Firefox for Touch Pro - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi all,
FYI, The good old guys at mozilla have just released an early version of the upcoming browser 'Fennec'. The good news is that this release only works on Touch Pro devices, so I miss out as I have an X1.
Anyway, have a play.

Don't get too excited, this is a very early release and will have a lot of bugs that will most likely make this unusable for everyday use. I'm looking forward to the updates though but this seems more like a proof of concept.

yeah, i realize that. i can see the big picture! just ran it. it takes forever to load. it laggy, but is going to be a nice app when they finish up. the did a good job of incorperating TF into it.

Well, I tried loading it on my X1 and it actually installed and ran. However, same as you Robbie, took forever to start and was very slow. I thought it was just because it was on my X1 and not on a TP, but looks like its just the app.
I like the scroll to the left and right to bring up your bookmarks and tools, very nice.
Look forward to the beta release.
Dev

I've seen the videos on it, and it looks reasonable. It'll be interesting to see how they develop it.

SLOW
Nice to see they released this. To bad it runs like a snail on my Fuze with NATF 4.3.

Cripples my cdma touch pro to the point of frustration.

quickest fastest most stripped down rom?

hey there
i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. i did try searching first but i'm not really finding the answer i'm looking for so thought i'd just ask.
on my wing i'm currently using touch-it 2.3 (i'm pretty sure its 2.3... it's been a while since i installed it)... anyway. it's cool. i like it. but really i don't need all these cool extras. what i'm looking for is just the most stripped down simple and fastest rom i can find. something without any extra touch features (since i don't like touching for using the phone anyway, i use the controller all the time). i just want something that will be fast fast fast and that's it. don't need a big glowing clock. don't need to scroll through things like an iphone. none of that i just want it to not lock up for 10 seconds when i go to slide out the keyboard and start typing... if someone texts me, i can hit reply, slide out the keyboard start typing my message, finish typing a full sentence, and the thing still hasn't even gone to a new reply text yet. then all my letters start comin up that i typed. haha. i want fast!
any ideas on what rom i might like?
thanks so much, and again sorry if this has been covered 100 times... soon i'll be on the touchpro2 and will (hopefully) be happy enough haha.
Either my old JustMe or my old Just2Clean. Or wait for my upcoming JustStable and download the stripped version of the final version. There's a few clean ROMs out there, but I haven't tried them all.

I would def try Justme. It's super stripped, and super fast. It's also extremely stable.
Oh, when the touch pro 2 comes out, I think it will be time for me to make a new purchase as well. Looks awesome.
thanks guys. i'm gonna try justme sometime this weekend and see how it works.

Walkthrough of android 2.0 with loads of screenshots

It seems 2.0 is much closer than was initially thought. Wonder if this update is coming to magics and g1s or if it's only coming on new, higher res screen phones.

F-in sweet!
That is beautiful! So suddenly it seems like i have to buy a new phone... Wonder if this is going to run smooth on our weak phones.

It's funny how things get leaked from HTC all the time and so early in progress
Really looking forward to this update.

Possibly the Moto Sholes/Droid? With blur turned off?
Why is it that 32a users still havent gotten 1.6 and now we are already waiting for 2.0?

One of the pictures actually says "model: droid" so aparently you are right...
Looks like they finally hired some REAL designers to replace the freaking ugly icons android uses now.
Awesome
I wonder how long we will have to wait
ah this looks so sweet, im bored of 1.6 and there really isnt a hero rom that runs smooth enough on a voda magic. this looks much better, lets hope it get released for porting and is smooth!!
Can't wait for 2.0, I like what I see, the new icons are so much better. And finally multi-select in the email app! Hope there's a leak soon
How do we which of these are these are features of 2.0 which are features of the moto droid rom? The artwork, icons and lockscreen etc, for example, I bet they are not standard features of android 2.0.
Still looks pretty cool though! Someone needs to do a nandroid of it and post it here!!

