We finally have Touch pro being sold locally here (India)....normally that should be great news, but here theres a tiny catch!
The device doesnt come with a front facing VGA camera but has the standard 3mp camera at the rear. We still dont have 3G coverage here and probably it does make sense because it costs almost 100 USDs cheaper here in comparison.
I'm somehow not too happy as I really think that we should soon have IM software for winmo which supports video sharing and this device here would be a total bummer.
Couple quick questions -
1. Anyone else in any other country with a similar downgraded touch pro around? Its only the front cam missing, otherwise its just the same
2. Can the normal roms be used on this or does the device with missing/removed hardware have things removed from the rom to have it working right?
Cheers,
San

None of the Touch Pro's released here in the US have the front facing camera either, that includes AT&T, Sprint, Alltel and Verizon. The normal roms can be used just fine, the lack of the front camera doesn't affect that.
Edit-One reason we don't get any with the front camera is no carrier in the US has true, 2-way video conferencing yet.

Thanks for the quick reply. It does have 3G data connect though, does it?
Isn't it a compromise especially because you might be able to otherwise use it to do IM based video conferencing...hmm, I guess I'll have to buy one when I'm traveling outside here.

You are very welcome The ones sold here all have 3G, yeah, the Sprint, Alltel and Verizon versions of course only do CDMA, the AT&T version of it (Fuze) does 3G HSPA on the 850, 1900 and 2100 bands. I'm not sure if you could do IM based Video Conferencing on it, I've never done it but check on here and Google, I'm sure somebody has.
By the way, you have a beautiful country, I hope to make it over there in the near future.

Ok, so I have a decision to make, and only till Wednesday to make it ...
Currently, I have the Palm Treo Pro. It's a GOOD phone, I LOVE the keyboard and I love how small/light it is. I DO NOT like the proprietary USB of the "end" key as its uber sensitive. Also, most of my programs don't work on the screen (OliveTree Bible, Mud Inc. Pocket Cribbage, and Handmark Monopoly V1) ... so my other options are
HTC Diamond - I get $ back, but, I lose microSD Card or HTC Pro, I pay around $100 more, but I get the microSD Card slot and sliding keyboard.
WiFi is important, and I should point out, I am on the TELUS Network.
HTC touch Pro 2
There are many same subject threads on XDA with further information....

hmmm TP2 ain't on Telus ... not yet ... not till the end of '09 / early '10 when they turn on their UMTS/HSPA
kepp this phone until tocu pro 2 comes out
One more for TP2
Is not the "Perfecrt" device but is one of the best candidates available
THIS IS NOT THE TOUCH PRO 2! This is the Touch Pro. Version 1. Telus Mobility DOES NOT HAVE TP2 yet and won't till probably December or January ...
I think they're all recommending that you wait for the TP2, they understand that you're talking about the TP1. I well third and fourth that notion. If you can wait for the TP2, it'll be well worth it. You'll probably have to pay quite a bit of money without a contract.
However, to answer your question, i'd definitely go with the TP over the Diamond.

I can't wait 14-18 months for the TP2 (which is about how long Telus will take to get it *L* as they have ONLY had the Treo Pro for about a month!) ... I think I'll go on Wednesday and get the Touch Pro.
Then why don't U buy it unlocked from another country next month
Because Telus is CDMA but soon (2010) to be UMTS/HSPA

Where on Earth do you live???? Sahara??? Middle of the Atlantic ocean?
Ok some usefull info for you:
Diamond - has serious heat issues and its very well know to fry its own screen. HTC are constantly fighting people and refusing to repair faulty units. I owned one and then returned it as it could also not play music without jumping/skipping. Both these issues can be easily found by going to the Diamond section of these forums.
TouchPro - (not the TP2 as everyone else seems to have got confused over) Never owned one so comments are limited to what can be read on this forum but, I miss having a keyboard and am now ordering an Asus on Monday that has a keyboard. Typing an email on the Diamond was a pain in the a*&e and its only marginaly easier on the bigger screen of my Omnia.
Palm thingy - never owned one, never used one. Can't comment.
If I HAD to chose between these then in all honesty, i'd probably keep the Palm! Why? HTC build quality sucks donkey balls. Its a well known and easily googled reputation. Its a shame really as they spec out the phones very well and seem to have every intention of making excellent devices, just somewhere the penny pinchers seem to take control and quality drops.
Best of luck with whatever you chose today
edit:
Diamond overheat issue - dont think anymore needs to be said on this
Music link - with $125 reward for fix
Music link - check out how many pages!
And just for good measure, another music link
Very quick google brings up over 32000 hits on hardware quality

