Hey guys.
I seem to be having an error message popup on my phone about 3/4 of the time once I reboot. (see attached image)
Usually hitting wait works, but sometimes i have to force close it.
I have JFs 1.41
I thought at first it was due to the fact that I removed several stock apps (amazon mp3, calculator & alarm clock)
I also removed my entire stock ringtones folder.
So I put everything back in its place.
However, I still have the same issue!
I also tried debugging with dalvik. Didn't get much...
Anyone know whats goin on?
TIA
EDIT: Also, just wondering if theres a way to reset the phone without losin all my apps. Other than backup, i'm trying to avoid installing all of em again ;0.
I get the same error on startup
Just to add my 2 cents... I have as well removed the Alarm Clock, and Amazon MP3, and the stock ringtones (but left the folders intact & put my own tones in). I am running JF1.41, and have never seen this message.
Did you do a Nandroid backup before you started messing with things? If so, you can simply restore that, otherwise.... You would have to re-install everything in order to do a factory reset.
Have you tried going to Manage Applications - Media Storage - and clearing the data?
I would try doing a full wipe of the phone and see if the problem continues.
Just my 2 cents

Yea I've tried clearing the data. Its not fixin it tho. I have several nandroid backups. I would do a wipe but wouldn't that get rid of my apps?
Thanks guys.
restoring a nandroid backup to a time when you didn't have this issue would be the best bet, you would only lose the changes you have made since that backup.

Well I had my apps and cache on my SDcard and after updating to JF 1.41 i had to do a wipe to get it to work, but after it was up and running I just replaced the mountd.conf and init.rc files and recreated the symolic links again and rebooted and all my programs were back. Just thought I would share cause this way pretty much worked for me to not have to reinstall all my apps... I'm still pretty new to all this so maybe there is a better way.. but this worked for me...
Unusual...
First I did a nandroid restore to the time a little after I got JF's 1.41. Everything was fine at first. I installed all of my apps. Tried to reboot a few times, and bam, I see it again.
In a rage--I wipe my fone from recovery mode. I then use MyBackup to restore all of my settings and apps.
I finish, and then i try a reboot and BAMMM ****in android.process.media is not responding.
Then I tried to reboot 3 more times wthout a problem and then the 4th time gave me the same problem.
Can anyone else whose having the same issue tell me what apps theyve recently installed?
Ive figured it out. But still stuck.
The problem was that i setup a symlink for my market cache to my sd card.
I removed the /data/data/com.android.vending/cache folder and my sd cards linked cache folder.
I then made a new cache directory in com.android.vending however I noticed that it wasnt working properly. It wasnt filling up with cache when i used the market.
I removed the symlink so why wouldn't it, right?
So I chmodded it.
I tried to chown it but i keep getting back unknown user app_5 (the markets ID)
I'm stuck please someone help me out here, and hopefully we can even get the market cache properly directed to my sdcard in the process.
THANKS!

try using the numeric id with chown instead. i.e. 10005 (not positive if it will work.. just something to try)
AHhh Yay JF ILY! That worked . I feel like a retard now.
The cache appears to be filling up as normal. The error isnt gone yet tho.
The question still remains. What causes that error?
How could i stop it?
The crashing process has the same gid/uid as Android.providers.media
it seems to be an app. I wiped and then I reinstalled 1.41. Then I installed all of my apps using mybackup. I made sure to do nothing else after, and I still got it.
Its either JF's 1.41 or an app.
How can I find out
Process of elimination. Wipe the phone again, instal jf's 1.41 and boot the phone. If you don't have the error, bingo, it's an app. Then, tedious as it may be, install the apps 1 at a time and reboot after install to see if you get the error.
Yeah I have done that.
However, its reallly hard because sometimes itll go 4-5 boots without a hitch, and then suddenly itll happen.
Then at other times it'll happen nearly every time.
I have about 65 apps. That's 4-5 boots, after installing each one.
So that would mean HUNDREDS of boots. At least 200.
I've been thinking that maybe its a problem with the MyBackup app.
What if the fact that mybackup overloads the phone with 20-30 installations at a time is whats causing the issues.
Well i'm off to error and error. I mean trial and error.
I've figured it out!
It's something to do with my wifi connection.
I think its that my dns's are from opendns.
Basically whenever my wifi is active when I turn on my phone i get that error.
If i turn it off and reboot into 3g, i never have a issue.
That's why it was so random before and I couldn't find any patterns!
I'm gonna call my ISP tomorrow, but anyone know what it could be?
I don't think it has anything to do with OpenDNS. I use JF1.41 RC30, MyBackup, and OpenDNS and never have any problems...
Hmm, do you have your router setup for opendns or your phone.
I have issues where i cant get my damn router to give out working IP's, so I
need to setup the phone for a static ip and dns.
I think that if I could get it to automatically get an IP i'd be set.
EDIT: Also, could it have anything to do with the fact that I have wpa personal security (AES)
Im having a similar problem but my error is slightly different
"com.google.process.gapps" anyone know WTF that is
Its the G Talk service.
If you dont use that app you could try removing it and see if that does anything ..
Since this has been bumped, i'd like to add that it still happens whenever I'm on wifi. Really blows

