Hi,
since I'm running REALLY LOW at internal storage I tinker with the idea of putting some apps to storage card. Thus I'm wondering what if I reflashed my Herald someday. Will I have to reinstall those apps as well or will I be able start them right from SD? What about the app's [email protected] Windows folder?!
Cheers
Hello
If you decide to do a hard reset, then you must reinstall all the programs in SD ..
Whenever you change ROM or you make a hard reset, you'll need to reinstall all CAB
It depends on whether the CAB installs files to different locations, and whether the CAB contains registry entries. Check your CAB file using MSCEINF to see if it copies files to the windows folder and if it has registry entries. Also check the [DefaultInstall] section of the .inf file for the entry 'SelfRegisterDll'. If your CAB file contains any of these things then you'll have to reinstall it after a hard reset.
A large percentage of CABs only contain a single file with no registry entrys and would not have to be reinstalled after a hard reset.

Hi J03M4N,
With your help (Thanks) there is a new version for MSCEInf (version 2.6) :
Contributions of version 2.6
• Backslash added in rebuilt Inf file, at item [SourceDisksNames], if specified folder has not one at the beginning.
• Due to a bug in new version of mshtml.dll in Internet Explorer 8 Beta for drawing a background image in ListView, I have taken away the background image in the Open Cab Dialog Box.
• There is now a new column in the tab "Folders", with real values written in the CAB without transformation of %CExx%.
Download links in my signature.
not all apps have to be reinstalled. even apps which require registry keys might write them when you run the app from the SD card without installing it.
but remember that not all apps can be installed on the SD card..
Which can't? Any specific ones?
Cheers
i can't name you all the apps which can't
some can, some can't.
for instance, you can't install iGO8 on your storage card...
just install the app on your device and choose Storage Card... (which doesn't always appear as an option)... you can check after installing if it installed on your card or not.
max, uninstall.
if you have installed to your storage card you can just put links to them in the windows\startmenu\ folder
theres an app for that

Hi, I'm looking for more info on how the memory is partitioned between storage and programs. I don't quite understand how a hard reset is equivalent to a reinstall, and how it works.
Is there a site or book with more information on this? Any help or pointer would be greatly appreciated!
a pocketpc have ram and rom
rom is read only memory
the os is located in rom
and storage and application memory is in ram
how much you want to have free for application ram
and how much you want to use as storage is up to you using the memory slider
a hardreset or too long without batt
clear the ram leaving the os which is in rom
as the only thing on the pocketpc
which is why it's the same thing as a reinstall
because all the stuff you put on it are gon
leaving what the maker of the device put in the rom
but with 2005 things have changed a bit
here some of the flash rom is used for storage
and all ram is used for application memory
(though buzz and the lads made it so some of the ram can be used for stroage on older HTC devices which otherwise only have 32MB)
here a hardreset dont mean a reinstall
if you want to clear the device to default you have to format
the storage from inside the bootloader
I think what he meant is the one shown in "Settings"->"Memory"->"Main"
Think of the "Storage" as the hardisk of your PC and "Program" as the RAM of your PC. For WM5, when you soft reset your unit, the "Program" memory will be cleared off and program will be loaded again into this "Program" memory.
As for the "Storage", it is the `hardisk` where you have your OS installed. The OS is kept in the ROM (which I don't think is part of the "Storage"), and it is installed into your "Storage" everytime you perform a hard reset. (e.g. the "Storage" will be wipe clearn upon a hard reset). Anything that you do, e.g. edit file, add contact, etc. will be recorded/saved into this "Storage".
Thanks for the replies. So what I see when I browse the device, including the 'windows' folder, that's a copy of the operating system, and the original master copy is in the ROM?
So theoretically, I could go and delete the whole windows folder, perform a hard reset, and everything would be fine?
Has anyone already tried to see what could be reasonnably removed from the windows folder in order save 'storage' space?
Cheers!
no whats in the windows dir is the os which is stored in the rom
you cant remove things in the rom

I'll reply to my own question in order to close this thread and make it useful to others:
(from pocketpcdubai)
The Universal comes with 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM as compared to its predecessors who had the exact opposite.
The 128MB ROM is divided into 2 parts:
1) OS + Extended ROM (around 84MB)
2) Storage (remaining 43.5MB as shown above