It seems that Droid is a Google Experience phone and therefore Motorola could not have messed with the ROM.
I like some of the "squareness", it seems cleaner and less "bubbly". As mentioned by others, I'm concerned that some of the things I like are actually Motorola-specific, although it's mostly all visual stuff so I can see themes being able to mimic this anyhow if necessary. I bet the icons and the lock screen are Motorola's.
I'm a little ambivolent about the "driver mode" stuff. I don't know that drivers should be doing anything with their phones AT ALL while they are at the wheel. I think it would have been better to eschew that custom screen and just have optional use of voice commands throughout the interface. Then again, it's still legal to use phones while driving in many countries, so I suppose this was necessary to stay ahead of the competition.
that looks sweet. can't wait.
i just hope i see official support for bluetooth profiles like obex.
and also more video support for avi, mkv etc.

Quick live wallpapers+sticking?

First off am I the only one that wishes the original opengl would stick? Performance was alot better for that one (especially for the nexus wallpaper). Is getting the performance of the original live wallpaper we had and the sticking of the new patch possible? Right now that is the only problem stopping my phone from being the sex.
EDIT: Problem seems to happen when another widget is updated. Its not perfectly smooth, but not bad, but when a widget updates it really slows down the wallpaper to a noticeable halt. I doubt im the first to notice this, but for anyone else that really wants nexus wallpaper, having less widgets on your main page seems to help.
I moved the news+weather widget you see below to another page and it seems to jitter less.
I agree. Losing the performance from the new OpenGL isn't worth having LWP's. They might have a fix for this when Toast's Awesome Sauce ROM is complete.

Ive wanted them ever since i saw them and i think its pretty awesome
that we can run them @ all on a phone that has half the horsepower
as their intended to run on. be happy you have the option. If you like
them i dont really exp all this slowdown everyone is crying about now

hunt you down and put them in your phone.........so the choice is yours
but no sense in being anything other than greatful for what we have atm
unless you have something to help us improve the issue as it stands.
Maybe you could try to solve the issue for us rather than wasting your time

and doing research to find answers and fixes to my issues. And Yes if i wasnt
happy with them so far thats what id be doing but i got my victory about
1 week ago when i stumbled across someone in another forum with the
patch for them to stick on another phone. My goal was getting them to

can now have FULL FUNCTION roms, which we couldnt do before.

Yeah I disagree with "there is no point in having them if it is slower".......the patch works pretty dam well with most wallpapers its just the peski nexus being alittle to slow to be usable for me. MagnusRagnarok my OP was not an attack on you at all. I am extremely thankful for what you have done, and hope you have not taken my post that way. I am just trying to see if more people feel the same way as me. For me getting the nexus one wallpaper running alittle bit better would get me closer to completing my phone.
Ill bump since I edited my first post. Hopefully someone finds it helpful.

Hey guys, I know a lot of us have been dying to get the nexus wallpaper working without having to do the opengl fix to make wallpapers stick, seeing as it made the wallpaper ran really choppy. I found a way to get it to stick, run smooth, and not have to change the opengl. I used the update zip posted by emerica6541 and it stuck right on and have ran smooth ever since. Granted he did modify the wallpaper so the lights are smaller, but I think it looks better that way on our heroes due to the smaller screen. It has survived multiple reboots, and over 30 mins of sleep time. I am running darch's legend rom though, so I'm not sure if this will work for damage's or flipz's roms, but its worth a shot.

This is the point of the thread, not to shoot down other's hard work but to improve on it....I think thats what xda is about.

Just a note though, when you first set the wallpaper, your phone will freeze for a min, then it'll take you to the bootscreen. Once it reloads, you should be good to go.

I had it on my sd. Sadly it does not seem to make any difference. It is smooth enough (alittle bit jittery but not too bad) but once a widget updates it stops just like the other version of nexus wallpaper.

I agree. Even for an Alpha version it's extremely slow and crash-prone.
Startup times are horrible and it took up so much memory on my Incredible that the homescreen actually got cleared from the RAM and had to reload itself. Some websites wouldn't load and installing extensions was nearly impossible. Pressing the back button wouldn't always update the screen either.
It's one of the prettiest I've seen, though, but that's about all I can give it...

