How-to Train your Dragon[Battery]

To help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly:
1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, I tested this on my pops evo and my epic...MAJOR DIFFERENCE
After installing a new Kernel it is recommended tat you recalibrate our battery to get the most life out of your battery. I suggest using Phoenix kernel but your a grown man[or woman] choose your kernel

My god. I was highly skeptical of this but I tried a quick version of the instructions.
I did the following:
1. Charge to 100% while phone = ON
2. Once at 100%, unplug charger and turn phone OFF
3. Plug in charger for 5 minutes while phone = OFF
4. Unplug charger and turn phone ON
5. Leave phone ON for 5 minutes
6. Plug in charger for 5 minutes while phone = OFF
and the results... are miraculous. I'm running Phoenix Kernel v.1.43 and stock rom w/ drm removed.

Trick trick trick trickle charge Battery is in fast charge mode when it begins charging from a certain percentage (although slow). When the charge is in the 90's and you unplug and plug it back in it trickle charges to completion. This does indeed work. Works best in my opinion when you do this after you let the battery completely drain, plug in, recovery mode, wipe battery stats and then turn on.
And then do what you stated above.

i also reccomend an external battery charger that u place the battery into. no need for the trick. Ive used this trick before i got the external charger and yes it does work very well!

+1 on the ext charger. I have two batt. If I charge with the phone... one- goes from 100 to 97 withing sec from when I unplug it and two- it doesn't last as long. Using the charge and switching out the batts. Stays at 100 for a while and it will last forever too.

I noticed this as well, so when my indicator LED turns blue and it says 100%, I unplug, then immediately plug back in until blue.. lather rinse repeat.. after about 3 or 4 times it finally stays at 100% when unplugged..
That being said, I'm gonna have to try to find an external charger and another battery...

My local sprint store sells a charger with extra battery for $49.99. Its an external charger that fits in your pocket. With charging cord of course.

tried this, doesnt' seem to work for me. I unplugged, turned phone off, and charged, but phone said fully charged after like 15 minutes, I assume once it says 100% on the green battery that shows up when phone is off that I shouldn't just let it sit there? its not charging at that point anymore is it?
then i unplugged, turned on phone, waited 2 minutes, turned off, charged again, 15 minutes or so it was fully charged again.

This reminds me of the chargobics that some ppl did on their evo to get better battery life....never really helped me.

So what you're suggesting (re: recovery/battery stats) is the following:
1. use the phone until the battery completely dies.
2. plug the phone in
3. boot into recovery (clockwork ?)
4. wipe battery stats
5. turn the phone on
6. do the 'plug me in' dance after it's fully charged
What if the battery is fully charged and you wipe the battery stats ?

idk i think i used to do something similar on my Hero and even back on my (WinMo) Mogul and Touch Pro and never really got much out of it......
However, today I did this and I swear I'm getting great battery life today. Have never gotten past 12 hours and I'm currently sitting at about 40% left at 12 hours. Could be the placebo effect but we'll see..... even played some angry birds today.

Took 11 days to get here, but worth EVERY penny. I never need to worry about to battery life anymore. Hell, now that I charge my batteries using the external charger, I get atleast 8-10 hours with constant use, and my battery doesn't drop from 100 right away. I never get to the 3rd battery by the end of the day and thats with a 18 hour day unplugged. Worth it.

I have noticed some weirdness with the battery. I looked at the juiceplotter graph after the battery had been left charging all night, and it would charge to 100 and then over th course of half an hour drop down to 95% or so and then recharge up to 100 over and over and over again. I have taken it off the charger sometimes and the battery has gone from 100% to 96 % within a couple minutes and other times it stays at 100% for over an hour. It was a matter of luck as to when I pulled my phone off I guess, when it was really at 100% or really at 95-97% or anywhere inbetween.
Gonna try this PITA method of charging. Hope it works, but damn is it inconvenient.

The external battery charger is the way to go. i have also noticed when i rarely charge from the phone that it sometimes wont stay at 100 but for a minute then drop to 97. i get 55 hours to one battery with moderate usage.

I'm on Latest Epic Experience with Mixup Kernel. And I don't have OC widget or Setcpu.

