user confirm with connecting to internet through GPRS/EDGE - Touch Pro, Fuze General

hi
is there some way to make phone asking me before connect to internet with mobile network ? (not wifi, bt, activesync) ...
example: im connected to net throught wifi ,browsing with opera but when connection is lost - phone automatically switch to edge/gprs - and i have no pre-paid data tarif , sou money runs out...

Same question
Yes, can anyone help with this one. For example, even if i'm connected to a wifi network and using the internet in opera, if I update the weather or send/receive my emails it will automatically connect to the mobile internet and download using this instead of the wireless.
The only thing I found was to turn the phone off (in comm manager, select phone to off), which forces it to download data using the wifi.
Can anybody help?

problem that you describe is not exactly what is my problem ,if i have established connection with wifi - internet is automatically go throught it,
maybe ....,have you got "The Internet" in preferences of your AP in settings > connections > Wireless lan > $essid (or under menu > edit ) ? (and you must be connected before you start using internet - opera ,updating or etc , thats for sure this will not automatically turn on and connect thrue wifi )
my question si only about "ask me before i will establish connection to the mobile internet network"

why not use NoData, you can shut down the data connection...

you mean create an empty profile in conections ? yes , sure , this working, i have it but sometime i want use this , so i must go to settings and switch to working profile and ..... its annoying, is there any other way ? in windows stile you know , "are you sure with blahblahblah" - my old W850i have this function ,every application which would like to connect run dialog "can this application connect to internet ?" and i can choose "permanently" or "ask me every time" ...somethink like this

No, I mean using a program called Nodata. I presume you are using GSM/Edge/3G data only when absolutely needed, and this program gives you the option to easily shut down any GSM related data connection (Edges, GPRS, etc)..
Check http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/

thanks ! - this help ,not for whole idea , but make thinks more easily

I would like to use my HTC Cruise as a modem.
So that it is possible that i have the internet on my laptop.
From my mobile.
I know that it is not usual to do this all the time. But for know it not working.
can somebody help me?
I'm french but plug the PDA on your PC with USB cable
And in program you must have a program internet share (I don't know if in english it is the good word)
Launch it and click on connect
I tried to find it,
but when I connect it to my pc with my usb cable. I only get the program to synchronise. Because it's Vista.
How do i find the internetconnection anywhere else?
this program is on the PPC start -> program
On Vista you need Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 that you can download from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx. It comes in both x64 and x86 flavors.
You also need to run the Internet Sharing application on your phone. On my unbranded HTC Touch Cruise there was no link to that application in Start/Programs. What you have to do, is to go into the Windows folder and run the IntShrUi.exe.
I'm not quite sure, but I think that it automatically creates a link for you in your Programs folder (Windows\Start Menu\Programs\). If it doesn't, you can do that yourself. The link should also be in the windows folder (IntShrUi.lnk) and you can just copy that manually to your Programs folder.
ovidiaconescu, I have an unbranded Cruise as well with the Stock ROM and had that icon in Programs. Don't remember doing anything to get it there.
Internet Sharing app is on the PPC. Here are directions, note that these are from someone else's post in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337714) I have put them here for convenience:
To set up your device as a USB modem
1. On your device, tap Start > Programs > Internet Sharing.
2. In the PC Connection list, select USB.
3. In the Network Connection list, select the name of the connection that your device uses to connect to the Internet.
4. Plug in the USB cable between your device and the computer.
5. Tap Connect.
To end the Internet connection
On the Internet Sharing screen, tap Disconnect.
To set up your device as a bluetooth modem
1. On your device, turn on Bluetooth and set it to visible mode.
2. Initiate a Bluetooth partnership from your device
3. Tap Start > Programs > Accessories > Internet Sharing.
4. Select Bluetooth PAN as the PC Connection.
5. From the Network Connection list, select the name of the connection that your device uses to connect to the Internet.
6. Tap Connect.
7. On your computer, set up a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) with your device:
For Windows Vista:
a. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
b. Click Manage network connections and then under Personal Area Network, double-click Bluetooth Network Connection.
c. In the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Devices dialog box, select your device, then click Connect.
For Windows XP:
a. Tap Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
b. Under Personal Area Network, click the Bluetooth Network Connection icon.
c. Under Network Tasks, click View Bluetooth network devices.
d. In the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Devices dialog box, select your device, then click Connect.
8. On the Internet Sharing screen on your device, check if a connected status is displayed, which indicates that your computer has been successfully connected to the Internet using your device as a Bluetooth modem.
Do you think it's possible to do the same kind of thing to access internet with an Archos 605 ??
Hi,
I succeeded to access internet by my WAP connexion mobile on my computer. But some website like gmail or hotmail are not reachable... Does someone have any idea?

