I've had the Tilt since March of this year and loved it. For about the last 2 months, something went awry and I've been playing phone swap with warranty since (on my 5th one). I went to the AT&T store yesterday and told them my situation and they offered to "extend" my contract for 2 years if I purchased a phone with the 1 year contract price. Since it was cheaper than voiding my current contract and buying a phone, I agreed. I'd love to have an "all-in-one" product. I travel constantly and carry my Tilt for phone/PDA (email, contacts, & calendar are major items for me), a Nano for MP3 playback (hate the headphone adapter for Tilt), and PSP for games and video. I also use the phone semi-regularly for tethering when on customer sites that don't allow my to connect my laptop.
My options:
1) Fuze:
P: Good upgrade to the Tilt.
P: Great VGA screen, but much smaller than other choices
P: very nice that it's smaller.
P: Battery seems to last longer.
P: Keyboard for email
Video playback is better, but not great, not usable for the long haul.
OS is sluggish. I've flashed NATF's ROM no major improvement.
Phone still needs to be "hacked" for tethering.
Can't seem to get used to the lack of buttons on the phone.
2) iPhone:
P: Great Video, MP3, Battery
P: Able to read Word, Excel, Adobe?
No keyboard
Need to Jailbreak for tethering
Calendar and Email seems sketchy compared to WM with Exchange
3) Warranty:
Keep dealing with them and possibly get cheaper upgrade for 1 & 2?
4) Storm:
Really been looking into this phone. Apparently Verizon is using a SIM for this device. According to CS, the phone is unlocked and I can use any SIM in the phone (asked because I travel alot). I could get it and cancel for less than buying the Fuze or iPhone.
P: Edit all docs
P: Good Video and MP3?
P: Good Email, Contacts, Calendar
P: Tethering enabled
Seems Verizon charges more for BB and another charge for tethering, but does AT&T charge a higher price?
Virtually no customization
Never loved Blackberry's or their OS.
People around here seem content in bashing the iPhone, but I haven't seen any real reasons why. Anyone care to state why they hate the device? Can anyone compare a Blackberry vs WM?
I personally like my fuze the best. I too had a tilt and was phone shopping for a while. I think, that for me, the fuze has the greatest capability and works best with business for me. The things I hated about the Iphone: limited software capabilities, no keyboard, calender/email. I also HATED that the keyboard did not turn sideways when trying to type an email or text message. I have big hands so on my friends Iphone I would always hit wrong keys, and eventually it pissed me off. I do however like the screen and functionality/ease of use of the phone. The heat sensitive screen makes it the most responsive.
I really didnt research the Storm, because I have not really liked any BB I have ever played with. The only thing I can say, is that you do have 30 days if you dont like a phone to return it. Try the one you like the best out and see what you think.
Yeah, there's a free trial period. I got the Fuze yesterday with their offer. I'll probably go to Verizon to try out the Storm tomorrow. My wife also has the iPhone that I'm trying to convince her to swap with me for a week. I'm trying to keep the fees down to a minimum though. Taking the Storm home would mean a month of services plus any return fees (AT&T charges at least $20 for any return now).
dont get me started on the iphone! Ok, its got an amzing user interface... its very simple.. anyone can pick it up and use it.. but its specs are horrible!
The bluetooth can only be used for a mono headset.. so it can't be used to transfer files (whether it be pics, ringtones, or videos). Thats one.. two.. where to start, no MMS. Email attachments can only be pictures.. the 3g on the iphone 3g is capped.. no good navigation software, your stuck with google maps... theres much more that i can't think of right now.
As for blackberry, i've never tried on and was contemplating the blackberry bold, but i felt as i would only need a blackberry if worked for a finance company or law. Also I see its main benifit is the bb messenger and only 2 or 3 of my friends have blackberrys.
If you do however go to wmexperts.com a long time die hard winmo user has swapped his fuze for a blackberry bold from one of the writers for crackberry.com and he's giving his thoughts and perspectives on blackberrys from a wm users point of view.

Please do yourself a favour, check out Samsung Omnia before deciding what you want to buy! It´s almost like the I-Phone but way better!

Specs as in hardware? I'm more concerned about functionality. I've transferred multiple videos to the wife's iPhone and it didn't have any issues playing any of them.
I've never used bluetooth headsets or to transfer files, so that's not an issue. I've also not done any MMS, don't even have a plan with it at the moment.
What is the 3G capped to? I've did tests sitting in my living room with the Tilt, Fuze, and iPhone using http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and the iPhone consistently got the highest speed (Tilt and Fuze both with H icons).
I'll check the site you mentioned for info on the BB. Thanks.

I actually read your post earlier. Not sure what vendor sells the phone in the US. I checked ATT, Sprint, & Verizon. Is the Samsung Behold the same thing?
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Cell-Phone-Detail.aspx?cell-phone=Samsung-Behold-Espresso
Is there somewhere to get an unbranded one?
Looks like that's the 684, not the Omnia. AT&T just released that phone as the Samsung Eternity. Verizon is supposed to get it at some point, but no word on when. Looks like an unbranded costs about $700, out of my price range.

but you cant use bluetooth to transfer files or any media... Say i have a video on my fuze, tilt, or e71 and a friend wanted it on his phone, i can send it to them via bluetooth... not the case with the iphone.
Also mms now is included in messaging plans. So if you have the lowest messaging plan, 200 messages or so, you can read in the details online that it inclues picture and video messages.
I've never used bluetooth beyond a bluetooth earpiece/speakerphone(Garmin & Moto T505). I guess I could use the stereo with the 505, but hate FM modulators. Most of the files I have would be large videos or music that I wouldn't be transferring. Basically the bluetooth functionality listed isn't of importance to me.
Is this something updatable by software (assuming Apple came out with a patch or upgrade) or a hardware limitation?
