Powermonkey - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Accessories

Hello everyone,
i have found in Internet a very interesting product to resolve the problem of our battery. As the title it is powermonkey by powertraveller, a portable charger.
The problem is that the powermonkey-eXplorer has an output Voltage from 4.5 to 5.5 V and a Max Current of 700mA.
Because of the HTC adapter is 5.5 V and 1 A, i was wondering if it would work with the diamond.
My suorce of doubt is that i don't think that the usb is able to work at that Voltage and Current.
So is there someone that has tecnical knowledges to say if it would work.
Thanks for the answers and hope to have proposed and interesting product.
Bye

I bought powermonkey explorer in the summer and I love it!
It is great for diamond, and every other device also.
If you buy one with solar charger, it isnt much of use if you dont live in sunny country or leave it charge always in car.
It was great though at Bulgaria charging my ipod, never had to use any other charger. And ofcourse you can charge powermonkey with usb or other ways.
I recommend it, even if it is little pricey.
It seems very tough and resisted some water and sand, hot weather.

tunppi how long does it takes to get fully charged?

I have just ordered one of these, I was going to get an extended battery, but love the way the Diamond is so thin, anyway this can also charge my PSP as well.
Will give a review once recieved

thanks... I even i'd like to know if we need for the diamond a special tip or we can use the standard miniusb that is included.
Bye

Anyone ever tried this?

As a external powersupply, it says that the capacity is 12000 MAh so enough for 12 charges, or do I make a mistake somewhere?
It seems that a miniUSB connection is suplied whit it so I shouldn't now why it wouldn't do the job and the size is (for me) acceptable with almost 3x3x0,5 inch, I mean for tracking at locations whitout electricity it could keep your GPS going.

USB Charging
Not sure about how many times it would charge your diamond...but it looks like it has a Female USB connector so any USB cable could be plugged into it to charge ANY device...if your device allows USB charging that is.

12,000Mah!?!
Doubt it, must have been some serious squashing to get that much juice in there!
My laptop battery is twice the size of that and has 5100Mah capacity. Would be great to be able to charge it from that thing!
Ill just ordered
I just ordered the battery and as soon as it arrives I will write a review of it.
Willem
I don't think it'll work. There were some user reviews on similar charger saying it won't charge their ppc's through USB.

your laptop battery is also higher voltage, probably 12V.
think of the AA-size NiMh cells, the best ones are 1.2V 2800mAh.. two of those aren't close to the size of a laptop battery and yet they have higher mAh.
but you're right, 12000 mAh in that thing is utterly impossible
edit; anyone tried this?
http://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-USB-Charger-Version-2.0/
edit again; this seems more like a real product, but it's larger than the actual diamond is. not too convenient.
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=4125&t_mode=des
late edit; if a computer usb connection is too weak to charge the diamond, shouldn't it be possible to solder a cable that connects the diamond to two usb ports simultaneously?

I have one of those crummy double A chargers from energiser i got from a friend and using the mini usb included with it, the phone does indeed charge but only when its off. When its on the power its using makes the battery pack redundant, but thats for my crappy charger. I think this should work, and if not it would work for another phone or device.

I made a small calculation my 2000MAh is in size 40X35X10mm =14000mm3
The size of the 12000MAh is 74,93X74,93X14,986mm=84138,9704314
84138,9704314/14000=6,0099264593857142857142857142857
6,0099264593857142857142857142857 X 2000MAH (which is the size of my battery)=12019,85291877142857142857142857
Acoording this caluculation it should be physical possible I just don't now how much cell it has and neather or by just doubling the size you can double the capacity aswell.

That's true for another Li-Io-charger which I bought from DealExtreme. From what I can see, they don't check their inventory very thoroughly for function and quality. Most of the stuff is just fine, but there is also some junk - and my Li-Io-charger was among it.
Since they advertise it only for the PSP, I can imagine that it will not offer the high current to charge a working Touch Diamond.
Have fun!

