Low Signal - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I have a problem in my Xperia handset, its dropping signals sometimes and even I can,t make calls and also my friends are telling me they cant reach me. I tried switch off HSDPA and 3G, and seems it solved the issue. Is this a really firmware issue or a hardware issue. Coz if its a hardware issue I need to change the device. Im so thankful if anyone can give me an advice..
Thanx,
Sha

it also could be an issue with you not being in a well covered place
for the frequencies your phone support ?

Don't know a lot about your phone, but it should be possible to flash another radio version, like all the other windows mobile phones.
It could do the trick.
It really helped a lot on my Diamond.

Some radios work better than others for different pdas.
Also, where do you live?

network sundenly going off many tiles a day

Hi,
Many times a day network goes off for no reason.
I have to turn it OFF/ON or choose select network.
It is not a network problem because I have another phone on the same operator that do not have this problem.
Thanks in advance.
Saadi
I'm so haaappy to hear this from somebody else on this planet !!! (Thought I got mad)
Exactly the same problem, but only when in ROAMING.
The network goes off several times the day and the only option is to turn off and on the phone.
Another problem connected with Roaming mode is that when dialing a number, there is one dialing tone + second dialing tone (immediately after the first one, but its faster than a normal repeating one), which is extremely loud so that I get ear pains.
What to do guys?
I was talking to the PalmOne support using my support-ticket you can get with registration but he didn't hear about that and couldn't help me.
...that's so much pitty as I love the device
Try changing the 3g band to gsm under settings/phone/service/band selection that might help
Hi,
I tried to limite to UMTS but it did not work, passed it to automatique still did not work. Will try GSM.
I have noticed that I am having this problem only at work and home where I have a wifi router near by.
Could the wifi affect reception?

Shouldn't be possible as Wi-Fi is completely different radio band and there is technically no Wi-Fi corresponding element inside the Treo. But as I think this might be a bug (firmware?) why does so few people have this problem...
It is weared, I only have this problem at work and at home.
So they must be something that affect reception.
The only thing i can notice is the presence of wifi routers.
smmonla - have you got any news about this problem?
I tried to hard-reset, to change all the bands etc. but nothing helps.
There are no problems with my new Excalibur which is also very sexy, but still I want the Treo
Hi,
Still having the same problem.
As I have read, we are not the only ones having this problem.
I also like my treo a lot.
Hope palm has a fix for this problem soon.
have a look at here. It isn't a very hot news and doesn't really help me, but still:

I have noticed that when I limit the band to GSM, I do not have the problem anymore.
Could it be an OS problem?
And now we are on the subject of 2G versus 3G, there is at least one advantage with the S620 not being a 3G mobile. You are free from the potential problem that some 3G Smartphones become “confused” regarding the continuous switch between 2G and 3G radio masts. A 3G Smartphone sometimes loses the connection to the network completely, even though it looks like you are “on”. Numerous Qtek 9000/HTC MTeoR/HTC TyTN owners have experienced this problem because some mobile operators have not optimised their networks for these types of models. These problems should be on the decline, partly because of software updates from HTC and partly because of mobile operators beginning to solve their network problems.

Problem while call, other side cant hear me good

As i stated in topic name i hawe this problem whit my Xda O2 exec (Htc universal)
The other side nearly cant hear while i hear them crystal clear.
I browsed this forum to find a cure and i think i found something.
While i was on google some people also had this problem it seems to be caused by my Radio version.
I beg u help me whit this problem i hawe this Device as my main phone and i need it in my job.
Its a pain in the ass while my boss calls me to ask about work in progress and he cant hear me
I hawe browsed this forum but cant find any working link to Radio 1.15 (i heard that is wery stable and has not these issues) please could anyone upload it to rapidshare?
Many thanks in advice

Once again thank u.

