Does anyone know what radio chipset is in the G1? I'm trying to figure out if the chipset supports UMA.
Look in the Dream forum for the tips thread I believe that is where the pics were posted.
I hope a new radio revision comes out, I tend to loose my data connection even though I have good signal strength. Any one else experience this? Or is this more of a network issue?
Could it be the area in which you live in? Because I don't get anything you describe but I am in the suburb of LA...
Can the phone really be that different from the Dev Phone for T-Mobile G1?
Seems like it would be desirable model for US 3G (AT&T). No interest in this model?

lmaoo..yeah that might just be it..haha
there are a few people here who have the rogers phones and have flashed hero and other roms to their phone just cause it does not say rogers does not mean it won't work be careful cause you don't want a paperweight
I'm on U.S. AT&T 3G.
But thanks for the pointless racist comment that does nothing to address the question.
rogers roms
Last time I checked there were several Custom Rogers Roms.
Did you look at soulife's ?
Is there a specific modifcation that can be done to the custom roms to get them to load on the Rogers Dream?
T-Mobile's lack of 3G coverage was not desirable to me so I imported one.
I know Cyanogen mentioned somthing about it but I can't find any information otherwise.

Aren't these rogers roms ported for use on the TMobile G1? AFAIK, those don't actually run on a real Rogers Dream, but if I'm wrong, I'de be happy.

um
removed ... since I was uninformed.

So let me get this straight ... you imported a Rogers Dream so that you could use AT&T in the states ? umk (There are ways to unlock the TMO G1's for AT&T use)
Eitherway ... as far as I know, if you're rooted and have a nice recovery image installed, like Cyanogen's ... you should be able to (with no problem) load a custom Roger's ROM like soulife's (which I liked very much, when I used it).
Dream hardware is dream hardware ... doesn't really matter where you got it.
You may need the HardSPL though.

This is wrong, and there is a whole thread in the Dream forum about it. The Rogers Dream is slightly different hardware and we can't build custom kernels for it yet. Its being worked on, though.

Cyonegens roms don't run on the Rogers, he even has stated as much. He had a custom boot iamge at one point for the Rogers DReam but pulled it because it didn't actually work.
I would agree, in theory, G1 hardware is G1 hardware, but something is different about the device some how. It is a newer revision of the G1 and uses a different amplifier for the different 3G frequencies so who knows what other minor tweaks were done.
Yes I imported one. And I also own a developer phone which runs on AT&T. Now I think it's obvious to anyone that Edge speeds for data or less than desirable. This is simply an unfortunate state of T-Mobile undesirable 3G deployment which is hardly anywhere useful, and AT&T much larger deployment with larger spectrum assets in many markets. AT&T is no Verizon, but it's more solid than T-Mobile any day, where I live for sure. Maybe when T-Mobile goes 3G here later this year I will reconsider but for now I'm happy with AT&T, not to mention my grandfathered data plan is less than T-Mobiles and I'm constantly hitting 1 - 1.5 mbit on AT&T's 3G around here.

Maybe google hates Canadians. I find it odd that there is no developer phone with North American 3G (AT&T/Rogers) frequencies.

But the answer is likely in the cyanogen's correction on the matter ... if they can't build custom kernels ... that would explain the lack of ROMs.

A few people (PhaseBurn in particular) are trying hard to get the specs/code needed to do this. We are kind of at the mercy of HTC right now.

Are Canadians really a different race?
Glad you got your question answered though
I am confused on why there is an entirely different section for the TP2 CDMA versions. It's especially confusing considering that it is a global phone that can run on both CDMA and GSM. So what's the difference?
Does a CDMA version of the phone have a different OS somehow, which is why there aren't any CDMA roms out yet? Would it screw up my phone to install a GSM ROM to my TP2 (Verizon)?
Any help would be appreciated.
cdma and gsm are 2 different cell phone technologies. kind of like vhs and betamax. 2 different ways to provide cell phone service. normally your phone uses one or the other. sprint and vzw use cdma while att and tmobile use gsm. this is all related to the built in hardware not the os. the att version only has gsm built in and can only use gsm's network. to compete with with gsm providers bragging about world wide coverage vzw and sprint have world phone version that have both cdma and gsm radio's built in. they are locked to use the cdma radio in the usa but can roam on gsm networks while traveling abroad. they have similar os's but are different enough that you can not use the gsm version on a cdma phone unless it has been modified for it. the cooked roms you see in the cdma section i believe are gsm roms that have been modified and tweaked to work on the cdma phones. since the gsm version has been out longer the 6.5 os has already been release officially. sprint and vzw will eventually get a 6.5 os from htc which they will tweak and cripple to their liking and then they will each release their own version. also remember these roms contain both new os versions and radio software. the main danger of loading the wrong version is probably with the radio. the gsm version will not have the information to run with sprint or vzw's cdma radio hardware. if you want to load a new rom you need to use the tweaked ones here in the cdma section or until vzw releases a new rom.
It's coming together..
Alright, so I am beginning to understand about the differences, thank-you so much for your information. But I am wondering if there is someplace that I could go and read up and the specific differences and how to start helping tweak roms, write them, or such. I am interested in actually coding, or however the people here make their programs for cell phones. Any websites that you could refer me to or anyone here who is looking to take on a student?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=difference+between+CDMA+and+GSM
Nice.
Alright, I get the picture. From now on I shall not ask questions to which I can find answers on Google.
That link was very cool by the way, I have no idea how you made it so I could then interact with that search query.
They're just two different types of technologies.
The main difference is what frequencies they operate on.
On the TP2 the difference is deeper then just the radio technology that you can Google.
Externally it means you have a headphone jack on the CDMA version.
Internally there is an FM radio on the GSM versions. And the CDMA version as noted has a GSM radio secondary to it. And some GSM versions have a front facing camera.
That helps a bit, but not all the way
Alright, so I can understand the differences in technology that comes with the two diffferent carriers. But why are the ROMs so different between CDMA and GSM? If there are only a couple of technology differences, shouldn't it be easy to change that and make them work? Or does have it to do more with the radio frequencies and coming out with a working ROM that makes them still be able to connect? If so, I thought the different Radio installers came in different packages and were installed after the ROM.
Thanks for all the info.

