here for 18 months when work decided they wanted to try something on WM5 phones. That didnt work out and I have snaffled one of them for myself. Have tried many things to get a finger friendly PPC and am as near it as I need.

As a note sprite migrate does not yet transfer sms if you have a WM palm phone or using the palm sms.
did you use it? Sprite said it can?
Sprite Migrate is the easiest way to bring all your mobile data over to Android.
Sprite Migrate can transfer your data from Windows Mobile, Symbian(Nokia) and Blackberry to Android. Currently we transfer Contacts, SMS, Call Logs and Bookmarks, with more content coming soon...

I have, but again if you have the PALM thread SMS installed it won't transfer it. I have spoke to them about this and they said they will add it. The regular WM SMS should just transfer over fine.

What or why is not specifically working? I only ask because that is so far the only App I have seen to do what your asking for.
in my O2 Atom Life, when I press start to begin transferring my data, after the step "Finallizing...", then it stands up and don't process anything; it lags my phone; I waited for 10 mins and I had to reboot my phone

Another way could be transfering sms to some xml format and then import them via some android backup apk. Contacts, mails etc could be ported via ms office and then via gmail acc.
ok, thank you

On your old phone sync with your google calendar. Its a type of exhange sync that google put up to make this easier.
info is here http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=15305
and then once on your new android they will be pulled back down just fine when you setup your phone with your gmail account.

If you can export the numbers out of Outlook into a .csv file...you can import that file into your gmail account. I have a mac and had a similar problem. Exported my numbers out of address book and then uploaded to gmail contacts. Once you do that...you can select in the settings on the phone to allow show contacts with phone numbers. Hope that helps.
so, are the contacts floating in the clouds somewhere or do they get downloaded to the phone?

No, if you import your .csv file into your phone from your Outlook, the contacts are limited to your phone. If you, however, import your .csv into your Google Account, that puts your contacts into the cloud, which will sync with your phone.
If that sounds confusing I'm sure I could throw you a guide together if you like.
thanks, all is clear now
vCards Worked Better For Me
I had problems getting gmail to recognize my CSV even after I tried to organize it like some site said it wanted, so I dumped all of my contacts as vCards using a VBA script I found by searching and then loaded each one into gmail.

I wish I had done it originally, but I was able to sync my contacts back to Outlook using Kies. I would say that that is the way to do it.
I also had problems connecting with Kies on my W7, 64 machine until I downloaded the most recent version (1.5.1.10071_32), downloaded Microsoft .NET Framework 4, and removed my SD card. Now everything connects fine.
Old dude here too. Was going to post (may still if this get info) a new thread but found this thread. I currently rock an old HTC Hermes WM6.1 device. It Sync's all my Work Outlook Contacts & Meetings, and at home all my Outlook Contacts. The Meetings are important, as are the Contacts. I may wait until the WM7 devices start appearing, but the Captivate looks pretty nice and I can get a good premier price.
Will it/Can it sync that info using the Samsung Programs? I don't want to mess with CSV's and gmail, I work for a huge aerospace company and deal with meetings and new contacts daily, need my phone to handle that info on a daily basis. WinXP at work, Win 7 at home....
Thanks!
Kies imported my contacts just fine (it lost groups and photos though).
However it hangs on importing appointments