Fuze: Havent played with it much, but it was responsive and looked very clean when i used it (mine arrives next week)
iPhone: Great touchscreen, but on the other side the lack of buttons is very annoying.
Applications, 100's of dollar up (semi useful to Useful) applications. The main problem with all their apps is it has to be "Apple Certified" So some applications that you may find here on XDA will never show up through Apple like ICS Sharing and PocketSNES
Battery I believe it's quite comparable to the Tilt as far as the battery goes, but the Fuze (according to people here) seems to have a better battery life.
MMS, well i believe there is a free app in the app store to send an MMS, so there is a fix but it's not native, also i don't know if it works for receiving MMS.
That is my 2 cents, things you may take into consideration is what type of e-mail you'll be hooking up, corporate e-mail, g-mail/yahoo account. if it's a corp/outlook account i've heard some people make the switch just for the new e-mail interface the iPhone offers.
i don't think there are anything else that are huge drawbacks or improvements over different phones, also i know nothing about the BB Storm, but BB is it's own operating system and has a list of applications for it through certain sites like www.Handango.com and they can be costly.
Hope you enjoy your choice whichever it is!

I just wanted to comment on this post because I came from an iPhone to an HTC Touch Pro. First off I want to say I love my HTC/ATT Fuze and I liked the iPhone (although not as much).
The main reasons for me switching from the iPhone to the Fuze was that the iPhone was too damn restrictive, unless you hacked it and even then it was still quite restrictive. The iPhone lacks MMS, Bluetooth (except for mono, no A2DP or any other form that I know of),the background is not customizable so unless you agree with El Jobso on his views of beauty your SOL (unless you hack). Their is absolutely no camera software (alls you can do is take pictures on it's low res camera) for it's ****ty 2.0 MP camera, no video capture at all, can't tether, cant stream, and much more.
You can only download Apple approved applications. Also you must get iTunes with the iPhone and although it is not that bad of a music player, it requires you to install quicktime (which I think sucks), it also tries to stealth download other apple programs (such as their browser) and often adds bloatware (such as apple updater, and their Mobile me service icon even if you don't have mobile me). Although some of this can be alleviated by hacking your iPhone, it voids you warranty and can be quite tedious as Steve Jobs likes to update the software frequently which breaks your hack and you have to wait another few months for someone to create software to hack the new software so it ends up being a never ending cycle for hackers. iTunes also only allows you limited syncing functions if you don't have a Mac.
Also most of the hacking community is gone as most took their free apps away and usually try to sell them on "the app store" for way more than they are worth.
Also the iPhone is often associated with idiots as many of the "jocks and frat boys" at my college all have one, but don't know a damn thing about what it is capable of, they just know it's the cool thing to have. It also attracts a lot of shallow women and I will be damned if I use my phone as a tool to get laid!
With the HTC Fuze and Windows Mobile, it is like the complete opposite of the iPhone. It is mostly open you can install apps without voiding your warranty, the included Windows mobile software is, in my opinion, very useful (Office mobile, hands free, etc). Their is a huge modding/hacking/development community for this phone (such as this site, Fuze Mobility, etc). The VGA screen on this phone is beautiful (I will never go back to QVGA) although the iPhone's screen is quite good, as I often enjoyed it watching movies and surfing the web. The Touch Flo 3D is fantastic (although that is subjective). The QWERTY keyboard works great (I don't like on screen keyboards). You can also choose between using your fingers on the touch screen, the stylus on the touch screen, use the d-pad/scroll wheel, and the physical keyboard.
I could go on, but I am going to stop here because I am tired and I doubt you want to read anymore. Sorry for the long rant/comparison, I have just really grown to hate the iPhone and it's restrictiveness and have grown to love this phone and it's openness.
Spent the day with the iPhone and pretty much ruled it out. With "normal" usage for me, the iPhone was pretty much dead by 1pm. Also the signal on it was weaker than that of the Tilt or Fuze. Comparing the exact same video copied to both the Fuze and the iPhone, played fine on both devices. The Fuze had a much better picture, but the iPhone was obviously larger. Add the modding and customization of the WM platform and it's no contest.
I went to Verizon store today, but they were sold out of the Storm. I ended up ordering one, so should have it next week to compare. Will update this for everyone.
You might want to read this article and some of the comments about the Storm:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Storm-Reviews-Come-Rolling-In-99208
In the last few weeks I've played with an iPhone, Fuze, Storm, and Omnia. The iPhone was ruled out a while a go. I thought I ruled out the Fuze due to the screen size and mediocre video. I just got the Omnia and not really satified with the video playback. Since this seems to be a major selling and praise point about the phone, this seems odd. I assume most issues can be fixed by a custom ROM, but I don't see any for the Verizon version. I actually got the Omnia for $129.99, so it was the cheapest of the bunch. That's where another issue was thrown in.....
Called AT&T warranty as I've had the Tilt replaced about 5 times. He mentioned they would give a warranty replacement and offered a Bold, Fuze, or Incite. I selected the Fuze and now have a brand new sealed in box Fuze. I'm wondering, can I sell the Fuze the way it is? If I cancel my contract and go with the Omnia or Storm, can I sell the Fuze sealed? I'm guessing I'll need to pop it open and activate it before I cancel in order for it to be "contract free". I can't make up my mind which one I want to keep. I figure I'll play around a little more with the Omnia to see if I can get better video or if a patch for the Storm comes out. Once my time limit on the phones get closer, I'll have to make a decision.

In my opinion with HTC releasing the Touch HD just around the corner, the TP will be outdated and the prices will take a hit. As for the 3g iPhone, it is still the phone to beat especially with all the apps that are being released for it lately plus I dont see a price drop coming within the near future on the blackmarket for these devices since the only other way to get one is thru ATT and a ridiculous plan and 2 year contract.
