Grand Central through myFaves - G1 Android Development

If I use jf's mod'd firmware, will I still have myfaves functioning as it normally would. I need to continue routing my grand central calls through myfaves or my phone bill will be out of control.
Also, does anyone else have any similar methods for saving minutes.
I appologize in advance for this question not being entirely developmental in nature; feel free to threadlock me at any time(just let me get a yes or no on my question first please ;P)

You don't actually need MyFaves on your phone to use it. You can update and maintain the numbers online so no you shouldn't lose that ability. Also as long as you use a RC33 version than your phone will still have MyFaves installed.

I have GC (sorry everyone... no invites) and use it as a Myfaves. You should never have to access your GC account through Myfaves because all of your calls should be INCOMING. Now if you want to place a call there is a GC app which includes a dialer so you can use that instead of the standard dialer. It works pretty much the same except after you hit the send key a message comes up that says "Waiting for GrandCentral to call" and then your GC number comes up as an incoming call. Answer it and then it connects you to the number you dialed. I also have my VM set though it. Settings>Call Settings>Voicemail and set your GC number from your contacts and your done!
The fw version is actually insignificant. I used this method BEFORE I rooted my phone and even used it on my Krzr K1 back in the day.
Kind of a long winded "yes or no" but I'm certain that this answers your question.

The name of the GC app mentioned above is G1 Central. Of course you need a GC account to use it. It would be nice if Google ever opened the service up. Nice complement to the phone.

Yeah, I use G1 central to dial out and have all my incomming calls come from my grand central number which is in my myfaves, so I don't use any minutes...ever. I just don't want to lose that when I root.

As far as I know the invites option has been removed. I tried looking for it last week to send some out but it's nowhere to be seen. Google acquired GC a couple years ago I think but as far as I know they haven't done anything with it. It's still technically in a beta stage. There has also been a couple of times that I tried dialing out from the G1 Cental app and it didn't go though. No explaination on why. I checked their site and it said that I needed to "renew credits" to continue. Something tells me that when (or if) Google pulls this off their back burner they will probably charge people for outgoing calls. So I try not to send many of my out going calls through it unless I'm really hurting on my minutes (I only have the 300 min myfaves plan). The best thing about it with the G1 Central app is that you actually have a visual voicemail and you never have to delete the vm messages either. Bad thing about that though is that you have to download the message as an mp3 file which gets stored onto your card and you listen to it like you would a regular media file. That is only if you want to use the visual voicemail feature though. But I love my GC because it saves me HUGE on the minutes and I would gladly pay for the service... but within reason.

Rooting doesn't have anything to do with your Grand Central service.
Heck... you can use Grand Central through your home or office phone if you like.
Here's how it works:
You have your GC number: 555-123-4567
You have your home number: 555-321-9876
You have your office number: 555-111-2222
You give out your GC number to your friends/family or whoever and you set it up to forward to one (OR EVEN BOTH) of your other numbers.
IF they call your home or office then it goes through like regular.
Now I have my voicemail service for T-Mobile as my GC number.
So after 4 rings (or whatever) instead of it going to my VM it goes to my GC number and then gets sent right back to my phone. If I still don't answer then it goes to my GC voicemail.
GC also has a spam filter and a caller blocking feature as well which makes it nice to get rid of telemarkers. If you want to block someone they get a fake "The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service..."

Not sure if this was already posted, but no more relying on SMS for syncing!!!
Until I can see confirmation that this is effective and is not going to drain my battery, I'm staying put with the workaround which works great and works in seconds.
I have not used Google Voice a ton, but the new version seems to be tons slower at notifications. Today they took about about an hour to come.

if you got the GV app and you're using it "for all calls" it should display your gv number...
PS the delay is about AT MOST 1-2 minutes on my hero... (side by side with internet inbox i mean) still better than AT LEAST 5minutes

if you're on a 2.1 rom GV doesn't work properly for making calls but i found this app in the market called gvoice callback that does the trick

Running on a 1.5 ROM (TTG), the notifications in the new version do in fact work properly, and instantly. Woohoo, finally! In fact, while I was cleaning up old 'unread' messages via my PC, my phone was going 'ding' every time I deleted one and the 'new message' notification count changed.

