Pay as you go or contract what's the best??

Is it better to be on a pay as you go or contract if you intend to use your phone for surfing. I recently managed to get on the Internet using my phone (pay as you go Virgin on the back of tmobile) but it cost me over 1 pound 50 pence for what I don't believe was very long. I was only looking at google. Is this correct?? I am not sure how this only pay for downloads works. surely if you go to google you must download the pages you put in for a search? and then if you drill further down you must download more and more data. Someone told me you only pay if you download attachments etc?? What is true. Would appreciate any replies to get my thinking straight.

All data transferred to from your device is counted. An allowance is usually made for connect disconnect overhead. I found it extremely easy to run up a couple of megs

I manage to get 300 minutes free internet on O2 payg, just topup a tenner a month and you get the free internet using the settings on this board, gprs too, the gprs just saves time logging on, there is no speedgain when surfing. You get full access to internet, I use it to check my ebay sales and to access this board sometimes, its also great for winning pub bets as you have access to all the info. 8) You also get 300 free sms text messages or a mix of multimedia messages and sms free. The phone calls arent that cheap but you get your full tenners worth of calls along with the freebies. The sms freebie is worth 30 quid alone. You cannot rollover any free internet time or unused sms. There are many bolt ons available also.
I also use Tesco payg, you get 3 favorite numbers which give half price calls to any mobile or landline, that works out at 10p per minute, standard calls to any mobile or landline are 20p a minute. I am going to get a dual sim holder so I can use O2 for sms and internet and Tesco for calls.

free GPRS with 02 Uk? Have I understood this right? Can you tell me how, or point me towards these Magical settings?

12. Back in the connections settings screen, tap the Advanced tab.
13. Tap 'Select Networks'
14. In both drop down boxes choose 'Work' as the connection. Tap OK.
15. Tap OK again.
16. You are now ready to surf o2 pay as you go gprs full internet.

Do those settings give you free GPRS access then? i.e. Is this some kinda 'back door' to 02 GPRS?
I'm on 02 contract with 250 mins a month which I don't normally use completely. From your other posts, do I understand that I can use those minutes when I want to surf the web? I have a GPRS connection and a WAP network GPRS connection available to me when I tap the Connectivity icon but I've do idea why... Is one of them normal cost-per-MB GPRS and one a cost-per-minute connection, perhaps, which I can use with My free contract minutes?

I am referring to payg only, I have no knowledge of contract costs and whether you can use the free minutes for internet over gprs.

I cant get it to work on my xda 2, ive checked the connection settings over and over

ive got the GPRS settings menu with the authentication types etc what should they be set at.
And for some reason i dont have "Work" tab mines been renamed somehow and if i try reaming it back it says work already exists ive checked the proxy settings etc.
Any way i can restore the settings back to orginal or use a pre setup settings fine?

I delete all settings before inserting those listed. You dont have to name a new setting, "work" is chosen from the drop down menu.

There seem to be a number of conflicts of understanding showing in this topic, much due to O2's less than transparent pricing and information policies.
First though, the difference between GSM WAP/Web and GPRS. Any tariff which mentions Minutes refers to GSM (=dialup) only. Anything referring to Data volume relates to GPRS.
GPRS is a digital connection piggybacked onto the normal GSM signal, and is theoretically up to 6X faster than GSM, and is capable of being "Always On" like domestic broadband. Most times, the speed is only about 2-3 times faster due to network congestion.
The Free GPRS WAP was offered by O2 on some of its PAYG plans, and on some PostPay contracts. AFAIK this has now been discontinued, but some PAYG plans do give 1Mb free GPRS as long as you top up £10 in a month. Current WAP GPRS charge is £2.35 per Mb, and the billing is often up to 2 months behind so if you have an older PAYG SIM, and think your GPRS is free, make really sure before you go merrily surfing!
The ability to make settings changes to the XDA II Work Connection (which is actually the WAP APN) is due to the proliferation of more advanced phones like the Nokia 660 which allow enhanced WAP, by using a proxy setting to enable Web content over WAP. This was a great workaround earlier this year when all WAP GPRS was free. This APN does not and will not allow MSN and POP3 email, except for the O2.co.uk domain.
O2 are now starting to offer cheaper GPRS bundles as "Bolt-On's"- currently Data 36 giving 36Mb of GPRS for £17 per month, plus the old Data5 at £8 (?) per month.
As to the original question- what is better, PostPay or PAYG, at the moment, the GPRS charges are the same, for new customers. WAP or Web is £2.35 per Mb, but bolt-ons favour PostPay customers. PAYG remains an expensive way to make phone calls!

