htc s710 being delivered - excited - recommendations for software ? - HTC Vox

Hi,
this is my first WM6 phone. I guess some of the software I would have normally loaded on a WM5 or 2003 phone might now be redundant.
Would appreciate if folk would relay their experiences on:
1. Useful Utility software
2. Games that work well
3. How is MS Live - is there any point in IM+ ?
much appreciated
rgds

Just received mine !! you won't be disappointed. I'll let you know if I find software that works well.

I have just installed Facade and Papyrus from sbsh.net, relly nice apps that make the homepage and calendar much better. Papyrus does not work in landscape mode yet though, maybe an update will come out soon.
For surfing i use Opera mini, much nicer than internet explorer.

Hi,
yes it runs on Java, so you first have to start java, then opera. Maybe it's possible to start java with opera directly somehow.
rgrds Björn

Mine is being delivered today as well . I plan to try the new version of IM+ in which they FINALLY added an autoconnect feature that will reconnect the client after a phone call. Before I had to manually reconnect the program. If it works I'll definitely post a follow up.
Though I wish there was a sms thread app like the palm version for the treo.

hi
indeed theres a app similar to the palm messaging.
there is also txtman, wich looks better but crashes every time a sms is recieved...
Qthreader works well, so enjoy...

forget to mention, despite working well there is some flaws... :S
some characters are displayng incorrectly in sent and recieved sms's (me think's that it must have something to do with unicode suport).
but try it... nothing to lose (except hope for threaded sms app)

Just tested IM+ on a trial basis and had some trouble with it. Although it runs in landscape and portrait mode, it can't switch between the modes once its started already. If you start in portrait mode and switch to landscape it remains unscaled or view looks somewhat messed up. If you go back to the mode it started in then it looks perfectly fine.
Gonna try the Qthreaded app though.

New version of Opera?

Someone emailed me this link at PPCT, but didn't get to try it yet...
http://opera.dl2.vipserver.ru/winmobile/860/
Has a VZW version, too. :?:
Yeah, the long awaited update of Opera is out.
U can also find it here
and this time its a 30 day trial after which you would have to pay if you want to keep using the program.
Has anyone tested and could give an opinion?
I'm using at the moment, seems much the same as the previous beta.
Still regularly has the annoying 1-2 second lag between clicking a link and it actually doing anything, apart from that its all good.
I am finding it more buggy than the beta. It takes aaaaggggesss to start up too. No way will i buy buying this. The double space bug is fixed though.
I installed it on my SPV M3000 (HTC Wizard), and I'm not too glad with the result. Why?
-Yes, it takes a lot of time to load (about 30 seconds)
-Settings menu: nothing is written on the tabs, except "General" one!
-Settings menu: impossible to change the "Identify as..." (to Internet 6.0 for example)
Is it my installation or everyone got the same problems?
yes, i have bought it..its really fast on my BA running WM2003SE
also, very nice with the internet standards

Great, I'm glad for you.
Can you check if your settings look all right (Menu, Tools, settings) Can you see all the tabs properly?
yep its very fast and very useful but its not free thats the problem if anybody have cr**k ?
Dreadful
I ended up buying it and I am now totally p****d of with it. It takes around 10 seconds to load, when I am surfing the net and someone phones, it crashes. When I go into standby and reopen it, it crashes, and I have to click on a link several times before it will eventually work.
It is definitely not ready for release, they should of created another beta. Can anyone recommend any other decent browsers?
PIE Plus 2.0 from Reensoft is a nice plugin which makes PIE much nicer and more efficient.
Does someone know how to change the dll to be able to use Opera 8.6 with Imode HD as it was possible with previous version?