When you are activating the feature on Google, as per instructions here at https://www.google.com/voice/sprint I believe they actually show you the code, *28XXXXXXXXXX, to punch in. Looking around now, I had to search a bit to find it, as I couldn't remember from doing it myself. Anyways, that is it, *28[Your GV Number], and then *38 if you ever want to turn it off.
I was using the SMS workaround. Just disabled SMS to my phone and left a test message.
I received notification on my phone within a minute.
Now, does it drain the battery? I wouldn't think it would as it is push and not a pull.
Oh, and the LED works.

*28 and *38 don't work for me, but the following do:
Call Forwarding - Unconditional = *72(number), *720 to turn off
Call Forwarding - No Answer = *73(number), *730 to turn off
Call Forwarding - Busy = *74(number), *740 to turn off

Fair enough. All the same, *28 is the official code for covering both conditions that normally required *73 and *74. It worked fine for me, and is well documented. Not sure why it wouldn't work for others, but I am no telco expert.
Also, for anyone who was wondering, yes they still charge for *72 (unconditional).

First question: Yes, it does. I dug around a bit for come clarification and found this.

Second question: Not sure how *28 has affected call waiting specifically, but I can tell you that I hate trying to answer a second call in general since I started using GV. It's been a while since I bothered to try, in fact. I remember a few times pressing 'Answer' only to then have a GV voice prompt ask if I wanted to answer the second call or 'add it' to the existing call, and by the time it asks, the 2nd caller is gone and I am lucky to get back to the first. I got frustrated and stopped answering second incoming calls as there is rarely anyone I want to talk to that badly (including clients).
I doubt that my call waiting rant is helpful, but I had to get it off my chest. Whew!

Thanks for the info. I use call waiting a good bit. I often put my kids on hold when a business call comes in, so I'll stick with *73, but just for grins I'm gonna call Sprint and complain that my *28 isn't working.
Does anyone know if it is possible to have two different voicemail messages based on the number the other person dials? I know I can set up different messages for different groups, but I want one message for people who dial my cell # and one message for people who dial my GV#.

[APPS] CSipSimple brings MagicJack to Android

I can take no credit for this, since my sole contribution is to report it on xdadevelopers, and to have tried that it actually work.
The major breakthrough to make this happen was the developers of MJMD5; DTM, Stewart, netdata, az1234 and teddy_b that resides/ed on magicjacksupport.

skype charges i think $30.00 for your online number and $2.99mo for unlimited calls/recieve to usa and canada.....$3.00 * 12months = $36.00 + $30.00 for online number - $66.00
with this app you go buy MagicJack at walmart for $19.99 and you get your online number and 12months call/recieve to usa and canada.
ONE more thing....you can take your cellphone with you and use it on ANY open WIFI

cant beat that....but the app it self is having call problems with my evo over wifi.
if my screen goes dark the call starts breaking up real bad...dont know why it does....prob just a bug.
also when i am connected and i keep tapping my screen to keep it awake (and stay in call) the call loudness/quality isnt that great....not sure why.
i am over wifi so i should be able to pick good settings in the menu but not really sure what i need to pick
if someone could tell me what to put in that app to improve the loudness when on speaker phone and off speaker phone i would appreciate it.

