live search 4.0 released (voice commands) - General Topics

http://livesearchmobile.com/windows_mobile.htm
Taking a page from Google's book, perhaps, the new Locate Me feature in Windows Live Search Mobile can work on non-GPS phones to zero in on your approximate location. If that fails, you can easily add your location manually instead.
Predictive text is also new--when you type a query into the search box, the app will suggest a search term in order to save your fingers some typing. The app did better remembering past queries than it did predicting new ones, and it did not begin suggesting new search terms until we were almost done typing them.
In addition, the search box will now accept mixed queries; for instance, if you speak or type a business name and city into the search box, you'll see results for the business in that second location, without changing your master location. Hunting down a Dunkin' Donuts in Boston when you're living in San Francisco is one example.

are these applications available on Windows Mobile?

Looking at switching from an IPhone to a Winmo device (Touch Pro 2 to be specific) but need to know if some of the applications i use everyday are available. and at what price (if not free)
Shazam:Music Identification. real simple.
Pandora:found a few Cabs around, but no mention of compatibility with WVGA screens.
Urban Spoon: basically a program that uses your current GPS position to locate nearby restaurants.
Fandango/I.TV: shows local theaters, play times. allows purchase of tickets through the program.
Units: quick and easy unit converter.
now, are all these available with a nice finger friendly interface?
thank's for taking your time to help me figure out what all is available.

In my experience with WinMO, simple apps that do only one thing are rare. The iPhone developers are more on that path. With WinMo, you are more likely to find full featured apps. For instance, instead of having an app that will just find the info for a song, you will more likely find a music player with that ability. I think Pocket Music Player (?) can do that. Think more like what kind of apps are out there for windows, you tend to get clones of those for the mobile platform. That is good and bad. For a power user, it is good.
I do know that a good unit converter exists. I for get the name. For a good list of apps, lookup the 2008/2009 smartphone magazine winners and runner-ups for WinMo apps (search google for "best pps apps") and you will find it. It lists a lot of good apps. Also, look up "ppc freeware" for some other good sites.
Shazam exists, do a Google for MusicID, i have a feeling it is only available preinstalled by the carrier but i may well be wrong.
Don't know about the rest.
2- if it is not compatible the graphical layout will be smaller (but in most case it's all right)
3/4- Google maps or the Web do it
5- to many app on the web
D'rath
Yup...
As it's been said, Shazam, and Pandora already exist. I have Shazam MusicID running on my Kaiser on T-Mobile, and it works just fine.
For the other two, why not just use Windows Live (or Bing). Same things all in one app.
http://www.discoverbing.com/mobile/index.html
if you're in love with the iphone UI, then that's one thing. But I'll be real... damn if I understand why one would want to install multiple apps that do simple tasks, when you can have one that does multiple tasks.
To each his own, I s'pose.

the Shazam Application is free? i believe i had heard somewhere it was pay per use.
i believe you underestimate the capabilities of both the Movie application and the "where to eat" application i am asking about. unless Bing can make totally random suggestions about restaurants wherever you are by taking your current GPS location and looking around.
i feel like i will get Smited here for posting this, but this is what i am talking about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTTIpM4L12s
also has reviews, menu, etc. i understand you can find places to eat with a simple google search. but that doesnt work when you have no idea where to start.
with the movie application you have the ability to read reviews, watch trailers, find show times at each theater, location and buy tickets. also has a normal TV guide. but i do not use that often. or can you easily do all this through the internet browser or other means?
i fear i may sound like a "Fanboy" for the IPhone, but i really am tired of the phones lackluster hardware and generally slow performance, and the less then appealing battery life.
but i do like these applications VERY much. they may only do one thing, but they do them extremely well. that's why i want to know if they are available on this platform because i am very interested in getting a Touch Pro2 when they become available.
As is typical with iphone vs WM, the iphone apps are going to look prettier. But the same things do, or can exist on WM.
I got Music ID here in the development & hacking section, for free. And it works fine on my Kaiser.
I *think* you can get movie reviews on Bing... I THINK! But I know you can find them, and get info about them, and where they're playing.
But it can get you random restaraunts from around you based on your gps, or cell tower location. You can find "restaurant" by typing, or speaking it.
for movie showtimes at nearby theateres, you can lookinto "flix" or "cinemo." flix is for the uk, franc, germany and soon to be for italy and spain too. Cinemo is for the US and Canada. They don't let you buy tickets, but they provide useful info. Both are hosted on this site, so look for it in the development and hacking forum.

thanks for the info!
finger friendly is rare in winmo as of now...
one more question, when using google maps, (or TomTom, etc) can the program pull address information from contacts?
say im in google maps can i just start typing "current location" in the "start" and have it figure out i mean where i am now? and for the "End" can i just start typing my contacts name and have it automatically enter my contacts address?
and when viewing a contact, can i just click their address and have it automatically pull up Google maps (or any other navigation application) and show me that location?

