Migrating from Kaiser to Raphael - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I searched but didn't find anything on this...
With the pending launch of the Fuze on ATT, I am really considering making the switch.
Of course, I depend on a full slate of third party apps including PI8, Core Player, Pocket Breeze and Pocket Weather. Yes, I understand that I'll have to turn of Touch Flo to run plug-in apps like these and phoneAlarm. I wonder what impact the VGA has.
Are there apps you used on your Kaiser, that you can't use on your Touch Pro because of the screen resolution?

Not many. I'd say the only apps you can't run are Skyfire and very pelicular business related apps. Like a CAD app I saw somewhere for PPC.

Really? From the skyfire forums, I've gathered that it only runs on a quarter of the screen for vga devices.

For me there wasn't!
I even us an extremely old IP calculator which was written for windows mobile 2003 and it works like a charm. Which is good because I couldn't find any other IP calculator ;-)

IMO you will be very unlucky nower days to suffer from apps that are not displaying right on the new screen size...
I remember of the days of the ipaq 4700's.... now that was painful as it was one of the first devices (bar Toshiba) that used a res different than 320x240.

htc s710 being delivered - excited - recommendations for software ?

Hi,
this is my first WM6 phone. I guess some of the software I would have normally loaded on a WM5 or 2003 phone might now be redundant.
Would appreciate if folk would relay their experiences on:
1. Useful Utility software
2. Games that work well
3. How is MS Live - is there any point in IM+ ?
much appreciated
rgds
Just received mine !! you won't be disappointed. I'll let you know if I find software that works well.
I have just installed Facade and Papyrus from sbsh.net, relly nice apps that make the homepage and calendar much better. Papyrus does not work in landscape mode yet though, maybe an update will come out soon.
For surfing i use Opera mini, much nicer than internet explorer.

Hi,
yes it runs on Java, so you first have to start java, then opera. Maybe it's possible to start java with opera directly somehow.
rgrds Björn
Mine is being delivered today as well . I plan to try the new version of IM+ in which they FINALLY added an autoconnect feature that will reconnect the client after a phone call. Before I had to manually reconnect the program. If it works I'll definitely post a follow up.
Though I wish there was a sms thread app like the palm version for the treo.
hi
indeed theres a app similar to the palm messaging.
there is also txtman, wich looks better but crashes every time a sms is recieved...
Qthreader works well, so enjoy...
forget to mention, despite working well there is some flaws... :S
some characters are displayng incorrectly in sent and recieved sms's (me think's that it must have something to do with unicode suport).
but try it... nothing to lose (except hope for threaded sms app)
Just tested IM+ on a trial basis and had some trouble with it. Although it runs in landscape and portrait mode, it can't switch between the modes once its started already. If you start in portrait mode and switch to landscape it remains unscaled or view looks somewhat messed up. If you go back to the mode it started in then it looks perfectly fine.
Gonna try the Qthreaded app though.

Iris browser brings WebKit to Windows Mobile

The Windows Mobile browser market is getting awful crowded lately, and the latest entrant brings a little Apple to the mix -- the Iris browser, from Torch Mobile, is based on WebKit, the same KHTML-derived rendering engine in Safari. We won't know how it compares to the iPhone's Mobile Safari until we get a chance to play with it, of course, but with support for touch, rotation, tabbed browsing and multiple windows, a customizable interface, and Netscape plugins, it's safe to say that we'll be keeping an eye on this one. If you're feeling brave, the preview release is available just beyond the read link. - Engadet.com

Any ideas what gestures work with this?
I tried a couple of Iphone ones (double tap & moving fingers apart) but they don't seem to do much except activate the Cube on my Vario III. Will we have to disable the cube?
Can't find much help on Torchmobile's website, either.

that's multitouch (hardware). Kaiser doesn't have that.
you want to tell me the kaiser is unable to understand a dual touch command? (two motions on seperate parts of the screen) that has got to be software controlled not hardware no?
I installed it, and sure it renders nicely, but it's painfully slow.

I believe it's a limitation of the hardware. You know...one set of input signals at a time and all...

Does anyone know what gestures *do* work with this.
Have tried it - and it stinks. Slow - no fancy features. Nothing. Its very far from being any use. Maybe in a "real" and finished version. Even IE Mobile is better...
But good to share the link - we must try new stuff..
I used it for about 10 sec. bweeeeeeeh...