I had magicjack for two years. Worked great. I would sign up again if magicjack works on Android.
It does work on android. I use it in conjunction with google voice to allow me to sill receive calls when I don't have any cell signal but do have wifi.
All I had to do was add my magic jack number as a forwarding option in google voice. Then when I am somewhere without cell service, I connect to wifi, bring up the google voice setup web page and check the check box to enable forwarding to the mj number. So when someone calls my normal number.... No signal... Straight to google voice... Rings my magic jack number... Rings on my wifi connected android phone.

why dont you just use mj the way it is being done here already?
you dont need GV do you?
if someone calls my mj number it will ring on my phone and i can answer it.
i can also make calls.
the call quality is just horrible for me though
at least on my evo
i really wish someone could make a guide showing which settings produce the best quality conversation

I'm sharing my non-standard use of Magic Jack so that others who hate it when they go onsite (or whereever - maybe overseas at a resort with wifi) and don't have cell service but still want to make and receive calls.

i dont understand the part with GV.
the only advantage i can see if that they dont have to call your original mj number.
GV just forwards its number to the MJ number...i think
you dont have to actually use GV though....the people who call you can just have the original MJ number and you can receive calls on your cellphone when they call that number.
With CSipSimple you no longer need to link it up with GV.
As long as you have you MagicJack Sip credentials, you can use CSipSimple, and now also aSip, to make and receive USA/Canada calls w/o any extra charges, as long as your phone has some type of data connection, 3G/4G or WiFi.
Normally, you need to hook up the MagicJack dongle to a Computers USB port.

Hey I'm having troubles setting this up. I installed the APK package onto my Droid 1 (verizon) running Android OS 2.2. After entering the username, password and server (with and without a specific port) it says "Register Failed - Check your Configuration". I have tried different combinations of making new advanced config accounts within CSIPSimple to no avail.
edit-- Also getting 'unauthorized' error
Force closing is a common occurrence while tinkering with the settings. What am I doing wrong? Is there a guide on how to set this up by chance? I'm new to the world of SIP/Softphones/VoIP & such so its a bit tedious at the moment. Also, is a microSD card required to use this?
Haven't been able to get my MagicJack SIP info. None of the process explained in the links seem to be working for me (nor for other people over at the linked page). Still working at it though....
i downlaoded the latest CSipSimple at the link in the first post of this thread.
when i disconnect the MJ dongle in my house and then i activate the MagicJack connection in the CSipSimple Accounts area i get a green light indicating i can make and recieve calls and it actually works fine.
BUT
when i take that same exact phone to town and connect to an open wifi hotspot i get the red indicator at the magicjack account and it says it couldnt register
now i only checked this at one hotspot that had an open wifi (Staples) so i not sure if it is in their router settings or if it is MagicJack Carrier detecting im not using my router (the last router the mj dongle was seen at)
if anyone knows it would be good to pass that info along.
Registration Failed, Request Timed Out, or Unauthorized Error
I don't know if this will help everyone with this problem, but last night I was using CSIPSIMPLE/MagicJack and it worked great. This morning, however, I was getting a registration failed error. I ran SIPDump.exe on the MJ device and found that MagicJack had apparently changed my password. As soon as I updated the password in CSIPSIMPLE it registered within seconds.

The steps worked the first time for me. Just make sure you have SIPDump.exe ready to run and wait for the first ad to start showing up on the MJ softphone, and then quickly hit ok on Sipdump.exe.
Your Username is E**********01 (replace * with area code and phone number)
When you open the first Sipdump1.txt search for Sip.connection.refresh
Your password should be about 7 lines above that. Use all caps when putting the password into CSIPSIMPLE.
My phone number is based out of columbus so I set my proxy to
proxy01.columbus.talk4free.com
CSIPSIMPLE registered within seconds.
Thanks to all who made this possible. I have several places I go that I get wifi but no 3g/cell signal. This allows me to have phone service almost everywhere I go.

i had this working for some time now. recently MJ changed the passwords so i went in there and got the new one. everything else looks the same but it doesnt seem to register for some odd reason. it says unauthorized. i extracted the keys in both the perk script and the other app mentioned int he first post. they are the same and still dont work. is anyone having the same issue?
any help would be much appreciated.

Hit menu -> settings -> lock wifi and make sure it's checked. Your wifi goes to power saver when the screen shuts off.
Please post your experience with the call quality using your MagicJack account on Androic via this app. I've heard mostly bad reviews...
I want this so bad, I leave the country at least twice a year and am always stuck without a phone. Last time I went to UK, Span and France for a month and Skype had canceled their Android service. Two days after I got back they brought the app back (sans video calling). So frustrating.
I tried to get my password, but I was not able. Any suggestions how to find the password and set it on Galaxy S? Any help will be appreciated.