You can do the former, though not quite as you describe. You click the menu, go to Options and choose "Look up Contact". It then lists your contacts that have address info and will pop up the map to them and give you several options.
The latter you can't do with the built in Windows contact manager, but their might be a 3rd party one that can interface with Google Maps, I don't know.

I think you're underestimating the Bing app. It's not just a web search. The Bing mobile app uses GPS or cell towers to locate you, and then offers local search for restaurants, gas prices, theatre / showtime listings, local businesses. It also gives local weather and traffic reports, AND has a GPS mapping app to give you directions to anywhere you find. And it can even do location-based web searches, pulling up wikipedia articles or news items about places you're near. And the whole thing is built with a finger-friendly interface (although it's still rough around some edges). Heck, it's even got voice-command -- click the "speak" button, say "sushi," and it'll list the nearest sushi places.
Bing might not have every last feature of Urban Spoon or the showtimes app you're talking about, but it certainly has a lot of power of its own.

I am using the standard contacts app and have options for locating in Google maps, Bing (formerly live search), and Garmin XT. Garmin has a sub menu with locate and route to.
If you are running Google maps and you don't have 'locate in Google maps' in the menu for contacts let me know. I would like to find out what put it there.
By the way, as floatingfatman said, you can look up conacts in your mapping app. I can do this in Google maps, Bing, Garmin XT and Destinator.
Midomi is alot easier on the eyes than Musicid. As far as UrbanSpoon I wish there was an app for Winmo, but Bing is the next best thing. With emulators and all is there anyway to get it working on Winmo devices?
I have the touchpro2
midomi is a seems to be a really good app and it's free. it gives you the option to listen to a sample of the song, search youtube or buy the song. you could also hum or sing the song to start the search.
This is much more finger friendly than past versions of winmo. I'm sure it's still not up there with the iphone as far as that goes but it's getting a lot closer.

A way to share real time GPS oordinates

Hello,
I am in search of a program that will allow me to share multiple gps 'points' with another phone user.
The scenario: My new fuze has built in GPS. (I have found programs that allow you to share your location with a friend) but I am looking at sharing with a friend but they have multiple points.
The request: I live and work on a farm, when we are working in the fields we may hit many rocks when plowing. If I could send this GPS location to my dad who also has a phone with gps (by sms is what the other programs are using) but I keep going and then hit another one-?Send it to him he gets it and then can go and pick it up. So he gets a real time location of multiple spots of where these rocks are in the field. I am sure I can do this static using points and then when I am done I can then save them and import and export to the other phone, but I was looking for a way to do this in real time.
Any Ideas on how this can be accomplished? Anything that I need to explain I shirly will. I look forward to any ideas!
Thanks,
Clayton

Interesting.. I didn't expect farmers to be playing with smartphones in the fields, last time I helped my grandfather we were lucky to have frozen milk jugs of water ;-)
GPSToday could do that for you, you can share and receive waypoints in real time from subscribed groups, but I'm not sure about the navigating to the other spot in a rural area, might have to just see how it does.
As you say, there are many programs which can share a location but real time which will work as you'd want in a rural area not sure. You'd almost want to have a heading to the location to find the waypoint later vs it just being on a map.
Hi cwrisley,
As khaytsus said, GPSToday might be exactly what you are looking for. Give it a shot. http://www.geoterrestrial.com/
If both of you install GPStoday on your phones, all you need to do it send him a GeoMail via sms to send him a particular location. He will instantly see the location open up on his map.
Thanks