Opera mini beta

Hello,
I didnt wanted to keep it to myself this great browser.
This is soo much faster and better, that it is really worth trying.
If you have seen deepfish ill say, it is better than that, and ill say it is better than picsel browser and ill say it is better than anyother browser.
So if you like browsing through your ppc do not forget this little piece of software.

yes coz its in beta, and your phone will have a bad rom.
Coz it doesnt happen to me with nbd(zoki) version install
Doesn't work for me either. It just hangs when trying to load.
No luck on my Jasjam either. Closes by itself or hangs.
I found the Intent Midlet Manager on XDA-Developers.
It normally comes with HTC phones, but the T-mobile MDA is an exception for some reason.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286604
PS- It does work with that program.
Opera Mini 4 is kinda buggy yet and likes to lock up sometimes, but it does a great job of rendering regular webpages for a small screen. Seems alot like the Wii version. The ability to "grab" and scroll through documents and zoom in by clicking is pretty easy. I wish they would put a button for OK on the screen that you enter text (like addresses) though. After you type the address, you'd assume you could hit enter, but it just jumps to the next line. You have to push the menu button in the lower right and chose OK.
I can't wait for this to be finished. I wish they'd make a Windows Mobile version of this without Java. This is much better than Opera Mobile (well except stability)
Its working fine on my 6800 for the last few days. No hangups at all. Does anyone know how to get a direct shortcut to the opera mini beta?
Something with executing the java program with command line functions, or am I way off?
Guys and gals, make sure you follow my articles & guides. I've published a LOT of info on both the 3.x and the 4.0beta versions of Opera Mini in both my Pocket PC and Smartphone Web Browsing Bibles.
Intent MM although superior, crashes current Mini beta quite often. I found out that Esmertec MM works, but doesn't really support the touchscreen well and it's not as fluid.
I do not recommend changing to Esmertec, as new beta is coming this Thursday and it probably has better support for Intent.

Are you wanting a shortcut where you can execute opera mini from the Today screen? If you have the extended version of Battery Status, or other launch programs, a shortcut can be made from these.

I don't have the beta version, so I can't answer your ? I'm assuming it being beta probably supports flash like its big brother, and should feed videos from web pages.

The "lightbulb" icon.
Better than picsel, are you kidding ??
Opera mini can't even support a touch screen, it's just patethic and also no designed for pocket pc at all, it's for normal java phones.

Where did you get that idea? Opera mini is fully controllable with touch if the midlet manager supports it. Intent MM does.
Onscreen buttons -check
Dragging -check
Tap to zoom -check

Yes, all of the current midlet managers support both link clicking / focus traversing and arbitrary scrolling using the scrollbar.

new beowser client Teashark

Hi guys take a look at this
http://teashark.com/index.html
just tryed it has some bugs but it is very promising
portrait to landscape on my vox turns in less than a second
it as tabs with preview and it is very responsive....
SSL connections do work well also.
It's based on Webkit the same engine that moves Safari 3.
and i forgot to say that is free
How did you get it to work when the site says that it is not for Windows Mobile at the moment?
Roland
Hey Rolandh did you notice that your signature has a typo
It's a jad/jar file so it works perfectly on esmertec Jbed...like operamini.etc...
simply Point your WAP browser at wap.teashark.com.
or download TeaShark from your PC and transfer it to your phone: http://teashark.com/download.html

Meh. It looks really good with the panning and cursor but the font isn't configurable. I really like the way the history and back works with be able to jump all the way back or just a few pages using the preview icon. That is really good.
When it comes out of BETA, it's going to be great.
its strange this program is SO similar to opera mini, even the menus are almost the same. its either a copied version of opera mini, or a modded version of it! hmmm..
Well, it's based on Web Kit, so it aint just a copy!
This browser is great!!
I didn't notice that many bug. I reported one regarding the full azerty keyboard : some keys won't work as expected.
I'm not sure why but the fonts really look ugly when I run Java applications (so same with opera mini); is there any way to enable some anti aliasing or something similar ?
I think this is a very cool browser.
If you have problems with your qwerty keyboard, select edit when entering an adress It will work like this.
For the fonts and antialiasing, I guess you are running JBed - Build 20071119.3.1. If so, antialiasing it`s not working.
Other than that, it is an interestng browser. Let`s say it might be a competition in the future for Opera mini.

