Hi all,
Problem with the GPS on my Orbit 2! Though so far I love it to bits really.
I have done a search here but cant find anything.. I really hope it is just me asking the wrong question. Anyway someone must know something.
The problem is this:
The GPS with Copilot was working amazingly when I first got it. I was knocked out by it.
I haven't used it much but when I have I was delighted.
However, recently I have been noticing that the number of satellite signals has been going down. It has also been taking longer and longer to get a fix.
Today I could not use it at all, even when it got a "fix" It was showing me no where near the right road.!! Have some satellites fallen out of the sky!!??
Currently it has 3 days before I need to do the QuickGPS thing. So that should be ok.. I will try again with the update but is there any known problem with the GPS. If there are problems with GPS do they normally behave like that or just stop altogether?
If there is a problem I guess I need to send it back.. :-(
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.
Its very painful when you get up in the morning and try to depend on something that is not working!
3Frog
Same problem
I also got the same problem, but I found out that a reboot solved the issue. After the reboot it found the satellites again.
Anyone noticed the GPS Fix fix on the o2 UK website..?
i noticed it ! installed it and the only thing it seems to visably install is quickGPS..
BUT it seems to work! Using copilot 7 i got a fix in under 10 seconds... seems to have definatly done the trick - only time will tell if this continues!
On another note ive heard a rumour from o2 that they are woking on an updated rom that should be out sometime over the next moth or so that will fix other problems with the serra including battery drain....

o0o - cool.
Could you upload the file? I don't have a Serra, but want to take a look..?
I have changed the ROM on my serra and now get a fix very quickly every time. What I have not cured is the slight lag whilst using the sat nav. Sometimes this seems OK but is a pain when going round a big roundabout and not sure what exit to take, as the device is a little behind.
Any feedback as to if this fix helps would be great.
Can anyone test speed lag? When you come to a complete stop and your speedometer reads 0, how long does it take for your GPS app to read 0?
Here's the link to o2's exe which install it on your Serra via the PC. They wanted a serial number to download it, but HTC123456789 worked fine lol.
I heard there was suppose to be a new rom from HTC to "fix" the GPS lag problem. Who knows when it will be "official" but you can bet it will show up on XDA before anywhere else

From the filename it does look like it just installed QuickGPS
It is indeed just Quick GPS, but it works.
Without this application a lock could take upto 20mins.
With quick gps, it takes less than 2 mins.
Well done to HTC / O2 for taking action against an ongoing issue.
The workarounds have been good, but im glad to see an official fix.

Is this the same quickGPS that comes with the stock ATT FUZE and most of the Fuze ROMs?

no, but it is the same one as the latest raphael rom from htc.
this one is: 1.0 1815.2630
while some cooked rom have (for example RRE): 1.0 1817.3430
cant get it to install, it gave me a wrong rom verison error.

itsnotmeee, you have your GPS working with this and no other tweaks ?
Can someone not in the UK\not on O2 verify that it does actually work
It could just be tweaking QuickGPS to work better with O2's towers
I don´t know if I am of any help here, but my Touch Pro came with Quick GPS pre-installed and didn´t help me from experiencing the same problems many others reported about earlier: no fix, losing fix. It seeemed always to work after a fresh reeboot, then after using tomtom for e few times (probably) the logging of sattelites prevented the dwvice from getting a fix.
I did the registry tweaks which solved the problem, however TT7 is still lagging if only slightly. This neither worsened nor improved after editing the registry.
Using ROM 1.90.407.4GER
Radio 1.02.25.19
that is the situation I am in
I have once again done a hard reset to start from scratch
I think I have mangaed to get a fix 3-4 times and all when testing, I have not yet used the GPS in anger as it refuses to get a fix when I actually want to use it
I have tried TT and now iGo
google maps got me a fix once only
Hi all!
Been all over the forum looking for a solution. From what I understand I think I have a faulty handset but it's just come back from from repairs (for other problems) with updated rom/radio. Seems a little strange as it was working before I sent it, now its not.... Same handset...
When I run Google maps and Waze they both see the GPS but it wont pick up any satellites...
Before you say it, i've tested this on the road, in a field .ect so it isnt the signal, tried setting it up manually in google maps, still no joy.
Am I going to have to be without my baby for another week?
Any advice would be welcome, thanks in advance
Hi mate...
I offer no helping hints.. but I got mine back from HTC HK for a shattered screen and had the same problem. I had to return it to HTC to fix, its been about 2-3 weeks and still no answer. They initially told me that its may be just the GPS or associated chip set wasn't plugged in properly... So they will fix it with out charge (incl. freight chargers)
So your not alone with this problem
Try gpstest free fom this page to just test your gps inpriciple excluding any other apps:

