Developing Debate

Okay, so I'm starting to develop apps for my XDA2 and having come from a standard PC development background I was always told that software should uphold the basic principles of software quality IE reliability, reusability, maintenance and so on
I thought it would be an idea to here from people that develop for the mobile platform weather they feel it is possible to develop apps with these software engineering fundamentals.
Do we have to abandon object orientated programming, and go back to the procedures in order to develop?
Sorry if this is a, a silly debate, or b, been talked about before
lets have ya
first of all this post would prob belong more in hacking it being that thats where most the devoleping stuff is being adressed
other then that some people use gcc some people use win stk
where you have to make oo from the buttom if you want being that both are c++ it's by far impossible
and some program mfc and .net where oo is very much a part of the way things are don of cause using these tech's you can still program without following the guidelines of oo
i think the name of this forum confuse many people
even though it's xda developers few people here develop software for these devices
most people talk about spc xda stuff and how to upgrade and general pda stuff
hacking it is where most the software stuff is at
Hello Rudegar
Thanks you for the tip, Have no doubt that I shall be taking that on board and be re-posting my message in the hacking it forum (Hope that I am not breaking any rules by doing this, we don't want to do that! ).
nop it's not a forum rule or anything it's just that your post will get pushed out of the view before many people will read or answer it in this part of the forum
the development environment for pocketpc provides you with all the same tools as you would use under 'normal / win32' circumstances.
if you are used to using your own oo wrappers for most microsoft api's you can probably port them without much effort to the ppc platform.
the boost libraries work fine with embedded vc++.
don't know about stuff like qt.

XDA Forum loading speed

Is it just me (and my boring cable internet connection) or is this forum actually getting slower and slower?
Sometimes I click on a board and wait up to 30 seconds that it actually opens.
I am sure there is not much that can be done other than trying to delete old threads to reduce the size of the forum or - something even more impossible - switch the forum software / server / database type ...
But I do hope it is my ISP, so, I will be patient each time I try to enter a board.
Still,
a tiny idea which might help decreasing the future ammount of posts: Since XDA Developers is more a place for development and cooking, general support requests which have nothing to do with any of the cooked ROMs and developed software should just be removed - it is in fact increasing that this forum gets abused for free support rather than discussing ROMs and development.
I have added a poll to see what other members think.
To be more spezific:
With "general support" I mean support requests which have nothing to do with cooked ROMs or in this forums provided software, hacks and apps! People should contact their manufacturer or service provider rather than posting here - that is what warranty is for!

Are there really no firewalls with application-based rules for WM yet??

Hi everybody, I got my 1st WM device 2 weeks ago, and wherever I went, I found links to this forum. Since then I found so many great applications here (and I haven't even done a systematic search), so thanks a lot for this cool place!
One thing is missing badly for me though: On my old Symbian 3rd I was asked every time an application wanted to access the internet (and also write/read data). I could block it, allow it once or permanently. So almost exactly the same I have on my desktop with Sunbelt.
Now on WM, it seems to be totally common that every application can access the net as it likes to, without any kind of user confirmation. And I really don't feel comfortable about it. Who knows an application doesn't scan my phonebook or other personal data and upload it somewhere without me even knowing about it?!
So I did lots of searches, and the "best" I found was "Airscanner Mobile Firewall". Unfortunately though, it lacks application-based rules. You can only block E-Mails completely, or ICMP, or... But it doesn't protect you from installed software going online is it pleases.
Apart from that, there seem to be no tools for this at all. There are call blockers or tools that cut off internet completely, but no tools to control web access based on application. To be honest, I'm totally surprised by this, since there is thousands of apps for WM for anything else. It doesn't even seem to be a topic that concerns lots of WM users, while the creators of Symbian obviously took it quite serious.
I know I could have posted this in the "ideas for apps" thread, but first I wanted to check I didn't miss any existing software.
Thanks for any hints!

Tak for the reply, but as I said...

Well, if this seems to be of no interest to anybody, I guess it means there never have been any cases of spyware on WM yet ever?
Is it not technically possible for an application to read the entire memory of a WM device and send it anywhere without the user taking notice? Let alone install a keylogger, reset the device and other evil stuff?
not that I know off and the virus are also a handful which are more likely proof of concept then real malware

last minute meeting application

I've attempted to search with no results if an application like in the title exists. So, please forgive me if this has been posted before.
Ever had a bunch of people that weren't sure if they wanted to execute a meeting/plan/function unless someone else was in on it? Sometimes I've had a vital person not want to contribute unless a majority of the people were on-board due to time constraints.
I'm looking for an application that updates accordingly when several people invited submit their status/decision. The application auto-updates at least within a minute of a change to the invitation time, date or attendees. That way there's not one person calling 10 people and figuring out who is on-board and who is not and then calling everyone back to relay the changes in attendees.
Is there an application that exists like this or similar in function? Thanks. Happy holidays!

Why is Whatsapp "afraid" of dual sim?

It is widely known that Whatsapp does not support dual sims in one phone. There are numerous workarounds for this (some more shady then others), but that is not what I started this thread for.
I am asking myself why Whatsapp does not support it. I mean: the amount off questions and information that is spread around the internet clearly indicates a wish for this feature from the users, and to be really honest: it can't be that difficult to integrate it in the app (just allow for a second phonenumber to be authenticated, that's basically it...).
I have searched for the underlying reason why Whatsapp does not want this, but I can't find anything on this. Does anybody know why this is?
