Cant download cabs off rapidshare? - G1 Android Development

File type not supported!? Eh? So, if android doesn;t use the file, it won't download it!? I'm gonna try again, but if this is the case, it's blatant bull**** and almost censorship area of wankness!
or does the browser freak out with RS? anyone else confirm this?
thanks, oh. and before some asks, my ISP is down, so i needed to dl a cab for my athena from my g1, as my athena is simlocked atm.

Its not file share. If android doesnt know the file type it wont download. Ive tried downloading jar files. Same thing, even with java installed.
Its the same in android file manager, if you put a file on your sd card and theres no application to open it it just says file reading not supported

what a pile of [email protected]!

Nothing to do with sensorship. The android operating system is very new. Suppost for other types of files will come later, along with more features.
Look at bluetooth. You only have bluetooth headset support. Its not locked, other forms of bluetooth communication will be made availible as updates come out.
The browser wont download not because google is saying no, but becuase theres nothing that can use that file type. Whats the point of downloading if you cant open it.

Actually agree. This OS is still very new and only been in existance for a little over a year and development is still in the infancy stage. Give it a little awhile when the ball gets really rolling, then maybe we can soon start to enjoy Android a whole lot more.

CABinet files are for Microsoft.... so why the heck would you want to download anyway?

You can't install Windows Mobile apps on the Android...

... idiots.

Not sure how it is censorship or blatant BS. Think about it when you download something on your actual computer and the file type is not supported it asks you how to open it. On firefox it asks you what you wanna do. This makes perfect sense. Especially seeing as they are still working on the OS.

cab luvin' dvd player

sooo, because i'm a cheap basta*d i'm going to buy a dvd player with gps for my car on ebay and i've noticed a lot of them, or even all of them?, run on windows ce. So here's my question, will any cab run on windows ce? i mean, winmo 5, 6, 6.1 and everything before that ran on windows ce right? so how easy would it be?
Picture this, a 8-16gb sd card, jam it into the card reader and start up S2P (slide to play) for one bad ass cover flowin' music center! obviously other thing would be useful to, and since these bad boys are only like $300 buckaroos it isn't a bad idea, especially for us gadget pr0n guys right?
what about flashing a rom from a SD card (only heard rumors/speculation about that, probably not possible)? or just loading up manila 2d/3d via throttle launcher and getting the think looking pimp? no phone antenna, no problem, just sync it through the bluetooth and make calls (new app required i'm guessing, or at least adapt/beautify some existing cab/exe). get internet sharing to work on it somehow and you're seriously looking at a pretty cool carputer. well, with all i'd want to use one for anyways. Who wants to do more than what a good rom on one of our phones can do while in a car anyways?
I'm not sure if it will run out of the box like that, with nothing more than some cabs on and sd card, or if you have to do something else (file explorer and whatnot), but i figured xda would be the best place to start for the right answers. I've never gone wrong before with you guys, so speak up! let's see what we come up with!
or at least give me a link to a better place if you know of one and i'll get off my soapbox...
anyways, i've got access to a few vogues, a wing/herald, and a touch pro to do testing with, along with the dvd player/win CE unit--in about a week or two that is--so i'm more than happy to put it on the table.
Man i hope you guys are reading this and as pumped as i am.
anyways, pm me with anything, or i'll just keep looking to see if anyone else posts here

does anyone know if this would even work?
This could work.
First of all, you need to look up how to disable OEM's shell (factory "software" of the player) and enable Windows CE interface.
Next you either install Handheld PC apps, or install libraries which allow you to run applications from PocketPC.
Myself I tried it with a cheap GPS. Yeah, WinCE + apps are a major step up from maps only, but it is not anywhere close to even a non-phone PPC. Because of, for example, lack of WiFi. The big advantage is, that I can install any WinCE compatible map instead of outdated OEM maps.
Hope I am right, and this helps
Where did you find information about your GPS? I just got one, model# TID-7626GPS that I'm going to try to mod, but i can't find information about how to get the WinCE.
if you could pass on any links to places i could look it would help a ton. For how do disable the factory OEM and those libraries?
First you need to find out real manufacturer of your device. I googled model name you said but there's nothing
Or, connect that device via ActiveSync (yes, the same) and see if there's a file \Windows\autorun.inf
If it exists, backup it. Then change it so it will load \Windows\explorer.exe
That should unlock WinCE UI.
However, the file may not exist. In this case you have to look for instructions over the web.