My $0.02
Cheers!
and the fact that the iphone is overhyped.
meaning, even the stores had plenty of them in storage but they where only to be sold a few on a day (creating a hype).
if you write a problems over the iphone, most of the time you get sabered down by iphone lovers.
iphone is not sold for tweakers.
ppc is tweakable, and you can write down youre problem if you find any.
not that i am trying to put the iphone in corner.
i don`t own one.
and i like the looks, and how fast it works (tried it in the store).
i guess you have to find out yourself.
maybe try to swap with youre friend for a week for testing.
ooh and did i mentioned that i like it that wm isent the only phone OS on the market.
i welcome the idea of google`s android operating system.
thank you guys for your input. anyone else?
The the iPhone 3G is approx $6-700, the TP is about $900.
But over a 2 year contract, the iPhone will probably retain its value better than the TP (namely because Apple releases only one phone a year, while HTC is continually making better and better products).
Of course it also depends on if both are unlocked; if you're forced to use AT&T (or if you really need US 3G) then there's no clear winner since you'll end up paying a lot more for the plan itself.
Otherwise I would say the biggest consideration is what kind of smartphone user you think you are. If you have no problems with using iTunes and Apple's walled garden called the App Store, then the iPhone is a fair choice. But if you're a DIYer and have no problems copying files and making some registry edits, you'll find WinMo much more empowering.
Of course you should definitely also consider your warranty, insurance and replacement options. What will you have to do to get the 3G replaced versus the TP? Etc.
If you want a no-nonsense opinion, I'd say stick with the TP. We're only getting started here at XDA, and the TP has nowhere to go but up in terms of its software. The bulk of what the iPhone has to offer is already on the table, and will probably slow down once developers jump ship to Android. But that's only my opinion
i own both, what do u basically use your phone for? for a normal phone, iphone is great, top of everything, and for multimedia, it's still the phone to beat. and like said, it's fast, and very fast, Apple doesn't need to tell how it works, but watching movie is very pleasant compared to TP, despite the latter has more resolution to the screen.
anyway, if you really need a WM device, stay with TP, and like said before, it's tweakable, whereas the most you can do with iphone is jailbreaking to let other cracked 3rd party applications and games to be applicable on your iphone. not a straight through way to install anything you want.
I hate IPhone, apart from a massive screen & some eye-catching animation it has nothing else to offer and cummon, if u talk about speed, I have tried both IPhone & TP over 16mg Wifi and they both load a page almost within in same time.
How can you even call IPhone a smart phone??? It doesn't even have the basic functionality that a mediocre s60 has...
I won't lie. It's been hard avoiding getting the iphone. The number one feature I want is an app store full of crap I can impulse buy. I want to be out somewhere, bored, and be able to buy a video game or something. The number two most important feature I want is a good browser.
I've been holding out for the Fuze because I've traditionally always bought WM phones. I'm anxously awaiting WM7 because it potentially has a bunch of features I will be really excited about (ie. I am a Zune Pass subscriber, so I look forward to a Zune MP on WM phones) but I the commercials for the iphone keep teasing me... taunting me... telling me I can waste tons of time on it... I keep thinking I could buy the Iphone for use for the year and by the time WM7 comes out, there'll be all kinds of brand new WM7 ready phones that I could switch to.
I'll be honest with you, besides possibly erasing bloatware, I don't plan on doing a lot of modding or anything like that so that isn't important to me.
I want some honest opinions. Should I stand firm on my resolution to get the Fuze or should I take a dip in the iphone waters?
Reasons not to get an iPhoney
(in no particular order)
1. No MMS(picture messaging) when they say you can just email it to someone...how do you send a picture to your friend with a Razor? You can't
2.no Copy and paste(really, how did they leave out something so basic!)
3. can not shoot video (unless you jailbreak it, then you risk getting it killswitched)
4. can't listen to audio through bluetooth, so you can't pair a bluetooth headset to it, nor can you stream it to your cool car stereo(think MS sync in fords)
That's the 4 big ones off the top of my head, go read the iPhone bashing thread for more details.
My top 3 reasons not to get an iPhone:
1.no multitasking (its like I went back to the Palm OS days)
2.no copy and paste (very annoying as I need this for my day to day work)
3.no physical keyboard (Just cant get used to using on-screen keyboards. I like tactile feel of keyboards too much.)
I can list other reasons as to why but these are the main hurdles Apple will have to get over before I would ever consider one.

Thanks but I've never send an MMS anyway, never thought lack of copy and paste was a HUGE deal, not being able shoot video does really suck, and not being able to listen to audio through bluetooth sounds sucky but I've never done it before anyway. Again, what really sucks is that there's no WM app store. Seriously. It's bugging me so much. And as I said, I expect WM7 will have one... but still... that's a year away and I'm impatient...
i have personally owned the new 3g....hated it, let me begin:
battery life sucks:
Why own a 3G iPhone if you have to turn 3G off in order to get a full day out of the battery. And if I even begain to turn the back light up a little then there goes the battery as well. I had one day that I charged teh phone 3 times (full times) to get through the day
you have to pay for apps:
I know you do with a lot of phones, but damn its like if you have an app market there needs to be more free. And almost all of the free one sucks. 1.99 here, 2.99 there add sup QUICK
price of the plan:
they rape everyone with the "iPhone" plan...whatever. I dont even need to say more.
Voicemail get erased:
when you get the "iphone plan" it erases your voicemail and you need to start it all up again. even if you have saved voicemails in it, BYE BYE....and they will not tell you this either
cannot download:
you cannot download ANYTHING on it. I had someone send me a file that I wanted to download onto my phone and run on a school computer that did not have internet hooked up to it. all it was was a .doc file....nope cannot do that
camera:
SUCKS. still in the 1999 era of "slightly better that vga"
acessories are $$$:
all the no name brand stuff is out there is cheap, and breaks easily. but then again a good incase costs almost $50...and then a screen protector is $15 for 2.
cannot copy and paste:
need i say more?
