shortcut icon to run shell script - G1 Android Development

possible somehow ?

i believe astro allows you to make a shortcut to anything

I can't seem to see files in astro outside /sdcard..

also, I haven't found a way to make shortcuts using it.. what am i missing ?

to make a shortcut press and hold an area on the home screen then select shortcut->astro
then browse for what ever you want a shorcut of and long press it (be sure to long press and not just press it or it will force close dont know why)

astro crashes when I try do that (right after selecting the file, and giving the shortcut a name).
also, as for astro browsing - i cant browse in /data, other places ok i think

like i said before you cant just select it, you have to long press (press and hold).
you're right it doesn't show some contents in certain folders but you wanted a shortcut for a shell script (which i assume you created) so you don't need anything in those folders.

a. i wanted to put the scripts in /data (which it doesnt see)
b. i noticed you wrote about long pressing it, it crashes anyhow..
update: it does make shortcut to directories ok
update2: i think it doesn't run shell scripts at all

sorry but im out of ideas since astro has worked for me
hopefully someone else can help out
edit: i know any cut has a feature to create your own shortcuts. have you tried that out yet?

trying it, not sure how to use self shortcuts

Any apps to create shell scripts on the Dream?

anycut is based on an activity api, unless another activity can run the script, it wont be possible

seems its not possible yet.
someone has to write an application which fires the shell script upon an intent, then you could make a shortcut for it..

AppCloser v0.1 released - helps free up memory on your device

A free simple utility for automatically closing applications when you return to the home screen. More details here: AppCloser v0.1
tried it, it doesn't work for me for some reason.
i put it in the program files folder, made a new folder called AppCloser and then dragged the program there and put it, hit home - then opened an application and then hit home. then for testing purposes, i checked the task manager, the program was still running.
is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Is your phone completely application unlocked?
To install it (just to recap):
create the folder \program files\appcloser and copy the .exe and the apps.txt into it (like you did )
check out apps.txt, add or remove exes as required
start appcloser.exe, and press home to return to the home screen (not ok, as this closes the program)
appcloser should now be running and will close the programs in the list that are running when you return to the home screen.
It could be that there are bugs but I dunno.
i've just tested this on my Excalibur and it worked great for exe files that are in the \Windows folder.
i tried adding appcloser.exe to the list so that after closing the other programs it would close itself...it didn't. i also added Explorer.exe which resides in my Storage card and it wasn't able to close it
Suggestions:
a separate white/blacklist would be great
add a kill all option except the whitelist
Thanks for this application.
uccellino thanks again
What I've actually done was I made the app folder as per the readme, then I've placed a shortcut into \windows\startup, which is actually pretty useful, it still asks you to press the 'ok' or 'home' key at start up, but at least this way you don't have to browse to the app's folder everytime you want to run it.
Thanks for your feedback dark0 and oldsap I'll try and see if I can make it a bit more professional when I next play with it
I thought it would be good if I press red (disconnect) button then the program or folder is closed but if I press home button then the program is minimized to run on background.
I could choose to automatically close it or let it run. Normally both buttons let programs run in background while returning to home screen which is kind of confusing to understand why it operates like that.

Unable to uninstall PRSSReader

For some reason I cannot completely uninstall PRSSreader, when i go through the add/remove programs feature, it says the program was not completely removed. In fact, the icon and buttons still remain for me to access the program even though nothing is there.
This usually happens when some part of the program is still running.
I am not familiar with this particular app, but if it has a today plugin you need to disable it through settings before uninstalling.
One thing you could do is install it again, make sure it is completely shut off (check settings for startup components) then reset the device and uninstall.
I removed the today plugin and it still doesn't work. Anyone know how to uninstall this program from experience?
get hold of a task manager (itaskmgr is a good one from memory)
then shut down the prssreader.exe file if its running and as you say youve tried switch off the today plugin.
now go into file manager and delete the prssfolder.
you should now be clear, the only other place you might need to look is in the start menu folder \windows\start menu and under programs delete the prssshortcut.
been using prssreader for a month or so now, very good app, if you ever need support the author is very prompt with his emails

go to the windows folder, then to the start menu folder, then programs folder and delete the icon. or with your file explorer you can press the star icon, a short cut to the start menu and find the icon you want to delete.