The Wingster - ROMs and Programs for the T-Mobile Wing

The Wingster: Access to all of the best Programs, ROMs, and Hacks for your T-Mobile Wing
As many of you already know, I created a website called "The Wingster", which is dedicated to everything for the T-Mobile Wing.
Programs - All programs are tested for compatibility with the Wing, any bugs or issues are reported, screenshots are created, features are listed, and more. I'm making all the apps on XDA accessable by the common user!
ROMs - There are a lot of ROMs out there, and since the cooks are busy creating newer versions, they don't always have time to make a nice detailed description page about their ROM. So I do it for them! Don't spend all of your time digging through a lengthy thread, if there was anything important that happened, it will be on The Wingster!
More - The Wingster is the place for everything T-Mobile Wing. If anything important happens about the phone, I'll be sure to tell everyone. The Wing II (HTC Touch Pro 2) will also be added to the site once I get it this July!
Enjoy using The Wingster!
Sneak Peak: A Mobile Wingster is coming in the near future! You can already visit the page, but I'd recommend not, because I'm still working on it. If you'd like an idea of how the mobile page will look in it's final version, visit this page. I know The Wingster is already freakin fast at loading, but I just wanted to make an even better mobile version!
And donations are always welcome! I've gotta pay $15 a year for the awesome website domain, so you've all got about 10 months to come up with $15 so we can keep the site! Just kiddin, I can pay that myself, but it'd be nice if I didn't have to. So yea, send the donations via Pay Pal, here: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=5401195
I hope I've helped all of you! And if anyone cannot donate with money, a nice reply saying how I helped you is always welcome! Just knowing that I'm helping everyone here makes me even more motivated to make the site better!
Thanks everyone, and thanks to Ivan especially, his awesome ROMs inspired me to make The Wingster.

ok i downloaded the flash center unzipped into my desktop. downloaded the nbh file. dragged the nbh file into the RUU folder, inside the flash center folder. Connected my phone and my computer through usb, and put my phone into flight mode. While it was syncing. Your direction on the wingster website said to run the USBL.exe file. But I can only fine the USPL.exe file. I thought you just messed up on the letters so i ran the USPL. exe file that i found in the flash center folder. The command line appears and after 75 percent of the 2nd step begins my phone blanks out white. And then the PDA utility pops out. After clicking finish, and then it saids something error check your utility. I did it like three times. Sometimes my phone pops up this little penguin and then freezes. But after all those attempts my phone still works normal. Can you please help me. Not clear about something just ask me. thanks.

Huh, yea, idk why it's not working. Umm it might be possible that your phone is a lower SPL than 4. Try this out:
Have your phone turned on like normal
Hold down the Camera button, and while holding it, press and release the Soft Reset button. Then once a new screen comes up, release the Camera button. This should bring up a colorscreen (Red, Green, and Blue), if not, tell me.
Check what SPL number you are. It should be over 4. If it is under 4, then we have to try something differently. Also check what IPL you have, and if it's under 4, then tell me again.
If you are over 4 on both of those numbers, then everything should be fine. Idk why it wouldn't work.
Are you using the default T-Mobile ROM (Still shouldn't matter)
Does ActiveSync work normally with your computer???
Answer and do those things that I listed out, then tell me the results and such. Thanks.
Restart the PC. It the PC not allowing the connection.
Also try:
Disabling your firewall.
Disabling and re-enabling USB support in ActiveSync.

The files should be fine, I used to use them and they worked perfectly for me. Are you by chance using Windows 7?
Ignore the "disabling the firewall" thing, because that should have no effect.
So yea, are u running Windows 7, Vista, or XP? And is it the 64-Bit or the 32-Bit version??
Don't put that HaRET file on your phone. It'll do nothing. The Penguin is actually part of the bootloader proccess or something, but running that HaRET file will solve nothing. And I have no clue what that HARET file is. And I've never seen a penguin on my screen before.

Idk, you could re-download it again, but all the files are in that one folder. You then placed the downloaded ROM file into the RUU folder there? Thats all you should have to do.
Which ROM are you installing, anyways?

I donwnloaded the stable 6.1 version. I never had to unzip the file was i soppose it just automatically saved on to my desktop. And then i dragged it into the RUU file. Is the WM 6.1 soppose to be the NBH file? Because in my folder it says 7Z file type. I have another file but it saids NB file type. is this wrong?

[Q] Going to CES.... What Would You Like?