best browsing experience on touch pro

hey guys, i was thoroughly disappointed with opera mobiles performance.. it really sucked (for me at least). Page would take a long time to open, and the windows would move all over the place while the page was loading, etc. Anyways, i finally decided to download opera mini and its a world of a difference, its amazing! however to do it correctly, follow this guys advise:
http://mobilitysite.com/2008/06/running-opera-mini-41-on-windows-mobile-2/
dont just go to operamini.com and download the version they tell you, because then you have to agree to that message everytime you go to a page. if you do it the way this guy says, you only have to give permission the first time you open opera. he also shows you a way to have it as a program, eliminating the need to open the jbed java app to launch from there.
another thing i did, is because our device is vga, the font was small. i set it to extra large, and its very good. even the scrolling is much better on the mini version, and ITS MUCH FASTER!! i cant emphasize the last one enough. anyways, just wanted to let u guys know, good luck
ps: also, something that is huge for me, typing something into a webpage is also much better now. on opera mobile, i would have to try to fit the screen size so i can see what i'm typing; with opera mini, it opens a new window for you to t ype in, it's like your typing in word or something. makes a huge difference IMO
omar
I couldn't agree more.
Unless something is wrong with just my phone, I can't see how anyone would like Opera Mobile.
Just open any forum page here. Probably takes 20-30 seconds to load on Opera Mobile on a fast Wifi connection...and that's after it takes 5-10 seconds to just load up.
Do it on Opera Mini and it takes maybe 2 on a 1x connection, even.
Opera Mini doesn't have tabs, but you are saving so much time elsewhere, that's livable.
It also runs through a proxy, so I guess you could get stale pages or https stuff won't work great.
But, for 95% of the browsing I do, Mini works perfectly and is unbelievably fast and it's clear on the vga screen.
I also chose Extra Large fonts.
If you decide to use Opera Mini, here's a way to make it the "default" for opening links.

Have you guys tried the newer version of Skyfire? If so, do you like Mini better?
ya i use mini much more than mobile
btw just download this zip, extract cab and install it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=113596&d=1221663410
it will ask if u want to make mini default browser...also installs java if u dont have it.
i change my image quality to high and font to biggest settings
I'm using UCWEB6 and I'm quite satisfied. Fast enough, tabbed browsing, easy to use..
yeah, im done using opera mobile, mini works so good!
i also use piscel and sometimes skyfire if im next to an ac jack... ill use ie just as i do on desktop, BUSINESS ONLY!
I used Opera Mobile for about a minute....
Help: I am having a problem with Mini not fully loading pages and getting white screens. I have Jbed 2.1 (read it was better than the newest version) and the newest Mini. Any advise?
I love the speed of Mini (thanks for posting the download link), but even on extra large the text is very very small. Is there a way to make it show up bigger?

Are you using the generic version? Seems like UCWEB6 was made for Nokia devices not HTC
Another opera mini fan here, the fastest browser I have used, that includes skyfire. Only issue is lack of tabs, but otherwise its great

No, I'm using this one. It says ppc2003 but it's working fine on all my devices, supports both VGA and QVGA
im using a mix of ucweb and operamini.. loving it. the only thing wrong with this phone is the lack of softkeys.. makes browsing with mini a little harder..
I've been using the "vga" version of skyfire since it came out, and I love it for its full browsing experience, speed, and ability to watch video in the browser.
Thank you for this thread!
I never used opera mini before and I was amazed by it's speed. It's not going to be my default browser (that's still PIE because I almost only view sites which are optimized for mobile devices) but it's absolutely perfect for viewing this forum for example!