HI
Yes... Simple..
Regards
It doesnt work, it says something about not being able to find the indicated storage card. How do i use this with my mini sd inside my G3 wizard? with WM6 "the real thing" flashed to it,
Its not working for me either... I copied the files from the compressed folder and into the root of my mini SD card and with the default settings I clicked "Activate" and I got the following error: "can't open the selected card/disk device". What am I missing?
try other version of wm5storage then... one of them must work.
and make SR after install to be sure, if its not working...
cannot check, but theres version, that works...1.73 works, i think:

Are you copying WM5torage to your SD Card? Try and copy into My Device\Prgram Files\WM5torage and then try and activate it... If I'm not mistaken access to the SD card is lost on the Wizard if you enable WM5torage.. Thus having the application installed on the SD card cannot grant access to the SD Card because WM5torage itself (or perhaps other apps) are currently hogging access to the SDCard

Yes, this is correct and that simple...
I copied it to program files on the storage memory and it still doesn't work. Same error comes up, and its version 1.73

You've got both the WM5torage.exe AND the DLL and you installed from CAB and restarted as it demanded right?
yes I have both the .exe and .dll but I don't have a cab to install it and I did not restart.

Install it on the device. Not the storage card.
Like what was said by TipEx "Try and copy into My Device\Prgram Files\WM5torage and then try and activate it..."
i don't have cab to install it, i just copy it from the zip file to my device but it still doesnt work. do i start this before i connect a usb cable or while its connected?
Both order should not have problem.
However despite I can run wm5torage and connect to desktop successfully (Built into WM6 Underground), the connection is very slow (<20kb/s) and unstable (displaying I/O error while copying), I don't know what the problem is.

HTH HAND (if not let me know)

Hello guys,
I have a small question. It is maybe a silly one but I can't find the answer.
I have Copilot Live 8 installed (so 2 folders on my SD card: 'copilot' and '2577').
Everytime I flash my ROM, Copilot tries to auto-install itself, but fails (via autorun in the 2577 folder).
So everytime, I have to connect my HD2 to my PC and replace the 2577 folder with the original one. And only then it works.
But how can I avoid to connect my ppc to my PC and replace 2577.
There should be another way, an easiest way, right?
Many thanks for your assistance
Had the same problem
Just delete the 2577 folder form the sd card & keep the copilot cab elsewhere on the card.
After rom flash just install the cab: select sd card as location everytime, that way all your previous settings, poi's etc remain.
Now I wish I didn't have to reenter the license key after each flash
Edit: the 2577 folder is not needed. its the copilot folder that's important & the cab
Thank you Harry for your kind answer.
Actually I am sure there should be an easiest way....
For instance, when I just replace the 2577 folder (which means I have to connect to my PC ) I don't have to enter the license key again.
At least, not to have to enter the license key is a good point.
PS: Maybe a solution would consist to save the original 2577 folder somewhere else on the SD card, and replace the former one with it after a flash. But I don't know if it will work. Also it wastes some memory space.
I really do not understand why Copilot's Autorun cannot do the job
how to desinstall complitely the original copilot?
how to uninstall completely the original copilot?
thanks

Hi!
I've got a problem with my HTC Desire.
Today I've found a new upgrade for my phone. I've downloaded it but when it tries to install the upgrade, it say that there isn't enough space in the memory's phone.
So I moved all the apps on the SD, but is still not enough.
How can I free some memory? I could delete the cache of the older upgrade or something else?
Or there's an app to check which app is still on the phone but I could move them on the SD?
Please, help me!
Do you have pictures and videos? If so, check if they are on the SD card and not on your internal memory. Cleaning your cache helps, and try deleting your text messages threads.
on a Samsung Galaxy S.

