AT&T Tilt Cab File Help - General Questions and Answers

I have an AT&T tilt device and have replaced the phone skin on my device by editing the images on the phone. I can manually put the rebuilt files back on the phone without error. Everything works fine. I'v created a cab file install, to change the images in a more automated fashion. This also is working; however, the install is then recorded by the device and with each following install I'm warned of the already existing app. Keep in mind I'm not adding or removing any files just overwriting them. My questions are as follows.
Is there any way to install the files without the device recording the install?
Is there a way to supress the warning messages about the already installed software.
Is there a way to prompt the user to restart the device after an install.

i have never done these things myself (except removing the warning through a reg edit)
but they may be possible through "cab manager" here

I am using cab manager to create the cab files, I guess I was hoping someone with more experance with it could point me in the right direction.

Cab-file creation question.

Hi,
I have a question. I have for example SPB Mobiele Shell. We all now this has to be installed via a PC and i needs a serial to install. I have the program and the serial and i would like to make a cab-file of this 2. I have a program to make cab-files, WinCE CAB Manager. Can anyone explain to me how i can do this? I like to have this on my SD-card and like to install it from there in case of emergency's. I hope someone can help me with this.
Thx

can be renamed to zip and one can out the cab files
give it a try

Tried that but no luck. I think this is not what i mean. I would like to turn this exe into a CAB and the key included. So when i install the Cab i don't have to register.
one would think the program maker took precautions to make that impossible otherwise your cab could be distributed as a pretty easy free version
you can try to single out what files it depend
on and make a cab file from cratchs
and if the exe or dll files got alter when the serial was given
that cab would be reg'd
otherwise you would have to find out what registries was altered in the
serial process and make a reg which which did those alterations
and get the cab file to run it
Most installations that require you to install through activesync end up leaving a cab file behind. Check Program Files\Activesync\SPB... for the cab file. If it is not there restart the installation but after you have executed the setup file leave it alone and search for the cab file again. I hope this is what you were looking for
ALL exe that install via activesync have a cab, some are hidden in the profiles temporary files, some auto-delete once installed, so leave the application hanging in the install and do a search for recent files and sort by date/time (remember to allow it to scan hidden and system folders). a lot go into the activesync directory, some go into program files, i have even found some that go into the internet explorer temp files, install, and then delete themselves. The most common hiding place is your computers profile temp folder --- typically found under
C:\Documents and Settings\PROFILE\Local Settings\Temp
just dig around, its not to difficult once you find the 3 most basic hiding places.
good luck.

You can simply download the CAB files from SPB site directly.

I have run into a similar situation where my installation was failing due to the huge size of a CAB file.
In my case, the size of the CAB was nearly 23mb and the free storage left was around 26mb. This made the installer fail as it ran out of space midway during the install.
I know one thing for sure was that the PC installers (Exes that would run on the PC that would extract the CAB on the device) would extract the CABs and put them in \windows\appmgr\install folder and would trigger the installer on the device.
So during my second attempt, when the device prompted for installation location "device or storage card", I opened up the explorer on the device (guess you can do the same thing with Windows Explorer since your would stay connected over USB using Activesync) and went into \windows\appmgr\install folder and made a copy of the cab to the storage card (you can copy to your PC as well).
Exited the installer and then installed the cab from the storage card and the installation went fine.
Not sure about how the SPB apps work since there are two options during the PC install. Trail or Registered version. Based on the option chosen, it would either extract the necessary CAB (either trial or registered). I hope it creates a "Registered" version of the app in the CAB after you follow the above steps.
Hope this helps.
PS: I wish that the standard install location on the device "\windows\appmgr\install" be changed to the storage card by some tweaks. So far not successful in finding/getting one.

Unlock help really needed

Hello people,
I bought an Imate SP5 from ebay and its from Orange. Now I need to application unlock it.
I know I know, first thing you will say is search older topics, which I did and its driving me crazy, here are the things I have already tried and nothing worked-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330291
In archive three files.
The names begin with 1,2,3
In this order start all three
Attached Files
File Type: zip HTC.Device.Software.Unlock.zip
http://robertpeloschek.blogspot.com/2006/03/howto-application-unlock-your-windows.html
1) Simply put the *.zip file with the regeditSTG.exe in it with ActiveSync into a folder on your phone (but not onto the memory card).
2) Unzip the file with the *.zip program that comes with your phone.
3) Now start regeditSTG.exe and change the following Registry Keys...
I even downloaded an external registry editor and manged to change the registry values but it still did not unlock the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352749&highlight=application+unlock
Download this application.
1: Run program htcunlock cvs on PC
2: Find program that is created on your phone on the startmenu in on device
3: Run exe and cross fingers (It changes settings in registry, wait for the Smiley!)
4: Powerdown and Powerup!
And any other SPV Unlock applications. But they all fail since its pretty tightly locked. I can't run any third party applications.
I think the only thing left is maybe do a ROM update but I have no idea which one to use and how to go about doing it.
Please advise me on what I can do or send me in the right direction. I will be really grateful!
Thanks.
OK, I don't know what was it, but I tried running SPV Services and it ran successfully and let me set the SuperCID and I was able to update the ROM.
So I guess one of those earlier methods did work!
Thanks anyway and just want to say that I really appreciate the members of the community that work so hard to make our phones much better and more useful.
Here is a big vote of THANKS for you guys!

