Root RC8 - G1 Android Development

Hey,
I just rooted my RC8 UK G1 using the guide here and then I came here and saw that JF1.43 is out, where the guide I was using used JF1.41.
Should I upgrade? What are the benefits and how do I upgrade?
Also, if a new OTA update comes out can I just update and keep root? If not, can I just update without doing anything special and loose root?
Thank you

JFv1.42 and 1.43 are US only so I believe you need to reflash to use, though I'm not sure. The number structure of US numbers is different (it has dashes in it like xxx-xxxx-xxxx) and they have some extra programs like MyFaves by the sound of it. For now if you want to stick with UK releases, you have the most recent. I contacted TMo about it and all they had to say was that they didn't know when our RC33 equivalent would be out.

T-Mobile UK G1 UPDATES

Hi,
Does anybody know when the updates for T-Mobile UK G1 are coming out?
I've read in this forum that the UK update is not the same as the USA RC29 update
I'm running on TC5-RC7 at the moment, I've still got the option to connect via USB in my preferences so i know that it's not been updated yet as the RC29 update removes this option.
Had the phone for 5 days now and still no sign of any updates.
If i run the RC29 via Micro SD will it mess up my G1 droid?
Thanks

It most likely won't let you update. The update was meant for specific models and I assume it was made so you can't update different versions from other countries.

Stock RC30 to UK TC5 Firmware Update ?

I am on Stock RC30 Firmware got it pushed to my mobiler
Can we Update UK Firmware with Root Access Facility to us.
as UK Firmware have higher Version Series as TC5-RCxx
We may get into that Firmware to we can have root access back then load Moded RC30 or Just Stay with Buggy Root Access firmwate
I'm not sure you'd want the UK firmware I've actually just (well, yesterday) pushed the US firmware onto my UK handset. It's certainly worth a try as a potential downgrader, but be aware that our 3g is slightly different to the US setup that t-mobile use.
I the UK firmware is a full update rather than just a patch like RC30, then shouldn't we be able to us it to downgrade then follow the modified update methoe rc29 to rc30 to restore root to those who already did the official update to rc30?
I was about to ask about the UK rom and how it compares to the US version.....
The version numbers are very far appart and we have had no OTA's yet.

Question about jailbreaking

i got my replacemnt G1 yesterday and it came with RC 29. i want to jailbreak it but i have few questions before doing that.
1) does this void the warranty or anything like that?
2) can you go back to original firmwares??
3) after jailbreaking, can still update your G1 with updates from tmobile??
NEED HELP ASAP, before i get my RC30 update.

1) possibly: it might go unnoticed that the firmware was changed, as long as you dont damage the phone you should be ok.
2) yes - you can undo the modded firmware update process with the official RC29 then apply the official (no root) RC30
3) no - once you apply the modded firmware update, there are mods that prevent you from receiving ota updates. you can probably find the update and apply it via sd card, but you will more than likely lose root....
so if you cannot get the updates from tmobile, is it worth it???

yes its worth it, and you can get the updates, just not over the air, and im sure the members here will be able to mod the official updates as they come out....better to have root while you can than to upgrade to official RC30 and not have a chance, at least for right now, to get root back.