I can go on...
Get a G1, Android Market is sick, has plenty of applications now and it will grow very quickly.
Biggest reason for me not getting a iPhone was the lack of tethering.
(linking the phone to a laptop via say bluetooth so that the computer can use the phones internet connection)
I am a IT support guy and sometimes need to be able to ssh into servers, and tethering a phone is the way I was doing it at the time.
I then bought a HTC Touch Pro, and now do not even need a laptop, as I have pocketputty on the TP, it's great for a quick reboot/restart backup etc.
I'd not want to have to spend too long on the TP though, but it's great for freeing me to not have to lug everything round all the time.

So jailbreak it and do it for free. I don't like the iPhone very much, but there are ways around most of its lack of features. Jailbreaking can you get MMS, video recording, tethering...
copy and paste...so on and so forth we hear it all with iphone not up to WM...but iphone runs very smooth video, games, music...its basically an easy everyday use...if u looking for a more advance normal phone, iphone is the way to go...but WM phone like myself i used it for alot more than making calls, theres things WM wish it can do like iphone and like wise...its just how u use it everyday...i have the itouch and a kaiser...itouch basically fun to watch movies and play games and music...but i can do that with WM phone as well...its just iphone u can get to those thing alot faster with a bunch of shortcut than WM phone, yea i can create short cut on WM as well but with iphone/itouch its just seem more suited for entertainment...i connect my WM to everything though from laptop to cars and share file with basically every device but iphone...pros and cons to everything...theres a reason why every new phone that comes out claim they are the iphone killer...70 percent of people that owns WM phones dont even know how to use the damn thing...but the other 30 percent knows wsup. sounds like u already know whats each is capable of so you gonna have to make this decision on ur own
Lol, those that say iPhone is a lot faster should turn off multitasking in WM. I just don't want to hear them guys complain that they can't multitask any more as I don't hear them complain about the lack of multitasking in the iPhone.
Another thing. For those that want an app store, they should search for the Gecko Project on this forum.
Let me tell you why you should get an iPhone and why you shouldn't. If all you do is basic browsing and listen to music on your phone you should get an iPhone. The browsing experience is still, hands down, the best experience...when it works. I get lots of crashes because it doesn't handle flash at all and mishandles java. But it only happens when I'm viewing a memory intensive or java based web page.
I cannot handle the iPhone anymore and will replace it with the Fuze when it releases for one main reason. No multi-tasking and no turn-by-turn. Despite the problems with WM, which they have many, everything "works" when I want it to. I don't have to worry about Opera mini or skyfire crashing because it can't handle basic flash. If a website doesn't completely work on Mini it just doesn't load properly, it doesn't take you 5 minutes to load just to crash to desktop.
The turn-by-turn is an interesting one but let me explain why it's such a big deal. TomTom has had iPhone software ready for months but can't release it because Apple denies anything from entering the app store that is in "competition" with the base iPhone software. That's why Opera isn't developing mini for the iPhone anymore. Apple is so concentrated on blocking people that it breeds an air of exclusivity, which Apple uses as a marketing tool. While Windows isn't exactly a saint in this category at least the users have fully unlocked phones to be used for whatever you want. And Microsoft will never try to stop basic programs (like TomTom) from creating software for their devices.
What Apple has missed is that the more good software that is available, regardless of what it competes against, the more likely people will buy their product.
Additional problems with the iPhone include:
-no copy/paste
-VERY bad battery life, and I've used lots of 3g phones to compare
-No way to completely turn off ALL sounds for apps etc
-have to jailbreak to tether or do any program worth mentioning
-have to use iTunes. I freaking hate iTunes!
-no file browser (unless you jailbreak)
-have to jailbreak to even get access to your file system
-no flash support....period
Now, to be fair I will post what I like about the iPhone:
-music player is VASTLY superior
-sound quality is VASTLY superior
-basic browsing is smooth and truly better
-3.5" screen is very nice
-slim
-finding the software available is easy (see above for negative!)
-3.5mm headphone jack (some WM devices have, not most HTC)
All-in-all, if you are a basic phone user (which most people that spend time on the site aren't) the iPhone is phenomenal. If you like to do anything with your phone beyond what comes standard, avoid it like the plague. Even with jailbroken your options are still pretty much limited.
I suggest getting a windows mobile phone and use it until Android is ported. With Haret you can run to operating systems until you decide which you like better.
I was in the same boat for about the last month and was heavily thinking I'd be buying an iPhone in December when my upgrade is available. I even was playing with a friends and had myself convinced.
Luckily I came to my senses and have decided to get the Fuze when I can. Granted, the touch screen on the iphone is more sensitive...but I've tried using multiple good onscreen touch keyboards on the tilt and the second you get past a few words and want to type quickly you'll be wishing you had a keyboard.
Also, as another user mentioned the app store can add up and there is a reason most apps are free...because they aren't great. For every 1 good app there are a zillion useless novelty apps that are fun for a few minutes but nothing more.
I used to not fall for the sealed battery excuse until recently my 6 month old ipod nano proved to me exactly why I should care. I am not one of the people that carries multiple batteries and needs to switch during the day...but...my ipod nano when you take it off the charger is immediately down 2 pixel width's of battery so it's not even 100% after a full charge. Now what happens when that happens to your phone...you schedule a week of vacation so you can ship it off and not worry about work or actually using it
iPhone is a toy. I had it for 2 months, then gave it to my wife and went back to the tilt. iPhone is a fun device but it is not functional enough.

it does have multitasking. what it does not have is a task manager.
why TP and not iphone?