Check email through USB internet connection, how? (HTC Touch Pro / Raphael)

2 Questions:
[Question 1] - SOLVED & Thanks to all~
I want to use my Touch Pro to check my hotmail through USB internet connection with my PC. *Not Outlook @ my PPC.
What I've done:
1. I've set up an Hotmail account at my Touch Pro
2. I've tested to check Hotmail using HSDPA/3G/EDGE connection, everything is fine.
3. After plugging with my USB to my PC, I can browse internet through Opera.
Problem:
1. But with the USB connected to my PC, everytime I try to check my Hotmail from my Touch Pro, it starts connecting to internet by itself using HSDPA/3G/EDGE.
2. How to make it to use my USB connection?
[Question 2] (NEW & not solve yet > added & edited @ 17/10/2008)
Another question (but still regarding check email through USB).
My Touch-Pro is sync with my office PC's Outlook with my POP3 email. I'm at home now connected USB to my home PC (with Internet), can I use my mobile to check that outlook email through this USB connection?
Please, please, please help...

I don 't know how to select your internet connection actually. But you can allways block your HSDPA/3G/EDGE internet connection with NoDATA software (freeware, just two screen taps) enforcing your mobile use USB.
If anyone knows another solution I 'll be happy to hear.
I have an 838pro, but I usually just close any data connections first, then when the box pops up saying its going to connect via 3g, I cancel it and then it defaults to the usb/wifi connection. It seems WML defaults to using your 3g connection every time so unfortunately you have to do this every time.
Cheers
Thanks for the fast reply, will try both and update this thread again.
Btw, any chance we can modify the registry or etc to change the default connection?
Hey, it works! I've install NoData and use it to disable my Touch Pro 3G/GPRS connection, and check my Hotmail, and it works perfectly!
Thanks, freco & wireless
Glad you got it sorted - just a quick thought...
In the Activesync connection settings there is an option File > Connection Settings > "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to desktop" - if you disabled/unchecked this would it not do the same thing?
I think "wireless connection" means WiFi.
If you 're wright when cradled or usb connected you cannot make or recieve calls with these setting, which is not happening.

I thougt it only applied to data - I've certainly made calls with my device docked. I`ll have a play with my htc later...
Just some update to this thread, I just have my Touch Pro 'hard-reset' due to touch panel was not functioning, and now after total hard-reset ...
I can use the USB connection without having 'NoData' installed...
wondering why...
in activesync connection settings, untick 'Allow wirelss connection on device when connected to desktop'
this should work
For each email account you have to manually choose which type of connection to use.
In email got to:
Menu->Tools->Options, select email, ->Edit account setup->Advanced Server Settings.
Now you can choose if you want the email to use GPRS or Wifi but you have to do this whole thing everytime you change! Not good.
For USB connection I don't know - could you perhaps tell us what it is using?
Thanks.

Huh, I installed it on my Fuze, turned off both data connections shown, launched Opera and it went right online via 3G! I then tried a soft reset and found the same behavior. The program seems to do nothing.
To solve this issue without downloading or using any extra piece of software:
1. Through Settings > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. select Advanced > Select Networks > then choose My ISP as your internet communication method
3. choose New > enter any name you like then select a modem type "Hayes Compatible on COM1" or any option rather than Cellular GPRS, 3G.
4. the trick, just enter *99***2# in the required phone number as this is a Windows-based code to directly call a device for internet connection where you can replace the number 2 with any other number for multiple sharing internet connection with different devices at the same time.
Now everything will work just fine
Important notes:
-------------------
Make sure that:
1. in the "Network Connections" in Microsoft Windows XP or Vista you have a new icon of "Internet Connection" under Internet Gateway that appeared once you have connected your HTC in ActiveSync or WMDC 6.1 modes.
Hint:
you can use Internet Sharing application installed in HTC in order to create a new ISP connection profile instead of going through Connections option.
Hope this contribution could be usfeul,
Thanks

