i want to do a factory restore on my phone to clean all the unnecessary junk file created before, i am using windows mobile 6.1, htc touch pro, dont know if it matters
i am wondering after i do the restore, do i have to install all my programs again on my storage card or i can just take my storage card out when doing the factory restore and once restore is completed, i can plug in the storage card and use the program with no problem??
i have quite a lot of program on my storage card and i lost those .cab files overtime, dont want to spend time looking for it again.
does anyone know if this will work??
many thanks
it depends. some applications require system files to be installed either in root/program files or in root/windows on your internal storage... so it's hard to tell whether you will lose them or not.
you can list the applications you have installed and i'll tell you what i know.
the one i really want to keep is my GPS, is Garmin and is installed onto the storage card
garmin should have its installation ready in the storage card incase you had to hard reset.
If you purchased garmin, you wouldn't have a problem installing it again and getting the maps
Nir, you get around my friend haha.
@rubbishhk, just a note, when you come to reinstall ur apps, if you dont delete the folders where the programs are installed on your storage card (garmin excepted) you will find u get an error when trying to re-install that program as the files already exist.
Back up ur storage card as it is to ur PC, then delete the program folders. u will then be able to re-install them no probs. Wot i do is save all my cabs in a folder on the storage card, so if i ever have to hard reset, at least i have the cabs saved on my card ready to go.
ps use advanced config and turn off "delete cabs after install" that way they will always stay on r card after u install.

yeah, TF3DHD should be very cool.
I tried tflo3d and it worked and was kool (obviously jerky still) but lets hope the team find a solution for the 3d driver power off issue.
you are aware of the fact that there's something called "TF3D standby" which lets you turn off your display right?

Tap menu/show all files. Scan the complete directory for the missing folder. You may need to hard reset again with the storage card out of the device.
so last night i flashed my hermes to the new wm6 4.0 after performing PIMbackup. only problem is that i backed up my contacts and stuff to my phone and not to my memory card. i did have another PIMbackup file from last week on my memory card which i deleted just before i did this recent backup. is there any way to recover the backup file that i just deleted last night??? im looking around and see there are programs to recover picture files made for digital cameras im looking for something like that but will find other files as well, there has to be a way please someone help!!!
when connected to the pc using a sd reader all pc harddisk undelete tools work on sd cards just as they do harddisks
Yes ! there are certain softwares,e.g "Recover My Files" software and some others likewise, which they claim can recover the deleted items through recycle bin recently and if the Hard disk is not reformatted after it. I'm not sure, how far it's possible or not , as I have not personally used them so far.
There are also some 'Data Recovery' web based services, who get lost or deleted data recovered from Hard disks but you'll have to send your hard disk to them to get the job done, and of course, they'll charge you for that..
Search through 'Google' for data recovery tools and check if it does the job.
Cheers
Recover My Files is a fantastic software....iv used it a couple of times nd it gets out almost all the deleted data....but yea if uv performed a format u might get back only a few files....but no harm in tryin

Resque Pro from sandisk works like a charm.
This is a question I always keep forgetting to ask til it's too late and I've already installed a new rom, then re-installed all my favorite cab files.
This may be a "Beginners 101" question that I just never knew the simple answer to.
I have always presumed, perhaps wrongly, that apps that get installed to your storage card always install some .dll or registry files to the device, and thus when you Flash to a new Rom, all those dynamic links residing on your device which refer to your Storage Card app installations get WIPED OUT on the device... thus rendering your Applications on Storage Card no longer operational.
But maybe there is a "list" of apps which you've previously installed to your Storage Card which will work immediately again with your newly installed ROM on your device?
Because today I was moving from a previous ROM which had TouchFlo 2D installed -- to a new one that has TouchFlo 2D installed. After looking at the new ROM, I wanted to customized some of the touchflo elements, so I wanted to use the M2DC customization tool -- as I am not a code tinkerer and don't know how to find & replace specific components.
I looked at the Programs listed on my device that had just been flashed with new ROM, and I didn't see the M2DC app on it... So, just like I had to re-install, from my storage card, cabs for PCMkeyboard, WkTask, Google Maps, etc, I was prepared to install my M2DC .cab from my storage card. So I tried to. But after I would select where I want to place this program, on device or storage card, and I chose "Device", I got error message saying "Installation Unsuccessful. You do not have permissions to do (this)"... So I tried again this time choosing the Storage card, and I got the same error message.
So my conclusion was that for whatever reason, this particular ROM (this one, if it helps in troubleshooting this) was rejecting my installation of that app onto either the card or device. I figured, this just be a bug.
Later I was looking at my storage card thru file explorer, and I saw under Storage Card > Programs
a folder called M2DC ... and I figured, hmph, maybe it partially installed but got stuck due to this permissions thing. But inside the folder was the .exe app file -- there from all my installations done to the prior ROM. So I clicked it, and it launched the application ... though once it opened it did not accuarately display the current theme installed. Rather it listed themes I had installed for the prior ROM.
This is as far as I have gotten, because I don't want to go futzing with things that relate to registry or dll entries.
So, back to top: Am I mistaken? Do some applications that are installed to your storage card simply work regardless of how many new rom flashes you do? If so, what are these apps, or I guess, what are the generalized rules re how Windows treats those apps that had been prior installed onto your Storage Card?

