Change the way contacts are filed in Windows Mobile - General Questions and Answers

Is there a way to make new contacts always file as
First name Last name

instead of the default
Last name, First name

I end up having to go to every contact manually and change it myself.
I know you can change it in outlook, so I figure there should be a way to change it in windows mobile too.
PS I'm using WM6.1 on the HTC s620

Try this, Shubaroo Contact Changer. It doesn't change them as you add them but it will do your whole address book in one go, so it's sort of a half way solution for you.

you just have to change how they are filed in the contact info

One at a time ?

the link i posted does it all in one go. Other than that just make sure "File As" is correct as you add a new contact.

Thank you. Wish there was a permanent solution

This very simple feature needs to be included. It's 2010 and First name, Last name is not too much to ask. Is it?

typical MS.. such a simple thing to do. why does nobody post a solution, it can probably be done using a registry tweak? Im not into that, otherwise i would.

Hiya, I have WM 6.5 and all my contacts display First name Last name. By adjusting the settings in Outlook on my PC, after syncing, the phone copies the settings.

I have the same frustration and created my own program to fix the contacts, even allowing for your own custom formats and using the Company Name field. I hope you find it helpful!

if u know the anz help the man and stop acting like a prick i think the way to go is get the file name s2u2 and this will solve ur problem check dutty cabs for this file
s2u2 gives you big pictures for caller ID? I thought it only did the slide to unlock.
use pocketCM to add pictures (size 240x320) to your contacts, then turn on the option of Full Screen callerID in S2U2 and you'll see how nice it is.
take a look at mine.

you dont, there are others but I dont remember. PocketCM is free and you dont have to install to use it, just run the exe and add pictures to your contacts. Your defaut contact application is still the one that come w/ WM6.

I just tried PocketCM, its pretty cool but is there a program that I can add pictures to my contacts by using my PC instead of having to change the pics for contacts on the phone?
It would be much easier IMO to do it on a PC since most of my pictures are stored there anyway and I could resize easier also.
If you have the office suite on your pc then you should use outlook after syncing your kaiser. once contacts are synced, it's as simple as double clicking on the contact and adding the desired picture.

not if you want to add the qvga photos
Outlook will turn your great looking photos of qvga size into pathetic looking photos. Resize all your contact pictures on the computer, put them in the Storage Card\DCIM\ then start adding pictures to contacts.

Auto downlod email pictures

Is there a registery entry to make the email auto download the pictures instead of always saying "internet pictures blocked" ? Ive searched but dont find anything in the search related to this. Thanks
Have you tried selecting download attachments. Open your mail program, select tools, options. Select download attachment and uncheck the second box that limits download size.

That doesn't do it. The problem is Outlook blocks images from HTML messages by default. I haven't found a fix for this but I haven't really looked for one yet.
I'd like to have that as a default too... so far I've not found a registry key that covers this (YET!)
I suspect theres a similar switch for the "Tap to Scroll Right" function too.
The search continues!

When I try this, I don't see the download attachments and download size boxes. I am running Mobile Vista v1.3 by Confused Stu which WM 6.1 bases. Could these options have moved somewhere else or is there another way to get to them.
thanks

Ya i figure that there has to be something somewhere that could be changed to auto download. I just have not stuided the registery on a WM device enough to know where and what to change.

Hi Bill. The option's there - go into Mail and then Menu > Tools > Options. Select the e-mail account and follow the screens through until you see E-mail, Tasks, Contacts, etc. Select E-mail, then click Settings and you should see the bit at the bottom where you can select to auto-download attachments, and specify a maximum size to download. That's on my Exchange e-mail account, I'm pretty sure POP3/IMAP is a similar path, but I can't test for the moment as I'm in the middle of flashing/testing.
Cheers.

I wish it was this simple but it isn't - the issue isn't attachments, it's MS' Vista way of life "Everything is DANGEROUS, I must ASK YOU if you REALLY WANT TO DO THIS!" Everyone's asking this question on 6.1, haven't found an answer yet...

Sorry mate, wasn't meaning that as the answer to the OP question (I looked at the thread hoping to get the answer! This bugs me too) - just answering fergusonwilliam's question a few posts before.
I do agree Vista's "ask, then ask in a louder voice" is annoying (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80sWifG40B0 made me smile) but it's needed because too many users just click OK to every box without reading it! Yes, I work in IT Desktop troubleshooting....
Sorry, back on topic - anyone got any idea if MS left a backdoor to get around the blocking of pictures in HTML e-mails?
Ya but in Desktop Vista you can turn off the Stupid Ask, Ask again, Then ask some more. I used to like the Mac commercial About the Accept Deny.

Importing pop3/mail settings for the habitual flasher

I have searched low and high for the answer to this but cannot seem to find it anywhere.
Is there anything similar to the Cabs for WiFi or even a registry template for quickly importing mail setting after a flash/hardreset? Using Sashimi for instance?
Sorry if this is not directly ROM related, but I suppose it is when you want to quickly get all your emails set up having done a flash/hardreset.
Thanks in advance to any who can help?
You can do this with User Customization in a provisions.xml.
I havent even been able to get my phone to download my mail directly to the phone. I have to use IE to go to hotmail. Which programs are out there so I can enter my name and password and the email is delivered directly to the phone without active sync?!!?
The standard "messages" utility built into the phone seems to do it for me. You set up an account as a pop3 or imap and its just like setting one up in outlook express...

hello, i used tiermanns Personal OEMizer find it here http://tiermann.net/index.php?optio...d=3:personal-oemizer&catid=1:Desktop&Itemid=3 i used it to create my provisioning XML.
i then used the task manager provided with sashimi and bam, it worked, or you can use uc.

