[Q] Need countdown timer that handles standby well - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
It's hard to believe, but I still haven't found a simple countdown timer that fulfills my (modest?) needs:
- counting down a specific time
- after time is over, sound an alarm
- if device is in standby when countdown is over: wake device up and sound alarm
- free (or reasonable price)
- optional 1: have more than one counter in parallel
- optional 2: specify sound volume for alarm (even if device is in vibrate mode or silent)
I tried several so far:
* SPB Time: does it all, very nice, but 15$ for such a basic functionality? I don't need all the bells and whistles...
* G-Watch: GUI is VERY slow, if in standby alarm does not sound. (There is an internal screen-off option, but then at alarm time screen stays off), only one timer
* StopTime 2.0: lot of features, but alarm time is ignored when in standby
* SimpTimers 1.01 (FannSoftware): Looks good, but while countdown is running, you can't put device into standby, which makes it unusable
Do I really have to buy SPB Time, or is there anything else?
Thanks for any help.

Try g-alarm. If you use the quick alarm it works as a countdown timer, and does everything you need.

Thanks for your reply. I tried g-alarm now, it has the same problem as g-watch: incredibly slow interface. I don't know what the developer did there, but it takes longer to load than any other tool, and opening the prefs for a specific timer takes really long, too. But at least... it works.

Stopwatch & Countdown timer

I was looking for a stopwatch/countdown timer, but couldnt find one which continues when the phone goes into standby.

I thought I'd bump this up to the top, as I've done a few searches with no luck either.
IS there a countdown timer that works during standby?
(I used to use my old Palm Pilot timer to remind me about parking meter expirys).
Thanks for any help!
try Event Countdown freeware...works on wm5 or 6:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-event-countdown-v1-0.html
Thanks for your help, but that doesn't do it either.
Just for anybody reading this, if you set an alarm in wm5 or 6, the device will wake up and alarm will sound.
I have not been able to find a countdown timer that can wake the device and play a sound.
I'm almost thinking that it MIGHT be possible for a programmer (certainly not possible for me) to just "hijack" one of the alarms, and set it for some minutes or hours into the future??
Any help appreciated!
Try SPB Time maybe? I use the program but not for countdown timers really...
This doesn't look fancy but I have been using it tonight and it works just fine, even when the device goes into standby.

Thanks Mymegabyte, (wmstopwatch)
I tried that package a few days ago, if you try to use countdown, and then put the pda into standby, and wait beyoud the time you have set, then bring the device OUT of standby, the countdown timer THEN drops to 0, and an alarm rings.
In other words, it doesn't countinue counting down whilst in standby, and certainly doesn't wake up and play an alarm.
UPDATE; I had used the old version, I've just installed the new version on my HTC p3300 and the software shows NO keyboard, even after soft reset. so it can't be used....

Alarm App wtih LARGE Snooze, difficult Dismiss?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for the right alarm app for my purposes. I need the following features:
1. Large snooze button with difficult Dismiss button. I should preferably have to clear the alarm by going into the menu and turning them off. There should be basically no way that I can hit Dismiss on accident.
2. Per-alarm Snooze length. I like having the snooze be 10 minutes at first.. but if it's getting close to the time that I need to be up, I need it to be more like 2-3 minutes.
Klaxon works for the most part, but it kills my battery very quickly if I don't have it plugged in. I think it's because it keeps the screen on constantly. Maybe there's a way to turn this off? Also, with Klaxon, if my hand happens to hit the Snooze button (even while the alarm is not going off), the Snooze time gets reset. I think this may cause problems.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
youre basically asking for the windows mobile app "g-alarm" right?
no there is nothing exactly like that on android as far as i know (unfortunatly )
anway i use "math alarm clock" at the moment which is also a very versatile app. it lacks the decreasing snooze and the big snooze button though.
I use Good Morning by Flywheel. It's in the app store. Has a large snooze button. You should try it out. This one does not keep the screen lit.
Alarm Klock isn't bad.