Try running the same setup with phoenix 1.43 kernel. Still super snappy and way better battery then mix up.
I'm also using external charger, 30+hrs with screen on for 6hrs

Is it really that much better? If so, what causes it to be better on battery life? I am getting great battery life using the mixup kernel because I have juicedefender and setcpu working hard to conserve battery life. Would Phoenix make a difference?

Just a FYI, Lithium-Ion batteries don't hold a memory like NiCad batteries did. It is also NOT good to drain them all the way down.

Do I have to wipe anything?

[Q] Battery Performance after Upgrade

I have 2 mesmerize phones and applied the official uscc ec10 update to both of them yesterday. One device's battery performance since the upgrade has been horrible. It will go down 20% the first 30 minutes and only get about 15hours of use before the battery is completely dead. 88% is display. The other mesmerize is healthy and usually has cell standby as the top battery use. Neither phone is rooted at the moment but it is not out of the question. This was not an issue until the update. Does anyone have some suggestions to try and resolve this issue?

I had a similar issue. My phone was using 10%/hour.
However I'm using the EC10 that is available thru this site.
I ended up re-flashing to correct my issue.
Not sure if we can re-flash the stock release from uscc.
Also you may want to disable wifi, and gps. Those tend to be battery intensive.

Make sure you have the right usb drivers for your windows O.S. so that ODIN can properly
communicate with your phone.

You can flash the stock release from us cellular, if you already installed the leaked ec10 if you flash the stock 2.1 files from the forums here with Odin first. And obviously you disable voodoo if you have it enabled.

drain the phone to as far as it will go and then shut off.
leave it powered off and plug the phone into a computer usb port NOT the wall charger.
let the phone charge up until it says its full.
unplug it for 30 seconds.
plug it back in and charge it til it says full
unplug it for 30 seconds.
plug it back in until it says its full.
do this 4-5 times.
power on the phone.
charge it until the phone says charged.
unplug it for 30 seconds.
charge it again.
do this 2-3 times.
(alternately if you rooted and installed clockwork recovery just wipe battery stats, and use the regenerate recharge method i just mentioned)
come back and let us know if your battery life is different.
after you do this once ALWAYS drain the battery to 10-20% before you plug it in.
charging the phone too soon can damage the battery.
battery makers, and the industry as a whole claim that these batteries have no memory, and i can tell you for 100% fact that if you charge your phone like some drunken lunatic the battery will suffer for it.
what you are doing is forcing the battery to relearn what full battery charge is.
using the wall charger is the worst kind of charge you can use on your phone.
it is ONLY meant for a quick boost charge and is harmful to your battery if used as your only charge source.
the batteries in cell phones now days are best charged with what is known as a "trickle charge".
wall chargers are typically 1amp, and charge the batteries too quickly.
anything over 500ma (a USB 2.0 port) i have found to be an unreliable and piss poor charge.
anyone who disagrees should stop and learn a thing or two about batteries and proper charge methods.

Not to mention judging battery life 24 hours after installing a new OS is a moot point. Give it a few days people, then start judging. When the undervolted kernel is released, we will have no battery issues like back in 2.1 anyway.

yup 100% agreed, anytime you flash a new rom it will completely jack with your battery stats.
that is why you need to wipe battery stats anytime you flash a new rom.

