so that's the idea, shouldn't be too hard right? Install puppy (or your live cd of choice) onto the micro SD in the G1. From here boot the laptop from the live USB located on the SD. Is this possible, or does something in the phone prevent it from being seen as a bootable usb device?
Either way, you should end up a sick little linux live micro-sd It can be tiny too, picked up The Kingston Mobility Kit. It works great for older computers that have issues with sdhc cards and works great as a boot device on my older pavillion laptop. The micro sdhc usb adapter is about the size of a long thumbnail!
If all goes better than expected... we'll be able to boot a pc with no drives from just the G1 and a USB cable. Then use the awesome TetherWiFi app to get the driveless pc online!
What do ya think? has this already been tried and failed and a complete waste of time :/ I have no clue what I'm doing, hopefully this sounds fun to someone wiser than I lol
booting computer from G1 already done successfully:

looks easy to realize,

One thing I've found though is that transfer speeds to/from the G1 are bad, it slows the card down dramatically. Best just use a MicroSD stick.
That's one of the best things about the 100mb Puppy live distro. Even from cd, which i believe is far slower than usb, the entire installation takes all of 5 minutes. The OS is actually installed into the laptop RAM. In other words once installed speed is dependent on your computer's ram speed, not the g1's transfer speeds.
I have almost no experience with linux but the gui of puppy is similar to windows so very newb friendly
Edit: Also using this RAM only method, nothing on the hard drives is touched or modified. Making it great for those looking to learn *nix but need to have windows as their primary OS. Just reboot w/o the SD and whalla back in winblows.
So far I have a good live CD working. now to put it on SD. usb boot is being a bit more difficult lol
ok, usb setup was a piece of cake once I tried it in linux(I think it's because the sd ?needed? to be ext3). Now it installs completely off sd and leaves no traces.
Here's an excellent step-by-step for once you have a working Puppy Live CD. Artie's 4.1.1 setup and tips. You should be able use your G1 and usb cable to set the sd up.
I still can't boot from G1 (bios doesn't see it, back to searching lol), For now I have to put the Sd into the mini usb reader. Besides that everything works great.
I also partitioned my 4g sd into 2 drives, one for storage one for puppy.

Hey guys!
Last friday, I finally got my Toshiba TG01, which came with a 8GB Class 4 microSDHC card.
I didn't put it in my phone, since there's a virus on some of these cards!
Now I want to format the card with my Windows XP computer, but when I try to access it with a SD card adapter, it freezes my Explorer...
It gets stuck until I put the card out of it!
I also tried a USB adapter on my Vista PC and it only tells me this:
"Please insert a disk into Removable Disk ( H: )."
Same thing on the XP PC.
Can anyone help me?
sounds like a defect microSD card
Try disabling the autostart feature and then use the Panasonic SD formatting software.
yip know the feeling, the cheap card that came with my HD does the same, although it still works perfectly with my device and is accessable using a/sync.
Going to buy a good make class 6
well id put it in the phone then put the phone into the pc and make it a usb mass storage device
then if it can be seen then awesome format it
the card wont have any affect of the phone its it plugged into the pc as a mass storage device as the phone cant se it
Try reformatting the card, to fat32 using hp's low level format tool it worked for me.
my card is fat32, pc using xp pro still wont recognise it using card reader, although all is fine in disk drive and active sync......no real biggy....
it may be a defective reader
Hi all, just wanted to add something to this, as I have a TG01, and have had a few issues with memory cards with it. This is something I poseted on http://www.modaco.com/content/toshi...5/strange-files-appearing-on-my-storage-card/
"Hi folks, just thought I would update you with a few issues I'v had re the memory cards. I've used the ones supplied by Toshiba, (not the best) but also a Sandisk 16GB and 8GB, and both suffered corruption issues. It took about a hour to copy most of the files over to my laptop, and to do that, I had to put the mem card in my Touch Pro! I'm not sure what this means, as some people have said they have had no issues. It would be interesting to see what proportion of us actually suffer from memory card corruption using other brands! Looks like I may have to carry a backup of my mem card for a while!!... "
I'm not the only the only one with issues, as a few others on that forum have had them too. Wish i knew what was causing it. May have to go back to the old reliable Touch Pro untill we get the promised upgrades?..
Lets hope not.........
nope its not the reader, bought a new one last week as i thought it may have been that. Im sures its something to do with micro sdhc cards and just being made baldy.... cheap is nto always good huh...............
mm thought id add a poll to the thread, would be interesting to see whats the worst offender.......
Let me know if your brands not there, ill add it
Hi, have you already tried this??
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...g-folder-or-corrupt-in-windows-mobile-device/
Ok, been fighting with my G1 phone for over a month.
First it was the phone shutting down because the battery life was a whopping 5mins of any use. That was killing the OS, so kept having to reinstall.
Now that I got a replacement battery, it seems that something is causing my 8GB MicroSD card to stay 'read only' when I plug it into my usb-flash reader on my Ubuntu system.
I severely need to reformat my whole phone and start fresh but seem to be kinda screwed at the moment because of this damn card issue.
I have scoured the web and it seems this is some sort of stupidly common problem and I am just stunned at the sheer lack of solutions that work.
So, I am hoping that someone here can help and direct me to have a decent phone once again and not feel totally worthless and ashamed when I tell people I am a tech but can't fix my own damn phone.....
30 year-old trick does that job!