WTF? There are plenty of CDMA Roms, check out forum.PPCGeeks.com it's the main CDMA Windows Mobile forum. smh
I guess I was looking in the wrong place...
Alright, I will go check out over there. I was looking around here for a CDMA ROM, and I just didn't see any. Thanks for the point out.
my fault re-readin what I wrote I see that I'm coming off rude I really wasn't trying to be. Here's some Rom tips once you unlock for Sense 2.1 (with weather clock and fullscreen weather animations) go with MightyRom, it's by far the fastest most stable with great battery life that I've tried. For Sense 2.5 you can try JuicyRom or EnergyRom I found Juicy's to be very fast but 2.5 just doesn't compare to the stability and speed of 2.1. Good luck.
No worries
No problem, I thought it was just becuase I was a new user asking obvious questions. Thanks for the help.
First off, sorry if this is in the wrong part of the fourm..... anyways, ya, what's up with all these names for modems? What are the differences? There's like 15 different modems that I saw in the development section. Please explain to me what's so.special about each of them.
they are named after the ROM from which they come

try one and post the results. they are mostly i9000 and t959 modems from cariers that use the same bands as att. stay away from the t-mobile modems and i9000 modems that dont have the 850 band by default, we were having succsess with the bell jk3/jk4 modems and then the telus seems to give me better gps. now we have a good number of them from many providers, and noone can know what's the best.
i recomend the telus jl3 modem. i get an ocasional warning the the sim was removed, its a bug related to the modem but overall it seems to be the best that i tried, the warning does not affect service in the least. another may be as good without the bug but there are too many to test.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 these should also work, the more people using them the more data we will have to answer questions like this

Hahahaa im guessing you're running P9? I got that error a couple nights ago and it kinda scared me, but its all good. And thanks you two for answering!
Hi,
I've read through plenty of threads (including that massive 350 post thread) on whether we have quadband UMTS in hardware or not? The answers there weren't very clear, so I went to the LG homepage, and they seem to have updated their brochure to mention only the AWS bands after a lot of complaints from our side. Some T-Mo reps state the hardware is present but the software isn't, while others completely say that there is no hardware at all.
After that I read through the service manual, and in that various pages there is only reference to the AWS band and Band 1. I've snipped a few screenies and uploaded it here - http://simkill.imgur.com/g2x
This confirms beyond all shadow of doubt that there is NO HARDWARE support for global UMTS bands.
Shame really, I didn't mind waiting it out till someone came up with an updated baseband.
I wouldn't call it definitive.
Well why not, I'd like to see more than just a statement, although my title may have been a bit sensationalist I'm almost certain about this.
I read through the manual, and although in many many places it says that those internals have *support for 900/1900*. But nowhere are proper working specifications/test results been mentioned for the other bands. If you have any information, now would be a very good time to share since I'm planning on returning this in favour of the O2X in two days.
Unfortunately I don't think anyone has that information. Only time will tell. I'm not ruling out the possibility because it isn't supported currently though. Something just strikes me as strange.
If AT&T 3G is a frequency you require then flip to the O2X.
Is there a radio for the O2x? Has anyone taken the phones apart to compare the chipsets?
Too many unknowns to be definitive. But your pressed against time so I understand.
I really liked the G2x, it was everything I wanted in a phone including HSPA+ but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I really want to be wrong on this to be honest.
Yeah, later on tonight I plan to search for service manuals for the O2X, and read through them as well.