[HOW-TO] - Battery Calibration

There has been much confusion and frustration surrounding our battery life and these custom roms. Some of us have great battery while others are having horrid problems.
I am writing this guide in the hopes it will help all of you with problems getting that great battery life.
This is a guide written from my own experience and technical understanding.
First, Your phone should drain, on average, 1% per hour or less while in standby mode (screen off). If you are not getting this average, you need to calibrate your battery.
ALWAYS flash a new rom with your phone at 100% battery - no exceptions!
i know some guides say to run battery down to 2% and then charge, but i never had much luck with this.
1) Before you flash your rom, charge your battery to 100% with the phone ON.
2) Once it says fully charged, turn the phone off and plug it in and wait for the on screen display to say 100% (this will take 5 to 10 min)
3) Turn the phone back on, and plug it in and charge till it says 100%
4) turn off the phone and charge again while off until the on screen battery indicator says 100% (again this will take 5 to 10 min)
5) repeat steps 1 thru 4 as many times as you feel comfortable, I recommend at least twice (I do it 3 times)
6) when you are satisfied with the charge, and the phone is still OFF with the indicator saying 100%, unplug the phone, remove the battery, and place the phone in download mode (hold vol down and plug into the PC)
7) flash your package (this is done in odin with the battery removed)
8) The first boot after the flash needs to be into Clockwork Recovery, wipe battery stats at this time (most roms will boot into recovery automatically, if not, boot into recovery manually)
9) after you have wiped your battery stats, wipe cache and other data (if the rom you are flashing requires this, if not, skip this step)
10) Boot the rom to the homescreen.
11) from this point on, you will use your phone like normal until the phone completely shuts off. this SHOULD take a while. you should see improved battery life during this stage. If not, dont panic, just run the battery down until the phone shuts off
12) once the phone shuts off (try to time this to happen at bedtime) plug the phone in and allow it to charge in the OFF position
13) once it is at 100% again, use the phone like normal and enjoy your new battery life.
IF YOU ARE DOING THIS WHILE NOT FLASHING A NEW ROM
Do steps 1-4 as many times as needed, I recommend at least twice, i do this 3 times
on the last charge up (your phone should be off while charging during this step) unplug the phone and boot directly into recovery and wipe battery stats. then proceed with the rest of the guide.
TO TEST THIS
charge to phone to 100%, try not to mess with it for an hour or so.. (light usage at most) you should still be at 100% or 99% after an hour. If you are at 95% or below, then the calibration has failed. (unless you have been using the phone or are in a very low to no signal area).
this calibration method is crucial to good battery life. Before I started doing this i was getting very bad battery life. Click on my username and look at my previous posts.. you will read about me *****ing badly about my battery, this is what I did and it has worked amazingly well.

I think this has worked quite well. I flashed Humble 1.2 (at 40% battery) last night, charged up, then started this procedure. After I got done, I took it off the charger and after 15 minutes of trying a new game, listening to a minute of music, and checking various things, I was still at 100%. i left it off, went to bed with wi-fi on, and woke up at 95%. Awesome. My all-day phone is back.

What happens after the calibration process? do i have to do this everytime i charge my battery or does like normal mean i can just leave it charge whenever. Also with what frequency should i be doing this? once a month calibration?

Just did this... 1 hour 15 mins. and still at 100% Sent two text messages out and played Words with Friends for a minute. Thanks!

Did this and it didn't work advice on what I am doing wrong I did the bump charge 2 times ran the phone down 100% and am now looking at 88 percent of next to no use after about an hour and a half of having the phone on.

I am in the same boat with you.....I'll just have to accept the fact that I will have to charge every 6 hours, which was a 2 hour step up from the TB.

This works, going on 17 hours and still at 65%.

What I am curious to know is what is usage like for the people that this worked for. Don't get me wrong I'm not doubting the op but I am a pretty heavy user and even so I'm not really experiencing this awesome battery life everyone talks about when I'm not using it heavily

For all of you that are getting the great life, what percentage does it list for display? This is under settings > about phone > battery use.

I'll have to try this method. My battery life is actually worse now after I tried doing the drain to 2% method. I'll report back with my observations.

Are we talking 3G or 4G here?
I would find it useful when people are talking about how good (or bad) their battery life is to know if they are in a 4G area and have 4G turned on, or are they using 3G only?
Trying to figure out how bad a hit 4G takes on my phone...

So I tried this out yesterday...I don't have a rooted phone so I could not wipe battery stats (does anyone know how to do this without rooting your phone?)...but I did follow steps 1-4 three times and I have gone 23 hours on my charge without having to plug it in. I am in a 4g area and had 4g and background services on for the full 23 hours. Had bluetooth, GPS, and wifi turned off. I sent a couple texts, used whatsapp to send texts, used google voice to send texts, made 3 phone calls (about 4 to 5 min each) played angry birds for about 20 min, played words with friends for 10 min, surfed the web on and off, was on tapatalk and browsing forums for about 20 min and I installed a new keyboard and web browser on my phone in those 23 hours.

I am very curious to know if this will improve battery life after that first initial bump charge.
If you do a regular charge after depleting the charge, do you still see improved battery life?

I'll try another battery... but I've already been through too many DC's and I'm not returning this one. I have no issues with it at all, just this battery problem.

Yes. The phone will pull the necessary power for download mode and the Odin flash from the USB port. Just be sure to use a primary USB port (usually the ones on the back of the computer), rather than a hub, as the hub tends to cause problems.