- QWERTY
- WM si more mature, more apps, more tweakable
- copy/paste
- more RAM
- higher res
- HSPDA
- BT is not limited to A2DP
- etc
However iphone has it's own pluses, such as: faster CPU, better GPU AFAIK, dynamic UI, etc
Take a look at the HTC Touch HD (youtube it). Now that is waaaaay better than the iPhone.
If you want a keyboard and a smaller phone (width & height) like me, can't beat the Touch Pro.

For me personally, the top reason is that it's not on Sprint my preferred carrier.
And then no real GPS app. I can't live without TomTom on my TP, no way, especially now that i've been gifted a car. Been using TomTom on my PDA phones since version 5.
My biggest peeve is the chokehold Apple has on it in terms of 3rd party customization. To me it's stifling. An app only gets in only if they sanction it. So an app like WMWifirouter would never make it into the app store then.
They rejected an app called Podcaster that allowed you to download audio/video podcasts over the air, and the reason given was because it competed with and duplicated the podcast features of iTunes. But it's been now revealed that the real reason is because they are putting in over the air podcast downloads (albeit limited to 10MB or less) in the upcoming 2.2 firmware and do not want any competition.
Read here http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/06/apple-adds-ota-podcast-downloads-to-iphone-firmware-2-2-continu/ .
Just imagine if you couldn't run any other browser but Pocket I.E (no Opera Mobile/mini, Skyfire, Netfront), or any other media player but Windows media player (no pTunes/CorePlayer/Tcpmp), all because they duplicate an already existing functionality in Windows Mobile.
For me, those are too important to give up. Think about it.
If you don't mind the size, maybe you should get a Touch HD, because it has bigger screen, and therefore slightly better browsing experience.
iPhone's resolution is too low for decent browsing IMO.
Hey guys,
I bought a BlackBerry Bold 9000 last tuesday, and I am thinking about getting the AT&T Fuze. I was just wondering what would the benefits would be if I switched besides having a touch screen. I heard that the Fuze runs slow and that my blackberry is a lot faster. I was just wondering what all of your thoughts are on the Fuze (or Touch Pro) vs the Bold. I am not sure what device I want to have for 2 years or so. I figure since you guys use them everyday you would have some good input.

well imo:
-better operating system: wm6.1
-more broader range of applications available
-vga screen
-tv-out
-memory expandable to 32gig's (when ofcourse 32 gigs cards become avail )
-a whole array of developers cooking roms/creating apps for device/os
-288mb of ram
-built-in gps (not sure if this exists on bold as i know nothing about blackberry phones or their specs, don't care)
ultimately it boils down to your taste. I have always hated blackberry's and never will own one. I know pretty much the whole corporate usa is hooked on blackberry's but i am not for them ... i'ld rather have a device that runs on windows and has flexibility in terms of app development and expansion.
hope this helps.
I went to the AT&T store thurs and played with the bold and didnt like it one bit. First off, you can't customize the bold near as much as you can with the fuze. Secondly, the community(XDA) for the fuze is much better than the bolds community(crackberry). Lastly, the range of different apps is much larger for the fuze than for the bold. Ohh yea if you want to create word docs on the bold you would have to buy the pro version of docs-to-go(~$70) where as you can do that for free on the fuze with office mobile. The list goes on as to how the fuze beats the bold.
Dude, you're in the middle of XDA-Developers, the website every mobile blogger gets tons of information from because it's all available here, the place where there are always tons of developers working on different software to improve/fix/enhance the Windows Mobile experience on HTC devices, and you're asking why the Fuze would be better than a Blackberry?
Point made.
hahaha agreed
and yes the bold has gps but from what i see its either at&t software or google maps that can be used. while the fuze can use google, live search, TomTom, igo and garmin software (additional purchase required for the last three)
if you are a blackberry user, u will love the bold, cause its a decent upgrade to whatever you were using before. other wise just get the fuze, much higher celing.
If he's not convinced by now, look at this review:
http://gizmodo.com/5075236/att-blackberry-bold-review-best-blackberry-yet
They call it the "best Blackberry yet" and still have bad things to say about it. 2 different browsers for WiFi/3G, seriously?
my opinion
im a long time windows mobile user, i got the fuze the day it came out, after constantly playing with it and the software and settings and apps, 4 hard resets in a week, my wife who has a curve said checkout a blackberry, after i got up off the floor from laughing i said why not, hmmmm faster processor, 1gb on board storage, up to 32gb card, i said why not, went to att the next day and swapped for the bold thinking why am i doing this, well after a week i cant put it down. the reason there arent many hacks or roms is because you dont need them, my battery lasts for days not minutes, never locks up or even slows down, downloaded nav4all works perfectly and links up wayyyy faster than my fuze, i keep my phone in my pocket and my fuze even with mortsaver would call people on its own, never happens with the bold, the only difference really is fuze had a 3.2 mp camera and the bold is 2 mp, instead of hours editing the registry finding fixes wondering why my weather isnt working constantly hacking it, i spend hours actually using my phone, wow!!! what a concept, the email is flawless, i tried for over a year to get my company email on my tilt and never did, set it up in about 30 seconds on the bold. the fuze ruined my 4gb memory card the first day i had it, lucky for me i had it backed up, put an 8gb in it then at times it was there or not there, took it out put it in my bold no problems at all!! music player smokes windows media player and it has a 3.5mm jack, the bluetooth also hooks up faster with more options to my car stereo than my fuze did. basically when i read your posts i could only imagine the answers you would get at an all wm website, but remember you always have 30 days to swap it out if you dont like it, (i did keep my tilt just in case) so id say take the bold for a spin you may be really surprised what you find, dont think ill be going back to the tilt!!!

I agree about the reason there aren't any hacks for the BlackBerry and the CrackBerry community looks downs on hacks lol!!