You will know you are connecting via GPRS cos the signal icon changes to show the 2 horizontal arrows.
And the 2 month GPRS charge delay is extreme- more commonly 2-3 weeks. That is on an online contract- can't give any definitive times for PAYG, but I can't see them being much different.

I have never been charged, there is free access bundled with the monthly topup.

How old is your PAYG SIM card?
I think the T&C's changed about 3 months ago, so you anyone buying a PAYG SIM since then will only get the 1st 1Mb free, with £10 top-up

Thanks Neil I asm PAYasuG on virgin for over 2 years expensive I know but not being a large phone/text user then it is expensive. If I want to upgrade my phone I realise I can buy on ebay/private etc but it would probably be better biting the bullet and buying a contract to get the upgrade. Thanks john

TMobile EDGE/GPRS Not Working

I just flashed my HTC Wizard with Core 2.0n. Its a G4 Locked wizard with TMo in the USA. I have the full PDA $30 (Or is it $20) a month data plan. My GPRS settings are as follows
Proxy
216.155.165.050:8080
Authentication
Tried both CHAP and PAP
Modem Thingy
wap.voicestream.com
I have tried to put the ip as follows
216.155.165.050
216.155.165.050_
216.155.165.50
216.155.165.50_
The line means that there is a space after the last digit. When I try all these settings, I get different errors in IE - It either halts on "Locating", or says the page was downloaded but corrupted, or the page cant be accessed. Also, I tried running the cab file I found on the forums, but that wont work either. Also, when I send/recieve mail, it says it cant connect with current connection settings.
Someone please let me know how to configure the GPRS!

if you're paying full price, then you probably wont need the proxy. so disable the proxy!
and I think you will want to use
internet2.voicestream.com
if that didnt work
internet3.voicestream.com
wap.voicestream.com is for t-mobile winwap service

Definately fix the IP address to end .50 (no spaces)

if you have the t-mobile total internet plan then you don't need a proxy at all. also replace wap.voicestream.com with internet2.voicestream.com.

okay first thing is first... like everyone said get rid of the proxy.
second contrarty to what everyone is thus far saying, don't change your access point name to internet2.voicestream.com just yet.
Do the following:
Start----Settings---Connections----Connections---Manage Existing Connections----Delete what you have there----Create a New connection and enter in the following info:
Name: T-Mobile Data
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS)
Access Point Name: wap.voicestream.com
Leave user name, password, and domain blank and click Finish.
Try connecting now. If this works your set; if it doesn't work then edit this and try using internet2.voicestream.com for the access point name. The thing is that if you use internet2 and you want to use the T-Mobile mail triggers application you won't be able to as it is not supported by default on the internet2 access point.
As for your MMS settings it should be as follows:
Server name: T-Mobile
Gateway: 216.155.165.50
Port Number: 8080
Server Address: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
Connect Via: T-Mobile (whatever you data connection is called)
Sending size limitation: 300K
WAP Version: WAP 2.0

I never knew i didnt need the proxy. The tmobile wireless configurator said I did I guess I'm just stupid.
Also, just wondering, I have the Core 2 rom. My battery life goes from 100%, 99,98,97,96, then 5%, 4%, then shuts off. It just misses all the numbers in the middle. The Core 2 Rom thread is 50+ pages long, and I cant find a sure answer. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks again.

add a new connection
then when it asks for a apn use either of the ywo that were aboved mentioned
no username or password

I removed the proxy then set the wap thing to internet2.voicestream.com. I also tried wap and internet 3.
I reset the connection, but when I boot up PIE, it says connceting. Then after establishing a connection, it says
The answering moden has dissconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.
I did remove the proxy and set the WAP thing properly. What do I do now?