So I was googling for an answer and my research has come up with absolutely squat to solve my solution. So I am hoping someone here can come up with an answer for me.
I had for the last few phones a bunch of WM phones where they have the option to block my outgoing caller ID to non contacts. I am fully aware that Android offers in the options setting to either block it to all outgoing (which isn't of value because it blocks it also to people who I could care less if they have my number) and the other option to show it to everyone (which I'd rather not some people have my number or it be left on a call log so random people couldn't call back from the phone or employees who I simply dislike not getting my non office number) or the last option to use the standard carrier option which is the same as the last which falls under the same reason.
Does anyone have a solution where I can block my number other than dialing *67 to non contacts to block my number as a standard option that the phone would automatically do like WM used to do?

I have a Captivate from AT&T. It has the Android OS and it does have a setting to withhold your number from people who are not in your contacts. You go to call settings, all calls, show my number, and choose By network.
With that said, you should be aware that on AT&T's network this only works if you don't update your phone with firmware update 2.1 update 1. AT&T had this function turned off in this update because they want to charge people $2 a month to withhold your number from people that do not have you in their contacts. I found this out the hard way after I updated. I spent all morning talking to tech support for both Samsung and AT&T. Tech support at Samsung told me that it does not say in the release notes for the update that this function was going to be disabled in that update. Samsung also told me that AT&T decides what is in the maintenance updates. AT&T's customer service said I could pay $2 a month for the function and AT&T's tech support said all they can do is revert the phone back to the old firmware. Maybe if enough AT&T customers complain they will have the function turned back on in the next update.

Have you tried spoofapp? I don't know if caller ID spoofing would be acceptable for your need or not. I've never used it, so I don't know what kind of configuration it would take, but it seems like a hassle. You "place" the call, spoofapp calls you back, when you answer it connects your call with the desired spoofed ID

yeah I looked at it but you have to pay credits into the thing which means paying on a regular basis. So kind of defeating the purpose of it. I do appreciated the look around for it though. I saw the same post either on here or android central.
Just an FYI, many people, myself included won't answer calls where somebody has blocked their Caller ID. That's why we have Caller ID in the first place, so we know who's calling

You miss the point, if you are on the contact list you would be privy to seeing my ID come up anyways. Its people that don't need to have a non work private number that are not deserving of it since you really don't want people from work having the number unless its needed.

Make a Google voice account. When you don't want people to have your regular number, call them with GV and they will have that number.

Nexus s & Google Voice & SIP

Hello People!
I've been trying to research whether or not it is possible to set up a SIP account so that I can call my Google Voice number and then using the voice prompt menu in Google Voice gain access to toll free telephone calls.
I want to do this via the Nexus S. Has anyone done this? If so did you make step by step instructions? I'd like to do the same.

It is indeed possible, through a combination of Google Voice, SipGate, and SipSorcery. It is not very stable in my experience, however, and it also drains your battery rather quickly because you need to be constantly connected (PBXes does help, but adds one more possible point of failure). Now when I want to try I can't do it over 3G. Apparently SIP on Nexus S only allows for Wifi....

I got a IPKall number. I now need a SIP provider that will allow me to place free outgoing & receive free incoming calls.
I guess once I have this then I need to re-edit IPKall with new settings.
BUT can Google Voice be used/edited so that incoming calls are routed to my IPKall number which then are routed to my SIP software?
Alot of the stuff I'm finding on the web simply doesn't work.