Care to explain how?? Im a serious noob lol
so heres my issue dopey me set a lock pattern coz the ex was coming over. Of course I set it in a hurry not once but twice (the confirmation screen). Now its stuck saying too many attempts...
I did manage to highjack the menu while it restarted with the USB tether in place. Now its not letting me even do that anymore. Looks like my only recourse is a hard reset.
Before i do that, is there ANY way I can back up my text messages. (i have legal reasons to try to score the data. I am logged into it via adb at the moment...I even tried to root the phone. and highjack root by unmounting and remounting that didn't work I know which two directories i need to edit in. And that G1 forum talks about setting a variable from 1 to 0 that doesnt work because the directory is flagged 0771 and owned by system (yup I captured the init.rc file.
anywho thoughts idears, (break my heart coz i have to flush my phone...)
No back up? That sucks
Sent from my Liquid using XDA App
of the texts?? you can do that ? lol I have lookout.com on there which I am disappointed i does not backup my 200 contacts. but as i said I have everything else off there I even have an SD card I can plug in and copy to...
First off there should be a file somewhere on the phone not sure where ire what the name is right now i will look into it. Sms backup+ or use Google voice sms right into your email account might help ibm the future.
so i rootkitt'ed my phone..... still can't chmod or chown. its sitting over there sadly looking at me locked... defunct saying "reset me!"
I've done that before, but after 5 attempts there was a button in the lower right corner that let me sign in with my google account. Do you not have that option?
software bug apparently its broken.
I'm an android newbie, so I might be missing the obvious but I looked around and couldn't find anything.
I just installed Cyanogen 6.1 RC1, installed fine, and now I want to install dropbear on it.
I found a thread that said how to do it, and I had it all setup, made my keys and everything, but when I went to run it I got
TRACE (79): bind(22) failed
so I did ifconfig (as root) and got nothing.
Okay, I can see why I can't bind to port 22 when there are no interfaces to bind to.
This ifconfig came from busybox which seems to come with cyanogen so I assume it works...
I'm connected via wifi, that all works, but no interface.
Any suggestions where to start looking?
Just in case anybody's taking tallys the camera also yields a blank screen that hangs forever, but that doesn't bother me so much yet, I'm really interested in being able to ssh to the phone.
Thanks for any help anybody can provide.
Like, what's ifconfig supposed to display?
so I'm slowly learning
I rebooted my phone, tried to run dropbear again and got the same error unable to bind, but this time it said "address already in use"
Hunh.
So I tried to ssh to it, and voila game on.
So that worked itself, out.
Now that I have a real keyboard to type on I start poking around, and realize that busybox can't do everything it might on a rather fuller linux machine, so ifconfig is just not going to work. Fair enough.
While I realize everything has to be flashed into rom, it's a shame /etc is in rom where one could tidy things up to their liking a bit more.
But a great system it is.
Just today I went in 2 stores, and checked the compass on all of the Demo units (and 2 retail units I have). When I turn on the device for the first time, compass (magnetic sensor is not calibrated), but when I go to *#0*# and then sensors, and do few phone movements trough the air, magnetic sensor becomes calibrated (number 0 and red line becomes number 3 and blue line in black circle). After this, all is OK until I restart the phone. After this, if you go again to the sensors menu, magnetic sensor lost it's calibration details.
I read somewhere that I should delete ms3c_yamaha.cfg file from /data/system/ folder and restart the phone, but this doesn't help. I also read that I should run sensorcalibutil_yamaha - I didn't have this binary on my phone and then I downloaded it from the github. When I try to run it from the adb shell, i get:
Code:

Does anybody know how can I save calibration data that will be preserved between phone restarts?
i tried this : factory reset and than calibrate it, didnt turned my phone off and checked google maps. Arrow was good and location.
before i had problems with calibration.
i tied factory reset but no luck. after re-calibration everything seems fine, but only until I restart the phone. after this, calibration settings are lost, and I have to re-calibrate.