Help a budding cook please: Problem with provxml files not running

I have been working on a rom based on the rogers 1.83 release.
I hit a snag during a recent change. I was replacing the .netcf 2.0 to .netcf 3.5 and SqlCeMobile 3.0 to SqlCeMobile 3.5.
My problem is it looks like none of the .provxml files are running after hard boot. (Did a second hard boot after I each flash test.)
If I cold boot the phone it loads fine and runs the configuration files to load the themes and cabs and then reboots. I have the SDAutorun installed and that also seems to run then reboot (i do not have a sdconfig.txt defined on storage card.)
To try and debug
I did a test as suggested in the uc thread:
I took an original provxml file (mxipupdate_oemoperators_105.provxml), renamed it to _setup.xml. It loads in the browser fine.
Ran this command to make it a test cab file.
"cabarc n test.cab _setup.xml" (is this syntax correct?)
ran it on the phone but install is unsuccessful.
Can someone tell me if either app plays in the running of the .provxml files or if not what program run it? The configuration routines run fine for loading the startup cabs, themes etc.
Any other hints as to why none of the provxml files run? I could roll it back and start over but it would be great if someone has a suggestion.
Thanks for whatever suggestions come my way.
well....all i can say is...your probably in for many trial and errors with this issue. I'll try my best to explain this to you. I myself had this very same issue when 1st cooking kaiser roms. 1st of all, make sure your running the latest kitchen. 2nd, try to get an understanding of how the xml\provxml are structured. Provxml and .xml files are very sensative to changes made in the rom. You need to make sure that files in the rom and the referenced files in provxml and xml are edited accordingly. for example: If you delete a .wma file that has been called up and placed into a specific folder by the .provxml/xml file, then you need to make sure you edit out the instructions in the xml\provxml. If you dont then the xml\provxml file will still try looking for the referenced file that you deleted and once it cannot be found then, the customizations stops and leaves you with an incomplete customization setup! Hopefully this will help you.
provxml's not executing
Thanks for responding. As a test I put back the original provxml files. My changes were minor anyways, mostly just changing some of the default values (such as renaming rogers.gif to animated.gif).
Anyhow same result with the originals.
Maybe as a test i will try removing all but one provxml file and see if it runs. if not then perhaps I didnt get the .net3.5 installed correctly. I havent been using the kitchens directly, just baseing the add-ons from the packages. This has worked well until recently.
Last night I re-did the whole upgrading/stripping of the rom from scratch with the same result so at least i am consistent hehe.

cab uninstallation cache?? retrieving in-use system dll

If someone installs a cab that overwrites a system dll but makes a copy of the dll somewhere to restore when the time comes to uninstall that application, where would I find that copy? I am having a heck of a time trying to copy a stock dll from my phone. I can overwrite the dll when I install the app and when I uninstall it the old one is back. the stock one is 14k and the other is 20k. they are different files altogether. I thought maybe if I could get at the file while it was stored away in the cab manager then I could retrieve the file and life could go on. I can't just copy the file with activesync - it says access denied. I try to copy it with total commander on the device and that does not work. I even wrote a mortscript to copy the file and that did not work either. I think it is because the file is in use - it's the file that controls the data connection. I tried shutting off the data connection but still cannot get to it. can anyone offer any tips?
another Idea might be to include mortscript as an OEM and then execute the script that copies the file during autorun right after the rom is flashed?
thanks all.
edit: same result when trying to copy the dll from a stock sprint, touch pro, custom rom sprint tp, or custom rom verizon tp

a question regarding removing programs. please help

after i delete certain apps i downloaded sometimes they leave behind a file that cant be deleted no matter what i do. for example i downloaded PointUI home but didnt like it so i deleted it using add/remove programs in system settings. everything was deleted except for a small file called 2001. it wont delete and ive tried everything. until i find a way to do so it still shows up in add/remove programs. i have 4 such apps that wont go away because of that same problem. i have an htc snap on sprint running windows mobile 6.1 if that helps any. im stumped! any help would be greatly appreciated
try SKTools....
i have sktoolslite but im unsure if itll let me delete them. i had issues deleting those programs and sktoolslite deleted most of those files except for that one file. i look in the windows folder under app manager and the folders for said apps are still there with that one stubborn file in each folder. again. any help would be appreciated
I don't know what those files are, but if you test cabs frequently, then sk tools is a good way to install them (use the cab manager, select install w/ sk tools). It does a better job of removing programs (go to installed programs, do a deep scan and uninstall).
For now, you may fix the problem by using the installed programs tool and removing uninstall info (if the apps appear there). To get rid of the files in \windows, try checking for replaced rom files and restoring to original. You may need to add the proper extensions in settings.
it keeps saying that the file is a system file and if deleted the phone wont work properly. when i try to delete anyway it tells me i cant . access is denied. be certain that the program is not write protected and not currently in use. before that it would say problem deleting file
bump. anyone else experience something similar? if so then how did you deal with it?