Odd battery %tage display and behaviour

I posted this in another forum and the response I got was somewhat weak. Instead of re typing everything I will cut and paste my posts and hopefully you guys can guide me in the right direction!

I just bought a Rooted Nexus S from ebay. It is running this ROM Nexus S ICS 4.0.4 stock OTA ROM (IMM76D)
Now, I know nothing about android, I'm coming off a series of old turd phones because i'm always breaking them. I'll probably break this one too, but hopefully not for a while.
When I got the phone I put the battery in and turned it on, then charged it overnight. It will only charge to 54% and stay there. I talked to the seller he said it charged normally for him. He said he did a complete wipe and USB wipe before he shipped it.
The battery seems to drain normally (I guess, I have nothing to really compare it to) from 54% but it would be nice to have it charge to the 90% -ish range haha. I allowed the battery to drain to 40% and put it back on charge, it been on charge for almost an hour and will only charge to 41%? Do you guys have any ideas what I can do to fix this? Is this a sign it needs a new battery, or a software glitch? The seller said the battery shouldn't need replacing.
Also in the battery app under setting, Android System is using 28% is that a lot?
My last question is an important one to me haha. Is there anyway to convert the querty keyboard to a T9? I 've gotten used to texting with one hand and T9 makes it so much easier to do so.

Someone recommended I try the battery calibration app So I did!

Ok, I ran the Battery Calibration app. I let my phone charge for hours. It would only charge up to 38% this time. However, the percentage was 38% but it was charged to 3810 mV (and would not charge past this point). And full charge is approximately 4200 mV according to the Battery Calibration app. So I assumed that 3810 mV was my current battery's max charge (keep in mind it is a couple months old) and set battery calibration at that point.
This is from the app description --> It's suggested, but not necessary, to let the phone fully discharge after calibration, then charged to 100% without break.
So thats what I'll do. I should mention that even though I ran the battery calibration, the battery percentage has been draining from 38%. In other words, my phone now reads 26% battery charge, but is at 3758 mV.
I'm thinking that when I go to charge it after fully draining the battery, it will hopefully charge close to 100%. It seems as though the percentage is the only thing that is off. Because the mV reading seems accurate.

The app says to let the phone fully discharge after calibration. I am now at 15%, but mV is at 3658. Should I recharge when the percentage has dropped lower, or when the mV reaches a low point? Are these phones really this finicky. I'm starting to miss my old 2007 flip phone haha
It's now at 14% and now asking for me to plug it in to charge lol but mV is still way high (3655)

update, charge % reached 0 and the phone shut down. Now charging, Current charge is at 0%, 3595 mV. No one has any idea whats up?
Shouldn't mV be near 0 when charge is at 0%, and be near 4000mV when charge is near 100%?

hopefully you guys can help me fix this issue. Otherwise it'll have to go back to 'ol reliable, the 2007, multiple cracked screen, nokia slider lol It's not pretty, but it works!

There is a built in safety feature in our batteries to prevent deep discharges. IIRC, the safe cutoff point is around maybe 34xx mV. I could be off, but its to prevent damage to the battery. Here's more on them

As for voltages, a full battery should be around 4100mV. Mine tops out around 4196. I'm not too familiar with all of it though. Most of the stuff I learn is through observation and links others provide.

Its hard to say while its charging. My phone is at 4000mv around 70% so I don't really know exactly how it works. But a full battery should read around the voltages I posted. There's people on here who know more about it, so hopefully they'll chime in.
But yes. When its close to zero, it should be around that range. It will differ from battery to battery.

Ah k thanks! My original problem was that the phone would only charge to 54% and would not go past that point. I'm waiting to see if it will get into the 90 ish % range after running the battery calibration now.

The app itself doesn't actually do anything. The stats will get reset once the charge reaches 90% My girlfriend's phone was the same way. It wouldn't charge past 75%. I let the phone run dead and charged it while it was off and it fixed the problem. If it doesn't go to 90%, try charging while off and just letting it run until it gives the warning to charge, turn it off and let it charge overnight .

Ok. Well I let the phone run dead earlier today as I mentioned in one of the above posts. But I didn't charge it with the phone off. I put it on charge with the phone on, and now it won't charge past 11%
It just seems to be getting worse and worse? It's been going between 10% and 11% and has been at 11% for about 2 hours now. Maybe this time I will drain it again and try charging it with the phone off like you suggested.

