Disable Start Menu? - General Questions and Answers

hello, i would like to know if there is a hack or registry tweak that would disable the start menu? with all the full filled interfaces available, i dont need it anymore. can anyone point me to the right direction?

do you want to disable the menu itself or to hide it?
there is no point in actually disabling it.

Re:
Find the window to get the handle using Findwindow and make it disable using api ( like on window mobile EnableWindow(hwnd, FALSE)...
i think the same approach is on every OS .

hide it actually, what i actually want is so that when i press the start button, nothing happens. or at least prevent the menu from appearing.

hehe. i must be missing something here.
you want to see the Start button... that is.. you want the taskbar to be visible.. but you want to click start, and that nothing will happen.
i fail to see why.
I can tell you how to hide the taskbar with the start button so that you get extra screen space if you don't need that part..
but why would you disable the start button? just trying to understand.

Don't press it?
And assign the hardware key to something else, assuming you have it.

I hope this helps Startbar Toggle by me.

with does power off equal hide all apps

I'd really like to be able to put my device to sleep, without having to background whatever app I'm using.
It's very strange. I don't think I've seen another phone that doesn't have a separate power button, from the exit this app button.
Any ideas?
Hmm.
No one has any idea?
I know that riddled throughout this board there are probably a half a dozen apps to turn off your phone, and activate the keylock. Does anyone have any suggestions for some good ones, that I could then assign to the "hold and run" button on the left of the Treo?
Ones that work with WM6?
I'm really surprised that other people don't even seem to want or care about this. The only real advantage of WM6 over PalmOS .. to me... are things like multitasking.
What good is a phone that won't let you keep an app on the screen? Why would I want to constantly have to bring apps to the front again and again and again? I want to be able to turn off my phone, turn it on.. make an entry in an app, and turn it off again, all without opening and closing the app.
Gee.. how strange!
WM devices are 'Today' screen based, hence it automatically switch back to Today screen after a set period of time. You can't change this 'habbit', but you can prolong the period of time.
Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Today -> Items -> Today timeout

This has nothing to do with what I'm asking about, but it is helpful info. However, my today option has the ability to turn off the today timeout altogether. Perhaps it is WM6 based?
Regardless, I'm talking.. again.. about the screen off button of the treo.. that is also the exit button, that is also the end call button.

Lets quote what you have said above. "What good is a phone that won't let you keep an app on the screen? Why would I want to constantly have to bring apps to the front again and again and again? I want to be able to turn off my phone, turn it on.. make an entry in an app, and turn it off again, all without opening and closing the app."
If you turn off the timeout, the last app will stay when you switch off your phone (e.g. the Today will not appear and sending your app background).
If this REALLY doesnt have NOTHING to do with what you are asking for, I surrender and good luck on your quest.

I had two separate posts above, and of course they are related in this thread. Context, my man. My first post clearly talks about how my issue is with the power button, and how my issue has to do with the power button forcing you back to the today screen before it will let you power off the unit.
Fair enough, you missed my first post, and only read my second post in this same thread. No harm done.
I am also mystified why the power button constantly forces screen back to Home....I would think this is a real pain for most people??
Any fixes/hacks?
TIA
To do what you want, there's an usefull application: AE Button Plus (http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php) This small applicacion allows you to remap buttons. To switch off the screen what I've done is assign the action "switch off device"

I tried AEBP but this only seems to "Switch Display On/Off" during a phone call, NOT when in an application.
I don't see a "Switch Off Device" option. Did I miss something?

I found "Power off" (I think it was called that) in the list of options to assign to a button. I assigned it to "hold side button", one click. My device now shuts off when I hold that button in.
Thanks to the dude that suggested this! Now to see how it affects my device...

Could the lack of a dedicated windows hardware button be a deal-breaker

Hi.
I notice the Touch-Cruise lacks the Windows button that activates the start menu (like on the HTC Trinity).
Does this mean you have to use the stylus every time you want to open the start menu and go down to programs.
If so that would suck wouldn't it?
Or is there some other way of activating the start menu without the stylus?
Otherwise this device ticks all the boxes for me.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

You can map any hardware button you like to it. I use the one below the green button.

