Updater.apk - G1 Android Development

Is there any reason why I shouldn't rename Updater.apk?
I'd like to update to the modified RC30, but I don't have access to an SD card reader at the moment. However, I'd like to avoid accidentally updating to T-Mobile's RC30 in the meantime.
Does anyone know what harm might be caused by renaming Updater.apk using mv?

Why do you need an sdcard reader? Your phone already does that nicely . Just plug it in via usb and click "mount" in the usb notification thingy... Or am I missing something?
But if you're going to change something, the test keys are probably a better bet. Rename or delete /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.

i recall someone on irc losing root because he thought removing updater made him safe from ota. renaming otacerts works

I third that. Rename otacerts.zip to screwyoutmo.zip

Yes, you're right. That was dumb on my part.
My phone just did this again. The only thing I changed in this situation was the renaming of Updater.apk. So, either my device is defective or renaming Updater.apk somehow kills the phone eventually, but not immediately after you rename it. Just FYI in case anyone else thought about doing this.

I'm not sure what I could have removed that would cause this, but I'm attempting a restore. would anyone be willing to upload the standard contents of the /system/app folder for me?

when are people going to learn to reNAME instead of reMOVE. it's a BAD idea to experiment like that without even having an SBF yet. I'd say from now on, stick to the list of apps that are "safe to remove" from droid x. I don't have the time to get the system apps right now but I may be able to when I get home later
Yes, you should just rename files so that you can restore them easily.
Check the system dump in the Themes and Apps forum.. see if you can reconstruct from that.
yeah, Im not even sure what messed up, I was going off the safe to remove list found droidxforums com/forum/droid-x-hacks/1347-removing-bloat-11.html#post13552
and its working again.
I just restored my backup, and it works fine.

[Q] unable to update manually, getting unsuccessful download.

Hello, I seem to be having a problem when I attempt to download update 2.3.3. Whenever I select the link it never works. The ending result is a message saying unsuccessful download. I've tried other websites only to have the same outcome. Here is some info about my phone that may help on the diagnosis. It was sent to samsung for a screen repair and at the time my NS was on 2.3.2. I received that update via ota. When i got it back it from repair it was on 2.3.0 and I believe the bootloader is now unlocked (when i turn it on the lock is unlocked at the bottom of the screen). I got 2.3.1 again ota recent;y and I'm on version GRH78. Thanks for any help you can offer.
I don't understand how you're getting "unsuccessful download." Are you downloading the .zip from your phone?
ya im doing it from my phone. am i way off and i should be using my comp?
That's why.. the browser is made in a way so that you can't download files.
To workaround this, download ASTRO from the market. Open ASTRO, go into preferences and scroll down and check the box "Enable Browser Downloads."
If you don't want to do that.. download it from the computer.
Rename to update.zip (unless its not stock recovery)
Put it on the root of sdcard (/sdcard/)
Unmount
Boot into recovery
Update from update.zip
Done.
Links to 2.3.3 are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967953
Press the thanks button if this helped you, its the least you can do
Enjoy.
And if you downloaded from the browser.. use ASTRO (or any file manager) and go into /sdcard/downloads/ and move the .zip to the root of sdcard and rename to update.zip
Cool, thanks. I'm going to give the Astro route a try. I'll post my results.
When I'm in astro and i press the rename button it doesn't seem to do anything. Like it wont let me rename it. Thanks again. and where abouts is that thanks button. It's probably right in front of me.
Is there away to completely delete the file in astro and start over. When i initially was trying to rename the file i hit new folder and named it update.zip. Now that folder seems to be amongst the rest of the those folders i downloaded. will that effect anything. Or if i go the comp way how do i find the internals of my phone (sdcard) to move the file in there. thanks

You don't need to redownload. You're just wasting bandwidth. Use another file manager or mount it via usb and rename to update.zip and move to root of sdcard
To rename:
Long press the zip. Edit. Rename.
Not hard. Just calm down. Its not a race
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Using Astro i finally figured out how to rename the file to update.zip but i can't figure out how to put it on the root of my sdcard. I've been long pressing the renamed file and then edit and i press move. It says it's moving the file (no idea where it's going) but I'm not given an option of where to put it.