Radio flashed but the problem is still there
Today i will try to flash the radio to something else.
Wish me luck.
If you manage to find solution please share your experience with us, because I have the same problem... I tried many radio and Windows roms... In my experience forcing processor to work at constant frequency (520MHz) and deactivating frequency throttling help to reduce problems but doesn't remove it completely... try to use performance applet (you can download it in form of .cab file) and fix the frequency...
Its like pain in the ass man
I still did not found any solution.
Right now i installed new rom and the problem is still there.
I will try WM5 maybe that will fix the problem.
If i find a solution i will sure post it.
I've also had the same problem. I disconnected my BT headset, did a SR and the problem disappeared. Later this day I connected my BT headset and the problem didn't show up so far. On the other hand I noticed my device got somehow extremely sluggish. It took around 10 minutes to install HTC Home VGA! What's more, it was overclocked to 624MHz Oo'
Topic update:
I am currently trying to get new Gsm antenna.
I will try to replace my and then we will see if that helps.
If not i will order a new motherboard.
My Experiences with the very same problem
Hi there,
I have Two Uni's. One is G3 other is G4. I also have two sim cards from two different operators one is GSM 900 other is GSM 1800.
My main Sim is GSM900 one and when I realized I have problem, first I thought its the coverage and operator. Switched the sim cards (put GSM 1800) problem disappeared. Then I though I will put another operators GSM900 card and try. I still had the same problem (I had full signal whlie testing all three operators).
Then googled, searched the forum, and figured that its caused by Radio version. I installed "problem free said" version 1.15 but my problem still persisted.
Today I'm still having this issue. What I did was to use GSM1800 in Uni and GSM 900 in my other phgone Benq E72. İt works perfect now. (However it is not the solution, I would like to use my GSM900 card with UNI).
To sum up, I tested in two different UNI's. One is G3 other is G4. I tested with total of three operators sim cards two is GSM900 one is GSM1800. I tested with different ROMS and RAdio ROMs, including 1.09, 1.15, 1.17, 1.18. I always had the problem when I use GSM900 cards in both G3 and G4 units with different radio ROMs. Problem disappeared when I use GSM1800 sim.
So I don't think its your motherboard or antenna. It might be Radio ROM related (let me know if you find a stable, trouble free ROM) or it might be a hardware design flow oıf UNI.
Hope that helps.
alpusm
perhaps your mic is at fault
First i also thought that it is the microphone but then i tested it.
I did let it record some music and it was crystall clear.
Before a minute i tryed my brothers sim card and it had also this bug.
Will try to find some ultra old card.
GSM 900 or 1800 card?
Monk1986,
Are you using a GSM900 or GSM1800 operators card? What is your operator? if it is a GSM900 operator (and card) it will verify my findings.
BTW I dont think its card (itself) related. So I don't think it will make a difference if you try with a old sim card. (Try and post your experience if you can) I think it is the frequency band and how unit and radio roms handle this.

alpusm

I don't think so, I have the same problem in all my Uni's that i have had owned along the past 3 years in a random manner, so according the very nice scientific experience by alpusm, I highly suggest the different combinations between the ROM, Radio versions and the frequency band that the SIM uses. If all of us post their experioence here, I think we may reach a final diagnosis to the problem.
if 1800mhz worked, is there some way to force it to use it? I am in the USA and use T-Mobile..
I gave up on my phone and while laying around, the screen broke cuz my wife sat on it..:-( ...
It may be too late for me... I am moving on to the Diamond.
Any further developments????????
I have the same problem too Tried changing radio roms and OS roms - still nothing. But if I use GSM1900 mhz, everything works fine.
Has anybody resolved this problem?

Emergency Calls Only!

Hi guys
This is the first time ever I am trying an android phone out coming from an iPhone 4.
So basically I got my nexus s yesterday it said it was on vodafone but I understand the nexus s is fully unlocked. Anyway yesterday I put in my o2 sim and it worked out the box making calls etc. I rooted it and everything was fine. This morning I used the gps for a trip to work it worked perfectly. I could connect to the 3G network etc.
When I came home in the evening I tried to make a call and it said emergency calls only but it doesn't let me make any calls! I have hard reset it. Tried different roms. Erased cache etc etc. Still nothing. I called o2 support and they said from their end my sim is fine and no problem with it there is no lock etc.
If I go into the diagnostic tool thing *#*#4636#*#* it says the following
Signal strength -107 dbm 7asu
Gsm service: emergency calls only
Gsm disconnects: state:dcinactivestate disconnected with last try at 12:59am fail because no error
I have no clue what's wrong please help!
nevermind, missed that you had done that
try another SIM card
i had a similar issue, and the problem was the SIM card
this is how this thread ended? did anyone even find a fix i have this same problem its driving me crazy. I can only find rogers network also btw which i am not on.

Some one please solve this damn issue......it is more spread in India.......tried all baseband updates but still......driving me crazy
Same problem here.
Hope may fix!..under testing..Emergency calls only!!
I was so much annoyed with this so called network drop issue 'emergency calls only' which is appearing on my moblie every now and then and while on important calls..suddenly cutdown due to network loss.
im not a techy geek to go into kernels and rewrite some of the scripts ..etc..
so i may sound silly..but pls try it out..its working for me for last 2 days without drop..may be bcoz of wat i did or may be simply dont knw still testing..so i thought to share this across and see wat others experience..
the actual thing wat i did find is that there is some .005 mm gap over the sim in sim slot so i felt it may be a cause of some not contact of sim with the slot..in some micro levels..
so i introduced a paper above the sim while inserting sim in slot then it becom tight enough to stay its in contact all times..
its simple.. but u people hv to say weather its bcoz of this it works ..
Thanks Ram..