Include link for App Garmin mobile XT

First, im a complete noob. i just stumbled upon this site today and already done to my phone in 3 hours than i even ever done to a phone period and i want to thank you guys.
Secondly, here is my issue. i have the GPS garmin Mobile 5.0 software for my ATT Fuze. the files for the GPS software are all on my storage card as a " all package up file " without need to install or run a cab file. so the only way i currently lauch the GPS tool in by browsing to my SD card to my garmin folder and then launching the garmin.exe. that is too tedious. i want to be able to go to my programs and see my garmin there, but even better, i want to be able to remap my PPT button to launch my GPS but i cant remapp the GPS since its not a part of my installed APPs. so my question is how do i get my GPS to appears an installed app so i can remapp it to a button on the phone?
you can use resco explorer and select the .exe file and then menu->file->send to->Start menu as Shortcut
thank you so much man. is there another app i can use thats free? the resco app is not, i did use it but its a trial software. i wanted something to keep thats free. any ideas anyone? also, i have decided to keep the Official ATT Raphael US_5.11.502.2 Rom. but I LOVE the clock in the EnergyRom 2/3. Is ther anyway i can get it and add it into my ATT official rom?
use file explorer that comes with wm. find the program tap and hold to get the context menu and hit copy, then go to windows > start menu and hit the right soft key to get a menu and go to edit > paste shortcut. rename it to garmin mobile xt if its not already named right.
Thanks Jack. But im afraid I lost you where you say " then go to windows > start menu and hit the right soft key to get a menu and go to edit > paste shortcut." what right soft key are u refering to?
the one that says menu in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Or...
While still in explorer (after copying the exe for Garmin), navigate to the Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. Scroll to the bottom, tap and hold. The context menu that pops up will include "Paset Shortcut". Select that.
You will have an item that says "Shortcut to " and whatever the executable file's name is. You can then tap and hold on the shortcut and select "Rename" and rename it to "Garmin" or somesuch.
thats what i said... just figured it would be a little simpler to hit the softkey than find a spot they would have to find for the context menu.

[Request] Moving Start Menu items into folders.

All the new ROMS have the ability to hold and move the start menu items. I dont know if its possible but there needs to be the ability to hold and move a shortcut into a folder already present and create new folders from right there as well. Its annoying to have to go into total commander and organize all the shortcuts every time i install something. so if i could just press start and do it, that would be really cool.
Thanks.
If you can't do it, you can't do it. I've never used a rom with the drag'n'drop feature myself, but this is stuff that comes from microsoft. Your chef has no control over it. Is it really that hard to move a link with total commander? Here is my recommendation: create a shortcut to the start menu\programs directory, and put it in the root of your device directory. It makes it a lot easier to get to the start menu in total commander (or file explorer), because you don't have to open up \windows.
What the heck, here is the shortcut. Just change the extension from .txt to .lnk. You'll find it makes things much easier.
Cheers
Thanks Farmer Ted for the tip!
I hate opening up the windows folder as there are so many items and it takes around 6 seconds - every time I open it.
I never thought to create a shortcut for programs!
If I have the shortcut in my memory card, even after flash it would make it faster to navigate to program files..
Anyway, I know I said it the long way, but thank you!

Workaround for BT ROM/Storage Memory Leak- Requires Root Access

Note: You will be deleting files from your phone so do this at your own risk. To the best of my knowledge these are waste/unreleased files caused by the bluetooth hanging in connecting mode but I take no responsibility if they are actually important and result in any damage(s).
This workaround requires that your root your phone. You will need to have super user access (su) where you see the # sign. We will simply be executing the following commands to list and delete the core.xxxx that we assume are the unreleased/waste files taking up space:
lists:
su
ls -al /data/btips
deletes:
su
rm /data/btips/core*
1. You will also need to install Better Terminal Emulator -Free from the apps store. Note: This app crashes on me when in landscape mode, so you might only be able to use it in portrait.
2. Open up Better Terminal. Press Menu > Preferences
3.(Optional) Turn on Volume Up shortcut and assign: su (enter key) ls -al /data/btips (enter key)
This will give you the ability to quickly list your files in the data/btips directory. Most of them will have 0 - 1002 beside them. This is the size. If you see something significantly larger it is probably an unreleased file waste file. This is only for your reference to view the files and is not really necessary for recovering your space. Next come the part where we actually delete them!
4. Turn on Volume Down shortcut and assign: su (enter key) rm /data/btips/core* (enter key)
5. Try it out. Go to Terminal screen. Press up to activate shortcut to list files(optional). Press down to delete them. If you don't have any unreleased/ waste files it will give you no such file notice obviously. My notice is cut off in portrait mode. These shortcuts will be active when you open the terminal app for quick list and delete. This allows you to manually but quickly recover your storage space.

I love how these things make the rounds on all the forums!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=582823
Tell me about it! I like to keep an eye on all the forums, each one offers something a bit different. My bluetooth thanks you for your help, finally it's no longer sitting in the corner! Now hopefully we get a fix for that pesky connecting issue, it seems to actually be connecting but just hanging somewhere.

This only happens to me when I attempt to rotate to landscape mode with the software keyboard already open.
If I close the software keyboard, rotate to landscape, and reopen the keyboard then the application never crashes on me.
Package this up into an app that executes with a button press.

Better, package it into a Locale add-on so I can make it run whenever I enable/disable BT!

This is a life saver. Im the OP from the Sprint forums. Ill give it a try tonight.
I've tried this a couple of times and I keep getting: cannot remove '/data/btips/core*' : No such file or directory. Has this happened to anyone else? I really would like to use the bluetooth on this phone. Any help is appreciated.

Not 100 percent sure but I believe that message means there are no waste files created yet. The reason the op instructs to create the shortcut actions in better terminal, is so you can use your Bluetooth and while using it, these files will build up and with the shortcuts it gives you a fast way to delete them, successfully "working around" the memory leak, until a fix is found/released.