RELATED QUESTION: What is "Best Practices" re Program Applications on your storage card?
On my storage card I keep all my .cab files and other installers, plus my MP3s, videos, docs, my PIM Backup data ... But I have never ever given thoguht to this before now: On my Storage Card, in the Programs Folder, what do you pros do between ROM installations? Do you delete all those installed files from your storage cards, under assumption they should really be re-installed again after the device is flashed?
Or do you keep certain ones?
Awaiting the Big Mystery Revealed soon.. thank you
Personally i delete the prog file folder and start again.
thanks very much! ... Maybe it's written down somewhere, or lots of places here, but i just never recall reading it, as part of "Good Flashing Hygiene"
One quick followup please:
For all those times previously when I flashed a ROM, but never deleted the Programs folder from my Storage Card, then subsequently starting installing cab files from my storage card, installing them onto my Storage Card vs the device, here's the question:
Does the system query the storage card to see if there is an existing "Programs" folder on it (in the correct path directory), and then just use that same existing folder to then complete all new installations?
Or does it try to re-create the Programs folder, overwriting it on the Storage Card, then proceeding with installing the first program being installed to the storage card?
HERE'S WHY I ASK: On another thread tonight someone explained to me that one possible reason the device didn't notice the existing M2DC folder within Programs is because I did not follow "best practices" during flashing. He asked if I did a Hard Reset after flashing.... and I had forgotten to do that this time, so, no, I did not. He thinks that maybe this caused a lot of conflicts that would otherwise not occur. He said he ran the same cab to install M2DC using the very same rom version I'd used, and he had no problem at all with M2DC installing properly. Thus, he asked if I did a hard-reset.
any thoughts on that?
mm im not sure on the why's but i agree with dee that it is best to delete the program folder before re-install.
However there does seem to be some exceptions (always a bummer which never makes things simple, which i prefer ). Take Sprite backup for example. If you go into the programs folder on the card and run the exe, it will install itself on the device but still keeping its place on the card. (not sure i made myself clear on that one lol) and i think quickmenu does that too.
I therfore never delete the whole folder but selective program folders inside the main one.
Most of the apps do work correctly from the sd after reflashing a rom.
Simply install an app, customize settings, download registry keys being used by that program and put the xml file in a user config tool so that when you flash the rom the settings are restored. Most of the apps will work, for many of them you will miss only some resident files supposed to be in windows folder but appart from that the app will work (eg google maps)
lol talk about bringing a thrad out the dead lol, more than a year since a post was made, think the OP mighta sorted it out by now
ive been having a couple nagging issues w/my Tilt, and am hoping a hard reset solves them, since nothing else seems to. i know these will be noob-ish questions, but usually by the time i figure i need a hard reset, its jus time to get a new device, but im holding out for the TP2
1.) should i remove my storage card before i hard reset? i have my ringtones, pics, etc. on there, wondering if i need to back it all up & leave card in.
2.) i have programs installed to my storage card, do i need to uninstall them before hard resetting?
3.) any other tips/advice i need to know before doing so? anythings i need to especially backup beforehand, etc. etc.
thanks in advance to any/everyone who helps out here !
anyone help??
1) If you have flashed a custom rom, you better Hard Reset your phone with your card in it because some roms installs programs at the storage card.
You will lose all your data ONLY at your phone memory, not at the storage card.
2) You don't have to uninstall them but after the HR some of them will not work because all the registry keys are deleted. So I will recommend you after (or before, it doesn't matter) the HR to delete manually, with your file browser all the programs that you have installed at your storage card. You can find them at the ''Program Files'' folder. Then ofcourse you must install them again.
3) I am using PimBackup to Backup everything I want. Give it a try.-
Hi everyone,
I'm looking to remove some of my old excess folders off my SD Card and I was wondering if anyone knew what the stock folders are I should be keeping or if it's ok to wipe the SD card? Wasn't really sure if it was ok or not to do so and thought I should ask..
Thanks!
You can wipe the SD-card within android. Its safe and wont make the card unusable or anything like that.
Just remember to save the stuff you want to keep before formatting it
Thanks for the info. I wasn't so sure as I came from a HTC Desire and ended up using ROM's that dumped half the system onto the SD card so was a bit wary with that.. :S

I think any apps that is installed to sd will be deleted so make sure none are.
How?
How can I wipe the card?
I often tried some apps, and now I installed CM so it would be great to have an "empty" SD.
Is there any tool which logs all folders/files that have been created when an app has been installed?

Think adb can do that but why would you need to know that?
i would make a back up of your sdcard to your pc before doing anything
Backup not the best solution...
especially when you "on the road". Sometimes when I'm outside (waiting for the bus or so) I've time to look around in the play store. Screenshots are nice, but it's always better when you try an app on your own.
But once installed you see "oh that one is crap" you want to uninstall it, but the folders that has been created are still there. So it would be nice if there would be a app that watches for the changings during installation and you are able to delete all the folders and files of the crappy app.
If you delete data before uninstalling the app everything should disappear.
Actually, I think its only if you uninstall through play store the data is kept.
TitaniumBackup will remove all of it when using it to uninstall stuff.