I am about to get a new phone and it's down to these two. I'm pretty familiar with the iPhone. It's nice, but doesn't do many of the things I would like, plus I can't stand the thought of a locked down device. What I do like is the great internet experience and the speed of the UI. I have been looking at the Fuze for a while and have some questions.
What GPS options are you using?
Any way to remove the AT&T junk?
If I get a cooked ROM (I barely know what that is right now), does it void the warranty? And can I download the original ROM to reflash back to original?
Any way to lock the touchscreen and front buttons to avoid accidentally answering the phone?
Did someone reallyfigure out how to turn off the PTT button?
What do you not like about the Fuze?
Thanks in advance!
HTC WM6.1 phone vs. iPhone
I have both HTC phone and Iphone...
The iphone is a great device, if you are a teenager and most of your use is text message buddies, play games, surf the net etc. I would certainly enjoy one like it if I am on vacation in the US. The iPhone is locked to AT&T only, so if you are going overseas, like I do from time to time, your iphone becomes either a brick, or a $$$ hungry device if you dare use it and pay roaming.
My 14 years old enjoys my iphone a lot. It's cool. it's fun, it looks good, and it is important when you are 14...
Now if you buy it for business and for connectivity with an office, then the unlocked cooked roms are the answer. Yes, warranty is an issue if you use a cooked ROM, but there is always a way to put back the AT&T stock ROM. So unless you have failed the phone in a manner one can not re flash it, it is not a big deal. Flashing the phone is quite easy and the wiki on this forum is very helpful. For your GPS questions- you can use TomTom or iGO. Assuming you buy them, there is no monthly charge after. By using a cooked ROM the AT&T junk is no longer there, and as far as applications to load, well, it's a WM phone. Connectivity to OFFICE package is superb, and there isn't an application in the PC world that you can't find a PPC version of it (almost, anyways).
Locking screen and keys is simple, with high 3D graphics. Look around on the forum and you will find few.
PTT button works IF you pay AT&T for the servie. No one I know uses it. We all reprogramm this hard key to do something else. I don't think there is a real need for a PTT service (Nextel like) unless it is a company phone and there are a bunch of guys wanting their own channel of communications.
HTC , by definition, came up with a bunch of cool phones. Very reliable, long lasting, with nifty features. The good news is WM7 is around the corner, so it is going to be even better...
Enjoy your new phone, whatever you choose to have. this post is just one opinion, but you ask an unbiased opinion in the WM forum... none here is really crazy about the iphone...
Thanks. I'm a long way from 14. I will use it for some business (anyone know how to get Lotus Notes on this thing?), but mostly as a phone, some texting, some multimedia, personal email, and some internet surfing. Pretty mixed bag. This will be my first smartphone, so there will be some learning curve. I'm not a big fan of the iPhone, but it's more of distrust of how Apple handles things and the total loackdown they have on the device. We have several Apple products in our house, the wife loves them. Me, not so much. Nice stuff, I just prefer more choices in how I use my hardware.
if you are wanting to customize like you say you are, then yes you will want the touch pro. you will just need time to sit down and do some reading.
Yes you can remove att's bloatware, you will just need to flash a new rom.
ROM means read only memory it basically is just everything they will stay on your phone when you hard reset. A clean version of a rom would be something you would get directly from microsoft. But lets say you by a laptop from dell or hp, they will give you all kinds of crap that doesn't really have to do with the operating environment. You will get dell-ware or hp-ware.
Basically by flashing a rom you just have a choice in what you want on your ppc, there are all kinds of flavors of roms everything from the bare minimals of the phone to even run (super-clean) or a multimedia rich rom (there are even roms based around programs like manilla, throttlelauncher, htc home, ect)
Yes flashing a rom will void your warranty if its not an official Rom, but you can revert back to send in for warranty purposes.
The touch pro has an accelerometer (motion sensor). just one reason to go with the fuze over the x1.
Customize, customize, customize. Thats what we all do with our phones. My friends tells me i seem to have a new phone everytime i see them. All of this just takes some reading and may look daunting at first but you will get the hang of it quick enough.
let me know when you pick up your touch pro if you need some help on where to start.
----One more thing windows mobile7 is a little way out but wm6.5 should be out soon (which will be almost windows mobile 7 minus integration of zune)
Coming from a fuze owner...
I know this thread is somewhat old, but it's the third result if you search Google for "iphone vs. htc fuze," and I'd like to add my two cents for anyone else who has to make this choice.
I recently used my upgrade and got a Fuze. Before doing this, I did my research and read the comments about it being slow and clunky with the stock ROM, but that you had the ability to change almost anything with cooked roms, different applications, etc. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, so I didn't think I would mind. After weeks of trying to decide between the Fuze and the iPhone (with some consideration of the bb Bold), I sucked it up and got the Fuze.
I'm somewhat happy about my decision. Hardware-wise, the phone is amazing. The slide out QWERTY keyboard is awesome (although the keys are a little crammed), the phone looks slick IMO, and the weight is decent; it feels like it could take a little abuse. The camera is nice, the reception (even stock) is nice, etc.
Software-wise, the phone is quite clunky. I know it's been said to death, but Windows Mobile is an awful operating system. Some of the features that I like (e.g., the file explorer, 'right clicking,' and text selection) are wonderful; however, WM6.1 is not designed for touch. TouchFLO3D is nice, but it's just the outer coating. Once you touch the screen to read more texts, go to the file explorer, etc., however, you have to enter WM6.1 again.
I have also heard comments about there being a ton of applications for Windows Mobile. This is true, however, now that the iPhone is out, there has been a HUGE push to develop apps for that platform (e.g., better AIM clients, Facebook mobile, online banking, etc). The applications are in one place and easier to access (app store) and are more user-friendly/fun. Certain programs are also integrated better with the iPhone (e.g., Google Maps)
Opera Mobile (for internet browsing) is alright on the Fuze. It's better than the options for Blackberrys, but the iPhone has it completely beat in this department. Many sites don't work without a little tweaking (e.g., Google News), and some sites don't work at all (Bank of America online banking). I did notice that some sites will work if you switch over to Internet Explorer, but that's a pain.