Siri Vs. S-Voice Vs. Google Voice

Having read this article over on CNet Crave UK I couldn't help but compare it to the standard voice offering within Android.
To get the results of the test for Siri and S-Voice look here:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3s-s-voice-vs-siri-on-iphone-4s-50008087/
Here is me doing the same test with Google Voice:
Here is my response to the article:
Test One: Call Luke Bailey, the standard Google voice recognition on my HTC One X hits this one out the park... RESULT: Success
Test Two: Whats the weather like today? Another instant success with the standard Google Voice offering, bringing up Google Search with a 5 day forecast for my location in Wigan, UK. RESULT: Success
Test Three: Do I need an umbrella today? This trips up the standard offering by just doing a Google Search for the statement but the first result is half way to success by giving me the option to input my location (which I do again with Voice on the keyboard and it returns a successful YES response) RESULT: Fail
Test Four: Text Luke Bailey, again instant success using the standard Google Voice recognition offering. No problems understanding my Northern Monkey accent when I say "Text Luke Bailey, You will need an Umbrella today." RESULT: Success
Test Five: Slight change of question to suit myself I ask "Find a Good pub nearby" The standard offering understood what I asked but hesitated slightly and gave me five options to pick from. The top being correct required me to use my hands but then swiftly brings up Google and having used location services brings up various pubs.
However even with 15+ pubs within a mile of my house it only brings up those with Google listings the nearest of which is 5 miles away. RESULT: Neither success or fail but requires work.
Test Six: Directions to Wigan Town Hall, it doesn't fail to accurately understand my command and brings up Google Maps with the right directions. RESULT: Success
Test Seven: Set Alarm for...unfortunately due to Google Voice not integrating with the Clock App on my HTC One X this results in a web search when asked to set the Alarm for 1023pm. However Google do list this as a valid command... RESULT: Fail
Test Eight: How High is Mount Everest? 29,029feet bang on and instant answer. RESULT: Success
Test Nine: Tell me a joke? Asking the standard Google Voice to talk to me made me one. RESULT: Fail
Test Ten: Search Bonobo Apes, apparently my Northern Monkey accent isn't helping here and after two attempts I give up but it does seem to they they are Noble Apes lol RESULT: Fail
Test Eleven: Google Voice does not integrate with the Calendar app and offers no commands for it. However I can open up Google Calendar in my browser via Voice to input manually.
Still...RESULT: Fail
Test Twelve: Again as the standard Voice offering is not designed to talk back to you all this does is make me look like a twonk. However for me this beats S Voice and Siri hands down as the web search this results in gives me the YouTube Video for Crossing the Bridge of Death in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Result: FAIL but laced with WIN
Test Thirteen: What's the best smart phone? Well having asked Google Voice it returns with a web search and in the top sponsored results I find the HTC One X with an average of 4 and half stars out of 5 from over 120 seller reviews. Not perfect as it doesn't take consumer reviews into consideration however as I get a result which neither Siri nor S-Voice does I say... RESULT: Success
Test Fourteen: Update Twitter, Again lack of app integration means another web search RESULT: Fail
Test Fifteen: Speed? What is the Capital of Iraq? Answer: Baghdad in 3 seconds flat...RESULT: Success
Conclusion: With seven successes and having read how the Siri and S-Voice offerings don't really fare much better my conclusion is that voice commands only serve their purpose while doing other tasks such as driving and you can't hold your phone. Leaving me with the same opinion I had at the outset, if you either brag about having Siri or I see you talking to your phone as they do in the ads in public, I reserve the right to tell you, you look like a tw*t.
You've entirely missed the point of Siri.

Disability accessibility tool? Make the human race even lazier? A friend for anti social or socially inept types?
Please be a little bit more constructive and tell me what you think the point of Siri is?
As you say I miss the point of Siri when all I've done is compare both offerings as they exist and work from a UK perspective as per the CNET article I fail to realise how me adding GVoice into the mix is missing the point of anything?
I've not even tried to explain what the point of either of the three is. My conclusion is based on personal opinion and even if Siri lives up to what its point is, you'll still look like a twonk using it out in public.
I agree that the human race will be getting lazier and fatter at the same time I'm afraid that we have become to dependent on our technology. It's a scary feeling.

I completely agree with you. Unless you're driving there is no reason to use voice recognition because the accuracy isn't there yet. Mike, interesting to see you weren't able to reply with any constructive reason why "the point of Siri" was missed in this very fair test of voice recognition. This leads me to conclude you're one of the people referred to who likes to brag about Siri or enjoys talking to his phone and looking like a tw*t.

New version 3.10.9 Play Store with many small innovations

It will not be one of the versions that probably go down in history this 3.10.9, which takes the place of the previous 3.9.17, but, no matter how small, the innovations introduced are numerous and we're not sure appreciated them all.
We start from the section recommended for you. Whether it's app or books (advice on music yet they are not), or even if you are on the homepage of the store, blocking the slice with the Google personalized recommendations you'll notice that at the top there is a new voice, "improve these councils, "which allows us to add people you know to find out their tastes and also receive recommendations based on them (or so says the description of the function). Good theory, too bad that the vast majority of contacts proposed were complete strangers from the other side of the world, with which (we checked) we did not even vague contacts on Google+. We look forward to a future refinement.
Then continue with the translations. Some apps now have a button "translate" at their description, which basically will only call into question Google Translate on the fly to change the text in a language more understandable to us. In this case the theory is good, pity we did not understand when and when not to appear: comparing different applications, different languages, some of them had the button translate it and other were completely lacking. Also in this case we are confident in a future refinement.
If these two functions must be short andarsele a little 'to seek, we turn now to a thing you will see rather often. You will all familiar with the installation of new apps: you choose one, went on his page, click on install, accept the permissions and you will be thrown back to the description of the app while the progress bar will indicate the percentage of completion. Not any more. After accepting the permissions, and then return to the description of the app, you have inserted a new page, which you can see an example on the right. The aim is to highlight related app and installed by others, but the match as you know is not always the best, by clicking on "back to shopping" you will still be redirected to the description of the app to start. We did not find a way to disable this feature, which basically requires a tap in to install any new app. Annoying.
And finally we come to the last news, the only one on which we could hardly rely on something: it is now possible to remove items from the wish list by tapping on the icon in that list, without having to open a description of each app. It is the same method used to delete applications from the complete list of all the ones we have ever installed and certainly saves us a few more steps. Nicely done.
After then the description of the new features, I leave you the link to download the Play Store:http://d-h.st/ZZB
Thanks, i was just reading about it in the main android themes and apps forum