OK so ... I was downtown yesterday, getting my Security Guard License and walked through Toronto Eaton Centre ... and I picked up the Touch Pro.
So far, I'm happy. I'm still testing things out and seeing what is good etc but ALL my games work, all my programs work AS THEY ARE SUPPOSED to, and I'm happy ...

my friend would like some help choosing a new mobile phone here are his reqs. it does not have to be WinMo....
Need qwerty input, email, decent camera with flash (will be my only camera), and usual multimedia stuff (music, podcasting, web, movies, iplayer). Waiting for N97 on vodafone June/July, but heard good things about samsung omnia HD and new tosh. Cannot buy iphone for fear of shame.
Any network. Unlimited or as near as dammit (300+ for me) txts + data and 600+ or so mins. £40 per month tops for the right phone. Think that's what vodafone n97 will offer.

Acer M900. Full qwerty, 5mp flash camera, takes storage cards up to max available at the moment (16gig). V.Big 3.8" screen.
Available from Expansys on contract to t-mobile . They are getting them dispatched tomorrow to first customers (of which im one!).
Important to remember that on such small CCDs in small cameras and phones, 8meg is probably the biggest you can get and still benefit. Any larger MP is usualy useless and for bragging rights and not much else. more info on this can be got at www.avforums.com

"decent camera with flash" Not really a TP2 speciality that!
edit: tbh, dont buy a WinMo device if your friend isn't techy. They need tweaking and some extensive individual configuring. Your probably better off waiting for the Nokia.

So right now the padfone is available in tawain... there's no release date for padfone for America, and Australia gets it in July...
So my question is, is there any downside to buying the padfone from tawain and using it here in America? The keyboard is luckily in Chinese and English letters... And I believe the frequency will work with AT&T here in America... But anything else I'm missing?
Maybe gps won't work since I'm not in tawain, or the wifi won't, or the os won't be in English, etc, etc...
id just like to make sure I won't have issues before I go and buy it for $1200~ on ebay

i m using a taiwan padfone here in uk. no problem aside from the charger socket (which is identical to US version) OS language can be easily changed to english. gps is working absolutely fine here. it came preloaded with garmin map of taiwan. i changed it to UK map and it worked marvelously. wifi needless to say is fine too.
if you are sure that AT&T will work, then it shouldn't be any problem at all. this awesome beast simply rocks. definitely worth the buy, for now

Please one question...
Actually you using your padfone on a gsm carrier with 3g???
And please tell us more about your experience with your padfone...
GPS should absolutely work. As stated, language can be changed also. I've purchased the phone and it should be arriving here on the East Coast of the US in 2-3 weeks. Ill try it out with my AT&T sim and see how it works out. From my research though, it should work perfectly, on 3G (with HSPA+) and everything.
We'll see!
Thanks for the replies! And yea the socket thing I didn't think about! Glad to hear everything else works though!
From what I have gathered, and it might be wrong...
The padfone won't work with 3G on AT&T or tmobile...
Only gsm calls, and slow Internet speeds (edge)...
But when Asus launches the padfone in America, it will be redesigned to support 4g, I don't think it's an appearance redesign, but hardware to support lte, and it'll get here in America in September, which technology release date time Will probably be October
That's only what I've gathered on the Internet, I could be completely wrong here!
*edit* I take it back. I don't think itll work on 3G. That'll be a bit annoying. Oh well. We'll see.