Right, but when i go to add an account after I enter my user name and password it says "select link below to access windows live hotmail account" and has a link that uses IE to get mail. I had it before where i entered my info and it downloaded it for me automatically.

Perhaps that's because hotmail doesn't support POP3. Maybe you should use an email account that actually supports the protocol that you are using. It isn't the program's fault....it's hotmail's.

Previously hotmail did work on the phone with just a regular POP account.

Hmm...perhaps I am mistaken then. I know a long time ago they allowed POP3 access through Outlook Express only, then eventually dropped that support. I specifically starting using Gmail because it allowed POP3 (and now IMAP) support and was under the impression that hotmail and yahoo didn't with out their pay services.....but I guess that could've changed in the last several years, so I'm sorry if my previous comment was misleading....that was just the way I understood it to be.

I will be releasing a new app this weekend with the latest SASHIMI release called Makisu.
It runs on your device and will create provisioning XMLs for e-mail and wireless settings. You can then import these directly from the app, or during your SASHIMI setups.
Keep your eyes open for it.
Another option is to take a look at spb backup 2. It costs a few bucks but it restores all of the settings for all mail accounts. It even puts all the mail back in your mailboxes. I sync with two exchange servers and two pop3 accounts so its vital for me to get my mail back up anf running as quickly as possible.
With the new rom upgrade mode it works flawlessly between different rom versions.
I have alson found it handy in custom mode to bakup themes and ringtones for easy flawless swaps.
Then I use bengalihs version of tiermans tierautoinstall for my cabs.
Just my 2 cents
@iceman4357
If you use vista, you might be able to setup hotmail on you computer to download to a windows live mail account and then use emoze desktop version to sync it to you phone. I am fairly sure since the release of windows live mail on vista, hotmail will no longer work with a regular pop3. They did this to get people to use live mail. I know a few people that still have hotmail accounts. I will do some diggin and see if there is a better solution.

rjcb23,
Yeah, you should definitely check this out! I actually just used SASHIMI last night (even without Makisu) and it perfectly provisioned my email account. I used the following link for documentation - in post 3 under "EMAIL2 CSPs" he shows the layout and links to Microsoft documentation as well as a GUID generator.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337
Bengalih's SASHIMI is now my third favorite sashimi (it's really hard to beat hamachi and toro). If you are a habitual flasher you owe it to yourself to give SASHIMI a serious look.

Yeah, actually Makisu is basically going to create the XMLs that SASHIMI imports (or really Makisu can do it stand-alone). It creates the XML files with user inputted information, and even generates the GUID.
I think there are some similar things out there, but this is the only one I know of that will run on the device itself, and do the whole thing.

Firstname, Lastname in Contacts

Yes, I've searched and found 3rd party applications (for other devices, not Raphael. Not sure if they'll still work)
BUT, I swear when I first bought my phone last week, I was playing around with the phone, AdvancedConfig/DiamTweak/TF3DTweak, SOMETHING, and I KNOW I saw an option to choose Firstname, Lastname and vice versa. For some reason I can't find it now.
My question: Is there an option on the phone to change this or was I dreaming when I found it?
If not, what's the easiest way to set this option?
Thanks.
When you go to insert a contact via outlook or to edit existing contacts its the 6th option down "File as" and you can choose First/last or Last/First.

I knew I saw something. Thanks
Is there a way to convert all of them at the same time? Going one-by-one for 200+ contacts is extremely time-consuming.
I'm not a miracle worker haha. Maybe someone else can help I have no clue.
amazingly i was searching for this exact same thing yesterday.
unfortunatly there is no easy way apart by using outlook, BUT there is an app for the universal called FILEASCONTACTS.cab whih adds a sub menu to your contact screen which swops the display name to firstname. lastname.
i have tested on touch pro works fine. you will still have to do every single contact but at least you wont have to edit and then select file as...
hope this helps.
cheers

Disjoin contacts

I have round 1,200 contacts on my exchange server
For quite a number of friends I saved only the first name. And this @&%^# contact app from Samsung joins all the people who have the same first name (When nop last name is saved). How convenient...
I "could" go trough all my contacts and split them. But it's slow. And every time I flash a new ROM and charge my contacts through exchange they get agregated again
Is there a settting somewhere where we can prevent the application from merging contacts ? Or if keeps on doing so, is it possible to have it save the fact you split the contacts somewhere on my exchnage account (So that it doesn't do it again the next time I reload everything...)
Or maybe some of you have already settled for another Contact manager app
It's super annoying
Anyone?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
dont know the answer but writing this to wish you luck i have 120 contacts and it was a real pain to put it in order 1200 contacts i cant imagine
Isn't it confusing anyway having multiple contacts with the exact same name? How do you know which is which?
I make sure all my contacts have either a last name, or some differentiating text at least.
There's no way to stop the app doing it automatically, the only options are to either clean up your contact entries at the GMail end, or use a different contacts app.

I use exchange but yeah I get what you mean by "clean up your contact entries at the GMail end"
How do I differentiate ? The good stuff with smartphone sis we can include pictures... Same first name different picture --> fastest way to differentiate for me. However the stupid app merges the contacts and put the pic of the first contact --> I am lost
Honestly, not having the option is a shame. That's a bad application. At the very least it should allow you to choose to merge automatically or not. At best it should leave you the choice of the aggregation key (Which filelds make a contact unique)
That sucks badly... very poor level of programming...
Actually i was wrong. This crappy piece of software also sometimes joins contacts that have a last name... I don't know what to say. I don't understand why there is no option to decide the key of oining contacts (Or simply disable it...)