CES is upon us (well soon) and I will be attending the conference along with about 300,000 others. However, I doubt there are many others with the intention of coming back with a bit of honey as I am.
Motorola will supposedly have their honeycomb tablet there, among other manufacturers I'm sure. What would be the most surefire way to bring back some bits and pieces of the software for us to tear apart?
My plan upfront was to create a zip file of the entire /system partition and then upload it to a server. Chances are whatever I do, I'll have to do it fast. If I'm crowding a device, it will probably look suspicious. What are the most surefire ways for me to pull system data off of the device, compress it, and upload it in a usable format? Obviously a nandroid backup is out of the equation, as is anything that will take more than 5 minutes to accomplish. I think I could probably upload the file in the background of the device, so the time I have will be for making the copy.
So what do you think? Any software I should look into that will help the cause? Anything else that I might be overlooking? Also, totally into some feedback here if anyone thinks this is just a dumb idea to begin with.
tl;dr: whats the quickest way to archive an entire android system partition and upload it to a server using tools only available on the device?
dude, you GO buddy! just don't get caught huh?
ok, so I looked into what this is going to take and I think i have a game plan. Someone please step up and tell me if this is out of line:
Assuming I can get to actually play with the device: download a terminal emulator. I should have the apk prepared and ready to go on my own personal server along with a few backup versions.
Download a binary from my server that allows zip access. I should be able to use gzip or bzip2, both are in busybox, so that might be another step. Assuming that I get the binaries for those, the next step would be creating a /bin/ file in the /data/ directory. (I am not sure if this will work. I need to do more research, but I think that would be in the path.) I would have to do this all from /data/ because obviously, I wont have root access (I think... this would be so much easier if moto decided to leave su on the phone )
Run gzip or bzip2 on the /system/ partion, saving to /sdcard/. Using the browser on the phone, upload this file to mediafire or similar filesharing service. Or, better yet, bluetooth it to another personal device nearby. My estimations say that would take about 15 minutes though to complete the transfer.
Anyone see any flaws?
Im kinda of a turb0 n00b but I love this idea, hopefully superuser is on the device, the place will be packed, just find a buddy or two to help distract the other demo hosts. Hopefully it will be crowded enough where you can just dissappear if something goes wrong.
I love the idea and I hope it works. Sorry I couldn't offer any technical advice.
if they suspect something just start rebooting the device hopefully to cover it up, maybe load something on your server where you can type a command and hopefully wipe any logs/traces of tampering etc.
man, I hope this works!
Last year, Moto's booth had a good distraction vs employee ratio. They had a stage set up in the middle of the booth with performers doing amazing juggling and stupid human tricks. Distracted almost everyone. Should give me my five minutes.
The only thing I'm worried about is that the tablet will be under glass and not user handleable. We will see what happens.
I'd say try to background everything unobtrusively so you can leave and still have it running, then check mediafire frequently so that Moto doesn't have enough time to find what you've done and issue a takedown notice. It's pretty easy to mount an ftp server in Windows, so once it's done uploading you could whip out a laptop and download it directly to your server. I would also like to offer my services for mirroring. If you need access to my server from CES, PM me and I'll give you an account with r/w access to a separate directory (can't be too careful) so you can upload.
Oh, and if it has GApps, just download Astro and zip /system into /sdcard or wherever, then bluetooth it to yourself.

Will astro handle a zip operation? And do you think its capable of zipping the entire system partition?
And even if it didnt have gapps, I could grab the astro .apk and have it ready on my server when I get there.
That would be WAY easier than downloading the binaries from busybox and running all of this through CLI (although less fun )
I think I need to find a more graceful way to get the file onto a server once I've dumped it. Know of any ftp applications?
On a semi-related note, there are announcements left and right about honeycomb from other manufacturers besides Moto that will have goods at CES. that means that if the moto tabs are locked down or my process fails there, I can try with other vendors!
If at CES they have a open WiFi network you could use a FTP service on your phone and dump data onto there, so that way you can stay untraceable.
I wish I could help you with ziping the system or whatever but I have no experience with Android....yet .
Good Luck!
If there is such a high level of interest why doesn't moto just make it available?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Well, bad news. According to Moto's PR, they wont have the tablet on display at this year's CES. It's just "not ready".
That is not to say, however, that there will not be other Honeycomb tablets available. I still have my tools prepared and I'm ready to get what ever I can. Project Honeypot is still a go!
project honeypot... lol
man I wish you the best!
Well..., anything?
How'd it go dude?

[TOOL] Online .apk installer (for the real newbie's)

Today a friend of mine wanted to install a .apk file on his Android phone and he did not have a clue on how to do this.
So.. After some hours PHP coding here I created an online tool for him (and other newbies).
Basically the users selects the .apk he wants to install, and points his Android camera to the given QR code.
Please have a look at http://bit.ly/e4mLXu , and let me know what you think.
Some things like About and FAQ are still missing, but will be added later this week.
Thank you.
It's a good concept but the site layout is so unnecessary, you don't need all those unneeded images and links in the website that has nothing to do with its function.