How do you do that.
(Sorry if this sounds like a basic question but I don't actually have the device at the moment. I'm seriously thinking of getting it though )
Also how do you like the device overall?

Cheers.
Strangely enough when you go into settings>buttons on my Trinity there's no option to change the buttons below the screen.
You can only reassign the buttons on the sides of the device.
But with the Touch-Cruise you're positive you can re-assign the buttons BELOW the screen, right?
Thanks.

lock tweak

I am looking for a lock feature that locks the phone simply when you depress the power button. I have come accross all sorts of fancy ways of locking the phone, but not this.
Can someone please point me to this tweak (if it is indeed available)
Try the Advanced Settings of Sensorlock.
Ther is a option in AdvancedConfig, to do exaxtly that

ok - installed. seems to be what I want. Thanks!
If I don't want to enable that feature in Advanced Configuration tool, is there another way to get to it? Or is there a Cab/App That I can use to lock unlock my phone? I like that ACT lets you lock the screen by pushine the power button, but sometime I just want to turn off the screen not lock it,,,

I can't seem to find this option in Advanced Config 3.3 either.
I'm sure it's probably a well known tip but I only just found it out (Got my Touch Pro yesterday) that you can hold the call end key to lock the device, which is better than nothing but I'd still rather have a way of making the power button do this too.

Ok, another question on the topic is there a way to add a lock button to the touchflo homepage?
Full Lock???
I have this thing that is bothering me.
When I have my Fuze on my belt ( screen locked using S2U2 ) and I activate Voice Command to make a call or just answer a call using my BT Headset the phone menu will come on with a big end call button in the middle.
Without fail I would move around and nudge the phone with the right force through the case and hang up on whoever I was talking to.
Is there an option in the S2U2 or another way of locking the phone so that when the screen is locked it's really locked?
thanks!
I reflashed and now can't get my device to lock when I press the power button. The device won't lock at all, even when I hold the end key.
How did you get it to lock when you press the power button?

Disable Soft Capacitive Buttons

Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

[Q] Can't add apps to home screen

Adding apps to the home screen should be simple:
"To add app shortcuts to the Gear's home screen, go to Apps on the Gear, tap and hold an app icon, then drag and drop it on the home icon at the top of the screen."
This doesn't work for me. I tap and hold and nothing happens. I've had no problem removing apps from the home screen through settings > edit home screen. But I cannot add.
Any suggestions?
Anyone else have this issue?

When you do a long press, nothing happens? The app should "pop up" and move with your finger just like when you drag and drop on your phone. Then drop it onto the home button at the top that appears, and you can then rearrange all the apps on the home screens.

If its the same for home pages where you can't rearrange stuff, try wiping the device? If that doesn't work, you might have a defective digitizer touchscreen.

Yes its the same. I can go into settings > display > edit home page and I can long press to move and remove icons there. So I would assume that means the touchscreen itself is fine. But I cannot add through those settings.
Wiping the device is my next move after asking on here (but I'm holding off on that for now). And after that I'll be calling the Samsung shop where I bought it.

OK so I wiped it, without restoring. Noticed straight away that below the "edit home page" option in settings, I now have a "manage apps" option which lets me do what I need. Where was it before? Who knows!
According to the help FAQs I should still be able to move icons/apps without going into settings. I still can't do that. Is it correct that I should be able to?

I don't have the same issue you do. But I also don't have "manage apps" under the "edit home page". Are you seeing this under "display" in your settings on the watch itself? Someone else has the option in GM to send an emergency message like the pebble. They are running the same sowtware number of GM that I am yet that option is not on mine. I don't understand how so many of the same watches with the same software can be so different.

It seems the emergency assistance option has to do with what phone/rom you are running. The option is not there on stock T-mobile Note 3, but if you put the international rom on it, it does.
