Replace the AlarmClock? - G1 Android Development

I was just wondering if I could put Koushik's klaxon alarm clock app over the alarmclock app built into the phone?
If I could, would a simple adb push do the job?
<-- Linux Noob.

why not just use both? You can delete the alarm clock app as far as I know... just adb pull it for backup first.

It's a bit more reasonable to have one.
So I am going to adb pull the original alarm clock and push the better one. Hopefully it would work.

adb pull the original and then just delete it off the phone (adb shell rm /system/app/alarmclock.apk
then just use klaxon instead

Lets say I put klaxon in place of the standard alarm clock in the system/app folder & he releases an update, would downloading the update cause me to have to instances of klaxon on my phone? Or would the update overwrite the system/app version?

I assume 2 instances but if you just install his like normal you wouldn't have that problem.

Thats what I figured. I was just thinking if i put his in system/app, I wouldnt have to reinstall it if i have to do a wipe. And if its in there, it wouldnt take space from the rest of my apps correct?

negative to both questions
just because it is in system/app doesn't mean it will be there after a wipe... and it takes the same memory.

/system is not cleared if you do a data only wipe. However, if you do a update.zip or DREAIMG.nbh, you will lose your /system directory.

Sweet that was the main part I was looking at. I don't wanna have to reinstall it if I ever have to reset. Next question, what would the commands be to yank the original & put klaxon in its place?

adb shell rm /system/app/AlarmClock.apk
adb shell rm /system/app/AlarmClock.odex
adb push klaxon.apk /system/app/klaxon.apk

does the odex file have to be removed as well?

doesn't need to be but I guess since it isn't being used you can adb shell rm /system/app/AlarmClock.odex as well

For me alarmclock had to be AlarmClock.apk for it to work
Caps make a difference?

oops sorry yes it is case sensitive and since I didn't have my phone readily available I miss quoted... changing it now

If Koush updates Klaxon, would it still be updateable on the System partition?

This is done through the computer right? Does the Klaxon.apk have to be in the tools folder of the SDK? And speaking of case sensitive, would it be Klaxon.apk?
Off topic, just out of curiosity, what is an odex file? What are they used for?

yes on the computer, and klaxon would just be the name of the apk... I am not sure what it is named for you I just used it as an example.
You will also need the sdk to do this. There are instructions with the sdk that tell you about the adb
And it should but I am not sure. all new stuff but I assume it would update where the file is since that is where the system sees it.

Replace default applications?

I was wondering if its possible to replace the default applications?
Specifically, I'd like to replace the built-in "Alarm clock" app with Koush's excellent "Klaxon" app.
Anybody know how to do this? Can it be done with ADB push/pull?
I'm running JF's rooted RC30, 1.2, with the engineering booloader.
cheers, and happy new year!

adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/AlarmClock.apk
adb shell rm /system/app/AlarmClock.odex
adb push Klaxon.apk /system/app
That's one way to do it. Klaxon will then survive hard resets.
The recommended way to do it is to extract the system directory to your computer. Change the files around in the same manner as above, and use "mkyaffs2image -f directory image" to create a new image. Then use fastboot to flash that image. That's a bit more complicated though.

Yes, the mkyaffs2image tool is available as a Windows binary. I've seen it floating around this forum somewhere. Or you can ask JesusFreke to build you the executable; he has Cygwin set up properly.
Ok, time for another question that's semi-related.
Can anyone think of any reason why removing the "email" program can't be removed?
I only use the gmail app, and can't foresee needing the regular email app as gmail can check any other accounts I ever setup.
I tried push some app to system/app and I find that all app add to system/app will be alway active (as running app or service)

So far I have removed:
Alarm Clock
Voice Dialer
Email
IM
Talk
com.amazon.mp3
Sound Recorder
Camera
The stock Browser with the auto-rotating one
Stay away from sync/service packages (Im*, calendar, gmail, gtalkservices, etc) as you will find yourself with some interesting errors and malfunctioning apps. Leave MyFaves be as well (documented elsewhere in the forum); if you want it gone, install ADP1.

Deleting system sounds

Was just wondering if anyone has deleted ringtones, notification or alarms successfully? `ould love to get rid of them if possible. Tried making a copy of jf rc30, deleting them and amazon apk then installing but didn't work gave me error message.
i removed unused ringtones w/o any issues
If you have JF's RC30 1.31 installed you should be able to just delete them. Astro should let you goto where they are saved and just delete em. You may need to use DroidSans Tweak tools to remount /system as read/write first.
Hmmm, changing to read/write and trying to use Astro gave me "error deleting file"
Any other ideas?

Word let me know if this works. I asked in another thread how to do it but no one answered. All I got was the "yes you can delete them" response
I deleted all of my ringtones without any issues. Just use adb shell and remove them. You can also "pull" them first if want to have a backup. In adb shell type "cd /system/media/audio/ringtones". Now you are in the ringtones folder, now type "ls" and then a list of all the ringtones will display. Once you know the name of the one you want to delete just type "rm filename.ogg" and thats it.