All else fails grab another battery. They're dirt cheap on eBay. Just get one from a reputable seller

Ok, so I let the battery drain. then fully charged it with the phone off. When I turned it on, it had 47% charge.
The guy I bought it from said that before I buy a battery I should download an app called rom manager and download a new rom. he thinks its a software bug because he had no problems with the battery when he was running cyanogen mod 9 on it.
I wouldn't mind giving trying this, except I don't even know what a rom is. Is it operating system? I like the way the phone works now, If only I could get it to charge fully.

Ok, I just did a bunch of reading and downloaded ROM manager premium. Hopefully I get this figured out. Owning one of these phones is a lot of work

lts pretty much a pocket computer. Coming from an older type of phone, a lot of things are going to be different. Gotta start somewhere. Reading up on it and toying around with the phone will help in the long run. Trust me.

Haha, pretty much. I'm slowly starting to learn more. I didn't think there was this much of a learning curve, thats what took me by surprise thats all. I'm a fast learner so I'm not too worried. I didn't have time to play around on it tonight, maybe on the weekend. I found out I could use it without the sim card which is awesome! Because now I can use old faithful while I learn more about android.

Haha. Yep. You can have tons of fun just using it over wifi!

Do keep in mind, fully dishcharging a lithium ion (li-ion) battery deteriorates the battery even more. We only discharge because older phones use nickel cadmium batteries which need more maintenance to get to their maximum life span and use.

Battery calibration just wipes your battery stats. You can do this by going into any recovery program eg clockworkmod receovery or team win recovery project. You can wipe the battery stats yourself. If that still doesnt work. Try doing a clean install of your custom rom or kernel. If your not on a custom rom or kernel. Nor your rooted. Try formating the SD card in the Nexus S (or fully wiping the sd card). Than do a factory reset.

Ok, so I finally had some time to learn to flash etc. After backing up, I downloaded and flashed the same rom from SD, I cleared davlik cache and also selected the wipe data and cache option from ROM Manager (I assume that this is what is called a clean install?)
This is the ROM I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653713 Slightly customized stock ROM, rooted.
After start up I waited a while and then plugged it into the charger, it only charges to 54% still. Sometimes it creeps up. One thing I noticed is that if I use the phone while it is charging, it actually drains the battery. So it will go from 54% to 52% and slowly drain. Is this an indication of a pooched battery?
Any suggestions? I will order a battery. Where do you guys order your batterries, I read that the oem samsung 1500 is reliable.

[Q] Battery problems

I hope I am in the right forum for this...
Lately my two year old tf700t won't stay on for more than 10 mins at a time. I have the dock and both parts say more than 100% charged.
Due to my device being out of warranty and thinking something was wrong with my stock asus rom. I downgraded the rom, rooted it, unlocked and tried several different roms.
My tablet is still turning off even though it says it is 100% charged.
Is my problem a bad battery? I think it has discharged "fully" (to where it warns me) maybe 10 times in the two years i've had it in the dock. It has almost always been plugged in or lightly used around the house. It has never been drained and recharged repeatedly to the point that I would have thought it to be worn out by now.
When I've had batteries go previously, they just drain fast from 100% to 0%. Both batteries are at 100% and it won't stay on but maybe 10 minutes unplugged. When I plug it in, it takes about 5-10 mins before it turns back on again. Meanwhile, the led by the power button blinks orange like the battery is dead. When it turns back on, it tells me I'm fully charged. grr
Does anyone know what is going on? Is there a way to test the battery or is there some chip inside the thing that needs to be reset or something.

It sounds like that you have a calibrations issue with your device. When your device is shut off by itself, you should leave it unplug about a day. Then recharge your device after a day of depletion and hope that it will solve your problem, good luck...:fingers-crossed:

Mhhhh - "almost always plugged in"?
Not the best use for these batteries. 2 years of that could have killed it.... And then - may not have anything to do with it if the battery went bad. 2 years is not an unreasonable life expectancy for a battery for a portable device.
In addition to LMK's suggestion, you could try this:
Let it die and then sit for a day unplugged.
Connect it via USB to your PC and let it trickle charge for 8+ hours (charging indicator will not even come on). Make sure your PC doesn't shut down or go into sleep mode during that time.
It should be charged enough to boot it. Check if it made a difference.