I feel like HTC completely wasted their hardware on this. It would be an excellent phone if it ran on Android or even on their own OS.
The only type of person I can recommend this phone to is a business user who sends out a lot of emails, but doesn't like the Blackberry style keyboard.
If you're a business user and don't mind, get a Blackberry. It's the corporate standard. Even Obama has one!
If you are:
a consumer
a mac-user
someone who wants the best mobile internet experience
or just someone who wants to have fun with their phone right off the bat, and not have to completely tweak it
get the iPhone, G1 (another phone made by HTC), or Palm Pre when it comes out.
I don't completely hate the phone, I just dislike it enough to suck up the $20 restocking fee and get a new phone (probably an iphone).
I see how old this is... but after i got the red light of death on my tilt and its out of warranty... 376 bucks is a waste of cash for a known problem and crappy battery life. I thought about the Fuze but HTC pissed me off. I'm gonna get the iPhone hopefully it has a better battery so i dont have to charge it every night like my tilt! if not ill go old school and get a rzr... lol... thank you XDA it was fun while it lasted and i got alot of help along with ;earning really cool things about wm 6.1... peace
I am not using the Fuze but I am using the Kaiser, my wife uses the Hermes, and all our kids have the I-Phone. I borrow their I-Phones from time to time. Here are my observations.
I-Phone
The I-Phone is very slick. The best thing about the I-Phone is its size, weight, the size of the screen, and the simplicity of use. There's not a slicker more carefully designed phone out there. Anyone can use it with little trouble. It's very dependable. You ask then, "Why aren't you using an I-Phone"?
Windows Mobile Phone
I'm not using the I-Phone for several reasons. I'm a businessman. I have literally thousands of contacts on my phone. I can access them more quickly on my Kaiser than I can on the I-Phone. The Kaiser's QWERTY is flat out faster than typing on the screen (although one of my sons can type nearly as fast as I can on his I-Phone because of his thin fingers).
When I need information, I need it fast. When I'm in a meeting someone needs to find an address or anything on the web, I beat the I-Phone users to the punch all the time. Time is money.
I do speed tests with both the Kaiser and the I-Phone. The results on the two types of phones from our home are about the same on dslreports.com. However, I can get to the information I want faster with IE than I can with Safari. Yes, Safari on the I-Phone is great but I have to let the page load then blow up a portion of the page and move it around. This takes time.
3G signal is another area where the HTC phone beats the I-Phone. The HTC phones seem to pick up 3G signals in more places than the I-Phone. This may change as I-Phones improve. Just my observations.
I love the integration of Word, Excel, Power Point, etc, with WM6.1 It works very well.
There are still many things the I-phone cannot do.
1) There's no cut and paste. Yea, I know it's coming. But how well will it work.
2) It cannot handle adobe .pdf files. I get these sent to me all the time in emails. They're almost always business related. I can read them and respond quickly where ever I am.
3) There's no stereo bluetooth so one has to look like the retards Apple shows on its commercials bouncing around to the music wearing wired earphones. I use my stereo bluetooth headsets all the time with my HTC phones. I can listen to music and not miss any important calls. I can walk all over my office with the phone in my office and still get calls.
4) I can use my HTC phones on several networks in the U.S. and elsewhere.
5) There's no removable memory or batteries. The EU will force Apple to make I-Phones with removable batteries. But I still like being able to keep certain data on a storage card.
6) The charger the I-Phone uses is proprietary. I like fact that the HTC devices use a standard USB charger.
In conclusion, the I-Phone is definitely a game changing device. It's a great device for kids, the elderly, and those who won't or cannot become computer savvy. Eventually, the I-phone may catch up to the HTC devices to the point I'd consider one.
The fact of the matter is that the HTC devices are more powerful devices and are especially more powerful for the business user.
Just wondering why you chose Fuze/Touch-pro over Iphone.
For me 3 major reasons in order of importance:
Size: I just cannot accept the size of an Iphone. I believe in a small device with great capabilities that will nicely fit in my pocket.
Bluetooth Stereo: Bluetooth A2DP support was NOT native to Iphone at that time. Did not want to add and an UGLY connector to get bluetooth music streaming either
Not an Iphone fan boy: Never carried an Ipod nor had a Mac. Its too overrated and is more of a fashion statement. I just cant see the cool factor in Apple products.
Whats your reason?
#1: this forum
#2: can't type texts without a hardware keyboard when i'm drunk
#3: tp is my 3rd htc phone
price would also be a factor
iphones without a tariff is a lot more expensive then a touch pro without a tariff
Welll, in random order
#: xda-devs support
#: custom roms
#: HTC user since 2005
#: size and h/w keyboard
and most of all
#: never was a fan of (maybe powerful but) overrated trendy devices over powerful business ones, end of story.
iPhone may be a "powerful" device, which can provide a similar experience to WM (or even better, that's a subjective matter). However the fact that the device itself is locked, and does not allow you to experience it fully (and I mean things which are supposed to be standard in smartphones, like multitasking) without jailbreaking it, tells me one thing and one thing only: that Apple does not respect it's customers.
For me it was a matter of carrier, and the 5-way navigator, because aside from those factors my Touch Pro is almost the same as an iPhone anyways with all the skins and mods
1. iPhone is 44% higher than my Touch Pro discounted Sprint monthly Everything Plan.
2. iPhone doesn't have a physical keyboard vs. huge Touch Pro keys.
3. iPhone has zero customability. "There's an app for that" means nothing to me. Energy 6.5 with Sense2.5 ROM means a whole lot more.