Alarm pro ver. 2 uses teh math dismiss. It's essentially the 2.x alarm with varying snooze options and math capability for dismissal. Icon for it is a red bell alarm. Come to think of it though, it might be called alarm clock plus or something close to that...
Gentle Alarm works great for me, you can limit the number of snoozes, the "I am awake" button is small and requires acknowledgement before it'll shut off the alarm, and you can even have a "follow the path" style dismissal method similar to the lock screen security unlock dots if you want to make sure your brain is turned on before managing to turn off the alarm.
What I also like is that it has a "pre" alarm which wakes you up during a light portion of your sleep cycle if you're already in light sleep. Basically just means you're already almost awake, and you'll wake up easily. It basically just starts a very light and quiet alarm a configurable time before your real alarm. If you're in deep sleep you won't hear it, otherwise it'll wake you up during the right cycle of your sleep pattern. Much better than being startled awake in deep sleep.
And it works 100% of the time, never failed me.
Another vote for gentle alarm. Really really good, never failed to wake me up. Trial is fully functional just doesn't play alarm on wednesday.

+1 more for Gentle Alarm.

Very simple and smart Alarm

Hello all,
I wonder if an alarm where user can set a date added to time exists.
I know we could you use calendar for that, but it takes longer time and sound wouldn't be good for both calendar reminder and wake-up alarm.
On Desire HD, time set up looks like iPhone (with scrool), and I would appreciate to do the same with the date.
This is useful when you have to setup several wake up time which all are at different time.
Thanks,
Lim.

questions
sorry if these are stupid questions. but I'm rather new to Android, so some things that maybe obvious to others I'll miss. luckily most of my questions are yes and no answers
1) this app does not tie into google calendars and your schedule and appoints there... right ?
2) this app will run all the time in the background unless i force close it.... right ?
2a) if 2 is yes then how much memory/CPU will it utilize ?
3) will this wake up my phone and set off the alarm if it is sleeping ?
4) does it repeat the alarm until i take action (like shutting the alarm off) or does it just run the alarm once
4a) if the alarm only runs once can u make it repeating ? i need repeating alarms! i often do not hear the alarm till i leave my bedroom
4b) is there a volume toggle for alarm tones ?
5) is there a snooze ?
TY for the App and hope u can answer my questions

Thanks for your questions
1) ZDclock does not tie into google calendars and your schedule and appoints there.
2)It needs to run all the time in the background cause it must ring on time as the system alarm clock does.Memory 7MB to 10MB(depend on the usage condition),CPU 0%;
3) It will wake up the phone even when silent mode(There is an option to choose no wake up when silent mode).
4) It will repeat the alarm until you take action (like shutting the alarm off or choosing to repeat later). You can press the silence in the pop-up page. And set the volume and ringtone in menu.
5) yes,there is a snooze.
thank you this will work wonderfully for me then
ok nice alarm system
BUT
i just ran a custom TEST alarm
ran 2 actually
First test) ran with vibrate on, the Vibrate keep repeating till i acknowledged the alarm. BUT the alarm tone only played once. because of this i thought vibrate was making the sound only played once, so did a second test
second test) Vibrate off. alarm sound only played once then nothing for around 15 min now (seeing if i waited if it would play again), looking at the screen i see the alarm went off and asking me what i want to do (IE: turn off / delay 10 min / silence / repeat tomorrow)
BUT there is nothing to silence as the buzzer only played once
so my question is how do i make it repeat ?
"4) It will repeat the alarm until you take action (like shutting the alarm off or choosing to repeat later). You can press the silence in the pop-up page. And set the volume and ringtone in menu."
Thank you again for the program and all the help u have given me
sincerely