Long press the .zip -> Edit -> Move -> Press Back [the button on your phone] on the top left (update.zip should be in /mnt/sdcard/download/), go to the point until it says /mnt/sdcard when you're there .. on the top there are a set of buttons.
Paste, Home, Up, Multi,Edit Arrows... press paste
And please give me some thanks. Or I'll stop responding to this :\ its the least you can do for me helping you. Much appreciated.
Sorry on the late thanks. I'd press it twice if i could. Going to give this a try, hope it works Don't mean to break topic but i was wondering if it's ok to do this update recovery process while it's charging via wall socket. Or should recharge and then proceed.

Nope it shouldn't matter. I actually recommend doing the process while its plugged in, especially if its at a low battery percentage rate. Because if its doing this process and your battery is low and it decides to shut off. You might possibly brick your device (speculating).
Not that I'm trying to scare you of bricking your device. Nexus S is pretty secure, haven't heard a single report of a legit brick. It's really hard to brick this phone.
It's official, Currently running 2.3.3!! Thanks a million.. ps. In regards to the discussions involving this update and the screen colors changing. I feel compelled to mention that I prefer the new look, which is very subtle. Whether it's just my specific phone that looks better or my personal preference, the colors are definitely more natural. Thanks again man, peace.

[Q] Galaxy S2, installing camera hack by potatoman

Hi all,
Apologies for such a newbie question. I can assure you I have been searching for a couple of hours trying to find the answer but have had no luck.
I have a Galaxy S2 and would like to install 'Potatomans' camera hack to record video at a higher bitrate.
I have followed steps to 'root' the phone which has worked fine but I am having trouble installing the camera hack....
Firstly, I can't rename camera.apk using 'File Expert' (Error: 'could not rename') and there is no option for me to press 'mount' in the top right. (I heard this mentioned as a solution for the problem while searching). So how do I rename camera.apk?
Secondly, When 'Potatomans' instructions say 'copy the file over to system/app' does this mean using a client like Kies or SuperOneClick? As I downloaded the .rar file on my laptop but not sure how to get it into system/app on the S2.
Many thanks,
George

Use "root explorer" to copy your original camera.Apk to a safe location then replace it with the hacked one.
or read up on ADB and use that method.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply (thanks button clicked!)
I have done that but i cannot get it to work, the icon disappears after replacing camera.apk, it has also dissapeared from the applications menu.
When i click on camera.apk (in root explorer) and select 'install' it says 'application not installed' and camera still doesnt work.
Also I have tried replacing the camera mod with the original camera which i renamed camera.apk.bak, this too doesn't work, same result as above when selecting 'install' through root explorer.
Aby ideas? Could really do with getting my camera working, even if it is just the standard one.
Hmmm..
Not entirely sure what may have gone wrong here...
Are you sure that the hacked camera.apk is compatible with the ROM your using?
As for reinstalling the original, if replacing it (after correctly renaming back to camera.apk) doesn't work then you may need to wipe/reset...
If the hacked camera.apk is compatible with your ROM then the easiest thing to do is swap these files over in the actual ROM zip itself before putting it on your SD card and flashing it.

Thanks again for the reply
I have no idea what ROM I have or whether it is compatible. looking in my phones setting it does have a number ending in KG3, I think is a ROM number I have read about on this forum?!
After backing up my images/messages using KIES, what would be the best way to wipe/reset. Does 'restoring to factory settings' using the phones menu actually reset the program files?
Alternatively should I reset it through KIES (if thats even possible).
I think I would end up messing more things up if I tried to swap the files over in the zip file! So will just leave it if its not compatible with my ROM.
I have installed a new rom (ke7) and installed the hacked camera. The camera icon disappeared again but this time the camera WILL work if i access it through the 'gallery'.
So now all I need to do is work out how to create a camera shortcut onto the homescreen and app menu. Any ideas???

Accidentally deleted bluetooth

I accidentally deleted bluetooth. I flashed(?) the stock recovery found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/pure-xl/general/twrp-recovery-root-blu-pure-xl-allview-t3269447 and had no luck. I also tried factory resetting it. Any ideas on how to get it to work again? Whenever I try to enable bluetooth I get the "Bluetooth share has stopped working" error.

