Some iPhone questions? - General Questions and Answers

I know this is not an Apple/iPhone forum but I've seen a number of users on here that have or had an iPhone so I thought I would just ask some general questions.
Right now I'm borrowing a friends 2G iPhone to try out, still trying to get my SIM working in it without adding data temporarily, but that's a whole different story. Anyways, I also want to get an HTC Fuze and just switch back and forth between the two phones depending on which one I want to carry that day.
I am aware they both have their positives and negatives, I do not want to turn this thread into a WinMo Vs. iPhone thread.
My main confusion lies in the data plan. I would like to have data with both phones. Can I add the iPhone plan to my account and then switch the SIM back and forth and use the iPhone plan for data on the Fuze? or would I have to purchase the PDA plan from ATT for the Fuze, add the iPhone data plan when I activate it and then call and cancel the iPhone data the next day and just use the PDA plan for both phones? or would I have to purchase two separate data plans? In which case, it's going to be a very tough decision on which phone I get.

Not sure how it works in the states but here in the UK a data plan is attached to a sim so, swapping a sim from one phone to another shouldn't make any diference.
For example, I have a TD and an Omnia and I can switch between the two fine without any issues or cost.
To be honest, your best bet would be an Iphone forum as the winmob device won't care but, i'm not sure how the Ipony works ... does it use "apple" specific transport/protocol/ports etc?

Do you plan to purchase the two devices with a 1/2-year plan for each?

I plan on buying the 2G iPhone from my friend, so no contract obviously. The Fuze I plan on buying with a two year contract.
Any other iPhone users out there with some ideas?

Then, you'll be able to just swap the card among the two phones. I'm continuously doing the same between my iPhone 3G and other PDA's and phones.

So you just have the required iPhone data plan on your bill and it works with the iPhone as well as your other WinMo phones? So the easiest thing for me to do right now would be to put my SIM in the iPhone, activate it through iTunes, add the data plan. Eventually make my way to an ATT store to get the Fuze and just tell them I want a two year contract and no data, They'll put my SIM into the Fuze and then when I want to just go back to the iPhone swap my SIM into it?
Or should I go get the Fuze, tell them I don't want a data plan, they'll swap my SIM out of my current non-smartphone into it, then I put the SIM into the iPhone and activate it and the iPhone data plan?

Well, if you are on ATT, then as soon as you start using the iPhone with your sim, ATT will automatically change your entire plan (Calls + Data) to the iPhone plan, or atlest this was what was happening till a few months ago.

I had the 2g iphone for 13 days and I was able to use the 3g sim card and the data plan (not 3g though) on my stock att 8125. I think the main difference between plans is unlimited SMS.
I do not believe you can use an old sim to activate to an iphone, I might be wrong or outdated on this but my old sims and even my new one do not work with the iphone. I was told some time ago that only new 3g sim cards and the iphoen imei can activate for an iphone plan.
Am I outdated?

Well I'm on a family plan with my parents so I would hope it doesn't change the voice plan, only the data?
And what order should I activate the phones, should I do the iPhone through iTunes and then go get the Fuze or should I go sign the two year contract with the Fuze and then add the iPhone through iTunes?
If I sign a two year contract with the Fuze and then activate the iPhone through iTunes will they charge me the $175 ETF? I don't think they would since I believe the contract is for the line of service, not the device but I want to make sure?

Anyone got an idea on which way I should do it?

Your scenario is so specific that it is beyond my iphone experience. I think you should move over to the forums at wireless.att.com and ask over there. DARE I SAY...They are a good resource and has good depth of knowledge about sims/plans/iphone.
Maybe you can convince the 'Rents to allow you your own plan. Go to LetsTalk and get a free Fuze from Att. )

I cant wait for the iphone to come out on another provider...with a better data plan...

smartphone noob here

I'm thinking of buying the Fuze without a data plan, and then buying a 2G iPhone from a friend and then activating it through iTunes and adding the iPhone data plan. Then just swap back and forth between the phones when I want to. However until I get the iPhone and its data plan, is there a way I can disconnect the data from the Fuze entirely so my bill isn't like $1000?
yes it's easy to remove and or block gprs
How do I do it? Sorry for the nubness but its my first smartphone. Not too familiar with it yet.