If you are paying $29.99 this is the internet with a hotspot login account. With this, you simply make a profile with NO proxies, and access point: internet2.voicestream.com . With this setup, you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop.
If you are paying for $5.99 T-zones, you can browse the majority of the web but a few sites are not accessible (i.e. cannot connect to sites such as www.myspace.com) and cannot use this as a modem. In this case, you NEED to have proxies. access point will be wap.voicestream.com with proxies:
216.155.165.50
(.050 is INCORRECT)
HTTP port is 8080, the rest will be the defualt value it suggests.
wap.voicestream.com will NOT work unless you are using the $5.99 t-zones (which they tell you will not work if you ask them for it (b/c they want you to pay more); but i assure you it does)

most of what you posted is correct. however you CAN use the phone as a modem with the $5.99 plan. you just have to specify the proxy in your browser just like you do on the phone.
you also skipped the part about the BB plan for $19.99. it's a trick but it will give you full internet like the total internet plan but for $10 cheaper. it uses wap.voicestream.com and no proxy. you have FULL internet capability and can tether.

I still am having the same problem. What type of authentication do I use? PAP or CHAP?

wap.voicestream.com does work no matter what
make sure when setting up your connection that you select the one you are testing as a defalt or the later will happen. Also you can click and hold the connection name down and say connect.
Lastly call t-mobile and verfiy that they did accidently remove data. Trust me happen more often than not

A patch was posted on May 9th that blocked out and patched the free wap internet. Its a pity. But even if you use the proxy, the websites that were blocked on your phone would still be blocked on your computer becuase you're using the same proxy ports. The reason i didn't mention blackberry is cuz some idiot is gonna read it and ask a t-mobile rep about the blackberry plan for their MDA. I personally have the blackberry plan, but i dont need some stupid noob to mess it up for me and the rest of us. The last thing we need is another internet patch!

oh i know all about the patch as I work for them. ya the free internet is gone but you can still tether with the $5.99 with the proxy. you make a good point that i failed to mention though as it's going to have the same port restrictions that you would have on the phone....so just basic HTML and email.
personally I don't see how they can stop the BB plan from being used on a MDA or any device for that matter. Trust me, t-mobile knows about that "work around" but as of yet, they haven't done anything about it.

It's all about user perception. The general user will select their device on mytmobile and see what services tmobile "offers" for it. The general user assumes that tmobile is only showing thm what will work with their device. The rest of us know otherwise and chhose our device according to the services we "know" will work with whatever device we choose.
While it does suck that the "free" service is gone, thats just what it was, FREE. Oh well. I'll just keep paying $5.99 and using the proxy. As it has been said before, most sites will work and as long as PUSH from my exchange works I could care less about browsing.

yep. one thing that does piss me off about the $5.99 plan is that MSN/Live Messenger won't work. I guess it uses a non standard port so I would need the full data plan for it. Unless you guys have a work around for it or maybe a program that you can specify the port or it uses SMS instead of data.

Also, I have a really low signal strength around my house. I wanted to know if theres a good but small antenna I can buy to plug into the antenna port on the back of the phone to get better reception.