I've already moved all my photo on the SD card and I removed all the useless text messages... but how can I clean my cache?
I was looking for some app, but I found only apps that requires root, and I don't want to root my phone.
Thank you!
I can't believe I have to make an hard reset to install an upgrade!!
It's crazy!
GUYS I have two question
I will really appreciate it if you answered it ......
Q1:IF I already have android how can I upgrade my MALGDR from 1.1 to 1.3?
Q2:what is the best NAND rom for HTC HD2?
thanks for spending your time reading my Message
Not enough free space
I have a Samsung Captivate. I do not have Root Explorer. My phone has been rooted. I have Super Manager. I wanted to change a parameter in the settings.db file. I was able to do that on my desktop. I want to swap this new file with the old Settings.db file. The dbdata directory does not show up on my desktop. So I have tried to cut and paste the changed file which resides in the sdcard folder. So I need to go from that folder to where the orig Settings.db file resided. When I get to the point of pasting I get an error saying that I don't have enough free space. This file is only 57KB and I have roughly 12 GB of free space on SD card. 3.7GB internally. Any ideas how to correct the error.
Note: I don't have "Root Explorer" because I do not want to give Google Checkout access to my bank.
Where I should put converted files? The wikiconvert made one folder ''wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_idx'' with ''segments'' and 3 files ''wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_1.lwk'', ''wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_2.lwk'', ''wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_3.lwk'', when I put them on my sdcard the application give me terminate ,,No wikipedia detected. Please load a wikipedia offlina on sdcard. More info in [page adress]. Wikipedia english language is 8Gb''
My wikipedia dump is polish.
Thanks You!
I am still trying to get this to work as the screenshots suggests it should be a really nice reader.
Does anyone know more about this?
Here is a link btw. http://www.leobueno.net/PaginaProyectoSoft.php?id=WIKI_ANDROID
Sry, for double post but i just managed to get that thing to work!
Its easy, just copy all generated files including the idx folder and the "wiki.tag" file to the root of your sd card.
Works like a charm.
Thanks for figuring that out, I've been wondering where to put files for the Leo reader. Can I ask if you've found it's possible to put some or all of the lwk files somewhere other than on the sdcard? Alas I don't have 8GB free on my sdcard for the English files, but I could put most of them in /mnt/emmc on my nook color (CM7).

1. pages-articles.xml
2. segments
3. wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_1.lwk
4. wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_2.lwk
5. wiki_prefix_like_enwiki_3.lwk

How can I get the "wiki.tag" file?
I just put all files the converter generated on the sd card. Try converting the dump again and keep track of all the files and directories it generates. Those belong on the sd card.
I have found a better solution yesterday, though:
The Aard Dictionary Reader can be used to read the wikipedia as well. Formatting is a lot better than with the leobueno reader - in fact it looks exactly like the original wikipedia. It also includes tables, math formulas and a few images wich show rendered content like the periodic table - all in the exact way it looks on your desktop.
Its also possible to load multiple dictionarys (e.g. more than one wikipedia language, wikiquotre and wiktionary) and search through all of them at the same time.
Converting xml-dumps is only possible with linux at the moment, but you can download converted versions in many languages directly from thir site.
You can get the free and open source .apk here.

i have no idea where to type: "wikiconvert "your downloaded and extracted xml file" -owiki_prefix_like_enwiki -n" to generate .lwk files, im on WinXP, do i put it in run or in command prompt?
Download pages-articles.xml.bz2 from "url" and extract the xml file using a compressor tool like 7zip.
Wikiconvert tool
uncompress this file in the same folder as the xml and type:
wikiconvert "your downloaded and extracted xml file" -owiki_prefix_like_enwiki -n
In some minutes you get some wiki_prefix_like_enwiki*.* files. Copy to the sdcard of your phone and run the wikipedia reader.
There is no problem having several wikipedias in your sdcard.
Edit: I got it to work! i downloaded a different wikiconvert zip which didn't contain the .exe file no wonder i cant execute to generate the lwks, all is good now

you get the wiki.tag file automatically after conversion using wikiconvert. Its better to run the batch file provided in the zip(only after editing the batch file so that the file names of the wikidump is consistent). I think u will get the wiki.tag file only if you use -n as given in the example:
wikiconvert "your downloaded and extracted xml file" -owiki_prefix_like_enwiki -n
Just tested this on the recent wikipedia dump. The wikiconvert executable crashes at 96.57% every time.
if you are using external sd card for storing the wikipedia then follow it here:
some Chinese Android phones have small internal storage, below than 2 gb mostly, if you want to store apps in External sd cards like this one. with English Wikipedia almost greater than 9GB you must store those files on external device & due to the android limitaion you can't install apps to external drives. you must install it to the internal phone memory or internal phone storage. to save it in external drive plz follow the steps.
1. install GL to SD app from the play store.
2. open it & click options then select move data to sd & select an app you want to move to sd.
3. now back, move the folder in which the converted wikipedia files are & copy it to your external sd card folder data/ & that apps folder which you have moved to sd via GL to SD app.
4 now open GL to SD click mount. & open the leo's wikipedia reader.
Make sure you have rooted phone & the wiki.tag file is copied to the root of external drive.
i have successfully done it with my Qmobile Noir A6 {Rooted}. {MediaTek Chipset} {Running Android 4.0 ICS}
i love fastwiki but that app mostly crashes all the time when you are searching articles. fast wiki has night mode & more options too. both are good try it & make a choice of your own. By the way its my 1st post in XDA forum. sorry for my bad English.