Thank you

Thanks for the reply mate. Was beginning to think it was something i had done,
The main thing that baffled me was its the same even after a Hard reset and standard settings.
At least I know what I have to do. Cant believe I've got to send it off again..
Last time was for a faulty board, what next?
Back to the old Nokia 9500 then... Sigh...
I have a Vibrant but the Captivate is basically a twin brother so here it goes.
I noticed that the Feeds Widget, along with the Market and some other apps took far too long to "load" whatever I asked it to do. I did a complete reset and PRESTO! Loading screen times have been cut in half, or completely eliminated in some cases. So yes, you might hate it but this might just solve the slow Email syncing
Next I want to touch on the GPS. I tried all of the "fixes". I still struggled to get a fix.
So I went and swapped my Vibrant out and PRESTO! Instant GPS lock in under 10 seconds. It's still not terribly accurate (5-10 Meters) but it is FAR better than before and my apps/phone don't lock up waiting for a GPS fix! Most notably Speedtest.net was the most problematic 3rd party app when trying to get a GPS fix. I looked at the "retrieving server list" message for 30 seconds at a time on my Old Vibrant and now it comes up within 5-10 seconds.
So yes, if you're having GPS problems you've got to get yourself a new Captivate. I can't tell you which do and don't have GPS problems but I got my phone from the same batch that originally came in and this new one has no GPS problems to speak of on STOCK out of the box settings
Interesting! Thanks for the update! I assume if you do the whole reset you'll have to re-download ALL the apps and widgets and stuff again? Even still, may be worth it. How's your batt life?

Yeah, all of the apps and stuff have to be reloaded but everything on the SD cards will be saved.
I wouldn't be able to give you a good answer because I was fiddling with the GPS and rebooting it so much on my old one. I'll let you know how much uptime I get from a full charge on regular usage.
I'm on my 3rd captivate with no luck. Att doesn't seem to care about swapping them out and don't really understand the issue. I've given up on the swapping and will wait for Samsung to update (fingers crossed)

Samsung has already come out and said there is a issue with the GPS and will be doing a OTA fix.

Where have they done this? We need an ETA on that OTA
yeah my GPS is absolutely HORRIBLE. I wanted to show my wife the google maps last night, and we were about 5 mins from the house when I loaded the app.
It seriously took it 2:30 mins to get a fix on us, and we were in a 4-5 bar area.

I can not tell you when they will do it but I have seen it in a couple of threads starting with the one here.

This is what you are referring to right:
Edit #2:
I was informed by a sales rep at T-Mobile that Samsung is aware of the issue and is going to fix the GPS and the compass issue in their first update.

Unfortunately I would not take this as a positive confirmation. Carrier Reps will tell you what ever it takes to get you out of their cross hairs.
Anyhow, lets hope Samsung pulls through and fixes this.
Its interesting how different it is for people. Mine was taking 2-5 min to get a fix, but worked fine after that.
I applied the fix pointed to in the vibrant forum, and now I get an almost instant fix. Accuracy bounces between 5 and 10 meters. I'm not sure any GPS gets better accuracy. May be, but I don't know. But that being said, it works perfect for me when driving.
GPS Fix:
Forgive me if you have already seen this, but the fix has been done for the Samsung Vibrant and it works on my Captivate as well (turned unusable GPS into OK GPS):

Best wishes to all,

I did it earlier to my Captivate and it didn't seem to help.. Don't know why but I got no better GPS
Hey everyone, I just bought an Infuse on Evilbay, and the first thing I pretty much did before I even stuck a sim in it was root the thing. I used this root found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1613523 (option C), and I installed a custom CRT on animation. I also changed my boot animation. I also have a root explorer on the phone, but I have only deleted stock apps. At least, I am sure I only deleted stock apps. The only bugs I have noticed are my original contact list does not function, so I got a new contact app and dialer. The other bug I have noticed if I try to use the stock task manager, the phone will reboot. So, I have a dif app that kills tasks and manages tasks.
So here is my problem, yesterday I left my town of 15k, traveled east on I90 50 miles to Rapid City, SD with a population of 75k. I got about 10 miles east and I lost all service. I was able to use navigation with GPS, but that was it. I called Straight Talk, and I was told the phone only works best in the activation zip code. I posted on Howard about this, and other ST users have been able to take their phones through multiple zip codes, states etc..
What I need to know is how do I fix my phone to work elsewhere? I know the APN settings are correct, I get the H+ icon when the data is active. I am using the APN settings from straightalksim.com. When I activated my phone, I had to use the zip in Rapid City as it would not let me activate with my zip. Would that that have anything to do with my issues? I appreciate all of your guy's help in advance, thank you!
Hey everyone, thaaaaaaannnkkkkssss for your wonderful replies and helping me out, oh wait, sorry, I hear crickets. I got my issue solved on my own.

Well...you could either put your fix in this thread so you can better the site & help other members who might encounter the same problem later, or you could just continue to sound like a giant douchebag & whine about how no one knew how to help you.
Sorry, I am more of an asshole than D-Bag! I don't know how I fixed it honestly. I did flash a new rom, and I flashed the KI3 modem, and bada bing bada boom all fixed and working. Wi-Fi speeds running 3-4 down 1.5 ish up, data speeds 1.2-1.5 down, 1mb ish up. So, its a good modem to use. GPS locks in 1-2 seconds without obstruction as well.
Well if you don't know what you did...leads me to believe that maybe service was just down and/or flaky in the area you were traveling...like a dead zone...have one near my house anytime I pass through the area I lose service...im on att by the way

As I said, I think the modem in the original package was wonky, who really knows. I know that my phone is working fine now, and I am happy. Here is a link to Howard Forums where I initially posted my tirade about ST and what I thought was their end to only find out it was my phone and what I did to rectify the problem.