maybe your padfone works fine with 3g over wcdma... verizon??? sprint???
please keep us informed... if the news is confirmed it is preferable to wait for the U.S. version
It won't be CDMA. It'll be GSM (I don't think its a world phone).
EIther way, I cancelled the order because I realized I wouldn't want a 2G only device. I guess I'll wait, or end up getting a Galaxy Nexus and Transformer for a little bit less but without the benefits of the padfone. .
I have tried on gsm 3g and hspda+ all work fine.
Hahaha... the experience was ....erm.... awesome?
Well, i wouldn't say this is a perfect phone though. You have to love the weight to buy a tablet of this thickness and bulky in year 2012.
Minor issues with the dynamic display.transition (ie. Switching from phone to tablet and vice versa) but presumably the ota updates/3rd party apps should fix it overtime.
Otherwise, it catches quite a bit of attention in the coffeeshops especially when you pull your tablet out of the dock and even cooler when the phone is out
Typing in sms couldn't be better. You can use the full keyboard. I was used to bbm on physical qwerty thus touch screens are not really my thing. But as soon as the phone transforms into notebook, the experience is back. Same goes with whatsapp. Typing is simply awesome.
Phone is very responsive. Can easily play quite a bit of hardcore games as the s4 processor and adreno gpu won't let u down. Only disappointment is that i used to play tegra games, so some of the games are no longer compatible unless you root the phone.
Otherwise feel free to ask me anything re the coolest phone yet and i will be happy to answer

Just to clarify, the 4g is not a redesign. It′s simply known as padfone 4g lte. It runs on a different s4 chip ie msm8960 instead of msm8260. It′s identical chip to current htc one X.

I'm using a transformer prime now and I'm contemplating if I should get a PadFone to replace it.
Specs-wise, I think I would prefer the prime but if the Padfone adds 3G functionality, it's quite an offer too.
However, I'm quite skeptical about changing to a PadFone due to its thick form factor and plastic feel like the first transformer.
What do you think? Is the PadFone worth the change? And yes, I'm intending to use the PadFone as a tablet ; )

There is 3G version.of prime i think.
Like u said, it's quite a weight and size. It's even heavier than the 1st generation transformer.
Perhaps you might wanna think of it this way:
Padfone has phone capability, prime doesn't. Do you want a phone? Or just tablet?
The selling point of padfone is everything comes from and is on the phone. U can take it with u. Saves trouble syncing and 2 sim carda if ur always on the go.
Prime however on the other hand sells it's thinness, lightness and performance. If you want to keep your current phone and an extra tablet, prime is your choice.
I think all in all it's whether you like the new concept that asus is selling. Ie. All in one device.
Your choice really

Haha thanks for the insightful information.
Had always wanted to hear from an owner of PadFone to sort out my thinking since I can't try it. And if I want to get it, I would have to pre-order because that bluetooth pen is kind of hard to miss ; )
Ah, I guess I would wait for a thinner version of it then! And nope, Prime does not have any 3G variants. I would love to be corrected but I don't think that's the case ; ) Would hope that the transformer prime HD or infinity has 3G capabilities! However I do like the idea of texting with a keyboard dock directly without needing any 3rd party apps ; ) It is kind of dumb to synchronise the messages between my gadgets when my prime only has wifi as its internet connection. I hope you understand my fustration with wifi-only devices!
Thank you!

Yep, totally understand your frustration with wifi only issue. I used to have the 1st generation of transformer wifi only and it wasn't pleasant doing all the syncing and can't do much when I'm on d go cuz no wifi. Which is why i find the padfone concept suits me but yeah, definitely worth getting the thinner version to come.

Thanks for your real world usage! That's great to know. However, WCDMA is not the CDMA (SIM-less) phones that are used by the US Carriers (Sprint, Verizon). I believe the previous question asked was about US CDMA carriers, which this phone will not support.
As per your experience on 3G and HSPA+, I believe the taiwanese version runs frequencies for 3G on Vodafone (which I assume you have). The frequencies for US 3G service are different (at least for AT&T) and I don't think this would work here.
I REALLY hope I'm wrong, in which case, I'll order a Padfone immediately!