Sadly I feel the opposite way. I'm thinking of selling my Fuze just because support for it sucks lets face it. Theres no where near the amount of developers for windows mobile as there is for the iphone. I find myself using my ipod touch way more than my fuze and the only thing I cant do on my ipod is make calls. Sure theres no hardware keyboard and its nice to have one but I could live without. One thing that kills me the most is the screen, its almost unbearable using my phone after I use my ipod but thats to be expected since they're different tech. But over all I find myself not liking my phone more and more everyday and I dont think its going to change. I think Im going to submit to apple with the next refresh of the iphone simply because Apple is the juggernaut of smart phones at this time. Until they find a way to standardize android its not going to shine, I truly think fragmentation is going to kill it and if it doesn't kill it, it will always be that other OS. And WP7 is a mess. For one I dont have a Facebook or any other social networking crap, nor do I have an xbox so all that integration is useless to me. Not to mention that the UI looks terrible. But thats my look on things and unfortunately the way things keep going I dont think its going to change.

I'm sorry.....but April fools was on the 1st.
For myself it's all of what this guy says (from 3:40-4:00) in this iphone review "The Gadget Show" on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bumP10hUaVs, and more.
When I think of iphone...I can't help of think of the Will Smith movie iRobot. I have thoughts of Apple trying to brain wash me into thinking that it's the only phone I need and I don't need to think for myself because "there's an app for that". It want's me to drop my guard and completely trust that it can run my life with only finger swipes across the screen yet.....it will not let me have a close relationship with by shutting me out of it's inner workings (battery replacement, removable storage). It try's to keep me hanging by a thread just strong enough to stay attached for a new version with "innovative" abilities like "copy and paste". It's true colors are hard to see through it's colorful ads and apps.
1: size
2: its need to always be on the net
3: can't sync calendar, contacts w/out using iTunes, which I cannot stand
4: can't multitask apps
I have both a fuze and an iPhone 3G (from my son when he moved to 3Gs.) Both phones are jail broken, so I decided to use the iPhone with an international SIM while traveling. I was really (&**&(*^( t'd off when I noticed that it always connects, thus incurring international data roaming charges. There's no way to make it not "call home" for one reason or another (checking if there's something new in app store, etc.) unless you tweak connectivity, block almost every app, or install some "firewall" to block all traffic. That just sucks if you travel a lot. ATT warned me, but I didn't think it was that bad.
International roaming data charges are nothing to mess with. I've never used an iphone, but I've heard that many of the apps are web-based widgets. One of the problems with not having things like a native file explorer is that if you download an app, you can't look in program files to see what the hell you just downloaded. You'd know if it was just a web app on winmo pretty easily, but I'm sure it's hard to keep track of everything loaded on an iphone.
I went from an iphone 3G to a Fuze to a 3GS to a Tilt2 back to a Fuze with a Bold 9000 in there at some point as well.
I can't do without the physical keypad. I email on the go a lot with my phone, and I just can't get used to virtual keyboards. Just can't do it. I'm also a sports nut, so browser navigating ability needs to be on point, meaning I need a touch screen. Now, I'll admit the iPhone's capacative touch screen beats the hell out of the pressure sensitive ones, although they'll get a lot better with some of the tweaks and ROMs available. There's no lag when you use the iphone's screen (although the newest ROMs for the Fuze have done a great job closing that gap, but it's still very much present). I miss that and the myriad of apps.
I really do hate Apple, what they did with the priority bandwidth with AT&T, and the fact they can't and absolutely won't support flash, along with that internal battery and no storage card. They could easily provide these features, but they don't simply because they don't HAVE to in order to sell the product. But, the iphone does what it does incredibly well. I'll concede to that.
I went back to the Fuze from my Tilt2 because I was pretty pissed that the hardware wasn't really upgraded much between those models. That was an unpleasant surprise. Also, the Fuze is SOLID. It's a beast, the tracks don't have tight tolerances, and the case is thick with robust corners. Plus, the Android development for the Fuze seemed to be further along than for the Tilt2. Also, when typing on the hardware keyboard for the Raphael, your thumbs do all the moving, and your hands don't. The Rhodium's bigger layout is nicer in that you hit the wrong key much less; however, you're moving your hands a lot too. I didn't like that. ROMs are also getting ridiculously good for WinMo devices.
Let's be honest; what the iPhone does, it does incredibly well, and if I didn't have needs (HW keypad) that it didn't meet, I would still have it, even though the Apple logo itself makes me want to kill a hippie every time I see it.
1. I'm used to Windows Mobile, having used it on a PDA for several years
2. Getting a refurbished Fuze through AT&T with an Employee Purchase and a 2 year contract brought the price of the Fuze down to a rather attractive $0.
Fate was kind to me. I'm glad to have stumbled upon the Fuze.
Mainly the Hardware Keyboard, but all-in-all, I simply love HTC devices.
Oh, and the Hardware Specs were actually pretty good for the Fuze, not the best, but for a device with a hardware keyboard, not bad.
I originally bought my Fuze because of the hardware keyboard. 6 months later, I bought an iPhone 3GS. I liked the Fuze for the most part, I just couldn't take WM anymore. With the stock firmware, my battery would not last a day. Timlol's stock like firmware made the battery life bearable and the device much more usable. But in the end, it was the limitations of WM that made me switch. It is nice having a browser that works, a mail client that can display messages and not move to the next message when you accidently move your finger sideways, a well stocked app store and a touchscreen that actually responds properly to touch.
I still have my Fuze and will use it to play around with the current Android project, but for day to day use as a phone and data device, the iPhone is it.
On your poll it was a hard toss-up between "Hate Apple products" and the "Other options (cooked ROMs, Android etc)".
My biggest factor was that it was more open to open source and cracked (aka free) software, and more moddifications that could be done to the firmware. The reason this could be done is because its not an Apple product.