There's a couple other threads about this issue floating around actually. Someone said that Samsung has accepted this as a flaw and you can exchange the phone. Another person said that if you're in the maps app, just calibrate your phone then and there (by rotating the phone on three axes) and the compass will work.
Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/compass-calibrated-t3089341
Few other people report the same problem. In fact I checked few other devices and they were all suffering from the same issue. That's why I doubt it is hardware fault, although DevonSloan wrote Samsung in Best Buy says it is a hardware problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/samsung-acknowledges-problem-compass-t3105197/
I have to ask him if he exchanged the phone and if it helped.

I replied in the other thread, but I'll just say it here as well - I just refrain from rebooting my phone as much as I'd like to. It's easier than me going to the hassle of going to a Sprint store and jumping through whatever hoops they will have for me.
still a problem
I've been in all of the shops in my town. Each edge & s6 has this problem. I checked if this is the case on s4, but NO - s4 is saving calibration data between the restarts...
I assume there must be some fix that will make sensor use saved data on restart.
Well, my S6 edge also suffers from this defect/annoyance. . . I'm assuming nearly every S6 owner is dealing with this... If ANYONE has an S6 that maintains compass/magnetic calibration after a reboot, please let us know(carrier & model# with build/purchase date) so we can attempt to exchange our phones! . . . or kindly post the fix (if software related) ! !
What is funny I replaced my device because of other issue (camera app closing while starting from lock screen with fingerprint lock activated). It turned out it did not solve neither the camera app issue nor the compass calibration issue. It seems Samsung has to deliver some software patches...
Good to see that I'm not crazy I also have the problem with the calibration not staying and google maps direction arrow not pointing correctly.
I have a similar problem; I have to calibrate unfortunately again and again in navigation apps.
Hello!
This is a discussion thread for NEC Terrain.
The hardcore steps, which are bootloader unlock, rooting and even repartitioning have found their solutions and can be found in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2515602 for the discussion
https://github.com/x29a/nec_terrain_root for an apk which opens for you an ability to have the system area of the phone writeable
https://github.com/alex-kas/nec_terrain for the last ideas on how recovery and boot images should be and a list of stock apps to disable with explanations
So, all questions regarding all the above should be asked in that thread as they are off-topic here.
Currently we have to use this device with its stock components. You are welcome to contribute with workaround related to known oddities here.
Note that many questions were already asked in the above mentioned thread and some of them have answers. However, since that thread is supposed to for the rooting/unlocking, it is more than logic to separate the topics and discuss the end-user phone features here.
If you have a serious idea towards a new custom ROM then you should go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/rom-nec-terrain-custom-rom-t3162061
That thread is dedicated for the developers of a new csutom ROM for NEC Terrain
Thanks for understanding the thread aim and welcome!
First exploration
You can find apps which can be disabled with some explanation why in
https://github.com/alex-kas/nec_terrain/tree/master/system
The speciall account should be paid to the following issues:
Why stock Contacts and Phone must not be disabled
Why apps with provider in their name should treated carefully
Current impossibility to activate a soft keyboard (if you need chinese, for example).
The latter question of a soft-keyboard for this phone has been asked before in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2806270
and has no answer. There is further discussion on this in my github (see above)
On more oddity which at least my phone has: when I travers to
Settings->wrieless & networks->more...->Mobile networks
I see as the last option "network operators". This option i constantly greyed out. It is useful in roaming as often different orpeators have different prices. Also, near the borders of a country som eforeignn operators can be captured. This is bad. Anyone with ideas on this?
i was wondering if someone with a fully functional Terrain upload their /system/app folder and its contents, I've seemed to remove an essential app somewhere and now I can't do phone calls or terrain hotspot.

I can do this tomorrow. I am able to phone call, hotspot, etc. I've noticed that with me, sometimes the phone UI won't show up when someone calls me so I cannot answer the phone... If this happens, just do a Wipe Data on the phone apk and reboot.

No problem man . Just curious, what is your backup phone?