AT&T requires a data plan on Fuze

Hey guys, I need to cancel my data plan on my account with AT&T, and the rep told me b/c it's a smart phone it requires a data plan with it.
I installed that one program that disables network connections so no data is transferred at all, but I'd still be paying the $30/month.
Does anyone know of a program to blind the IDMI or w/e number so that AT&T doesn't know what phone I'm using? I mean, yea I can just put my SIM in another phone and use that and cancel the plan just fine. I'd LIKE to continue using the fuze as a normal phone b/c it has wifi and is an all-around better phone than say a moto razor. This way I can call from a razor, cancel the plan, and put the SIM back in the Fuze and according to my account online it won't know I've switched back to the Fuze.
Ideas? Thanks.
tell the rep that he/she is a liar and a jerk. You can remove your dataplan. the only phone out there that requires you to have a dataplan is the iphone. get yourself a rep that actually knows what they're talking about.
Last time they told my gf that her only option for txt mssging is to pay for the unlimited and i kept telling her you can get 200 for $5 and the rep says no, I told her to get another rep and that rep set it up for her.
You actually do need a data plan for any smartphone, if you upgrade to another smart phone theres no way to get out of paying $30 for data

I have to agree with mputtr. Keep trying until you get a rep that will do it for you. By the way, I've upgraded twice over the past 3 1/2 years with ATT smartphones, and I was never required to get a data plan. I still don't have one to this day.

Not true anymore, since September 6, it's now AT&T policy that every smartphone requires the $30 data plan, not just the iphone (BBs included). The only way to get out of this is if you had a smartphone BEFORE that date and either didn't have a data plan or had a cheaper one and therefore you're grandfathered in. You could try to find a rep to do it for you, and even in the rare case you do find one, once AT&T matches your IMEI, they're gonna put the data plan back on and possibly charge you for trying to circumvent the policy.

He's right. Though, how long do you think it will take for them to match up the IMEI's? Because I've switched my SIM through several Winmo phones (shh, off the record) and never been asked about it.
I'm hoping AT&T will be lazy because I really don't like this idea

Yeah, it's either hit or miss I guess. At times my Fuze will go unnoticed after using a dumbphone, and then all of a sudden it will show up in OLAM, but I've had the Medianet plan on the Fuze forever, so no worries
But from what I hear AT&T is more aggressive in searching for people, so all I can say is good luck!
I've got three phones on family data & family texting... $60 total for all three. Fuze, BJII and Samsung Eternity. I want to upgrade fuze to Tilt2 & BJII to better smartphone, but I don't want to get jacked by AT&T forcing a move to data plans. Anyone know if you can switch back thought the website once you've signed up for data plan?
I've had a Tilt forever. I need to uprade, hopefully to a HTC Pure, however already having a family plan with 5 phones, I don't need or want a data plan o top of that expense. Is there a way of using an unlocked phone to avoid the ATT Nazis? Thanks for any help. Hoping that I won't have to go back to an iPaq Pocket PC.
the only real way of doing it is after upgrading the phone wait a month or so while paying for data then put the sim in a old razr or something and go online change your IMEI and then call and say u lost the new one and have them take data off.
then just swap sims later and hope they dont notice
Here's a quick fix that always works: (I've done this many, many times)
1. Get yourself a dumbphone, i.e. non-winmo/BB/iPhone devices like those Nokia's or SE's
2. Get the IMEI# of the dumbphone ready because the rep would want to register that with your account.
3. Call the rep from the dumbphone, and tell him/her that you're NOT gonna use your smartphone anymore and that you would want the data plan to be removed.
OR
This would also be the chance for you to downgrade your data plan to the cheaper $15/mo MediaNET, most dumbphones will be eligible for that.
4. Hang up and put back the SIM card into the smartphone again, voila.
The trick is to NEVER call the rep from the smartphone as they're able to detect your IMEI from the network.
Good luck.

at&t smartphone without data plan?