This is just a guess, but I remember back when I was using linux (Gentoo or Ubuntu I think) FAT32 partitions were mounted read only, it was a limitation of the OS. I remember the documentation saying it was possible to mount it read/write but strongly discouraged.
This was a long time ago though, and to be honest I'm not sure if it was a FAT32 or NTFS partition that I had that problem with.
That's NTFS. Hasn't been any problem writing to FAT32 in a looooooooooong time. Also it has been safe to write to NTFS for some years now.
Are you using a MicroSD to SD adapter? There's a little switch on all SD cards making them read-only. Flip it and you should be good to go.
EDIT: Just saw you just noticed it
Actually wasn't a switch. A poorly designed adapter that broke at some point where the 'switch' is supposed to be. Cheap plastic.
Hey guys,
When I plug in a USB Hard drive into my TF101, the "Preparing" message flashes for about half a second then disappears and I seem to have no way of accessing the hard drive.
USB memory sticks work fine though, I've tried 2 different hard drives, one portable, one external with it plugged into the wall, when I tried the portable I plugged the secondary hard drive usb connection into my laptop just to make sure there was enough power.
The hard drives do spin up though, any thoughts?
I'm using the newest Revolver ROM
Many thanks.
Restart your TF.
Microsoft windows has been around for over 20 years. Android for tablets have been around for about 6 months. If you want a perfect system, go get an ipad.
I think your tampon needs changing.
But hey! thanks for the tip!
and thanks for the condescension, you must be so proud.
clap clap.
Other than this problem I'm loving my tab, loving Android as well, it's not a huge issue, guess I'll just have to change roms.
I'd never get an iProduct, they're glorified, trendy, expensive and not very functional when compared to Android.
i dont know but i dont think my western digitial harddrive works with my transformer ever. it never worked and i figured that the tablet didnt output enough voltage for it. just my thought, im probably wrong if anyone out there is more knowledgeable than me.
I have a wd 1tb USB hard drive and works flawlessly with my current rom

Some stock versions can't read ntfs. Reformat to fat32. Or get the ipad.
Ahhh, that may explain why I couldn't access the music, photos and videos on my media drive (a 500 GB HDD that I took out of a laptop that crashed).
I thought it was the size of the drive (>64 GB)
With the ntfs issue, I am currently baffled. Some people have sworn that they got non-rooted stock and could read ntfs just fine. And some people have sworn that they got non-rooted stock and they can't read ntfs but when they reformatted to fat32 they could read them.
I've asked this many times and can't get a unified answer whether the stock can raed ntfs or not. For now, just assume yours can't and so you will have to reformat to fat32 in order to use it with your TF.
Why is it such a problem moving large files, such as roms, to the sd card from a pc thru usb. It will stop and say something about camera has stopped. I had to put my sd card in the wifes HTC tb to put the rom on the card and put it back in the SG3 to install a rom. Am I missing something?
Thanks, Mike
I have this issue too and hate it big time.
I have to move 200-300mb at a time now.
Moving more is like never gonna happen. Wish they'd fix this. Hate to have to buy a micro sd OTG USB adapter just to move files around.
Try different cables. I am constantly moving large files around with no issues. In fact it's faster than moving files from my hard drives on my cpu. 1gig from sd to cpu takes less than 30 seconds. Faster from external sd/running sd speed boost.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises
Tried several, tried the one that came with the SG3, tried the one that came with the HTC TB, Tried a motorola. All with same result. Moving files off sd is no issue, just moving files onto sd from pc is problematic. Few songs at a time is no issue, but a ROM is not going to happen. Gets all the way done then states camera has stopped and will not go. I keep thinking I must have an option ticked incorrectly somewhere in the phone, but if it is, I can't find it.
Mike
Your in mtp mode, not camera mode correct? Loading onto sd is good for me, 800mb rom's load on I'm less than a min. Weird.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises
Actuall no I was in (PTP) camera mode. I just saw move any files. That must be the issue. I saw the MPT and thought it was just for syncing audio and such. Will try when I get off work. Thats probably the problem I was looking for, Thanks.
Mike
I have the exact same problem (one I've never had with any other phone)
I was trying to copy blue-ray rips to my 64 gig sandisk card while the card was in the phone. I am using a brand new straight from the package cable that came with my second G3 (I have 2 phones). It starts to copy just fine, but quits 1/2 way thru & stops responding. every single time.
This is a brand new I7 PC that I just built a few weeks ago running Windows Seven Pro with 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM.
If I use a universal reader (even thru a USB HUB) the files copy just fine either from any of the three 2 terrabyte secondary hard drives or from the solid state boot drive to the card.