The Siraj Islamic Lifestyle Review - The Rich-featured Islamic Application

There’s an assumption of some people that the Islamic app is widely used in Ramadan only. But now, there’s a decent Islamic app for Android device called Siraj Islamic Lifestyle which can deny that assumption. In fact, people tend to download the app as their effort to fulfill their daily needs such as the Athan notification, taujih and ghirah, or some other Islamic information.
Everyone may think that this is the must-have Islamic application for Muslims particularly and not for being used only on Ramadan. For your information, this is the second application from Paseban which can be downloaded for free in Google Play. You will notice that the app doesn’t only feature the Athan notification but there are more benefits in this app as compared to some other Islamic apps out there. So now, let’s have a look at the following overview of this app for your own consideration.
Just before you can work with this app, you will need to make sure that your Android device is connected to internet (Data Plan or Wi-Fi) since the app require internet connection. Also, you will need to register the e-mail, name, phone number, sex and password of your own. After that, you may login to the app and start using it. If you’re already a member of Paseban, then you can directly login and use the app without having to register first. After logging in, you will be presented with six main menus of Siraj Islamic Lifestyle which include:
Places Near Me
This feature provides the information of the closest place around you, including mosques, Islamic Restaurant, Hospital Islam, Islamic Schools, and shop or supermarket. Those places are presented with photos, contact details, maps, facilities (parking, internet, toilet, AC, etc.), description and user’s comments. You can also share the site directly to Facebook, Twitter, give rating and add it to your Favorites. In the Options menu, you can choose from 5 km, 10 km to 20 km of the place’s parameter.
Prayer Times
This feature contains the timetable of Rawatib Prayer. You will get the calendar of AD and Hijri and it’s also completed with the time prayer and the schedule of the next prayer.
If you move from one place/city to another, click the icon in the upper right; click Options, and Detect My Locations. This application will automatically adjust where your current location, but normally Siraj had to adjust the time when you use this application for the first time.
Additionally, Prayer Times has the Athan reminder with a voice. You can choose which the time of prayer that you want to set up. For example when you are hard to get up for Shubuh prayer, go to the Options menu, and check the reminder of Shubuh Athan in Prayer. Later on, your Android device will alert you with a loud voice of Athan in each Shubuh. You can also set it up for vibration only, Athan only, or both.
Muhasabah
Muhasabah can be regarded as report cards or your worship record. By using this feature, users can monitor their prayers whether it’s on time, congregation, on your own or in the mosque. Through this menu, users are not only able to monitor the main prayers, but they also can monitor the Sunnah prayers such as Duha and Tahajjud.. There will be also the watch-list for fasting, Dhikr, Tilawatil Quran or Recitation. All of the 'watch-list' has to be filled by you with the real conditions indeed.
Later, you will get the daily, weekly or monthly report. Just tap the “Sub-menu Evaluation” in order to look into this report. Here you can also see the information (graphic) of the evaluation which is represented by Worse, Bad, Good or Excellent.
The Quotes
The Quotes is some kind of taujih and ghirah, or on the other word it contains the verses of Al Quran or Hadith. It usually contains a paragraph and has a special meaning and it’s also adjusted to a special day or event. For example, when Ramadan, the Quotes will contain the verses of Al Quran or hadith related with fasting.
The Quotes comes with 2 languages, namely Indonesian and English along with the Arabic transliteration. Moreover, you can listen to the melodious voices who pronounce Quotes by clicking on the top right icon of this menu and it will require an internet connection.
Supplication
The Supplication contains a great number of Islamic duas for your various needs. Same with the Quotes, it comes with 2 languages namely Indonesian and English along with the Arabic transliteration.
Options
This menu can be said as the summary of the entire settings found on Siraj Islamic Lifestyle app. There is a general language menu (English/Indonesia). Also, there is the information of My Places, which will inform your current location by providing you with the Longitude and Latitude and it will be automatically changed when you move to other places.
So, when you are out of town or even out of country, you will not be confused anymore to adjust the timetable of Prayers. Simply download this application and then install it on your Android-powered device (Android 2.2 Froyo or later).