This is exactly what I did. Worked like a champ
Kies does work on Win 7 - 64 bit with Captivate
I wanted to post a reply to this one because I was frustrated to the extent of giving up on kies, but was finally able to get Kies see my phone (samsung captivate).
So first thing is, it works, you can set Kies to see your phone on Win 7 - 64 bit.
of course, I tried a lot of things back and forth, install and uninstall various drivers etc. but below is what I think will work, please give it a shot if you are unable to get Kies to see your phone on Win 7 - 64 bit.
1. Uninstall any drivers if you have installed (either the USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2 or usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64). [For the 5.02.02 there is a SSADUninstall.exe in the i386 folders, double check on the control panel and uinstall if you see a program listed as Android USB Modem]
2. Install Kies from the UK site samsungapps.com (cannot post URL yet) it does not matter where you download from, the same s/w is on various URLS. I am using Kies_1.5.1.10071_32
3. On the phone, under settings -> applications -> usb settings either select ask on connetion (this is how I have it), but I figure Kies would also work.
4. Plug the phone using the USB cable (I dont know if it really made any difference but I plugged the cable on to one of the back m/b ports as I read on a few forums that it wont work on the front port)
5. Now wait, your pc is going to play a trick, windows will try to install a driver for this and then say it could not find one. Ignore it ! In the meanwhile, you will also notice a warning saying if you want to run a program from Samsung electronics or something like tetrun, say yes and let it continue.
6. Have patience now and in due time, Kies will start (I have also set kies to run in win xp compatibility mode explicitly but it may not be required). You will not see your phone yet. but you continue to wait for another minute.
7. Eventually kies will say on the right side of the app that drivers need to be downloaded for the connected device and will start downloading them. Let is complete. It will then install them. windows will show you the bubble saying it is installing drivers (similar to one that failed earlier). You may click on it and you will see that it installs 3 drivers. I am thinking they are for the mass storage, modem and media player but not sure.
8. Once it is done, it should show a bar oscillating and say 'connecting device'
9. And voila, after some more wait, you should see your phone on the right side in Kies.
Please be patient, it takes quite a while for all these things to go through and you may be start thinking it has gotten stuck.
Now, for the bummer if you want to sync with outlook, it missed out quite a few of my contacts and I am still unable to get the calendar on to my phone. Kies reads it and shows it well but my phone does not show the appointments yet.
But kies will allow you to get photos off or manage contacts etc. so it does help.
If it works for you please post your experience. so others can be more confident.
Best of luck.
I tried everything possible including these instructions, cannot get it to work on windows 7 64-bit.

It was easiest for me to get the contacts on the phone through google. You should be able to sync the iphone contacts with google, then they should sync with the Captivate.
Try the New "Beta" Sprite Migrate"
I am running Win 7 Ult. 64-bit with Office 2010 64-bit and have an HTC Touch Cruise (WM6.1) and just got the Captivate. First, let me say that nothing seems to work with Outlook 2010 64-bit, so no syncing. I did get & Load .Net 4.0 and the UK version of Kies. All that works and I can load stuff onto my SD card. So far update.zip and some ePub eBooks. But as for moving stuff off the WM 6.1 and to the Captivate, the best and easiest option so far has been "Sprite Migrate" a new program, still in Beta. The web site is http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/migrate/how-does-it-work- It is an easy 3 step process. I was able to move almost 800 contacts. It did show some errors after I ran step 3, but all the contact information is there. Now none of my calendar info came over and I am not sure yet what else came over, but all that contact info was the priority and that worked. The program is free. If I find a log file for the errors in step 3 , I will send it to them.
Did it transferred photos with contacts and if it did what was the quality of photos?
Yes, it transfered my photos just fine. No luck on appointments
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I just went from a Tilt to a Captivate and the AT&T rep put all my contacts on the phone. I have been trying to use the voice dial but I am told I need to sync my phone with gmail? I recently created a gmail account but I cannot figure out how to get my contacts set up so I can use this feature...any advice?
Hi all,
I have searched for this application for a long time and tried whole bunch of them, but I am still looking for SOLID, SIMPLE, and STRAIGHTFORWARD application to save Call log entries into Outlook Journal.
My setup:
Windows 7 32-bit
Outlook 2007 SP2
HD2 with latest T-Mo ROM and Cookie Home Tab installed.
Applications I tried:
Maniac's SmartJournal - so far the best solution and worked flawlessly on the XP. Since I switched to Windows 7 it shows that the SmartJournal reads from the device, the notification disappears and nothing happens. Maniac's website is down, so I cannot find out what is going on.
Pocket Informant Outlook Extension - since it is now free as Informant stopped supporting Windows Mobile, I tried it, it seems that it works and does some synchronizing according to the log, but no entry shows up the Journal.
Jeyo Outlook Extension - they used to support Outlook Journal in their version for Symbian, but in their Windows Mobile they only synchronize SMS.
MobiTNT - I tried that software as well, but I am not able to enable the software on the computer.
I know that there is also some app for syncing call log into calendar but it seems way too akward.
I know that there are many threads about this all over the Xda, but they seem to be old for one and do not end up with comprehensive solution afterall.
I would like to this post to become comprehensive and one stop solution for somebody who is looking for the solution like me.
Any ideas are welcome.
Nobody? Really? Really?
I Feel your pain
I used to use Calls to Journal from Chapura with my windows handheld. Strangely it is now discontinued.
It was slick, and perfect. Dumped all calls to Outlook journal and tagged the outlook contacts (so that they showed up in activites). Was perfect in my business when someone denied that you called them.
I can't find anything that compares. Not even close. The other ones like "missing sync" try to do too much and do not include this very simple functionality.
Have you had any luck?
Well, I finally managed to make the Maniac's Smartjournal work and it works great. It transfers the calls into Journal and tags for the known Contacts so it shows in Activities.
If you would like to try it, I have the .exe files since the website is no longer active. The files are really small and the program is no memory hog by any means. I tried Jeyo and it just crashes Outlook.
Let me know.
Another one
I wish i could be more helpful but there is one applicatoin which i have used in the past but have since forgotten the name whichvery simply adds an appointment into outlook which lasts for the duration of the call, with the title of whoever the conversation was with.
this might be the one i was thinking of. I'm gonna check it now.