I see a lot of these Roms floating around that auto-customize for AT&T and set up the access point for your data connection as "isp.cingular." This is NOT RIGHT for SOME people.
I've said this in a few threads, but I'll say it again here - hopefully many people will see it.
Not all unlimited data plans allows you to use isp.cingular as your access point. If your plan does not allow for isp.cingular but you use it, you may be charge per kb for downloads.
Although at&t has removed these charges in the past, it's best to know what is going on so you can avoid it. I've seen people billed every month per kb while the rep swears up and down it won't happen again and that their "unlimited" data is properly applied to the account. Some of the reps don't understand their own data plans.
So: here's the difference.
Cheap unlimited data plans such as mediamax, etc. DO NOT allow you to access data through isp.cingular. You must use wap.cingular instead.
Expensive unlimited data plans such as PDA connect, laptop connect, etc. (pretty much anything over $40/mo) DO allow you to connect through isp.cingular.
isp.cingular gives you higher priority on the network, and is necessary for accessing services such as VPN, etc.
wap.cingular is suitable for every day browsing/email/etc. - is technically just as fast, but does not take priority on the network. So if the network is busy, your traffic will suffer first.
I hope that helps to clear up for people who are having billing issues on their unlimited data plans. Rom chefs may be wise to use the wap.cingular AP in their roms and let advanced users make the switch if they so need.
(I pay $15/mo for Mediamax 200 and use wap.cingular as my access point)

isp.cingular does not work with the PDA Personal Max Plan. For that plan you have to use isp.cingular.

To further clarify. PDA Personal options STILL use wap.cingular. You must change to PDA Connect which doesn't come with any texting to use isp.cingular.

isp.cingular only works on the tethering plans ($70-80/mnth)... I have the PDA Personal Unlimited with 1500 MSGs and I can only connect to wap.cingular.

You do not need PDA Connect (PDA Connect no longer exists) to hit isp.cingular, just one of the tethering plans which are all PDA Personal and they do come with messaging:

I have a business account and my data plan is listed as 'PDA Connect - UNL' which I assume is unlimited. I tried connecting to isp.cingular but couldn't - I can only connect to wap.cingular successfully. Should I be able to use the faster connection with my plan?
Also - are there any other settings that might speed things up?

Great Post. This is something that I have always noticed, more so since I changed my plan from PDA Connect Unlimited to MediaMax Unlimited. There was no reason for me to be paying the extra money. I know that most of the cooked ROMs here come with the Connection Setup/Network Wizard preinstalled but I've had some trouble connecting to Cellular Video even when I enable the proxy from a .cab. For those reasons I use a .cab from wpbear over in the Hermes section that installs the AT&T network settings and puts the proxy folder with restore and disable proxy .cabs in the Programs list that always work for me. I will post this .cab from wpbear shortly if anyone wants it.

i use pda connect unlimited and have access to isp.cingular, which i use while tethering all the time. I also play WoW on it when im away from a Wifi network.

yeah i have mediamax and didnt realize i was using isp.cingular for about a month and changed to wap...I never got excess data charges, but rather be safe than sorry...I also didnt tether (a lot, only when I was in the airport and didnt feel like getting hosed $10 for 2 hours of access)

Also - can anyone give a brief explanation of what the PROXY would be used for and when? I keep hearing about the use of a proxy but I'm not sure why/what the point is.

The proxy is used for ATT services that come with your phone. You can download some music and go to the ATT portal for some special services. I don't remember what they are because I don't use them. No proxy is best because it allows you to have a less obstructed port to the outside net. In most cases (if not all) you want the proxy OFF. You only want to turn it on to use those ATT specific services. It has been so long since I have cared that I don't remember what they are.

wireless access and activsync
Perhaps not the right thread, but I'm sure you all will let me know if not. I just flashed to the new Dutty ATT rom and I cannot connect to my server through Activsync. I get a 0x80830003 error. When I flashed an earlier Dutty Rom I got the same problem and fixed it by unchecking the proxy. However, Proxy is unchecked and I am still gtting the error. Any ideas?
And I have searched and found cabs for deleting hidden proxy and provisioning ATT service, installed all and no go.

How are you getting this rate when it only sells for $19? If it's a Premier discount, the math applies it to the wireless plan first.