You can do it all right from the phone with Terminal.
Type
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system
cd /system/media/sounds/(whichever directory you want)
ls
rm (whichever .ogg file you want)
The .ogg files are case sensitive, so beatplunker.ogg isn't the same as BeatPlunker.ogg
Also the .ogg extension has to be at the end of each file you rm.
If you want to save a backup on your sd card I just typed this before I started removing things. Good luck
Code:
cp /system/media/sounds /sdcard

In the future, you may what to do this through your PC to prevent carpel tunnel... You can download the Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.1_r1/index.html
Extract it to your drive. Navigate to that folder in a command prompt window then "tools". Once there you can run(make sure the G1 is plugged in the usb):
adb remount (remounts the system read/write)
adb shell (this drops you into the shell to interact with your phone)
cd /system/media/audio/
From there you should be able to follow the proceeding directions.
I went and did all this and even went the extra mile and pushed some of my custom mp3's to the file (about 3 meg worth). Is this going to cause problems with updating in the future?
You don't need to remount the system to read/write manually if it already has been done with DroidSans do you?
I usuall y do the mount through Terminal emulator.
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm -r /system/media/audio/ringtones
rm -r /system/media/audio/notifications
bam gone!
I tried to copy and after mounting I typed:
cd /system/media/audio/
ls
then got:
alarms
ringtons
notifications
ui
then I typed: cp /system/media/audio /sdcard
and got this message:
cp: omitting directory '/system/media/audio'
is it something small and dumb that I'm doing or are the files copied?

When you type "rm /system/blah blah blah" you have to make sure everything is capitalized like it is on your rom, check the files in a file manager to see how its spelt and capitalized.
I just copy and pasted what I did that worked for me, this won't work for any of the newer 2.1 roms for some reason even tho it worked just fine for Damageless2.1 and a couple of others but the new ones based off of Sprint leaks are screwing up the lock image and so far noone has a fix
i installed lockbot and im always skeptical of 3rd party lockscreens but this one amost gets the job done..just no music audio control with screen off and some lag

That update.zip that you linked to has 0 files in it. All it does is:

Once you do that the vanilla lock screen takes over. The vanilla lockscreen on all of our Sprint leaks has been broken. It is part of the frameworks and is not a separate apk.

Yea its best to make a seperate update.zip with an edited script that you can flash any time with any rom. So if you flash a new rom, you can then flash the update.zip. Mine would remove a bunch of apps and install a theme and a bootscreen after installing a new rom.
I also see that you got it, but yea you have to resign the zip after you change something in it.
And to the posguy.. If you are NO where near a computer, you can always run the .zip file with the edited script. Comes in handy if you download a rom from your phone, like a rom from DamageControls Updater or just on the web.

If you edit any of the lines then you must re-sign the .zip.

[Q] Blur Camera won't install

Alright so here's my problem: After rooting my phone, I started to play around with a couple of camera apps from different ROMs such as MIUI. Me being an idiot though, deleted the stock Blur camera Apk. Using a system dump of the Atrix, 2 I tried to reinstall it, by placing it in system/app. For some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I really need a camera app.that's supports 1080p video. Thanks in advance!!!

To copy anything to /system/app, you need root access.
This will be a 2 step process.
1) push the file from your computer to your phone in a directory that the shell has access to, i.e. /data/local for instance.
2) adb shell into the phone and su, remount /system as rw, then cp the file from /data/local/ to /system/bin
That should elimiate the issue with permission denied, with adb push.

Ok, run EVERYTHING between Code:, and End code from the command line. Just make sure you are in the directory you saved your backup camera.apk to, from your windows command prompt, before you run the commands below.
Code:
adb push BlurCamera.apk /data/local
adb shell
su
mount -o remount, rw /system
cd /data/local
cp BlurCamera.apk /system/app
chown root /system/app/BlurCamera.apk
chgrp root /system/app/BlurCamera.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/BlurCamera.apk
mount -o remount, ro /system
exit
exit
End code
That should hopefully fix it.

chmod 644 /system/app/BlurCamera.apk
mount -o remount, ro /system
exit
exit
End code
That should hopefully fix it.

Sadly this didn't work either. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Btw, thanks for your help so far!
Quick question....is the blurcamera.odex file still in the system/app. If you have deleted it also you will have to replace it as well.

Thanks for the files! But once again sadly the file doesn't appear under my app drawer. I tried using adb and root explorer, with no luck. Is there anything I'm missing? Btw, JRW are those files from the atrix 2?
There both straight off of my phone...that's weird cause I have removed both of them trying out various cameras and never had a problem reinstalling them?
Are you rebooting afterwards?

Yeah I am. Can you walk me through what you do when you re install the apps? I am really confused. Is there anything that might be interfering?
Go into file explorer and make sure your system folder is r/w along with both the blurcamera.apk and blurcamera.odex.... then drop both of them into system/app and reboot. Wouldn't think anything else would be interfering?

How do I make sure that BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex are both r/w?
Im not sure if it really matters on them but long pressing on either of them in file explorer should bring up the permissions and you can change from there. Do the same on your system folder just to double check that the permissions are correct
