Hi all,
A few minutes ago I was about to send a text message, but the (standard) MS messaging client didn't pop up when pressing the hotkey.
- Standard client won't pop up.
- PocketCM closes instantly after launching it.
- Backuping text messages (with PIM) is not possible due to this.
- Startmenu shortcut to Messaging/Messages is gone.
Conclusion: The whole messaging part is gone!!
I found http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com/f323/messaging-app-has-disappeared-tytnii-87883.html and ther is told it could be something with the registry.
Anybody knows how to fix this? I hate losing (some) text messages I received/sent.
What the ....

Like someone said.
I removed the 2GB micro SD and messaging launched immediatly after pressing the button. This is weird. Let me research this...
Solution confirmed.
Removed Inbox.mst[ID] and a folder called FOUND.000 containing a large number of files. Also defragmented the card.
thank you so much! i had the same problem, and removing the sd card worked! makes no sense to me
This folder is like a shortcircuit - but in software. it tries to read that annoying folder and when it can't it's stuck there and can't go on reading everything else.

Hi
The O2 Active rubbish that comes on the XDA IIs allows you to go straigh to your pop3 inbox via a link in its menu. When I use the hardware email button on the front, it starts up inbox, but it aint my pop3 inbox its the default outlook inbox.
Is there any way of assigning custom actions to a hardware button? Such that pressing the email button pulls up pocket outlook pointing at my pop3 inbox??
Also, whats the best registry editor prog for windows mobile 2003 devices?

Found this: http://smartphonedn.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2311&sid=792bf7b2b0944c610a5f683878c821e8
But was hoping not to have to write a bl00dy launcher just to get it to point at my inbox!

Sorted for anyone who is interested
Hi
Sorted this. For anyone whos interested:
Use activesync to copy the file \Windows\AppButtons\Messaging.lnk to your PC. Edit the file with notepad. You could also edit it on the device, but I prefer a decent keyboard!!
The Messaging.lnk file will read something like:
19#"\Windows\tmail.exe"
Change it to read something like
19#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "ServiceName"
The number on the front (in my case #19) should be kept the same as it is currently on your device.
ServiceName could be: Text, MMS, MyPopAcc, blah blah.
There are a load of parameters for tmail.exe by the looks of it. One site that claimed to list them was down/dead.
Save the modified file and copy it back to your device. Now when you hit the 'email' hardware button you'll get the service you mentioned as a default.
You can also stick -attatch on the end i.e:
19#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "ServiceName" - attatch
But I found that this did nothing with email. Maybe with MMS etc.
If anyone knows any of the other commands for tmail, pls post!?
Nigel
If, after changing the file in App Buttons it still launches the messaging pointing at the wrong folder, do the following:
Close the messaging app (completely) from settings --> system --> memory --> Running Programs.
Then goto Settings --> Personal --> Buttons, and change button 4 from messaging to some other program. Tap OK, use the messaging button to start that other program, quit said program, go back into Buttons, and change button 4 back to messaging. Try to launch messaging.
It must cache the old info somehow.
Nigel
i believe you'll find the short cuts is set in the registry and doesn't use the program thats selected on the buttons controle pannel item
Nope, it definately uses the stuff in appbuttons! Perhaps these get read and copied to the registry, dunno, but changing the prog in the appbutton shortcut changes what gets launchen when you hit the hardware button.

And, if you want to delete the entire crappy outlook/activesync account try removing the appropriate folder (dunno what it's called now, lol) from:
LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Inbox/Svc/
edit - Incidentally, the new i-mate ROM always starts the messaging client in the 'last viewed' account anyway.
Chris.
LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Inbox/Svc/

Dont trash the outlook key in here. If you do then you will indeed, loose 'outlook' folder in the inbox app (good!), but as a side effect, sms notify will also stop working (unit will not make noise and display part of message when sms received) (bad!)