sorry guys : ( its not the fact causing network error.. i got a drop in signal after 2 1/2 days..
Same issue!
hey guys,
I am facing a similar issue.
I picked up my Nexus S (unlocked) running on 4.03 from UK, but using it now in India.
Baseband version - I9023XXKI1
Kernel version - 3.0.8-ga178ab4
Build number - soju-userdebug 4.0.3 IML69C 235871 test-keys
When I use any SIM here (Airtel/Vodafone), it is getting into Emergency mode. But strangely the GPRS service works. I am able to browse, stream, email etc. I dont understand how GPRS services are working when GSM isnt?
I am unable to use my new phone! Can anyone please shed some light here...
My nexus does this also, I've only found trying different radios to help but not eliminate the problem. Also when searching for networks, manually selecting your carrier instead of having it on automatic also helped.
I had this problem the other day. I was on emergency calls only, and AT&T said it was due to an antenna outage. Then I told them my wifes phone was working.. ended up at AT&T store, no luck, etc, etc.. To put an abbreviated story of my night of pain.
I tried a ton of different radios, all would not connect to 3g or make phone calls. Until I installed UCKF1 (New Version) from the [RADIO/GUIDE/TWEAK]Radio JK1,JK8,KB1,KB2,KB3,KD1,KF1 & UCKD1,KE1,KF1 with HSPDA Tweak thread. I don't know what that radio file did, but it fixed it. And after that when I flashed other radios which were previously not working, they were working again.
I'm not sure what happened, but while this was going on radios I had used before like KB3 didn't work. Once I had UCKF1 (New Version) installed, I was then able to successfully go to any radio I tried.

[H] Reception problems

Hello I have a Nexus D821 and have reception problems when I'm in the house
There is a way to replace a modem? If yes how?
Do I need to replace the antenna ?

There is no hardware replacement as the phone in each country uses the same one. There is a thread in general that suggests you can take a piece of wire and extend the "Aerial"...
If you have unlocked the bootlaoder, you could try just flashing different software baseband / modem / radio though

I gave you 2 possible fixes in my last post :/
I have a weak signal in my home.... Was worse on older devices, but still it's not great. It's just a part of life. Usually not much you can do about it.
My work around is trying to stay on my WiFi and use apps like voxer or bbm to message when I'm at home.... Since they use my WiFi, not my antenna or data. Of course the problem with this, is the people I want to communicate with need these apps installed too. And they will use some data when not on WiFi.
Also, battery life will take a beating if you're on data with poor reception. Again, being on WiFi eliminates that.
Luckily I can usually make calls inside now.... But with my older devices, I usually had to go outside to do so.
There's also cell phone signal boosters, but they are very expensive and reviews are mixed about whether they help.

[Q] Bad UMTS-data stability

I have searched this forum, but couldnt find any thread with this specific issue, however there are some threads regarding the different modems available... have browser them but the sollution for me is still to find
Using nightly CM-12 with included modem, global OPO on the Telenor network in Sweden(2100Mhz for UMTS, dont have LTE on this SIM).
I installed CM12 as a troubleshooting-step after I tired using both the stock CM11s and CM11 nightlies. CM12 gave me the best signal strenght over all.
This thing is, I can get a good signal so the phone seems to be able to communicate with the cell-tower on the frequency used by the nerwork... but it is very unstable... Jumping from H/H+, from full to none signal-stenght. Also seems to change Cell IDs, this is even when the phone is stationary...
Even if I have an OK signal on H/H+, trying to use the dataconnection sometimes works, but often it would result in time-outs etc, even if the up/down arrows in the indication icon shows activity... Also sometime trying to use dataconnection when the signalindicator looks OK, it will drop to nothing... And speed-tests gives very poor results...
Dont really know much about how the physical layer for the mobile networks work, so dont know how to interpret this behaviour...
I have described these symptoms also in the modems-thread in the General forum, but having tried most of the modems, this is still the best ROM/modem combo...
Dont know if related, but using a WLAN-connection the HSPA cell connection is stable at around -103dBm... no flapping...
I feel that I have tried the most often recomended action with no appearant improvement, dont really know what to do now? Change modems, try to unlock additional bands... Any suggestions?
If any developer wants me to try any thing, or provide any more information I will try to do/supply that!
Update
Took the phone out to the local shopping center and got some surprising results...
Consistent -59dBm and around 20Mb/s downstream on UMTS.. So this beggs the question, why is it flapping up and down at home, where an old galaxy s3 mini sits comfortably at the same usable signal-strenght most of the time on the same network?
Is this a modem firmware thing, or antenna?