More than likely its as annoyingduck said, try mtp mode not ptp(camera). I think ptp is just optimized to do a 'camera' sync onto your computer. (for windows users, that annoying dialog box that pops up asking if you want to sync video, pictures, make a dvd, etc...)
I didn't realize I had the same problem as well. Awhile ago, I noticed that my data transfers would time out and I've only ever used camera mode. Thanks for the tip!

You could also give Airdroid a shot. It works over wifi so it's just a touch slower than the USB cable, but it's super solid and is wireless too!
No mention of manufacturer, class or capacity of sdcard?
Makes a huge difference.
Also make sure to be using an OEM usb cable from a major manufacturer. Knock off or cheapy dollar store cables just don't cut it for charging, let alone transfer...

I actually find it a shade faster than my pitiful USB 2.0 ports.
Takes about 5-10 minutes to xfer 700mb files on Airdroid. I think anyways, I'm guestimating from about 10 hours ago when I xferred a 700mb file. I wasn't on top of it but I'm pretty sure it finished closer to the 5 minute mark...
That fixed it, switched mode and tranfered a rom. First time it timed out, tried again and it went through fine. Was using the OEM cable with a 32 gb sd, not sure of class. I know its not a 10. Will take a look at Airdroid, thanks for that tip.
Thanks, Mike
I like using samba wireless. It's free but requires root.

Sandisk (junk, I've had three burn up) class 10
I can take the card & stick it in my Rezounds & it loads fine, put it back in the G3 & nothing but problems so I gave up and use a card reader.
Hi all,
I created a recovery USB on my Surface Pro from within windows.
It didn't give any errors.
When I try to boot into the recovery USB I get this error.
I tried another USB stick (both of them were 16GB) and get the same error when trying to boot into it.
Any ideas on what I should do to fix this?
Is there a problem with my recovery partition on the Surface Pro?
Should I try to run the recovery from the SSD?
Thanks,
Rich
Just as an update in case anyone else is having this problem.
The solution to this problem was to remove the microSD card when booting from the recovery USB. Both previously created USB recoveries work fine now.
Does this by any chance means that"We can use the MicroSD as a Boot device? I suppose that since the BIOS is redirecting the boot sequence to the MicroSD, that this means it can be used to Boot the surface.
If this proved to work, then I just don't have enough words to represent my happiness.
Imagine that you can create a recovery MicroSD - or Put Live Ubuntu Image that you can use to get access to your SSD contents in case of Blown up OS - and toss it around in an Full size SD Adapter to save it in a Memory card wallet or something, and use it whenever you need, That would be awesome.
Can you please look into it?
When you create the recovery drive it gives you the option of selecting the usb or micro sd, so I guess it would work.
USB is much cheaper though. I bought one of the metal hp ones that is the same size as the usb slot and about 10mm long.
I keep it in my case and it won't crack like an sd card might.
There are a few sites that say you can boot into ubuntu from either usb or micro sd.
I don't want to erase my 64gb sd to test it though...

Thanks for the info, I'm thrilled to know this Many awesome scenarios are spinning my head now.
Being able to boot from an SD is not a rare feature. My 5 year old dell inspiron is very happy to boot from SD, or it was until the card reader died.
In general you can treat a bootable SD identically to a bootable USB. Will work in the same way usually.
Its quite logical to assume that SD was higher up the boot order than USB in this case.

Well, That's funny to know, My Sony Vaio SVZ (2013) i7 Quad-core/256GB Raid-0 SSD/4G can't boot off niether the Sony Memory Stick, nor the SD card. So its a matter of a BIOS support I hear you sayin'
I owned top of the line laptops since laptops introduction, but non supported that feature, which I find really useful. Think, Recovery/Ubuntu/Live editions of XP/Vista/7, Live Antivirus ISOs, Live Network ISOs, and list goes on and on. Neat to have I must say!
Tried with linux mint this morning, all 3 netbooks in the house were fine to boot from SD.
Did have to change bios boot order on all 3 though (mass storage was at bottom)