Padfone in the US
I ordered one from Taiwan and received it over a week ago. everything works perfect, even bluetooth pen. GPS, WIFI and T-Mobile all work seamless in this device. I am loving it. My only complaint so far is that it comes with Garmin installed along with maps of Taiwan. (useless to me) and I havn't been able to find out how to replce these maps with North American maps. Also I would really like to know how to root this thing. The various root programs I have trieddon't do it. and I even tried one used for the Asus Transformer which didn't work either.
Hello, all.
I've recently discovered Huawei and their larger-than-standard phablets. Before now, I only wished for a 7"-8" tablet with a cellular radio... Now I come to find out... It's a thing.
I've just started looking into how to get one of these behemoths into my hands... Sadly it seems I may have to ditch Sprint (CDMA) to do so... But to realize such a huge phone... I'd do it in a second.
Can anyone tell me about Huawei's supply chain into the USA? How do I go about buying one?
Also, the devices I'm looking at seem to be a bit on the old side... The Mediapad X2 being the most current. Is this correct? Am I not seeing something new about to hit the scene?
Educate me. I'm kinda over using strictly what my carrier says I can.
(I've just realized this post likely belongs in Q&A. My apologies. Please move it if you see fit. Thank you.)

You can buy one from newegg.com. It still ships from China but you're secured through Newegg,

The X2 is over a year old but is sill the king of the 7 inch phablet. We have roms for it and help if you need it. It doesn't matter which model you get as far as LTE goes because all models will only give you 3G or HSPA+.

Awesome! Thanks for this reply. Honestly, I'm kinda glad I'm late to this party. I imagine I can pick up the x2, which is still an upgrade for me, for less than premium price.
Bummer on the GSM only thing, but again, I'm not sure it matters that much. I do stream a LOT of Google music via unlimited 4g LTE, so that may hurt... So torn. Maybe I score a hotspot for the car... Hmm.
Hspa is fast enough for any streaming music or video. I had LTE with my previous big phone, Xperia Z Ultra and I don't miss that at all. This monster 16:10 display is amazing but the phone is not perfect.
Some of us have issues with the GPS suddenly not working until a restart of the phone. Still not sale to figure out what triggers that issue.
Also 5Ghz wifi is much weaker than my other devices and the same seems to apply to Bluetooth.
No deal breakers for me but just thought I would mention it.
The only thing I miss is NFC really

That is fantastic news. Is HSPA similar/equal to a 3G CDMA network? Or maybe a middle step between 3 and 4G?

How prevalent is this issue? Out of say, 100 users, how many seem to be affected? Or is it not quantifiable in these terms? Not a deal breaker (unless I'm severely affected, I suppose...)

Also 5Ghz wifi is much weaker than my other devices and the same seems to apply to Bluetooth.

Hmm. When the first 7" Samsung tablet came out, I worked at Sprint. We all joked about using it as a phone and held it up to our faces... It felt a bit silly. I was thinking I might use a Jawbone for phone on my imaginary tablet... I guess the question is: how weak is it?

No big deal for me. I've never found a good use for NFC. What did you use it for?
The final hurdle (I think) is T-mo. What kind of deal will I get from them... Guess I need to go talk to them.
Thanks again for the input and info.
Also, considering the age of the x2, would it be wise to hold off a bit for its successor? I've read the thread about the x3/m2, have there been any updates in that department?
Mmmmm... Three

I'm new to this... Any reason this couldn't be used as a phone?
The tray also has room for a SIM card to fire up 4G LTE data access on the go.

You won't get LTE on the M3 either as it doesn't have any of the US LTE bands.
While x2 still being a perfect device for me, you also may consider zenfone 3 ultra, if you could afford it

For google play, m3 is a tablet and many apps will not be able to install like whatsapp, periscope, etc because are apps for use on phone

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (Its what I used as a phone before my Mediapad X2)
Better screen and faster, its just bigger...
If you buy an international version they have the cellular radio enabled and HSPA+ is more than fast enough for everything. I haven't had LTE in 4 year and I don't need it.