Do you now howmuch is the power use off a PSP?
I do agree with you that not everything is made off gold what they sell at DealExtreme, I also bought already some useless stuff from them but this item should be a verry big mistake from them cause there are rumors at there site about this item, I even doubt about it aswell and thats why I cancelled the order but after I made the calculation I am in doubt again.
I travell a lot and one off the country's which I visit a lot is Brasil and for such a country whit the infrastructure availleble (or just NOT availleble)
If you make a long bus journey or plaintrip (Brasil is at least 12 hours where in you have nothing to do) or even in the bush or just tracking such a item could be ideal.
Willem
After a email with my doubts Deal extreme send me the folowing message, in a previous message Itould them about the doubts and asked them to check or the ordered battery is realy 12000 mAh, they have checek it with the suplyer which confirmed the capacity of the battery, as soon it arives I will post a review of it, which maid take a few days cause I want to test how many times I can charge my phone with both a 2000mAh and the original 900mAh battery.
Dear Willem ,
Thank you for your reply.
Item 19086 was shipped on 12/31/2008 after checking. The supplier informed that it is 12000mAh, we will keep the ticket open, please feel free to send the news once you got it?
Thanks a lot.

Received the battery
Received today the battery but the Mini USB doesn't fit at my Diamond the output is 5V 700mA anyone now or this is enough to use and charge my Diamond at the same time cause if this is possible I will try to make a custom cable.
Someone can tell me aswell which contacts are used to charge a phone on mini USB, as you can see it seems the contacts are about the same there is just a diference at the outside off the connector, the main outside connector is a standard plug but I don't now or there are connectors at the market to make from the standard connection a mini USB
The connector fits at my dock and is able to charge my phone so in case of emergency I can charge the extra battery that way
Here some pictures
http://84.104.255.96/connector/index.html
Well I tested the battery and the outcome is disapointing, could charge my 2000mAh battery once complete so I gues all the critics about it where right, I have contacted Deal Extreem but untill now no answer.

Guys I went through about 4 different battery type chargers which ran of AA's and all sorts. All were useless and generated more heat than delivered juice to my Desire.
On the plus note I eventually found http://www.amazon.co.uk/Proporta-30423-USB-Turbocharger-3400/dp/B002DYGQI6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276088348&sr=8-1
This is good enough to give me two full charges before having to charge the charger. Its a real neat piece of kit and works very well.

ordered, thanks.
I have a Just mobile Gum pro - it's 4400 mAh capacity and can charge pretty much anything that you can charge over usb. You recharge the pack over mini usb (mains or PC)
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=166301
I use it with my iPod touch, MiFi and my desire and it works great, outputs at 1000mA so the desire sees it as mains charging.
I haven't needed it much with the desire yet as I have mains chargers at home and and in the office but with my G1 I got 3 full charges of the phone before having to recharge the Gum pro. It's pretty compact too so not a problem to keep in my gadget bag.
Hope this helps
I got this one for a while now
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=4662&t_mode=des
and works great. Charges several devices and it has 3400mAh capacity, which is ~2.5 times full recharging Desire.

How much longer would your battery last with something like this? 350mAh doesn't sound like much... Of course it's pretty small, which is something.

thats the one i have, its the size that matters to me personally, its diddy.
true, but the larger capacity charger is much larger in size ie the size of the phone anyway, doesnt look pocketable to me.
i also cant envisage a time when i would need the larger capacity, ie i have a car charger, the stock charger and the emergency charger.

After 3 or 4 recharging cycles I found out it charges my Desire fully only one and a half times, so I'm little bit disappointed. Is this normal? I thought it should recharge it at least 2 and a half times * 1400 mAh = 3500 mAh. The battery is 4000 mAh, so that shouldn't be a problem. Any suggestions besides returning it? I'll be travelling abroad soon and I'm not sure that if I purchase another battery it will come on time for my trip.