Rooting new Dutch release with build 123099

Try to flash it with the US RC29 or the UK firmware. But I don't think this will work as the SPL will block it.
AFAIK there's no way to get root at the non US/UK/Dev G1 at this time.
Michael
try update using rc30 update.zip file. I think you will install SPL for US region and you can flash back to RC29
Does it work? Because i wanted to buy the German G1 but if I can't root it, I will buy the UK Version.
@n8gk
work root with the US SPL ??
have you try this ??
If you flash a US or UK firmware on a german G1,....
will the Keyboard work correct ? the Layout for Z and Y are different.
Where can I get the RC30 update.zip file
Ther german has also a build 123099.
I didn't try to update, because I don't wanna loose the ability to go back to the original.
Waiting that a original one is out first. (because of language and keyboard)
Not Allowed
I tried to downgrade with rc29 firmware, but it isnt possible...
Checking...
Loading...
Not Allowed...
And then stuck in the bootloader...
I also got my G1 last week and it also has the 123099 Build.(I live in Austria) If there is any way how i can help to root this build (upload it?), let me know.
If i flash an UK or US firmware on my phone (suppose some genius finds a way how to do it) wouldn't it render the "Disable Data-Roaming" function useless, when i travel to one of these countries? And even deactivate the data connection in my home country?
In Austria tmo offers a roaming block on their side so i do not have to use this function on the phone, but i am just curious...
Maybe one of the more experienced users in here could tell us about the chances of rooting such a device.
Are there any or did Google / T-Mobile finally fix the backdoor completely?
Greetings,
Becksman
In device info the build description is:
kila_eu-user 1.1 TMI-RC4 123099
ota-rel-keys,release-keys
And build id:
TMI-RC4
The backdoor has been fixed for some time now... But as long as you were able to revert to an older image you can re-root your device, but we are not able to do this because we would need to use an image with another CID and that is not allowed with the original SPL. But the only way to change SPL is when you have your device rooted...
Correct me if im wrong plz..
So that means bad news for the European G1 owners?
seems so. and because the developers here already got a us-hacked version, they not seem to be interested in hacking this 1.1 firmware the one or other way.
are the european developers to stupid/busy to do it? or are they so clever to get a us one?
in the european firmware 1.1-version the manufacturer has alredy fixed the lame telnetd-root bug and the bootloader. and this is, on what the us-g1-hacks are based on.
i have the hope that some day a local root exploit will apear, which exploits the kernel or another vital component of the g1 to get root without telnetd.
maybe such a kernel exploit will be discovered in the standard linux kernel which can be portet to android; or some great reversing/hacking-debugging-genious-mastermind finds an android exploit all by himself.
android is so new, there MUST be bugs to exploit locally.
Iam a highlevlel-programmer, iam not able to find such local root vulnerabillities.
way to open EU G1
one guy from Czech republic did it

Holy Sh*t with multiple custom firmwares

I'm aware of 4 different brand of "cupcake" firmwares. I don't care which is better... the questions is what does ADP mean, cuz it's being plastering all over on this forums.
It's the developer's version, in laments terms. : )
I don't know what ADP stands for, but it's referring to the name of the firmware put out by HTC for the unbranded version of the G1 known as the Dev phone. All the builds with ADP in the name (JF ADP 1.5 and ADP1.5Hr3) are built off the official release of the firmware called ADP 1.5. Usually ADP builds restrict access to protected apps on the market, but all these custom builds fixed that issue already and can be used on any rooted G1. All you need to know is ADP builds are based off an official release.
thanks for quick reply, I've been speculating over JesusFreke's 1.5 ADP .... I'm debating whetever I should wait for JF's cupcake version of official T-Mo's OTA firmware or go for ADP.
Android Developer Phone =ADP
It was released shortly after the g1 and basically allowed you to not have to sign in to you use it. Not sure if it came rooted or not. It should have if it's a developer phone I'd think.
The Android Developer Phone-1 is a G1 that comes with the engineering second-stage loader and a non-crippled Android 1.0 firmware on it (you could say "rooted firmware", but that's clearly looking at it backwards).
As far as I've been able to discern, once you root a G1 and install a fastboot-capable loader there's no significant difference between what you have and an ADP1. (Except you don't get the cool developer design on the battery cover panel.)
AFIK there is no hardware difference in the ADP1 and G1...

Correct!. you sirs win both win an internet. don't spend it all in one place.
However from what I hear htc limited root on the official adp 1.5 I believe you still have access via adb and thus can reinstate access to the phone, however I recall reading a thread about such a topic... also the adp 1.5 official come bundled with a new recovery image, so becareful after flashing that, you'll lose your ability to do nandroid backups till you reflash a recovery img
