USB plug: ok to use normal mini USB? - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I just discovered -- accidentally -- that a standard mini USB plug not only fits in the Touch Pro's proprietary plug, but also charges and syncs normally!
To clarify (I hope):
* the Touch Pro's USB plug is shaped like this: l==/
* while a normal mini USB plug looks like this: \==/
Does this make sense?
Like most people, I have lots of normal USB cables lying around, and only one HTC type thing... Can anyone tell if it's totally ok to use a standard mini USB cable instead of HTC's "special" one? It can't damage anything electronically?

Yes,that's normal thing it works. Different shape is present, because the same connector supplies also A/V signals. These pins are located opposite normal USB wires on the middle pin-plate(5 pins standard USB,6 pins Audio/Video). That's the difference and reason, why normal cable works with HTC devices.

Also I think the reason it's shaped like that is to stop you plugging the HTC one into other devices. Could be wrong though

Thanks very much for this speedy answer!!
Cool, now I can use my collection of standard USB cables so I don't have to carry that one HTC cable around everywhere.

That makes sense. So HTC cable in normal USB plug: no, normal USB cable in HTC plug: yes.

Yes,the reason is that, you cannot use accessories(handset, adapters) on standart type models. Also all standart chargers are working, because charging pins are located on USB side.

Fuze Charging issues
Just to let eveyone know I originally tried to charge my Fuze using my old Tilt charger and the Fuze got hot and while it charged it took forever. I then switched to the charger supplied with the fuze and there was no heat and the devise charged very quickly. I don't know why but I thought eveyone should know

the raphael charger is 1A, while most chargers are 300-500mA, hence the slower charging. The heat shouldn't be though... so check if you get a nice and clean voltage

n00b Charging Question

I want to get a second cable to charge my touch pro while I am at work, can I got and buy any 5-pin mini USB cable or do I have to order a HTC cable?
Standard cable will be fine
I've just looked at the USB cable Expansys sell (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=166227) but looking at the picture the plug is a differant shape to the socket on my Touch pro. I can't find anywhere that sells a cable that looks like the socket (rectangular with bottom right corner chamfered, I assume everyone is the same). Can anyone point me in the right direction?
You already have answer from ardsar
For charging standard mini-USB cable is ok.
Yes, and what I said was that a standard mini usb has a differant plug. How can I use it if it has a differant plug?
yes it does, but so did the HTC3300, but the charger and data cable use the 'standard' mini usb connector.
I have one (car charger and 'standard' usb cable) and they both fit fine, work fine and charge fine. so no need to worry.
Basically, a normal mini-usb plug will fit in HTCs proprietary socket

PC doesn't recognize my Diamond on the cable I've bought

I've bought mini USB cable with charging option and charging works great but my PC doesn't recognize my HTC Diamond connected with that cable to USB. It works with the original one but with that I've bought synchronizing data on any USB ports just doesn't work.It seems that PC needs special driver for that cable.
Could anyone Help?
all (mini)usb cables should charge your phoen when you connect it to the PC anyway so i don't understand how this cable is different, could you please provide a link to it or something?
I got a mini USB cable used with my mp3 player and it just synchronizes data with my Diamond but it doesn't charge so not every mini USB cable sync data and charge...
I've bought my cable on polish auction site byt that one mini USB cable is exactly the same.
The problem is you have bought a "charging" cable, I'm guessing if you chopped it in half (please don't) there would only be two wires, a positive and negative.
These cables are designed to provide power only, otherwise the cable would be a lot thicker.
You would want something like this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/95790
But don't quote me on that or you might get the same problem, ring up before you buy.
The cable you have with your MP3 player wouldn't be designed to charge if your MP3 player isn't designed to charge, manufactureres will save money even if it's on a few strands of extra cable.
There are 3 types of cables I've come accross:
1) ExtUSB -> Used by HTC only. Main difference is that this cable can transport audio as well. You only need to use this cable if youre listening to songs. (Your earphone connector is a true extUSB one) - the rest is the same as miniUSB
2) Normal miniUSB -> You can use this cable for charging and synching. As simple as that. Same cable used by non-HTC devices
3) Abnormal miniUSB -> Heh.. I don't know what to call this, but im sure you've seen some really thin retractable cables. They seem to work with certain devices only. I have 1 and it used to work on my Cruise/Artemis/Atom, but NOT on my diamond. Nevertheless, I can charge the device ONLY. -> I believe you've encountered this kinda cable
Check out the following posts: I've got a solution if youre really onto retractable cables that will sync+charge your diamond:

http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=101534&view=findpost&p=744813
Cheers.
I'm sure I have encountered 3rd case. My retractable cable description says that it is for synchronizing data and charging but as you said maybe it works fully only with certain devices.
I think I will look for USB hub with retractable cable and that I've bought I will use for charging only...
Thanks

Micro USB works on Touch Pro...!!!

Hi guys...!!!
I got a bit excited seeing my normal micro usb cable works with the touch pro. I just plugged it in for fun but it actually detected the cable and even my pc recognised the touch pro...
Did you guys know about it???
Just thought of sharing this piece of info with you all...