Solar Charging

I'm going camping soon, and I need to be reachable 24/7, so I thought maybe a solar charger would work. Has anyone had any experience with these? How is the charge rate?
Any other cheap solutions? A charger that uses batteries would cost too much in batteries.
I tried a cheap eBay solar charger on my previous phone (HTC touch cruise). It was a charger with internal battery. So you could charge it during the day in sunlight and use it to charge your phone at night. At least... in theory. A full solar charge (about 1 week in the sun) gave my phone 10% extra juice I haven't tested it with my desire, but I expect it's even worse since the battery capacity is larger.
I'm not an expert, but I think the "mAh" capacity of the solar charger should be a lot higher (like double or more) than the device you're going to charge. For instance, if you connect it to a notebook (with battery capacities from 4000 mAh and up), the power will be succesfully transferred. But even then, I don't think you can fully charge your phone without draining the notebook battery completely. The Desire battery has 1400 mAh.
I would advise to look for better quality (and more expensive) alternatives. Like the solar chargers they use on campers to power a TV or fridge. Especially if you want to be reachable 24/7. If you want an emergency charger to give you enough power to make one phone call a day, a cheap solar charger will be sufficient though.
I'm a new user so I can't post link. But try googling "High Capacity Solar Charger and Battery w/ Flashlight (11200mAh)" and click on the 1st result. Bought that and am very happy with it. the charge rate is almost the same, if not the same, as the wall charger. it's got flashlight and mosquito repellent too.
theoretically it can charge the desire from zero to full 8 times before you need to charge it again. but you know it will be lower than that.
if you're looking for a cheaper solution then try googling "Solar Charger USB Hub" and click on the 4th result. but the charge rate will be substantially lower though. hope that helps.
I usually use the SOLIO solar cgarge, maybe a little expensive than the ebay but work very well, i use it about from 3 years and never had a problem.
I've testet him in very extrem condition.
You can see it on the solio web site, i have the classic version.
one of the best used by forces in iraq etc is the "solar monkey" make sure if tyou get one you choose the correct type for your device as different devices are more power hungry than others, i'd go for the top link the power traveller

No. We're going backpacking. Tents and sleeping bags on our backs and sleeping in the outdoors. <3
Thanks for the links guys. I will check them out. I could attach the charger to my backpack with the cable going into phone which is in my pocket, so I can charge it while we're hiking. I'll look extremely geeky, but it'll work I hope.
I need to be reachable for work. I'm also bringing my laptop with me in case there is an emergency at work. Hurray for tethering!
It doesn't really do "camping in the wilderness" any justice though.
If you are in the UK i wouldn't waste your money on a solar charger...i'd spend the money on some nice waterproofs lol.
Got this here: Energy Trends ET 3000
Wondering why they don't have a language selection... http://www.energy-trends.eu But you can see it here:

Also described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7093929&postcount=13
But I assume that they don't deliver to the UK.

Alternative to Spare Batteries

I like a lot of people use my phone very heavily yet I don't have an opportunity to plug my phone into an AC charger until I return home. A great remedy to the problem is this handly little AA charger.
http://www.igo.com/accessories/powerxtender-charger/invt/ps002640004/
The reason I like it so much is because cheap portable battery packs usually pack under 1000mah of power. Thats not even enough to give you 1 full charge. And the more expensive 2000mah+ packs are often on the large side and well... expensive lol. On the other hand this little bugger is cheap and small enough to sit in my pocket without being a bother. What I find is the best part of it is the fact that you can choose what kind of AA batteries you put into it. I opted for Energizer rechargeable which are rated at 2450mah EACH for a total of 4900mah of power. Thats the equivalent of 3 G2x batteries. Keep 2 more batteries in your backpack/desk/purse thats an additional 4900mah. If that can't get you through the day you have more than just phone issues
Originally bought it for my Vibrant but quickly found it was awkward because the the product doesnt come with a cable adapter. This meant it was hanging and putting much strain on the usb port of the phone. Out of fear of breaking it I stopped using it. However since the G2x charges from the bottom there is absolutely no problem espcially seeing as I bought a 20cm micro usb extension cable so that the charger can sit in my lap or on a table while using the phone.
Just thought I'd share this since we can't get legit replacement batteries yet and even when they do become available they will cost a pretty penny. Got mine from Staples but they can be had on amazon also along with the usb extension able and rechargeable batteries.