Thank you for your input.. I guess that I did go over the top a bit on the design.... But I was really in my zone when doing the page layout
I'm re-doing it at the moment, and I will try to keep it as KISS as possible.
Once again thank you for your input.
Awesome idea. A friend of mine just got her first Android phone, and is pretty clueless about installing APKs, even though I rooted her phone and walked her through it with Root Explorer. This will make it much simpler for her.
Good idea! Can save some time. It`s already saved in my favorites!
file manager, astro..
this is for first class rookies
Sorry but have I missed something here??
Why on earth would ANYBODY really actually need to use this? (no offence) Has your friend lost the plot?
Why would you go through all this instead of simply installing a file manager liek ASTRO via the market?
a) Copy apk to sd card/phone
b) install ASTRO File Manager from market.
c) Install apk
How difficult is that?
If I have missed something here please explain because I cant think of any scenario where this would be an advantage.

Ok so if you where not at home and didnt have a USB cable, you could simply email the apk to yourself or use your friends card reader/card slot/dongle etc. There are a million different ways that are much quicker then this. Not trying to dis OP/site etc just suprised that this has been made front page news?
I love how quickly people try to smash an idea just cause it's not their way...what if the user doesn't have a file manager installed? Left their USB cable? Doesn't want to login to a webmail account for security reasons? There are tons of reasons to use this...I say scale it up, and somehow work out longer time periods for the QR codes (Maybe only for registered users?)...besides, it's always nice to have some functional PHP code that could be used in other projects.
I just used this and it is awesome! thank you thank you thank you!
sorry, but its useless. also harder and takes longer time than just copying to sd.
not everybody gets the idea of Astro/File manager.
this is just another way to get to the goal.
sometimes, even if you try to show them a better way of doing things, they still prefer another way which may seem not logical/takes a longer time.
This is a neat idea. it might not appeal to everybody, but it may help somebody.
I don't get this either. I email the apk to my gmail and there's an option in Gmail on your phone for you to install the app.
Hey, i found great use for this. I downloaded a couple of APKs and needed to quickly dl them, and install them. Too lazy to connect to my computer or email it. So much faster.
One cosmetic issue: when I upload an apk the name changes to a crazy long string. Any way to shorten that? I realize you can't keep the original apk name but a simple numbering system (each new upload +1 id kind of a thing) or whatever else might work better. It's not required, but just my input love it!
niceeee!!! this is exactly what i wanted!

Using Bluetooth to push files

Hey just curious if anyone else does this but me.
Well a few days back I was too lazy to walk to my bedroom and get my USB cable off the charger. So I paired the phone w/ the BT on my PC and started pushing .zips. So now whenever I DL a new Kernel/Modem/Theme etc... I just use BT to push it to the phone and then just installing everything through CWM right out of the BT folder on the phone.
I know this is no technilogical discovery or anything, just seeing if anyone else is doing this
I use it once in a while as well, when my USB cable is far away. However i only do that with small updates (kernels), as I find BT too slow for anything else. For a few MBs it is faster then going to find my cable.
Yea, the bluetooth transfer is really convenient and I do use it for random files I want to grab off my cpu, but in your case with downloading CWM flashable files, why not just go to the website and download directly to your phone and eliminate the extra steps of pairing and transferring? Is it a download speed problem? No wifi?
I ask only because I used to use the bluetooth to transfer files, but the bigger the file, the longer the transfer time, and with my chronic case of A.D.D., I'd be waiting for it to finish transferring to my phone, then play angry birds to pass the time, then go out to smoke, and with my amazing luck and skill I'd take one step outside of my bluetooth range, interrupt the transfer process at like 96% and kick myself in the ass lol.
I just find it easier to enable wifi, navigate to the download page and get the files I need, downloaded straight to my phone so all I'd have to do is get into CWM and flash it, or open Androzip and extract the files that I need.

Yea, can never rule out that it could be the rom, or you just had a bad flash... Meaning that everything appears to be running like it should, but once you start digging into the phone and start trying features that you normally don't use on a daily basis, that's where there's a bug.
So you can try and figure out if it's a file problem from the website, which I highly doubt, or you can bite the bullet, flash to stock, master clear, flash your rom of choice again and pray for the best.
Or, before you do all that funky jazz, get the dolphin browser from the market and install, navigate and try to downlaod.
Just for ****s and giggles.
Never tried bluetooth but I use the app called SwiFTP that is free from the market. Basically you can FTP to your phone from your computer over wifi.