19#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "Text"
Worked first time for me - takes me straight to my SMS inbox
Cheers!!!!!
For a while now my universal has been doing really strange when it comes to seeing my text messages. All the folders of "text messages" have disappeared, so no starting a message, saving it to drafts and retrieving it, and I only get a folder called IPM.root. Every once and a while, my inbox will reappear when I press the message-key on my keyboard, but if I want to browse folder, to go to email for instance, I get IPM.root again and no messages.
I've tried various things, like installing the trial of Flexmail, but that did not help, I couldn't see anything. Interestingly, Pocketbreeze is able to pick up my inbox messages in the tab. I've been looking around the "windows" folder, but haven't found any easy solutions. I figure something went wrong in the system, but I'm not a programmer that can dive into the registry and write code.
Anyone have any ideas? All help would be welcome.
Thanks
Today I received sms form my friend. Nothing special - alert appeared, I clicked "Go to". And then... There was no chat history (I had pretty long chat with my friend), only one "link" (blue underlined label): "View older messages...". When I clicked on it (I thought chat was too long for cache, but I have longer working good) something started mixing and flashing on screen and now I had EMPTY all boxes (inbox, sent, outbox). When I killed (with task manager) Messaging app I couldn't run it again...
Luckly I made backup (with SPB Backup) this morning, so I had many chances to try to repair it. I discovered, that when I entered that chat (with "View older messages") and then I click OK, not close or X, this same happends - I lost my messages and cannot run Messaging app.
I'm fighting with it for about 4 hours now. I recovered morning backup about 20 times... On the other forum I've found, that messages are kept in "\cemail.vol". I noticed, that this file gets smaller (2-3 times) after this situation... I also tried deleting it (it's pretty hard, because file is protected, but I can do it with mortscript added to startup) without result - I still had all my messages, and entering that one chat was causing failure.
Does anybody have idea what could I do? I know, Hard Reset, but I'd like to keep my messages. I tried Jeyo Mobile Companion and other software to backup my smses, but Palm has teaked OS, and none of these apps can see my messages. At least I'd like to export it to txt file to read them on pc/ppc.
Can anybody hepl me, please?
Best regards,
Milosz
PS
I won't do HR now, waiting for solution and watching if other chats are "good"...
No chance i think. As you have said, the Palm Treo handles SMS-Messages not in the standard way. For the future you can try "SMS forwarder & archiver" from thbi. With SMSForwarder you can redirect your sms-messages to Outlook Notes. The Program ist only available in german in the moment.
Look here: http://www.thbi.de/de/software/smsforwarderarchiver/index.html

Thanks thbi for your answer.
Is there way to export (to any form) my messages? I decided to purge all messages from my Treo but I'd like to hve copy (copy to read them, not backup).
Where does Treo store messages? In what file?
I made HR and I'd like to restore my backup (SPB Backup) but except that file. I tried resoring everything except databases, but I have my messages... And still having this same problem...

Hi,
I had the same issue here. Later it turned out that the application has completely disappeared from the device. It wasn't there even after a hard reset so I had to flush the ROM with a new one.

I have the same problem. Thought it was related to Flexmail. So I uninstalled that, but starting \windows\tmail.exe still does not do anything. It is there, but it does not start at all.
Same for starting mailAccountRepair.exe. It does not do anything either.

I had forgotten that I had recently changed messages to my sd card. Killed the directory...and all is well.
Chas
Thanks Foxmark!
Thank god for this topic...
I was really worried when I found that my mail/text wouldn't start anymore. The trick with the renamed attachment folder worked for me too. Weird though, that selecting a perfectly valid option kills the app all together.
this is slightly off topic, but still I hope you can help me.
my pocket outlook works as expected, but every 3rd party app I try for sending SMS silently fails (it claims success and moves the messages to "sent", but they never leave my device).
A knowledge base article I found for flexmail suggests that it's a problem with tmail.exe. ( http://kb.webis.net/questions/22/SMS+does+not+send+in+FlexMail )
Does anyone know anything I can do about it short of flashing to another rom?
solved!!
I got the same problem. only renaming the file cemail.vol in root folder, which contains email settings could allow the tmail to show up!!!
Hey everyone,
I've wondering this for a long time and couldn't find a solution to my problem. I have samsung i780 and have upgraded it to windows mobile 6.1. It comes with the SMS displayed as a chat conversation, which is neat. I want to backup all these conversations, as they are.
When I try most SMS backup software,(like iMobile SMS backup or Godswmobile SMS transfer) they backup all the messages, but they don't save it in a conversation way. They split them into sent or received smses, and its really hard to make sense of things and its tiresome.
Is there any software that can save the entire conversation as they are displayed in wm6.1? (i.e sent-received-sent-received etc)
Or at least someone can think of in this way:
In the conversation window, I can select all, and then copy the messages to Microsoft word or Note. The problem is, it shows very few messages at a time(as the screen is small, so only like 7 or 8 are displayed at a time), and I have to keep clicking on 'Older' to go to the very first sms, which is like a 1000 click before. And its tiresome to copy/paste it in the word, and if one small error, you are pushed back to the very recent sms chat.
Cant I just access the main html/xml file on the mobile where all of this is stored? Anyone knows how to retrieve the file where all your SMS chat/conversation is saved?
Thanks
Okay, I found the software.
Jeyo Software is the one. God, I wish I had known such a software existed before. Its just beautiful.
One more thing, any idea how to restore contacts that were saved as .xml?
Thankx