yes... lol
thanks anyway!
Worked with all of the HTC devices I've used so far (Universal, Kaiser, Artemis, and Raphael) - still good to mention, though.
ROFL!!
And BTW: It's MiniUSB, not MicroUSB.
this must be a joke..seriously lol
the htc usb plug (the 3 way audio/charger/tvout) isc alled a "non standard mini usb" and your normal mini usb is a "standard" the only function the non standard plug utilizes is all the audio/headset controls (the bottom 5 pins) while he top 4 (associated with the standard mini usb functions) control the + and - voltages and data transfer. so one would naturally assume and realize that ANY mini usb would work And the fact that the wall charger that comes with any htc device utlizes the standard mini usb design so its a no brainer..
Sorry, dint know that you all knew about it... Lol...
is this your first htc device?
It's the simple things we take for granted...
Yeah this is my 1st HTC device... I am still learning and just reading and getting to know this beast slowly... Lol...
HTC has a different name for it, they call it: HTC ExtUSBâ„¢!
Besides the PRO, the other PDA that I had was the Qtek S200 and it had a "normal" miniUSB connection.
n00b.
hey, guess what...I can press buttons on the screen with my finger!
(sorry dude, don't mean to offend you or anything really......its just that such posts are hard to come by and its beyond my ability to control the evil side in me)
Akash,
I can understand your surprise. I remember just a few HTC devices ago, (maybe the SX66), you had to know the pinout for the cable for the exact device. To make matters worse, many different cables with the same looking connector, had opposing pinouts. So you could actually fry your device plugging in a lookalike cable.
So remember, don't be afraid to jump in on any topic here.
I'm trying to get mini-USB cables from monoprice... how many pins does the mini-B connector have?
monoprice has 4 pin, 5 pin, 8 pin, 14 pin usb->mini b cables.

HTC Desire microUSB Cable fragile...

In one week I have succeed to break my microUSB cable that came with the Desire, the USB-Brick is probably due to manipulation with those type of weak cables for sure it can't help. I'll get a new one (or two). I guess my pile of 20 miniUSB is useless now...
The Odd is that it can charge upside down
yeah very rare, ive never managed to break my cable and my cable has been through a lot including using it as a belt along with holding a pair of ladders down on the top of my car

Are you serious?
This isn't exactly Sonim.
Still, how exactly is the OP's cable damaged?
P.S. I'm also pissed that my collection over way over 100 miniUSB cables seem to be all too slowly becoming redundant. Before my HTC Desire, everything was Mini, not I'm forced to carry both types around. I'm considering making some neat little converters for my other devices.
Can confirm.
The cable that came with my Desire (more wire than cable) is crap.
It broke within the first week.
Nearly no strain at all, cable break at the USB plug.
you can use a mini to micro USB convertor instead of carrying both wires around

Yes i am serious, i have been using the original HTC cable that came with the phone and an additional two official HTC cable for desire just fine. I dont have any problems with them and yes i have used them as belts and cable ties.
The only way i can see you ever damaging one of these is if you damage the end or the cable you have might have been faulty from the start or near broke.
I just tried to bend the end of mine a few times and it still seems to be working, i did a few file transfer tests and it doesnt work any slower or faster.
out of all the desires or htc phones sold with a usb mini cable your the only person to report this?
The same thing happened to shadow and my cable broke during the first month as well.

mine does too
lol
you can fix a usb brick easily and ppl if ur plugging the phone in to the front of ur computer try a different port preferably at the back
I already broke several cables. Now one on of the pins of the Desire's micro-usb connector broke.. I for sure am a bit hard on my equipment but this never happened with micro-usb. I also think it easily breaks because the cable does not fully connect with the Desire's micro-usb connector. It sticks halfway in.
Anyway, I can no longer connect via usb and with all the dents and scratches it will probably be very hard to get repaired under warranty.
Mine works fine, but my mother's stopped working without visible damage.
Mine failed too, Its fussy about charging and very rarely works for USB. I think its the microusb<->cable connection that fails because its not moulded like most cables.
I've got a cable from a blackberry now (it was lying around, ive never had a BB) which works fine for charging and USB, the moulded connector seems better and the cable is much thicker.
I'd rather the cable or connector broke than the port on the phone (which is what microusb is designed for)
I was wondering if they can be fixed?!
YOU"RE RIGHT, they're flimsy.
These
Code:

Look sturdy but break too easily. Not as cheap as most chinese made but these cables usually break in about 2 months for me. Dont even think about folding it and putting it in a bag for those frail, dying HTC phones.
I wonder if the cables are easy to fix... its copper right?
-Can anyone recommend a simple way to handle these wires or a more durable wire? I dont want to buy one every month. I'm thinking about http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Retract..._19?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1328931599&sr=1-19.

I am thinking about it. It costs about the same to just buy the micro cable. This has 30 days. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-5-Pin-...262914?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f13828e82
my usb cable rubber is also starting to split at the ends. but it still works fine.
Never broke it but...
I never actually broke the cable, but I always found it very loose. When I insert the microUSB into my phone it doesn't click or anything. It just sorta lays there. It is not very stable and I am always terrified when messing around with something that requires a stable connection (alpharev, root, etc.)
Am I the only one experiencing this, or did I just get a lame cable?
USB conector
I've never had trouble with my htc cable, but I've replaced the usb port twice on one phone and once on the other. (yes I have two desire's)
I too wish it was a deeper port.

[Q] micro usb cable help (pinout++)

I bought some really cheap retractable cables of ebay. When I got them they didn't work at all. I opened and rewired the micro-usb connector - the cables were connected all wrong, but after a little soldering I think they're correct.
Now the cables are working fine with my Nokia N82, but when I connect them to my Desire and Desire HD my computer won't recognize it as USB devices, only charging.
I've looked at the pinout here http://www.kineteka.com/microusb-b.aspx - should pin 4 be connected to GND to use it with HTC?
Any tips?
I was curious of the pinout, thanks for the link.
As far as wether the pin should be grounded, well... if it's not working ATM ground it and see if it works? Since you're successfully charging the phone you know you connected the +5 correctly, grounding any other pins won't cause damage...
Cheers
P.S. Also sometimes good to check the obvious, did you enable the Mass-Storage option in Android?
I've had similar issues with USB 1.1 ports.
Are you connecting it to a USB 2 port??