My nieces phone for her upcoming birthday. The excuse I'm making to myself is that I'm "test driving" it. It's called the Xperia Tipo, she's only 9 and would be using it at more or less a little toy; no SIM card. I have better ones actually, HTC One and a Moto X (2013), the latter being my favorite phone without a hardware keyboard.
I'm wondering about 2 questions, guys:
1. @Daxiongmao87, what is the hotspot you are talking about?
2. @jasonmerc, can you provide to me the list of your apps, enabled and disabled? Or, if you just uninstalled them (so no disabled) then only enabled.
I want to see the list given in adb shell by
pm list packages -e -f [for ENabled with file-names]
pm list packages -d -f [for DISabled with file-names]
I'm curious about this can/cannot do phone calls. I had established some dependence but you have said you CAN do calls with attsettingsprovider disabled and even see contacts. Very strange to me and I want to find the truth I.e. Can I or not eventually get rid of stock contacts at all.
Thanks in advance.
@alex-kas hotspot meaning wireless tethering. There's a system app with the package name containing hotspot. I believe jasonmerc already provided me with that earlier along with the phone apk, but ultimately did not help fix my issue. My symptom for the two issues are as follows:
Wifi Hotspot (Tethering)
-Under the Tethering & portable hotspot menu, toggling Portable Wi-Fi hotspot reveals a subtext that reads "Failed to set transmit power"
Phone Calls
-My phone no longer notifies me whether or not I have a SIM card. No icon or any indicator at all. My signal icon always shows zero bars. attempting to make a phone causes Contacts to crash ("Unfortunately, Contact has stopped.") and haults the phone call process.
I hope this information helps a little bit. More than likely i'm missing a vital app that I carelessly removed upon tinkering.

Have you read my github?
https://github.com/alex-kas/nec_terrain/tree/master/system
If not, try to see there. I spent quite a time and I'm sure my phone IS working in both aspects you mention. Pay attention to: contacts, phone, attsettingsprovider and installation of "dw contacts". All of that is by purpose. Perhaps, my phone would not work w/o "dw contacts" but I just learned that a replacement (which joins phone app and contacts app, which are disintegrated once you remove attsettingsprovider) MUST be.
You will find there files: lists of enabled and disabled programs. Compare with yours. In adb shell:
pm list packages -d [gives disabled packages] -s [if only system]
pm list packages -e [gives enabled packages, all, system and 3-rd party] -s [if only system]
My lists contain ONLY system apps. 'system' are those who reside in /system/apk OR in /data but are upgrades to initial system apps. Hope this helps. If you have put there superuser - it is system now, for example.
I can also imagine that moving some app to sdcard makes the system buggy. I had no full skype autostart then it was moved.
hotspot in the name does NOTHING with tethering.
@alex-kas you should have a full list of apps I have installed already, I PM'd you a list a while back. About to do the /system/app dump, most likely I'll package it as a zip or 7z file and upload and share from Google Drive.
Also as a little update, I mentioned the GPL stuff in my ATT thread. Waiting for a response

@alex-kas after successfully applying your custom recovery and resizing my partitions i seemed to have lost my boot animation and sound. It just shows a black screen. Is this intended? Perhaps with the new build.prop?
Yeap, i disabled bootanimation. It seems to increase the boottime even more.

Yes, I've experienced reboots when doing multiple things. For me it's usually just watching a video or something... Perhaps it overheats and that's what causes the reboot. On average my Terrain's CPU is somewhere in the 120°F range, and if I use it it can go up to 145°F at times. It will sometimes even get so hot that I get a notification stating the device is too hot to continue charging, and I need to try charging again in a few minutes. Is this normal?

Hmm I thought I replied to this. I experience overheats as well, but mostly when using maps. However, I haven't been able to see a correlation between reboots and overheating. I have a feeling that when available memory gets too low the system becomes unstable and inevitably reboots. With the new partition size I was able to install hearthstone without any need for apps like Link2SD, but upon loading all of its assets to start an actual game session it reboots every single time. When not attempting to play that game, during times where the phone feels sluggish or unresponsive, it often follows with a reboot.

This is exactly what I have denoted as the kernel bug, see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61915007&postcount=293
In addition to the info there: reboots happen if several not so big files (say, 50MiB each) are read in a row, not just a single file of > 500MiB. Loading a large set of game assets just confirms this.
I traced this bug and the point is that its origin is a mystery to me. It is in a part which I would never imagine was changed from the linux source. Just no need for this.
In short, the ext2,3,4 driver, reading data, then caches them (linux always caches, all it reads, as much as possible). At some point the cache request to allocate the memory just ignores the negative answer (i.e. no memory), it just does not check this answer at all and caches to NULL, i.e. start of the memory, where the memory map is. As it is the kernel, it has right to write there, writes, kernel panics - reboot.
How come? I have no idea. This code was already working in about 2005 ... and bug-free in about 2008 ...
@alex-kas you get what you pay for I guess...