Do you mean you uninstalled one of the Bluetooth apps in System > Advanced Settings > Apps > All?
If so, please use some sort of root explorer app (you have to be rooted first) to navigate to either /system/app/Bluetooth or /system/priv-app/Amigo_Bluetooth and install whichever .apk that appears to be not installed. I believe this should fix your issue.

Interesting.
I've uploaded my /system/app/Bluetooth folder here. Could you please download that, extract the folder inside to somewhere, and either:
Push the folder via adb using the command adb push Bluetooth /system/app/ while your command prompt/terminal is in the same directory where you extracted the "Bluetooth" folder (cd DRIVE:\your\directory\path\Bluetooth (Windows) or ~/your/directory/path/Bluetooth (Linux) ).
or
Transfer the extracted "Bluetooth" folder to either your microSD or a USB Drive, plug it into your phone and move the folder to /system/apps using your root file explorer app.
Finally, install the Bluetooth.apk inside (which I'm assuming is the one you uninstalled since it is missing).
Let me know how it goes, thanks!

Can you check again? Make sure you go to your system folder from your phone's root directory. It should contain almost all of the default apps installed on your phone when it came out of the box (with the rest of it being in priv-apps).
I have the exact same problem as the OP - I tried downloading the said file but my phone says the file is corrupt - can someone please send an updated version?
Same problem, file corrupt.
Bluetooth got erased because the system detected that the app was sending sms by itself (or so it said) and thus deleted it. I have the same problem as the one above, the file seems to be corrupt and can't install the .apk
Please, if there is another way to solve this say so.
Same problem...
I have the same problem as above, my phone detected the SMS permission and said it might cost you money and recommend an uninstall. I never realised I would be able to uninstall Bluetooth without being rooted but it did it anyway - maybe it's an android bug?
Anyway, I tried downloading your Bluetooth.apk and reinstalling but it said file corrupt.
Any help would be much appreciated! Sounds like this is a bug that's been going around...
Hello, I cant find the Amigo Bluetooth folder in /system/priv-app. So Can anyone please provide me the folder here
Also any other solution for re enabling the Bluetooth
Moto 4 Bluetooth gone
Same problem here
Did anyone found a solution yet?

following this thread will allow you to reload the factory rom to default settings, including all factory apps and files. this is a "OEM reset"
to the fullest, bringing phone back to factory sent condition. (be prepared to do a few ota updates when done)
pay attn and read the whole thread (Yes I know its long) especially when it talks about SP Flash tool...

Thanks for the info.
I dont know yet if a simple apk via adb could fix the problem here instead of flashing the complete device
Fixed
Hey, I had a look elsewhere and found a forum on the Lenovo website (can't post link here), hopefully this will work for you too.
Basically you want to go to Settings>Apps>Reset app settings and that'll do the trick.
Good luck!

Weird behaviour Copying ZIP to U11 from Windows Explorer

So, I was able to copy and paste all kind of files from Windows to the phone, but for some weird reason whenever It tries to copy over a Zip file it throws an error that the device is not responding, when it's not true, since I can cancel it, and then copy another file with a different extension.
You're not alone. I've had the same issue with larger zip files via USB. I got around the issue by either using an app that enables transfers via Wi-Fi, which is super convenient, or powering off and removing the SD card for direct file placement via adapter and and then reinserting the SD into the phone.
For what it's worth, I've experienced this on stock and on Viper U11.

You can easily transfer zips and other files by being in bootloader mode and starting TWRP with "fastboot boot twrp.img" (doesn't install, just starts)
Be sure to say No to breaking System read-only status. Then copy all you want in either direction. Note that if file dates matter to you,
this process will date all files the date and time they are moved.

yup, i'm also on Viper ROM.
I do use WiFi transfer for small files, but when I want to transfer 50 GB worth of mixes files (Titanium Backup, ISO, ZIP, MP3, Videos, lots of other random files)... I'll prefer the USB3 way as it's waaay faster.
it's such a PITA to have to resort to alternate slower transfer options for zip files.
I ponder if there's a way to override whatever security is in place to allow Zip files.

Thanks that's a good alternative.
I guess I could live with a different time / date stamp.