Can't get Bluetooth PAN WM to WM to work

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to get on the internet with my Axim x51v.
And I'm using my Touch Cruise as BT PAN access point (using the Internet sharing option).
I've installer the widcomm bluetooth stack on my x51v, because the Microsoft stack cannot connect to a PAN.
Settings up the PAN connection works perfectly, the x51v even got his IP from the Cruise his DHCP.
But... when I'm trying to browse to a website, it goes wrong
Internet Explorer on the x51v gives the message: "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again."
I also installed a network sniffer on the Cruise to check which data is send.
This sniffer views the DHCP request, no problem there.
But when I request a website, there are some ARP requests and responses.
AND... there are to packet who look like DNS requests to me, but there source address is the x51v's MAC address and th destination is the Cruise, and there's never a response.
So... I tried to connect to a website by IP instead of hostname, to check if this is a DNS problem, but without any luck
But there is a difference, the sniffer now only shows the ARP requests and responses and Internet Explorer gives a different message: "The page cannot be displayed or donwloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Sorry for the long story... I hope someone can help me with this problem
Or point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance
did you try working with something other than the x51v?
btw, if you want to save yourself the headache, purchase WMWifiRouter..
I also tested this with my PC and Cruise and it worked perfectly. I was able to access the internet through the Cruise.
Forgot to mention that I did try WMWifiRouter, but got the same problem.
edit:
Maybe its usefull to know that the x51v is running WM6.1 (from Football) and the Cruise is running the official WM6.1 ROM from HTC.
Maybe someone knows another way to access the internet on the x51v through the Cruise.
I did also try the Wifi to 3G option from WMWifiRouter. At first the connection was to unstable to browse, but this problem seems to be solved by holding the Cruise further away from the x51v . But with a distance of almost 3 meters the connection still isn't stable enough, it reconnect about every minute.
And I think a distance of 3 meters between the two devices is to much.
Would it be possible to share the Cruise his internet connection over USB?
My idea is to do this using this CF USB card for the x51v.
if the polaris can read your device as a regular syncing device (like a pc or so) there's no reason why WMWifirouter won't pass your Polaris' 3G or Wifi connection to USB connection on your x51v.
I found another solution!
I (re)enabled DUN on the Cruise (throught the registry) and let the x51v dail in on the Cruise.
At first it wouldn't work, but after some messing with some settings it finally worked!
Thanks for your replies Nir36.
ahh. congrats. and a good idea it is.
if you don't mind, write the exact steps of what you did so i can put it in the GUIDES thread in the Q&A section.
Ok, here's what I did.
First to Enable DUN, which was removed since the introduction of internet sharing. (On the Cruise)

Now you have to fill in your providers username and password for your mobile internet connection. In my case (Vodafone, The Netherlands) the username and password have to be: vodafone
And Finish the wizard.
Using the WIDCOMM bluetooth stack.
Open the bluetooth manager
Create a new shortcut
Choose 'Connect to Internet via phone' and choose Next
Select your phone model (if listed) and choose Next
Make shure your phone's bluetooth is enable and set discoverable and choose Next
Select your phone, you will automaticly go to the next page
Insert a passkey you want to use to comunicate with your phone and choose Next
Accept the connection on your phone
Check the option 'Use this phone as default connection to the internet', Select 'new connection' and choose Next
Fill in a connection name and the phone number *99# (to use your phone's internet connection). And choose Next

For a wireless network do the following....
Make sure that your router is not set to hide your network (Broadcast Network option should be on).
If you have used mac protection (an option on your router) then you will need to first get the mac address of your Topaz and put into into your router security.
On your Topaz do the following:
1) Go to the communications option under the setting page.
2) Turn WiFi on.
3) Press on the Wi-Fi option and it will show a screen of networks it finds and the signal strength
4) Press on your network
5) If your network is passcode or wep enabled then you will be prompted to enter the key
6) Save the connection (move to first preference if possible so it is faster to connect)
You can now select to hide your network on your router if you want to
If you set the network to autoconnect then when you turn on your WiFi in the future the network will connect automatically if in range

How to use your android mobile phone as a modem?

The easiest and simplest way to connect to internet from your laptop using your android phone:
In your android smart phone, go to Settings -> Wireless and Network Settings -> Mobile networks and select the “Use packet data” option. Also uncheck the “Use only 2G Networks” option
Again go to Settings ->Wireless and Network Settings->Tethering and portable hotspots
Select the second option “Mobile AP”. You should see a blue wifi icon in your cellphone notification bar
Go to your laptop, IPad or any device which supports WiFi, search for available wireless networks and select “Android AP” option.
You are now connected to the internet. Just open a browser and start browsing.
Also you can connect using the USB.

You might want to change the title of the thread to:
[How To] Use phone as mobile modem
Or something to that extent. As it is, it seems like it is a question thread and you are needing help in figuring out how to do this.
Also some carrier subsidized phones don't have this option. So you can suggest using an app like Android Wireless Tether For Root Users.
Arrow How to use your android mobile phone as a modem?Arrow
There are 2 methods to use android phone as a modem:
first is to use your android as WiFi Router and
Second is to Connect using USB cable (USB Tethering)
is this post really correct?
i think that the wifi steps you are talking about isn’t about using "your phone as a mobile" but as a wi-fi hotspot that is different.
wi-fi hotspot is sharing the data connection of the mobile device (via WiFi)
tethering is using the phone as a modem, not only sharing its data connection.
or am i wrong?
Use your phone as a modem via usb or bluetooth
you can see detail on this website as1formatik.blogspot.com
you can translate with google translate if you don't speak french:good:
There are also two options:
1. Open your bluetooth on your phone and your pc or laptop, pair them.
2. On your pc or lt open network connection, select setup a new conection, from connection option, select setup a dial up connection, then enter your information there entering *999***1# dial up phone number.
3. Select connect. It will save the connections aitomaticallu.
2nd option is
1. Connect your phone via usb cable. Then follow the step from 2 to 3 of the first option
Hope this help yoi.