post the files please & details you have on them & any special instructions on getting it working.
One of the biggest mistakes MS made was not having WM & its PC software linking together with complete harmony & user control.
Really are a clueless bunch at redmond HQ ...
I am attaching the rar file. There are two files. One is SmartJournal.exe and the other is SmartJournal Beta.exe Try first the SmartJournal.exe run as admin and compatibility with XP SP2. Sometimes it shows the error that the CallLog.csv cannot be dumped. If that is the case, uninstall the SmartJournal and install the Beta (again as administrator and compatibility mode XP SP2). Maniac had a great forum unfortunatelly that website is no longer active.
Let me know if you have any trouble.
Take 2
I just realised my previous post was totally useless since I never included the link. I've been using Call Calendar for the past few days which works really well, recording the time, duration, who the call was with and who called who silently into outlook, which will then obviously sync over activesync or exchange. you can get it here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-call-calendar.html
then again while searching for that link i found this program, Phonelog- it's newer and seems to have additional features like recording incoming SMS. I think you can customise what is recorded too, it might be worth a shot:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-phonelog.html
I've never used Outlook journal, so I don't know how much functionality you lose as a result of these being purely appointments. Hope it oculd be useful though.
Thanks for the post and link. I prefere not to use the calendar for syncing, because than the entries eat up the screen when I view my calendar appointments. Also, I always felt siunce the Journal has a Phone log category it is more obvious to use it rather than calendar. Also, I make LOT of calls on given days and then my calendar looks like mess between the actual appointments and the phone call. Also, I checked the review section on freeware.com and lot of people complain about the SMS not working (which would be the only feature why I would consider this software). But great addition to the post and thanks for the links.
Karel
You can try MobileArchiver (mobilearchiving.com) - for me works perfectly and puts all call history in journal every sync.

If the call history is full, I mean 300 items, there is a great chance that the PC app tries to read the calllogdump.csv on the pda while it is already accessed by the pda (it is written) and therefore paralell reading fails.
Solution: backup call log, and after that, delete some 50-100 entries manually. Sync works then nicely...

Another possible solution is to run Smartjournal.exe on pc, it copies the dump exe to Device\Temp, and runs, and this creates the csv. Navigate to this folder (My Device\Temp) and make the csv read only.
Running the pc side returns an error on the PDA, but the log will be read and data transferred.
Now remove read only from csv, move to pc, leave only the last entry, delete all the rest, save, move back to PDA.
Run pc side, all should be good now. You will have a lastsync.txt created in the PC folder of Smartsync. Sync finished.

Mobitnt PocketExport does the job for some days, no errors, I think I keep using this app