This crashed for me. Whole device froze up.
Opera Mobile.. it's just CRAP compared to Opera Mini.
CONS Opera Mobile:
- load time (HTC/Opera cheat by preloading Opera at StartUp)
- lots of squares while dragging
- many times while you drag the stupid software cannot make difference between dragging and tapping
- if you drag the page and the page is still loading, you are dropped to other position that you are.. this is so annoying.. you have to drag again or wait until all the page elements are loaded by the browser
So, Opera Mini is very good on the majority of sites. (there are problem with the pages with many images, it cannot handle all of them).
I'm using a VGA version of jbed and I don't have problem with font size ANYMORE.
Big thanks to trueg. Get it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2973176&postcount=23
if i'm not mistaken, the reason why opera mini is so fast is because the pages are actually cached or pre-processed by Opera servers and then sent to you. with Opera mobile, you connect to the website directly.

That's very strange. It works great on my Blueangel, Wizard, Universal, Trinity and Raphael with all the custom roms I have installed on them and with the shipped rom on the Raphael the first day I got it.
Try installing on the SD card or the device memory, whichever you haven't tried.
Still have to say yes
Anyone else having issues with still having to click yes every time you try and go to a site? If I exit and open, the first time I try to open I get this annoying request. Followed the directions exactly and had no problems?
Also can't seem to browse with this on wifi, anyone else having this issue?

Javascript in Opera Mobile

I was using TyTN II before I got the fuze, and using opera on the TyTN II I could access hotmail and google reader's iphone interface through opera mobile(not opera mini). However I can not do that on the opera browser on the fuze. When I install macromedia flash player 7 google reader starts to work(however without the stars to mark the items) but on a soft reset it stops working, the starting page loads up but the items do not display. The same goes for hotmail which works with a fresh install of flash player 7(again inbox displays but nothing happens on clicking e-mail items) and stops working on a soft reset. I am confused as to what is happening here. Sorry if this has been answered, I could not find it. Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to change the user agent as that renders cingular video unusable for me.
Still looking for help on this issue......
I know what you mean. On my "good old" HTC Touch I could do almost anything with Opera, but now I can't with my Pro.
If anybody knows something more about this, please help us. I would really use my online stock-trader application again; now I'm stuck with the mobile version...
BTW, Could it possible be a JAVA-issue? Somewhere oOn JAVA.COM I read that they don't support Windows Mobile anymore?
Edit: just saw the Title: "Javascript in Opera Mobile", so it IS a JAVA-issue I guess...
Ya, I would have said to change the user agent, but you said you don't want to do that. As far as flash I didn't think that Opera supported it. Skyfire does. It does pretty well actually, to the point you can watch you tube videos on the actuall website. not the mobile site. It isn't quite as good of resolution, but you might want to give it a shot.
It's weird that the things I mentioned were wokring fine on opera mobile on my TyTN II, but have problems on the fuze. Like I said after a fresh install of macromedia flash player 7, they seem to work partially but stop working after a soft reset. There is got to be a solution to this. Advanced users help please.
are you talking about this? It works fine on mine.
[edit]
I don't know how exactly everything's supposed to work, but some portions don't work for me either, even under ie and firefox (desktop)
I think this is related with some kind of ajax library not fully supported in this current Opera Mobile version. As far as I can see for example at http://www.google.com/ig/i the igoogle gadgets simply don't get their content displayed (maybe a problem with iframe refresh?)
I add it working though with the latest OperaMobile cab version downloaded from Opera's website.
Is there a way to have that one running just like the preinstalled one and not as an alternate browser?
Just found another mobile browser, called "Irisbrowser", that almost supports anything. IMO its better than Opera but hasn't got the nice looks of Opera. But works fine with Flash/JAVA etc.
If any of you still have any problems with Opera, you can install and try the Beta version of Irisbrowser. It's available for free at http://www.irisbrowser.com/
I'm currently running Opera Mobile 9.5.15202 (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459378) and, at least with http://google.com/ig/i, it just works great!