I almost bought one of those until I saw how low the capacity on it is. Looks tiny though which is nice.
J&R has Veho 5Ah external battery for $35 and I have 2 of them.
Just use regular microUSB cable to charge the phone and leave the original cable secure.
I'm thinking about getting the i-up 13,200mAh pack.

Just received my Pebble XT 5000mah pack. Won't be able to put it through its paces till next tuesday. Upon first impression, i think im in love with this thing already. its small enough to sit in pocket without having much presence. extremely lightweight. and the cord is long enough to be able to have the charger in your pocket and phone in hand (thank you lg for putting the usb port at the bottom). All info I have read indicated that it really does output 5000mAh of power so even a heavy user such as myself will have no problem getting through a full day of use.
Just wondering how everyone's batterys are working out for them?
Also how many full charges did you get?
Also any likes or dislikes of product they decided to buy?

That looks like something that might be good out camping or something where you needed to charge your phone without touching it. But I would figure actually picking it up and putting that much weight on he usb port a very bad idea... This should come with a extension cord to charge while using, even texting or something would be pretty difficult to hold both...

I've used an IMP500 Rechargeable (5000mAh) external battery pack for a few years with great sucess. They make them as large as 11000mAh (or more?) and even have solar-rechargeable options. Just take a look at New Trent or other similar products on Amazon or eBay.
The best part about the IMP series is that they have multiple adapters for iPhones, mini/micro USB, PSP, DS, and other devices so you can charge your phone and anything else you might be carrying around with you.

I'd recommend buying elsewhere because you can find them for 30-50%+ off.

External USB Battery Charger for HTC Desire Battery

Hi All,
Couldn't find this posted before so wondered if anyone could recommend a USB Battery Charger to change the batt from my Desire without the phone. I have a spare and going on travels want to be able to just leave the battery charging on its own and not use the phone all the time.
Ive seen quite a few on ebay and some look really dodgy with adjustable charging pins etc whereas others are ridiculously cheap and i can only imagine will ruin my battery.
Key points are it should be small, light, USB powered and whilst I accept it will not charge as good/full as through the phone - not to knacker my batt completely.
Cheers for any help.
Bridgstfer
I have been looking for the same thing and found a battery pack on Amazon for £25, manufactured by New Trent it has a 5000mAh battery in it and can recharge your phone at least 3 times.
I ordered the dual output version on Sunday, so hope to get it and try it out in a couple of days.
Using a Veho pebble here, works great
would be nice for a faster charge though, it seems a bit slow for 750ma

I've got one of those. It's really good, one of the outputs is 1A so charges up really quickly.
My only criticism is the on/off button is easily pressed by accident, but that's really looking for problems. Oh and it would have been nice if the usb socket to charge it was a microusb one so I could use the same lead as the phone.
It's a good battery pack.
It certainly sounds like it is going to be good.
With regards to charging the pack itself, does it come with a USB to mini USB charging lead?

Mine didnt come with any charger or leads but as I have a box full of that stuff it wasn't an issue.
Edit: I'm an idiot. It came with a lead with a selection of interchangable tips to fit most phones.
I forgot as this is now also living at the bottom of my tangled box of leads.
Thanks for the replies guys.
Yeah i actually had one of those external battery packs (5000mah) but found that you could not even get 2 full charges out of it and therefore not worth the extra weight/charge time.
Basically its misleading because the voltage of the battery is different to you phone battery and it need to be upscaled or something - there are quite alot of posts about it. Let us know if you manage to get 3 charges though - that would be good.
But anyone used external chargers for the a spare phone battery?