@qtwrk- What would you rather have? Money made from the voice side of the business OR money from the data side of the business. With all the apps out there people are burning more data using these apps and this is where the revenue stream is for operators. The voice side of the network is a " just nice to have" for most of them....

i haven't used any IP call software , so i don't really know (i would image IP call software like skype is very similar), but i do have some online voice chat software (because some of my friend who i want call can just sit before a computer and then we can talk , exactly like phone...) , 1 hour , taking 1 hour only needs 3 - 5 mb
by my current operator
500 mb = 8 euros/moth
talking 60 minutes = establishment 0.15 euros , 0.08 euros per minute
0.15 + 0.08*60 = 4.95 euros , plus 18% of Value added tax
5.84 euros ...
so , 8 euros can allow you talk about 1 hour and 20 minutes , or by using Internet , chatting about 100 hours .
if i were your operator , i would definitely have these applications prohibited

Have you looked at GrooVe IP? Dunno if it'll fit all your SIP needs but it integrates well with Google Voice outside of the US.

I've not tried it myself, but my co-workers GrooveIP+G Voice is the solution you are looking for. It's on sale in the Amazon App Store for $1.99 BTW.
Some complaints I've heard are that service latency is often an issue when on 2g/3g. Should be a good solution on Wifi at the house though I would imagine.

@Ibn Saeed - If you read the info about this app via the app market it clearly states that prior to purchasing GrooveIP the user needs to ensure they have a GV # and a gmail account. What this means is that you cannot move forward until you have obtained these two items FIRST. Then when these two pieces are collected you still need to install the plugin for GV into gmail so you got the U.S . dial pad appearing under chat on the left side of gmail window. The instructions say you even need to test it prior to app install and/or download.
Once you have satisfactorily obtained a GV # and a gmail account and did the GV plugin install then you can purchase the GrooveIP app. After that installation is a piece of cake.
I had in the beginning static and echos but then I adjusted the Echo Cancellation and Echo tail settings and things have been working thus far.
Also, you need a good friend to help you test the bluetooth. It works for me but you need to be wary of Mr. Bluetooth's feelings. Sometimes as call is ringing I need to turn it off then back on in order to work.
Also, dial pad is quite similar to the normal dial pad. I could see how one could mistakenly use one over the other.
I also noticed one call in the call log that was recorded as 00:00 long but I spoke for 15 minutes!
I use this over 3G 1MB plan and am amazed how well this works.
Pay attention to Google rate plans. It might be worthwhile having $20 in their account for those calls you might want to use their service when making.

Tmo Gtab 7.0+ WANT to keep but MUST return due to inadvertent calls to dead number

Greetings fellow G-tabbers,
I appreciate everyone's input here and am hoping to be a long-term member of this community.
I would love to keep this tablet but am thinking it's going to have to be returned before my 14 day window with T-Mobile is up.
My questions: Is it possible to set up some kind of workaround to be able to receive CONDITIONALLY FORWARDED calls via the G-Tab/T-Mobile phone number to my other T-Mobile phone (basically, set up conditional call forwarding)? According to T-Mobile they can't because the tablet plan has a code in the system blocking calls.
Or if that's not possible, is there some other way, perhaps spoofing my own cell phone number as my outbound text number instead of using the assigned tablet phone number?

Here's the background:
I am a headhunter for a Federal DoD contractor and as such, I review resumes on various job boards (i.e. Monster.com, etc). As a way to connecting with candidates (I know who they are but they do not know me yet), I send them a text message, email and then voicemail. When setting up my Data Plan, I learned T-Mobile scripted within the system "call block" or "voice barred" feature, Tier 3 tech support at Tmo is unable to set up conditional call forwarding.
As a result of this, should a candidate decide to call my text number they'll get a dead number message saying something to the effect that this phone line cannot take incoming calls.
So what happens is that the candidate things I am unreachable or worse yet that the text message was spam (unless they fully read their text and check their email account).

Im assuming you have a GT-P6200 since tmobiles GTab+ doesnt have phone abilities.
Tell them you dont want/need a tablet plan becuase YOU DONT HAVE A TABLET!
tell them it IS a smartphone, have them try to put you on a smartphone plan, thats
how most of ATT guys sneak by.
at least try to find a smartphone SIM with data/voice to see if it works without issues. It should.
last resort: "bribe" a young tmobile rep to spoof an IMEI to put you on smartphone plan.