ATT Internet Connection Settings

Ok... I don't think I have found a definitive answer on this so I am going to open up another forum.
Personally I have ATT (old Cingular) with the unlimited data plan. Some people say to connect with isp.cingular and some people say to use wap.cingular. Which one is better and why? What DNS settings are better and why? What are the actual connection settings we should be using?
This only applies to US ATT users.

I know that media net wap.cingular is the ap that you are normally assigned when you get an unlimited data plan on the phone.
isp.cingular is supposed to be for tethering plans that cost more.
I have tested both using my Kaiser with internet sharing to a laptop and speedtest.net isp.cingular was just a little faster and it is said that it is supposed to be faster for data customers and supposedly has a higher traffic priority.
What was interesting was that from my location in California Speedtest.net reported isp.cingular as originating in Los Angeles and it reported wap.cingular as originating in Florida.
I've experienced recently myself, that MMS/SMS won't work thru isp.cingular and cingular video as well (I don't use it but read that). So I keep both ap's set up on my phone but have wap.cingular in use most of the time as it seems fine for most all streaming Slingbox video/email/MMS etc. I only use internet sharing occasionally on the road with a laptop and would possibly take the time to re-engage isp.cingular for more speed, but it wouldn't be a huge difference really.
AT&T tech support told me that they were going to really shut down isp.cingular on most phones very soon.

One thing I would add is you should modify your DNS settings to use the OpenDNS.org servers. It really makes things snappier (doesn't help overall performance, but I've found the initial connection to websites is definetly faster than when you use the Cingular/AT&T DNS servers).
I personally use Kaiser Tweak to disable the isp.cingular entry, and only use the MEdiaNet access and have had no issues. As stated though, if you tether then be careful doing that on MEdiaNet as they may charge you (but I've tethered for short periods of time when I'm in a pinch with no issues). I also downgraded from the PDAConnect plan ($40 per month) to the unlimited MEdiaNet plan ($20 per month).

With the Wap.Cingular you cannot send recieve mail using imap service. You have to use isp.cingular. There are other services that are blocked through the wap.cingular but that arent used that often.

I don't think that's true. I only have 1 connection enabled on my device and it's using wap.cingular and I can send/receive mail via IMAP. I haven't run into any services that's blocked as yet using wap.

so... what are the AT&T settings?
if AT&T is planning on ending the cingular settings, it would be good to have the new settings from AT&T

I am currently in my AT&T trial, likely switching over to this carrier from verizon because of the Kaiser. I currently have a 40$/mo phone plan and a 40$/mo data plan.
What is this 20$/mo plan you speak of with MEdiaNet, could you expand on this please, I'm new to AT&T's pricing plans, I think that 80$/mo is pretty ridiculous, so if you could fill me in on any tips or tricks you know about re: waps and networks, I'd really appreciate it.
I'm sorry if I'm coming across as noobish, I'm really not, but I know squat about pricing plans and such.

That's 100% false. I use imap mail over wap.cingular daily.

Cingular / AT&T change the names of the plans all the time. But what I'm talking about is when you buy a Tilt, AT&T will tell you that you HAVE to have the PDA Connect plan if you want data. This plan is $40 per month (actually $39.95 or thats what it was a year ago and I've seen people still quote that price). What this does give you is access to isp.cingular which is supposed to be a better network connection (and not going through their proxy stuff).
But if you have a "simple" phone like a Razr or similar, you can get the Unlimited MEdiaNet package (At one time it was called MEdiaMax, but now I think that is something else) for $20 (ok, $19.95) per month. Its a full unlimited internet package, but its only wap.cingular (You can actually use isp.cingular, but I've heard some have gotten caught and they charge you for the usage). In my experience (almost a full year now) I've had NO (none, nada, zero, zilch) issues running on MEdiaNet alone. Now taht I'm on a Tilt, 3G works just fine (and with the reg tweak I'm getting the H icon now even and nice speeds from it). If connections settings runs where it sets up both MEdiaNet and ISP, then I go into Kaiser Tweak and I turn off the ISP side and only use MEdiaNet. I then also modify the DNS servers to use the OpenDNS ones and page lookups are noticeably faster.
There is an entire thread about Cingular settings and plans in the Wizard forum (Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280993&highlight=MEdiaNet). I haven't looked at this thread in awhile, so some of the info may be dated (as it was when things were Cingular and not AT&T a year+ ago) but there are posts there from just a few months ago.
Good luck! Shopping for Cellular plans is like the old days of shopping for Long Distance plans with Long Distance companies. Very confusing and its all Apples to Pears in the comparisons (ie: they are similar but they aren't the same).