Not at all!
That's entirely hardware!
The kaiser (as with nearly every other touch screen of the sort) can only respond to one point of touch. The touch film acts as two giant resistors (x coordinate and y coordinate), and and as such, has a hardware limitation of only one input coordinate.
There is a relatively new technology called a capacitive touchscreen, which is used in the iphone and allows for multiple points of input.

very enlightening, i was under a similar impression... although, with the limit of how slow the touch renenderingas is... maybe we should focus on how to make this more responsive lol... (i know, we're missing drivers) and then from there... maybe instead of using two points of recognition... maybe we can do something similar to the picsel browser using a double tap... that was very effective.

best browsing experience on touch pro

hey guys, i was thoroughly disappointed with opera mobiles performance.. it really sucked (for me at least). Page would take a long time to open, and the windows would move all over the place while the page was loading, etc. Anyways, i finally decided to download opera mini and its a world of a difference, its amazing! however to do it correctly, follow this guys advise:
http://mobilitysite.com/2008/06/running-opera-mini-41-on-windows-mobile-2/
dont just go to operamini.com and download the version they tell you, because then you have to agree to that message everytime you go to a page. if you do it the way this guy says, you only have to give permission the first time you open opera. he also shows you a way to have it as a program, eliminating the need to open the jbed java app to launch from there.
another thing i did, is because our device is vga, the font was small. i set it to extra large, and its very good. even the scrolling is much better on the mini version, and ITS MUCH FASTER!! i cant emphasize the last one enough. anyways, just wanted to let u guys know, good luck
ps: also, something that is huge for me, typing something into a webpage is also much better now. on opera mobile, i would have to try to fit the screen size so i can see what i'm typing; with opera mini, it opens a new window for you to t ype in, it's like your typing in word or something. makes a huge difference IMO
omar
I couldn't agree more.
Unless something is wrong with just my phone, I can't see how anyone would like Opera Mobile.
Just open any forum page here. Probably takes 20-30 seconds to load on Opera Mobile on a fast Wifi connection...and that's after it takes 5-10 seconds to just load up.
Do it on Opera Mini and it takes maybe 2 on a 1x connection, even.
Opera Mini doesn't have tabs, but you are saving so much time elsewhere, that's livable.
It also runs through a proxy, so I guess you could get stale pages or https stuff won't work great.
But, for 95% of the browsing I do, Mini works perfectly and is unbelievably fast and it's clear on the vga screen.
I also chose Extra Large fonts.
If you decide to use Opera Mini, here's a way to make it the "default" for opening links.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384271
Have you guys tried the newer version of Skyfire? If so, do you like Mini better?
ya i use mini much more than mobile
btw just download this zip, extract cab and install it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=113596&d=1221663410
it will ask if u want to make mini default browser...also installs java if u dont have it.
i change my image quality to high and font to biggest settings
I'm using UCWEB6 and I'm quite satisfied. Fast enough, tabbed browsing, easy to use..
yeah, im done using opera mobile, mini works so good!
i also use piscel and sometimes skyfire if im next to an ac jack... ill use ie just as i do on desktop, BUSINESS ONLY!
I used Opera Mobile for about a minute....
Help: I am having a problem with Mini not fully loading pages and getting white screens. I have Jbed 2.1 (read it was better than the newest version) and the newest Mini. Any advise?
I love the speed of Mini (thanks for posting the download link), but even on extra large the text is very very small. Is there a way to make it show up bigger?

No, I'm using this one. It says ppc2003 but it's working fine on all my devices, supports both VGA and QVGA
im using a mix of ucweb and operamini.. loving it. the only thing wrong with this phone is the lack of softkeys.. makes browsing with mini a little harder..
I've been using the "vga" version of skyfire since it came out, and I love it for its full browsing experience, speed, and ability to watch video in the browser.
Thank you for this thread!
I never used opera mini before and I was amazed by it's speed. It's not going to be my default browser (that's still PIE because I almost only view sites which are optimized for mobile devices) but it's absolutely perfect for viewing this forum for example!

This crashed for me. Whole device froze up.
Opera Mobile.. it's just CRAP compared to Opera Mini.
CONS Opera Mobile:
- load time (HTC/Opera cheat by preloading Opera at StartUp)
- lots of squares while dragging
- many times while you drag the stupid software cannot make difference between dragging and tapping
- if you drag the page and the page is still loading, you are dropped to other position that you are.. this is so annoying.. you have to drag again or wait until all the page elements are loaded by the browser
So, Opera Mini is very good on the majority of sites. (there are problem with the pages with many images, it cannot handle all of them).
I'm using a VGA version of jbed and I don't have problem with font size ANYMORE.
Big thanks to trueg. Get it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2973176&postcount=23
if i'm not mistaken, the reason why opera mini is so fast is because the pages are actually cached or pre-processed by Opera servers and then sent to you. with Opera mobile, you connect to the website directly.

That's very strange. It works great on my Blueangel, Wizard, Universal, Trinity and Raphael with all the custom roms I have installed on them and with the shipped rom on the Raphael the first day I got it.
Try installing on the SD card or the device memory, whichever you haven't tried.
Still have to say yes
Anyone else having issues with still having to click yes every time you try and go to a site? If I exit and open, the first time I try to open I get this annoying request. Followed the directions exactly and had no problems?