Thanks for your enthursiasm about ZDclock
'delay 10 mins' means repeat 10 mins later. Sorry for that mistake, we will change the ring page (press to silent and then you can choose no repeat or repeat 10 mins later/30 mins later/1 hour later/3hour later)
The default ring duration is 1 minute.
The alarm tone only played once. Did you press turn off or silence in the pop-up menu? If not, it may be a bug.
Thanks for your help
Short answer is no I did not turn off or press anything in the popup menu. The alarm tone only played once even though I waited 15 minutes to make sure it was not going to play again.
Long answer:
Because this is beta software you say I may have found a bug I am going to give you more information
My current phone is the Motorola Atrix (MB860)
the steps i took to run the test alarm is as follows
in options:
select ringtone > system ringtones > Buzzer alarm
ring duration > continuous ring
in main app:
add new >
custom >
set time (set time to 3 min from now) >
repeat >
(left this alone to default) once only >
date (left alone (todays date)) >
title (test) >
Ringtone (left at default because i set it above all ready) >
no vibrate
like i said it will keep vibrating continuously BUT only play the buzzer alarm, sound once. so i have this set to no vibrate
i'll test another type of alarm and sound soon
like set a different kind of alarm and see if that fixes it
and i'll change to another sound
and get back to you
PS:
i am doing nothing on my phone when the alarm goes off. it is sitting on my home page with the active wall paper running. and nothing else and i have my phone set to never turn off screen and/or sleep.
i also forgot to mention that i also rebooted in between alarm test, to make sure there was nothing in the background interfering.

FOUND THE PROBLEM
"Continuous Ring" plays ring sound only once NOT continuously
because 3 min alarm played the sound for 3 min (well actually tuned it off after about one minute but assume it would have played 3 min)

This is a a great countdown and timer tool. Would love to see a 12-hour clock option for the widget in a future update.
Beautiful Clock widget, keep up the good work.
looks really slick! hopefully you can keep the memory usage down as it grows. will try it out tonight.
Thanks for it -- Very very good alarm.
I have been looking alarm for a long time, on the same concept, and you developed it. Thanks for it.
One minor feature will be great, if you could display day of the week with date will be wonderful.

Alarm App?

Coming from a Nexus One with CM7 (*drools*) he had added in lots of additional options in the, I guess, stock alarm settings.
One being how long the phone would ring if you didn't get to it. I had it set to unlimited, which meant it would just ring and ring and ring and ring and ring until I woke up.
With the unmodified alarm, I'm finding that I'm waking up late, and the phone saying missed alarm. What good is an alarm you can miss?
Is there an alarm app we can replace our with from CM7 or something that has those options? I can't see it requiring any special kernel or hardware.
My alarm seems to go on forever unless I hit Snooze or Cancel.
^ same here. I had an alarm set for 5pm and was away from my phone. When I came back to it around 5:40 or so it was still going off. stock alarm
I use Alarm Clock Xtreme Free. Really good alarm app. I love it.
Alarm Clock Plus: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vp.alarmClockPlusDock
The options are sick.
Alarm Clock Xtreme - stupid name, excellent app. There are a ton of options, maybe bordering on too many (and I'm a "more options, please" kind of person). But it is the only alarm that has consistently been able to get my ass out of bed (and I've tried many). What works for me is setting it to require that I solve a series of math problems before I can dismiss the alarm, and setting a low max number of snoozes. If you're getting up to run first thing, you can set it to not dismiss until you reach a certain speed.
Looking back at what I've written, it seems ACX is the app to use if you hate your morning self and want to use cruelty to bend him to your will.
Edit: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alarmclock.xtreme
I use kaloer clock. Its free and very customizable. Also serves as a nice bedside dock clock with live weather animations. Give it a shot. You can set it to stay on for 999 minutes if you think that would help you.
Gentle Alarm if you're willing to pay.
I've been using Klaxon since the G1 and never had a problem, although some reviews in the market claim to have some issues. I think it is mainly because it doesn't get updated too much anymore, as it is written my the developer of ClockworkMod and RomManager seems to be much more lucrative.