The answer to your question is the WAP. Reason being the isp, Is more for faster downloading and not the best graphics in the world. att is doing an update to the wap nationwide pretty soon and let me tell you its going to make everything seem better. hope this helps

In the last couple of weeks, I've had weird issues on MEdiaNet. I had upgraded to a couple of different roms but thought it might ahve been rom issues, but going back to an older rom that always worked before, I had the same 502 gateway issue. I played around with running the removehiddenproxy cab, and manually tweaking settings and seem to now have it working and stable again. I do think the HTC Connections settings in most of the roms will setup AT&T settings correctly now. I still go in and use Kaiser Tweak to disable the ISP one, and only use MEdiaNet. But I've wondered if AT&T is doing something with MEdiaNet in my area due to it working, then seems to stop for awhile, then starts working again. Still really not sure

edit: and this is definitely in the wrong section

ive been tweeking with the settings for 2 weeks now lol. at&t said they dont nkow what to do to make it work either. i even tried sony ericsson tech support they couldnt do anythin about it either. so i dont know what the hell is wrong i think its the username password and domain thing not sure. i dont know if this will make a difference, but i have the regular phone data plan for 14.99 would that be the reason why its not connecting to my xperia? do i really need to have the pda plan?

Just got a Touch Cruise

I am a long time reader newer poster. I am coming from a Treo 750. Is there anything I should do to this before I start adding my apps and transfering contacts? Is there a better backup of my Treo other than the Windows Vista Sync? I am mainly concerned with contacts and software. Also I am on Att I heard about the only thing I need to do is swap Sim card out, also should I adjust the wap settings for this to work. [email protected] password CINGULAR1. Also does it matter when syning new device the device name be the same? What is the best ROM I should have?

I also use att and all i have to do is set up the network to use media net and tell it under advanced to not use the proxy. It should work fine for you then. I am using Bepe rom 6.3 premium. The connection wizzard sets up right for ATT in the us except fothe proxy. you do npot have to enterthe wap settings they are there already.

Coming from my 750, I didn't have to do a thing - just stick in sim card and I was good to go. I am on the PDAConnect plan so no issues with proxies and such.
As for backup, use Sprite. It comes with the Cruise on the CD.

I got my phone installed bepe rom premium, I thought I got all of the att settings correct I am able to receive sms and email but for some reason It only has edge when before the rom i was getting hsdpa and 3g speeds. can you please take me through a small tutorial of what excat settings I need in the connections panel. I have only 1 listed MEdiaNet I then went to the advanced network and it says: turn on HSDPA it is checked, GPRS PAP authentication is checked, CSD Line Type data rate 9600 bps(v.32) connection element Transparent, SMS Service SMS over GSM. What else do I need to do? Please help

I figured it out. I removed all settings and went through the connection wizard. Also I forgot to change the band type to auto, that is why I would only get edge speeds. I wasnt sure about the proxy settings, I was supposed to checkit not uncheck it. and found the server settings and port numbers. Thak for everything. This phone is so much better than the treo 750. Well worth the money. No more square screen for me.

Out of curiosity what do we need to set the proxy to? Is this for using tethering or something else? I am on ATT as well and the auto network configure app thing seems to have set it all up correctly. Is there anything additional to be done?