If I had but known! Are you saying the Samsung is bigger/better than the current large screen offerings?

If you don't care about size then yes, its better than the Mediapad X2, it won't be as fast as the latest stuff however like the Zenphone 3 Ultra. But its definitely fast enough for anything you need and the screen is big and gorgeous.
You can also take a look at the Huawei Honor Note 8. I think the 128G model is similar in price as the X2. I have both and the 6.6 inch Note 8 is about 1 cm narrower than the X2 and about the same in length. It has a better screen, better CPU and more RAM and eMMC storage.

A quick googling shows only a couple places to buy the honor at the moment, eBay or aliexpress. Being my first foray into international phones, is this fairly common? Am I missing an obvious source for purchasing?

Unfortunately that's the case now. I live in Hong Kong so it's easy for me to buy it. I think the Note 8 is currently for domestic (China ) only. I bought mine for around US 450, just to give you an idea.

Well, if you ever decide to enter the export business, let me know. I'm going to make a decision and a purchase within the next couple months.

I'm not sure if he'll ship overseas but you can send him an email. I have no business relationship with him but his prices is fair.

Is there some way to fool a phone to think it's a tablet (and vice versa)? I have a MediaPad X2 that I'd like to use more as a tablet than a phone.
Is that possible?
Thanks
I've received mine today and so far so good.
Using EE and Vodafone sim plus 128gb Sd Card.
I'm going to be testing 4g when i step out for both networks, don't have the best of signals within my house.
Sd card works without any silly error messages or compatibility issues.
Not noticed any Chinese bloatware at all which i a plus, full english os.
So far so good
If you have any questions give me a shout.
I can confirm this version works on all 4 G networks no issues. I've tried EE, Vodafone, O2 and 3.
thanks
Hi Riz
Can you get rid of that fourth button (dual sim) in the navbar if you don't use a second sim ? I think it's a bit distracting.
yes you can
Changed display size to small which is fantastic.
Thanks!
And yes, i think I will like this option to set the display size too.
May I ask where you ordered it from? I found many vendors on Ebay stating 'shipped from UK', but I want to make sure it won't come from Asia and I will not have to pay any custom fee.
Sure it was delivered from UK London.
It was from allanelectronic
100% positive feedback
Arrived earlier then estimated date which is top notch
Responds to queries very quickly i asked loads of questions and answered every single one.
No bloatware etc

You should be fine on the box it clearly states LTE 800 2600.
So far so good no real issues and I'm very happy with my purchase. Nougat is fantastic and some of the dark LG themes are brilliant,
Ui has improved vastly, I recommend it over any other android phone. I've had Pixel XL, Iphone 7 plus, S7 Edge, Huawei p9 plus but v20 is unique mainly due to the second screen.
Camera is excellent
Love the dual sim benefit
My only issue is I wish the build quality was better, wish it was more like the iPhone 7 plus. I prefer heavier phone just gives it a more premium feel.

No real reason to root as no custom Roms or tweaks. So I probably won't root unless there are customs roms flying about.

How are you going to root this version exactly??

I usually root all my phones but at the moment for me there's no real reason too. Hopefully development takes off for this phone then I might.
Also I'll only root if there's no real risk and I don't feel comfortable just yet.

Hopefully dev does take off you're quite right. Be a shame otherwise. I use to do galaxy notes. Didn't get 6 cause no ad card. Then 7 obviously..... So this is my new alternative. Looking forward to it too haha
Yeah no risk I'll root too. I definitely need it though. I'll fund it to support whoevers I use to say thanks. That's how much I appreciate it lol.. How many days did it take to get your v20 from that Ireland seller?

He gives estimate of 8 days.
If you order from same seller give my id he might speed it up really!!
nice! i'll do that now
Just to confirm this works on all 4G networks within the UK. I've tested all networks and no issues.
Does it have 3G standy or 2G for the second SIM?