So whats the verdict on this browser? Any good? Bright future and not yet there??
To answer your question its terrible not nearly ready yet
for me it took up over 60mb of memory, which is like half my usual available
Fennec is pretty bad, as in really really bad. Just as Firefox was when it first hit the bitstream. Now, Firefox is a great browser with great features and an even better price.
Instead of giving the Mozilla folks the finger, I suggest we applaud them for even getting this far. Yes, I yanked Fennec off my phone about 30 seconds after I was finally able to install it because the room started to stink, but I'll try it again when it has been made a little better.
Even our esteemed ROM cooks released some doozies when they first started. Today's ROMs run smooth with cool features and very few FCs anymore. So let's cut the Mozilla crew some slack, acknowledge their effort, and in another few months, we'll be amazed at the capabilities of Fennec (although by then it will be named Firefox).

Agreed, I usually give apps that don't wow me a couple hours of lifespan before I remove them.
This one got the ban hammer faster than anything.
Some things I noted:
They're doing nightly builds, so check in periodically to get the latest.
It isn't as feature-rich (or complete) as Dolphin HD.
The killer feature for me is Mozilla Sync - and it works. All my desktop Firefox bookmarks came in fine. If you're a Firefox user, Fennec is something to keep tabs on.
But it's not the release version. They're painfully slow in getting this project going, and I'm afraid by the time they have something ready for prime time, the mobile browser market will have already split between Dolphin or Opera.
[Edit: And for the Incredible, ensure you're getting the ARMv7 version.]
I would suggest downloading and installing the Nightly build found here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/nightly/latest-mozilla-central-android-r7/
Loaded up only using 17 mb of memory, synce went fine, Been useing it for a day or so without any issue... Never goes above 28mb of mem usage on inc. Im using
the 8/29/10 nightly build.
Been using this browser for a couple days now (Just to provide some feedback to Mozilla since any feedback during the alpha stage is awesome for devs). While I agree that it is slow and glitchy, for an alpha build it's actually pretty impressive. Firefox Sync is amazing and I like the idea behind the scroll-to menus. For those of you freaking out about how terrible it is, download it again, run it for a little bit, coalesce your thoughts into a reasonable critique then submit it to Mozilla to help them better this project.
Remember, nothing will put iPhone users in their place like "Oh yeah? Firefox. Suck it."

At any rate, I think VS may still have a shot at this. If they can push the update before the 25th than they might still have a chance. I can even imaging the G-tablet competing with the ipad if they ether A) Fix TnT B)Have a disable option.
Anyways, Viewsonic, if you read this keep up the good for and dont listen to the critics yakking about the screen.

Roeby,
Subjective question, but since I am super happy with a nice & stable 2.4, do you think 3.0 is worth upgrading to? One thing I am not thrilled about is losing the ratings stars on apps in the market.
I actually prefer the old market. My Incredible (even though rooted) updated to the new market. Too busy, IMO. Old market is nice & simple. Seems Android is trying for the XBOX look
Any insight on what makes 3.0 worth the jump would be appreciated
Newer Nvidia drivers in the update, as an example perhaps? added: Regardless, I just did a CW back-up and new Titanium update, just in case
This is wonderful! I was a bit shocked by Staples actions and all the rumours, and is good to see VS fighting back!

Not sure if this would save their Xmas sales but should improve their sales next year, I think.
The gtablet would be a good low end tegra 2 tablet next year. That should be their selling point, IMO. However, I do (like I said before) give props to VS.

I went back and forth about the stars, myself. You could just as easily downgrade Vending.apk versus upgrade, and I figured that Google might force the upgrade on you, anyway (they've done that the last two times and it's how I got 2.2.7 in the first place). So I figured the new Market was the way to go.
3.0 does has video improvements, new Maps, TSCalibration hack and of course the SDCARD2 scanning which is a big plus in the new firmware. I think it's worth getting.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to this community, Adam.
Wow go viewsonic!!! Honestly this was an awesome move in my book.. they used xda as feedback and a community to learn from rather than other manufacturers using xda to figure out how to block root.

I agree. It is refreshing to see a company react to things as they are in the real world instead of the idealization that they had for product conception. I feel like a lot of big name companies would have never acknowledged a "lowly internet forum" as a source for feedback and product insight. Viewsonic earns a lot of kudos for their prompt response to kernal source issues. Even though the original stock is viewed as a fail by most, Viewsonic addressing the issue publicly AND actually releasing updates is very good business.
I feel much happier holding my gtab and no longer wonder if I should be taking advantage of the return window.
Yup, good for VS. As a side note, I was going to buy a panasonic projector, but now I'm looking at VS, because of the positive way they have responded here.