I am aware that At&T is now applying data plans to every smart phone activated this year. I wanted to get my hands on the Tilt 2 and I found a couple of web sites selling the product for a steal. The problem is I never use data and don't often use the wi fi but I loved my tilt and it is on its last days. I want to stick to something as close as possible.
anyone know any loop holes to get a smartphone without the data plan?

they are starting to force you onto a plan if they detect a "smartphone" on the network they will add it regardless. sry .
If you had your tilt on the line without a data plan last september, you may be OK. For people using smartphones without smarphone plans when they implemented the new policy (last september) they applied a feature to the accounts called "smartphone exclusion", effectively grandfathering them into not requiring data plans. If you have this feature, you can switch your SIM card into smartphones without a data plan automatically being added. However, if you buy a smartphone from AT&T, you'll lose your smartphone exclusion. So it's best to buy off of craigslist/ebay/google only.

yes i dont currently have it. that is what I was told when I bought my tilt but obviously they told me a different date at that time. I also have heard that att can track what phone you are using based on the imei of the phone ...so it doesnt sound good for those who dont need data plans but want smartphones
found a real good price on the tilt 2 from amazon

Touch Pro 2 on AT&T

Well I decided to leave my cyanogenmoded (5.08) G1 and try out the backflip.
Im miserable.
This thing is stuck in 1.5 (i dont think i can endure that for too long and q3 looks like too long lol)
Not to mention its LOADED with att crap apps..
AND
Now ive lost my $10 a month unlimited family data... with the G1 att didnt seem to care that I had that- now this Backflip is announcing- identifying itself as a smart phone to the ATT network... so it automatically changes my plan to the $25 a month within 24 hours...
200mb for 15 is not enough data... i will surely go over and frankly i think i could go over 2gb (lots of email and browsing... youtube etc)
SO
Will the Touch Pro 2 announce it self to the att network as a smart phone? Will any unlocked tmobile phone do that? I was told that the G2 Hero will not via another post but I am liking the look of the touch pro 2 a bit more- especially if I can port android to it...
Yes any TMobile unlocked phone will work with ATT just not ATT 3G. You will be limited to Edge. Same as taking an ATT phone and using it with Tmo. You will only see an Edge connection. 3G on ATT and Tmo are on completely different bands. Other then that the phone will work as normal. I'm surprised you were allowed to keep your unlimited data plan. ATT killed those off last week. New deals are $15 for 200mg or $25 for 2GB. You may want to call ATT and just make sure you still unlimited because if you just renewed they might has pulled a switch on you.