I think other people here use smartphone sims with unlimited data on tmobile. Its do-able. Next time, a good rule is to always avoid telling your carrier how you will use your device because you know they think they know what is best.
Anyways spoofing an IMEI, means.. they need a smartphone IMEI in their "system", so a friendly helpful tmobile rep who doesnt care much about getting in trouble or knows his way around takes an IMEI from a never used phone like a demo model, you run an application that reports your IMEI the demo, etc. Its actually probably more involved than this. And Ive heard it may well be illegal, Class C felony. What you might want to ask them is if there is a way to just enter your device as a smartphone and not a tablet, but it is probably generated by IMEI.
PROTIP: if you do have 6200, it's good idea to make 2 backups of your /efs folder (if rooted).

Google Voice is not a 3rd party app, it will completely and natively integrate with your Android stock dialer. If you were on an iOS device it would be terribly clumsy, but not on Android.

There is no stock android dialer in Honeycomb as it was meant only for tablets and not phones. I thought I saw a thread somewhere in here of people using Google Voice with a third party app to make calls. I think you could also use the Goolge Voice number for texting as there were threads on how to do this in my phones forum when Google Voice first came out. I think Skype will also assign you a static phone number to use if you pay for the service. I would also search the other tabs forums to see if anyone in those has a mod for it to work as a phone off a sim card from a carrier. Personally I would trade it in for the Galaxy Note if I wanted to use it as a phone and tablet.
or check out GrooveIP in play store one of the more popular VOIP/SIP applications, has option for 3G, cant guarantee quality will be the same as regular voice, but Im sure its one of the top 3 out there.
After doing some Googleing and reading up on some GTab 10.1 threads it appears that Honeycomb 3.2 on a GSM tablet should be able to make calls if the carrier supports it. Which TMO doesn't. You could try getting a pre-paid sim card and dropping it in to see if it will work, maybe something like Virgin Mobile. There maybe something in the OS from TMO that may block other sims so not sure how that would work.
After thinking about it the tablet is more than likely locked to TMo and it has to be moded to use anohter carrier, like boost mobile. For phones its a complicated hack getting it on another network. I still think your better off getting the Galaxy Note but then you would have to pay for a second phone line and data plan to use both the tablet and your phone at the same time and then conditionally forward your calls as you suggested.

I'm not interested in using my tab to make calls; only to send texts via the native in-built messaging app. I don't want to use other Android apps, just the stock messaging. I am able to do this to great success on Sprint. Sprint is able to go into the backend system and apply conditional call forwarding. Not the case with Tmo.
My main purpose is to NOT miss calls from people who may decide to call via reply to text as that's what appears as my callback number when it's not.

still not sure what device you have. this may be worth a shot, although I understand tmobile says its not possible, etc.

Hi,
Don't want/need to make calls. I only need for texting, however, if one of my candidate prospects (I am unknown to them at this point) attempts to call me via the link on their phone because of my text from the tablet, it'll ring to a dead number, the tablet number.
I ONLY want the calls to be conditionally call forwarded to my other Tmo cell phone which already has unlimited phone minutes.

Hi Chris,
The reason I don't want to use other apps is if/when we move to ICS some of those apps may not be compatible for some time until they upgrade. I was burned using a VOIP app (Line 2) which worked very well and suited my needs on my older Gingerbread Tab (HTC EVO View) and when I upgraded to HoneyComb I learned that Line2 won't and never will support HC and I now know that the EVO View tab will not be upgraded to ICS.
I don't want to go there anymore, it severely impacts my ability to get my work done. I'd much rather use the native messaging app. Also because it doesn't use any data to use the native app, if I use an app from the Play Market, I'm likely going to have to use up my data plan and then I am prone to crashing, etc. Unless I am missing something are there any other alternatives?

Two options:
(1) Sign up for GoogleVoice and port your number to that. This is very easy and will give you full control over where that phone call routes.
(2) Go get a straighttalk SIM ($15) and service ($45, for unlimited) and tell TMO they've lost your business.
Or, do both.