Various Problems with Fuze

Ok forgive me for actually posting a new thread. I am about to give up on the fuze and thought I would try to ask a few questions first.
Background: I was an early adopter of winmo phones (had a Wallaby, Alpine, Hermes, gave up on a kaiser and went finally to a Nokia n95 until my current trials with the iphone and the fuze) Frankly, before I was the mom of three kids I could manage to keep up with the technology, but now it all might be more than I can handle. You tell me if these are stupid questions I should know the answer to already.
I tried the iphone for 30 days, loved the out of the box ease of use but couldn't believe there was no voice dialing, cut and paste, video, etc. Now I am trying the fuze.
I managed to load up energy rom 3.0 the first day I got it, so that is what I am running. It is beautiful.
Problems:
-lower screen flicker (looked it up, changing to less than optimal brightness does not stop this from happening intermittently)
-youtube wont run (says there is not enough storage space to run - req 8mb - but I have more than 12 free)
-Even though I have it set not to delete my email off the server, it does. Then each time it connects it deletes ALL my mail off the phone. This appears to be a new problem, but a big one.
-browsing is clunky with IE and opera. Can I run safari on this thing because it worked great on the iphone - much more smooth and quick on the att network (sorry, true).
-finally found a storage card that the phone could actually see. Now I am wondering if there is an easy way to move all sorts of files over to the card. Are all files safe to move to the card? Can I move programs? Can I move my more than 300 contacts over there?
-google maps finds me in budapest more often than Austin TX (where I really am) what gives with that?
- I do miss that nice big screen on the iphone. So when is the fuze 2 really going to get here? Anyone think it is worth waiting for? This fuze is costing me a 2 year contract and I could wait...
Thank you in advance! I have spent hours in this forum trying to find answers to my questions. Now I am just asking and I hope I won't be flamed out of existence.

Which e-mail do you use? I haven't had any problems like this using gmail. It's possible you need to look in your e-mail settings online to see if they are set to keep e-mails on the server as well. If you're using POP mail that's a possibility. I use IMAP on gmail which functions very well, even marking e-mails you read on the phone as read online.

You can install programs to the storage card, but I don't recommend moving them manually. The registry still thinks the programs are on the phone storage. Other files such as music or pictures should be fine though. You can set your camera to take pictures to the card as well. I don't think you can store your contacts on the memory card, why would you need to? Contacts are nothing more than text, surely they aren't taking up much memory at all.

The Touch Pro 2 is supposed to be out later this year on AT&T. Apparently it's out right now but that's the HTC branded version and it's almost $1000. It's a 3.6" screen at 480x800 resolution, that sounds pretty good compared to the iPhone to me. Running WM means it'll still be a resistive touch screen which means it will never be as fluid to use as the iPhone's is. Still, with an interface like TF3D or SPB Mobile Shell 3 you can enjoy swiping your finger just as much.
Hope I was helpful on some points
I suggest trying different ROMs. Not that there is anything wrong with the one you are using but each one suits different users differently. I am a fairly new user to winmo (about 6 months) and one thing that surprized me the most is how much research and time it takes to get the device working to my satisfaction. I love the fuze, I like to tinker and tweak things.

Man, if you are having problem with EMAIL
just go to GMAIL
i cant believe the time i waste at hotmail....
I have the PRO and dont found a way to keep the emails at server, then, just go to GMAIL, configure to that (keep in server), and CONFIGURE: to gmail get the emails from HOTMAIL. Well, im so happy when i saw that option!

We don't flame people who provide details about their problems/concerns, who search first, and who aren't militant about getting a response.
I hope something I provided helps.
In regards to the GPS problem with your location, tap the clock on the homescreen and make sure it has your timezone selected as your "Home City". Google Maps uses this as a default location just to speed up GPS fix time.
If the setting is correct, go to Start -> Settings -> Clocks and Alarms and make sure your city is selected there too, since this is a somewhat known bug in the newer version of TouchFlo3d v2 (sometimes called TF3D2, extracted from the HTC Topaz and Rhodium).
For your browsing experience, check out the new version of Opera Mobile 9.7 -- turn on Turbo Mode and it's SO FAST! I'm loving it, even my friends with iPhones are jealous
I hope this helps you somehow

Something useful for my phone to do while docked?

This is sort of a goofy request, but I'll make it anyways. My phone spends my workday sitting a little dock next to my monitor. It doesn't do a whole lot, sitting there.
Is there any way to make my phone do something handy / interesting while it's docked? I know you can use a WM device as a Sideshow monitor, but I'm using XP at work so no luck there. I know the Blackberry storm shows a nice analog clock display. I wouldn't mind that. Even something as simple as a slideshow screensaver would be better than just looking at my Kaiser's "desktop" all day.
Any help? My only specific requirement is that it should run automatically when activesync connects.
Edit: I should add that it's a landscape dock, so programs that display in landscape get bonus points. But I'd be interested in portrait stuff as well, since a coworker has a portrait dock and would also be interested.

or watch internet TV... i have it turned on the whole day on my office desk. ... SPB TV (not free) is good.
or just run some videos.
You can use SPB Time. It has some badass clock screensavers.
Resco Photo Viewer has good slideshow options.
I use it for a second/side monitor. I didn't understand what you meant by the XP part? I have XP and it works perfectly. Try Inobec SideWindow .

I'm also interested in this, I remember something ages ago that did this but can't think of the name of it, and as the op said "My only specific requirement is that it should run automatically when active sync connects." that is fairly crucial, I just want it to auto run when I drop my phone into its dock, no interaction needed.