Well ATT did not let me keep the family data unlimited plan once I switched to the backflip...
I TRIED to do this quietly- I just threw my sim in the backflip and didnt say anything- but it sent me a text message a few hours later stating that it automatically signed me up for the 25/month data plan.
With the G1 it seems they (Att) did not know I was using a PDA - the G1 Did not report to the network that it was a PDA as the Backflip ( and I would assume any ATT PDA ) does.
What I am asking is- will the Touch Pro 2 (or any other NON-AT&T phone) act the same as the G1- could I tell AT&T that I am going to use my "Dumb phone" because I don't like the backflip (or what ever reason) - have them switch the Family data plan on for my line- and then put my sim card into a Touch Pro 2 and not have them know (as I did for the G1).
It would be nice if there was a list of phones that this is possible for... it would also be helpful if we knew HOW AT&T KNOWS that we are using a PDA - is it based on the IMEI number? Is there an android process or service or something in the background that announces it? Could we shut it down or change the ID number in such a way that AT&T's system would see a "Dumbphone" instead of a "Smartphone"/"PDA"
Just some thoughts...
Also- I understand that tmobile and att use different 3g bands and thus I would not get 3g- i don't care, frankly 3g is not that much faster than 2g (edge) any way.
No an HTC 8525 was the last phone I used where ATT or Tmo didn't pick up it was a smartphone and gave me the 9.99 unlimited plan. The HTC 8925 and up (TP2, TILT2, and HD2) all said "This phone is not compatible with this network, please call support to upgrade your plan." If I were you I would call support and blast the hell out of their ear. You should get the smartphone unlimited plan for $25, especially if you had a previous unlimited plan. All those are supposed to be grandfathered in. Tell then you never would have gotten the phone if you new you wouldn't be able to get unlimted data anymore. Its a new enough rule change they should be able to bump you up a couple support tiers and hook you up with the old unlimited plan. I know when they stopped doing the prepay plans they were calling accounts in for 2 weeks after the deadline until corperate said ok guys no more prepay its over. Then that actually quit selling it. So you should be able to get them to give you the proper unlimited plan. BTW what condition is your TP2? If its in mint I have a TILT2 I would be willing to swap. Then you would get ATT 3g. If you didn't know the TP2, TILT2, and Rhodium are all the same phone but different carriers.
Haha well the reason i was asking about this was because I wanted to see if I could use the TP2 on ATT with the 10 dollar family data unlimited plan... since apparently i can not I am not going to buy one lol :/.
At this point i need to find a phone that works on att, runs android, and allows me to use the 10 dollar unlimited plan without att recognizing the phone as a smart phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (other than the G1) Preferably something with a qwerty.
THANKS!
Not sure that phone exists yet, but who knows. I defenately know your not gonna be able to use your 9.99 data plan with any phones made in the past 3 years. They recognize the ime number and know its a smartphone now. ATT even puts what type of phone you used that month on your bill. I used his ATT sim card to unlock my phone, and he brought in his bill saying he used an iphone 21 days of the month and a Touch pro 2 for 1 week. I don't know why it said a week because it was more like 1 minute. But he said anytime he puts his ATT sim card in another phone it shows up on his bill as a new phone for a week.
Thanks- yeh its looking like G1 FTW!

Yes, the TILT2 has a chrome bezel around hte sides where the TP2 has black alum. The KB is different too. The TP2 has an actual QWERTY keyboard with numbers on top. The TILT2 merged the nubmers into the UIJKNM keys so you have to hit a function button then the number. Also the TILT2 is just a touch more modern feeling and looking. Even the slider feels like a higher quality. As for the internal chips I beleive they are the same except for the radio chip for different 3G networks.

The radio chip was what I was interested in. If the HTC TP2 rom will load on either device, will that allow the phone to run on either 3G network? I'm a Fuze owner so I don't have the first clue. I just would like to know.
The rom will flash on either device, but the 3G will not work on both ATT or Tmo. You will have to pick one or the other. Tmo runs on 1700mhz and 2100mhz, ATT runs on 850mhz? and 2100mhz. If you use a tmo phone on ATT you will just get edge, and vice versa.
Don't quote me on this, but it all has to do with what IEMI's ATT has is its data base, thats how the phone tells the network what kind and make the phone is.
The Nexus one for att 3g doesn't show up as a smart phone.....yet
TP2 T7373 (SEA edition) runs on Edge with ATT. $15 for unlimited. I once put my sim into a Blackberry and they switched my plan to $25/m. I took my sim out, put it back in my TP2 and then called them. They asked me the IMEI # and switched me back to the $15/m unlimited (MediaNet). Hope this answers your question.
HTC TP2: Cm7 vs WinMo
I do not know whether to turn to you below: : Confused:

I want the phone to 7.2.0-RC1-Hero Caynogenmod was changed back to WinMo, but only forum I read that the WinMo on how to make android (or next)!
Very slow and unstable for mal (as iron is not present).
Please help me, especially in how the program could be "android HTC TP2 is connected to the PC to WinMo to make him know what to do, and then step by step.
Important! : Sírás: (not just the android to WinMo on the card next to it alone!)
(I want to stay next to the robot, but if more than 2 of the stability and the "speed" of the WinMo is OK!)
A big thank you in advance for your help! : Good:

[Q] captivate and AT&T's basic phone unlimited data plan

Hey guys, my 1st post here.
i am on AT&T and i am going for galaxy s device, obvious choice being captivate, but i want to know if i have basic unlimited data plan (the one for my current SE w760, $15/month) will continue to work? i am going to buy captivate from ebay, not directly from AT&T, so can i still use non-smartphone data plan for captivate? cuz if im not getting unlimited data, i will prefer going to Vibrant.
It will work fine, but AT&T will eventually notice and switch you to an "appropriate" plan.
thank you for the reply, but then what if i go for Vibrant instead of captivate? that way AT&T cant change my plan to smartphone plan right?
It depends on whether they have the Vibrant's IMEIs in their database. It's possible they don't, but it's possible they do.
But then you would have to get an unlocked Vibrant, and would you even be able to use the 200MB on the smartphone $15 plan since you'd be using EDGE (I'm assuming the Vibrant doesn't have AT&T 3G).
I'm good friends with a manager from an AT&T store, and yes, it will change, unfortunately, even if you got the Vibrant... Had to ask him pretty much the same question for a friend of mine, and they manage to see that you have a data/smart phone pretty quick.
yeah that is true, clocking 200MB on EDGE is not that probable, but that is my deciding factor. if i can get unlimited 3G on captivate (i guess AT&T no longer has an unlimited plan) then i would go for captivate else i would go for Vibrant, as vibrant is better in many aspects than captivate, especially less bloatware and more useful apps pre-loaded.
And you can get an unlocked Vibrant?
thats a shame, but then in that case Vibrant is better choice, as having a limited 3G is a pain, and that was the only reason i was going for captivate over vibrant.
and yes there are lots of unlocked vibrants on ebay from pretty reputed sellers.

In my case they didn't. I used my at&t Tilt (Kaiser) on MEdia Net Unlimited for the last two years. I never got switched back to the smartphone data plan or got any sort of nasty note about using too much data.
I had a unlocked G1 on At&t and after configuring the APNs I had unlimited data for $15 a month. Needless to say there was no 3g but it still worked with no issues.
If you have an old unlimited data plan, its called grandfathered I think. Anyways, if you have an old smartphone plan it should just stay the same as long its the smartphone, I still had my unlimited plan when I switch from iPhone 3GS to SGS. But I don't know if you have the smartphone unlimited data plan since you mention the 15 dollars one. I would go directly to AT&T cooperate store and speak in person cuz representative on the phone are just dumb! LOL so yeah meeting in person would be good.

200 MB on EDGE is easy to do on the Captivate. I'm already past that point and I do use Wifi at home.
so from all the posts, i think getting a captivate means i have to pay for smartphone plan, even though i should have an option to cancel the data plans totally (while some forums say that i cant cancel a data plan, but i dont believe thats the case if i have bought the phone at full price and not subsidized).
Now i am interested in seeing what will AT&T do if i go for Vibrant (instead of Captivate) and use the non-smartphone data plan on it. I doubt they will know what is connected as they wont have IMEI for Vibrant (some forums said that AT&T does differentiate their smartphones based on the list of IMEIs) so with Vibrant i should be able to use non-smartphone data-plan, what do you guys think about that?

AT&T requires ALL smartphones to have data plan regardless how you purchased it. Just ask any Nexus One owners.

Personally, if I'm only getting EDGE speed, I'll not pay any data plan for it. It's like you buy a top of line PC today and put a dialup networking for internet connection.
