Internet Explorer 6 Mobile Memory Management - General Questions and Answers

The new IEM (Internet Explorer Mobile) that is in WM 6.1 ROM builds is quite the memory hog when running, especially if viewing any flash videos.
I suspect this is all about temporary files,
Anyone know how to relocate those files to the SD Card? Obviously, the methods for the older PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) do not work.
Thanks for your help.

Installing Apps on the SD card.

This is for all you guys/gals with experience in using storage cards.
I have bought a 1 gig SD card and am planning to do a hard reset and reinstall everything... and move all apps (that can go to SD) to SD. Based on discussions, I know not to put today plugins (Spb Plus, Pocket Breeze, Wisbar and Weather Panel) and PIM apps (pocket informant) in SD so they will remain in Main Memory.
Now I have some more questions. Please bear with me, I'mnot a new PPC user but I'm new at relying so heavily on the storage card.
- Are there any special strategies for deciding what goes where (what kind of programs not to put on the SD? PIM databases? ListPro, Flexwallet etc. Any best practises?
- Spb Pocket Plus will be in main memory but I am also using Spb GPRS Mnitor, Spb Finance and Spb Weather. If I plan to integrate these apps int the Spb Plus today plugin via the new tabs featuer. Do I have to install all these apps into Main Memory as well? Because I was planning to put these onto SD as well.
- I use a finance application (Spb Finance , MS Money or Pocket Quicken, havent decided which one) very ferquently on my PPC. Should I put this app in SD or main mem. Does it make a difference? It has its own DB with financial info and as I understand read/write speeds might be an issue in SD?
- How does synchronization work with most of the Apps and Data on the SD? say PIM information (notes, tasks etc.) or Flexwallet wallet or Listpro database or finanace application DB etc?
- How do I back up the SD card? Active Sync doesnt do it. I havent checked if Sprite back up does it. Is there a special category of apps that do this or will sprite or activesync do? Does a backup just consist of copying over the contents of the SD to a folder on the desktop or is there more to it? Any special strategies here?
- Since I have space now, i plan to put lots of music and some video clips on my SD card. I remember reading once that if you copy a file over a certain size via file explorer to the SD in the PPC, you can get errors and its better to get a card reader. What kind of file sizes are we talking about? is it only related to file sizes or the number of files transferred is also affected? How critical is it for me to buy a card reader?
Any helpful advice/experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Where to install? Main or storage memory?

Hi Guys,
I have a question..
How can i know what programs i should install to my stoarge memory, and which to install to my main memory? And whats the difference?
Im guessing that i would install important programs direct to main memory right? But because of limited space this can be tough. Heres a list of programs i use. Could someone please advise me which to install to Main memory and which to install to a storage card for max perfromance:
Skype
Netfront 3.3
Opera
Agile Messenger
MemMaid
Resco Explorer
TCPMP
Broken Sword (Game)
XCPU Scalar
Thanks for the help guys!
Which device do you have?
If it's a Windows Mobile 5 device, the performance between internal or memory card is minimal. If it's 2003se or older, then performance from memory will be far higher.
Rule of thumb for me is, what couldn't I do without if the memory card popped out and got lost. I put those apps internally.
Also something to consider (on a WM5 device) is that flash memory can only be written to a finite amout of times, so if you have an app that constantly rewrites data (such as NetFront with the cache) then I would stick that on a memory card. It's cheaper to replace a worn out card in 2 years than the whole device. Although I imagine most people on here replace their device within a year to 18 months anyway.

Video Streaming using up WM6 internal memory

Hi! Im not sure if this is the right category to post it or if im using the right terms.
I've upgraded to WM6 cooked by mfrazz. So far im encountering little or no problems with the actual rom.
I connect via wifi at home. one of the websites i go to lately is youtube because of the American Idol finals, I'm using Internet Explorer. I configured my MyToday toolbar to show the internal memory status.
I've noticed that everytime i visit youtube website and watch a video streaming im using up 1-5% of the internal memory. After I close the Internet Explorer the memory usage doesnt go down. I started with 30% available internal memory and now i only have 15-19% available.
At first i thought maybe I have too many programs running but i've check the memory, closed all the application, no good. I tried doing a soft reset, same thing. I've tried clearing IE's cookies and temporary stored files via tools>Options, no good. I tried checking Temporary Internet Files folder, but its empty.
Any one else experiencing this problem? Is there anyway to clear temp files from video streaming
Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Relocating Pocket IE to external card?

I have an Axim X50v running the latest MagLite WM6 ROM. It's awesome, but it was running a bit slow, so I decided to try removing all my apps (saved to internal memory) and reinstalling them to my 16GB CF card. This has led to a vast and very noticeable performance improvement. However, if I open Pocket IE (again located on the device memory) it slows back to a crawl.
Is there a way to move Pocket IE to an external card so it won't have to mess up internal memory so much (also, caching pages to folders on CF cards instead of device memory). I found a guide that changed the cache path in WM2003 but the registry entry in question doesn't exist on WM6.

read my Web Browsing bible; in there, I've elaborated on this. Ina nutshell: use SKTools, MemMaid or similar apps to do the auto-relocation.
I used a registry editor to relocate the cache to:
/CF Card/Temporary Internet Files
However, it works great until you do a reset. Then, it makes a folder called "CF Card" in main memory (puts content in there) and then the actual card comes up as "CF Card2" and all the paths to apps on the CF card get messed up.
Is there anyway to just disable the cache altogether? I'm on WiFi so I'm not concerned with minimizing data transfer, just minimizing memory use. I don't browse offline either, no point to have old copies of useless pages saved to your device when navigation is broken in them.
Some advice for you, I would suggest not moving the temp files to your SD card. PIE does not do well at all when you do this. Every device I've done this on with either Scchap's Adv Config or MemMaid, it would just freeze PIE.

Agreed, there will surely be at least a performance hit, even with the fastest cards - let alone the crashes. (See my Web browser bible's benchmarks)

I relocated the cache and my PIE runs great...

Installing programs on MicroSD

I have a HTC Touch Dual, So I have very limited internal memory (~128mg). But I have a 4gb Class 6 MicroSD. So far I installed here all programs are not "always in use", like Explorer, Tweakers, Opera Mobile, among others.
But those that really needs memory are programs like SPB Mobile Shell and themes, SPB Time, Inesoft Dialer (...)
So far I installed those on internal memory to avoid problems but then I tried install them on Micro SD but looks like always use internal memory anyway (cant understand why). So now I'm thinking using the SKTools move folder and content (and update registry) of those programs.
Should I get any problems ?
yea, some should be a problem as there paths must be hard coded..instead of moving using STK, try editing the cab files and channging there default installation path

But if some paths are hard coded, when I install programs in English dont work, because my ROM is portuguese: so Program Files is Programas.
