Hey Raphael / Touch Pro users...
The Touch Pro was recently released in South Africa and im considering the move from my TyTN II to the Touch Pro!
There is alot of nice looking technology in the Touch Pro and its a beautiful looking device... Im just wondering if people are as unhappy after moving to the Touch Pro as they were after moving to the TyTN II / Kaiser???
Im enjoying the TyTN II, after alot of tweaking i managed to get it feeling good and with the addition of CorePlayer 1.2.5 we can now get around the disgusting video playback issue!
So my question is...
Is the Touch Pro worth it??
What do you guys think??

I think it's pretty much on what you need? TP is my first WM device and I'm had up and downs experience. I know it's a new product but just the simple phone function is having issue (not for everyone, I have the mute problem).
I like the screen resolution, the speed is acceptable. The design is great. Anyway it's a cool phone. If you love tech and have the budget, TP sure a nice toy to play around with.
I'm still using my Kaiser as well, but yes I was very happy with the upgrade.
Next is replacing the Diamond with the Touch HD
It's a good question. I heavily used a TYTN II in place of a Blackberry and when I changed jobs in September I bought a Touch Pro and don't use it as much for email anymore, but still use this functionality.
The only thing I miss is the jog wheel, that was very handy although "flicking" the screen to scroll through the mail is just as easy - just different. It's what you get used to.
I have found a number of bugs with the Touch Pro that have been widely discussed on this forum such as GPS lag, answering calls whilst in your pocket etc etc but have cured almost all of them again thanks to responses on this forum.
The Touch Pro is asthetically pleasing where as the TYTN II was purely function over form, and it has really nice touches - such as FM Radio, Opera, YouTube player all built in.
However, am I completely satisfied with the Touch Pro ? No, not completely. The GPS issue is a particular problem as I use it fairly frequently, and I'm noticing that there is an occasional breakup of or jump of sounds - voice calls, MP3's, SMS message tones - like an old record jumping - which to me take the "polish" of an otherwise accomplished device.
If I had to spend my money again at this point in time, I would be hanging on to see what the Xperia was like and then choosing - I will be watching that one with interest myself !

Ive only been using HTC devices for 2 months, but ive moved fairly quickly through devices, P4350 -> TyTN I -> TyTN II and i must say that ive come to love the HTC quality, the feel and just the way everything works, which makes me immediately hesitant to move to the X1!
The other issue i have with the X1 (and the Touch HD) Is the WVGA resolution, im worried about compatibility with existing apps, games etc! The X1 is also (in my opinion) an ugly looking device... But (considering i was a TyTN I owner hehe) this doesnt bother me that much!
I want the hardware keyboard, its the reason i moved from "regular" cellphones to these devices, so all the other HTCs and various other devices are ruled out because of lack of the hardware keyboard!
I was hoping that the Touch Pro would iron out a few issues HTC were facing, the poor video playback, the poor 3D performance etc etc... To be honest, if this isnt the case and im not missing that much, i might stick with the TyTN II for a year or so and see what happens (unless i pick up a Touch Pro for a bargain hehe), i love the tilting screen, its something ive come to use alot and im unsure as to why they decided to not include it in their new devices!

Pro's and Con's
Whilst the TyTn II is not the most exciting looking device HTC came out with, it was one of the most stable PDA's I have owned. If it had a VGA screen I would have not traded it for the Touch Pro.
OK, the TP is very sexy, has a great screen and keyboard and oodles of RAM. But it has to be the most unstable PDA I have used, with constant glitches and weird errors that cause me to soft reset a couple of times a day. I think there is a real need for HTC to bring out a new ROM build that irons out all the well publicised faults.
Having said that, I love the sheer coolness of this device and the WOW's I get from mates when they see it. So I am pleased I bought it and I wouldn't get rid of it any day soon. I will continue to put up with the glitches and keep checking these forums for solutions.
Would I recommend it? For those who want a functional office device that they toss into a briefcase without a care.... NO!

Good thing you're well informed and you know what you're talking about. "will be my first and last HTC device...", "am gonna switch over to Xperia (HTC) or G1 (HTC) or even a smart touch phone"... The only 2 phone models you named are made by HTC.
I'm looking to upgrade from my HTC Hermes. I had a Wizard before it. I've loved them both. However, the hermes really doesn't have the performance that I'm seeing from newer phones. I was about to buy a touch pro but then saw the stickied post about the horrible performance.
Are the performance issues fixable yet? From what I've read, it doesn't seem so. I've only spent a couple days looking around on the internet though so I might have just been reading old info. Is the performance still an issue?
If the performance on the htc touch pro isn't working, I'm looking for a good alternative. I didn't see a section on this forum for the "What phone should I buy?" posts so I'll just post it here I guess. I like HTC phones but don't really care about brand so long as it does what I want it to.
I need:
-AT&T 3G
-Touchscreen
-No keyboard on the front of the phone (like blackberries, etc) but a physical keyboard is not a requirement
-2.8"+ screen
-Windows Mobile 6+
-Performance! I would like to get something that is responsive for browsing and plays youtube video without horrible stuttering like my hermes.
I've had a really tough time finding benchmark results and side-by-side video playback comparison. What I do find doesn't seem to work on US 3G networks. The HTC Touch HD looked pretty good...until I read that it doesn't work with US 3G. After that, the Omnia looked pretty good...until I found out that it also doesn't work on US 3G.
Will any of the other HTC phones work for me? If not, are there even any out there that will? I really don't want to get an iPhone since the program support just isn't out there...but it's the only thing that I've seen so far that works with what I want it to do. I didn't think I was too demanding when I started searching yesterday but I'm starting to wonder if those features just aren't out there together yet.
If anyone has any ideas (or a recommendation on where to move this post if this isn't the right place), please tell me! Thanks in advance!
Your looking for the ATT Fuze most likely.
It is the Raphael branded for ATT with working 3g.
There are times when after long periods of use or having several things going at once the phone can be sluggish but clearing the memory or softbooting it makes it respond pretty quickly IMO.
Yeah, I saw that. Doesn't it have the same performance issues mentioned in the sticky post in this forum?
I've had the Fuze since its release, with no problems or "performance issues". There are always tweaks to make it better, and I've applied plenty. Or you could always flash a different ROM -- there are several of those as well. But I wouldn't be put off by what may be older or isolated incidents. The basic hardware is superb.
Don't be fooled by reports of "performance issues", or rather pay attention to exactly what kind of performance they are talking about. Youtube and web browsing are *never* cited as issues. The TP will be fine for you. It is pretty much the best on the market at this time anyway.

Totally agree. I even added a post the that "performance issues" thread, with Hermes versus Raphael benchmarks, but that was for the purposes of 3D graphics, a.k.a. gaming. Really, that's not the reason I bought the phone, and it works great other than that. Running NATF's 3.2 Fuze ROM, 1.08.25.08 radio ROM, a few additional tweaks, and a TF3D theme I like. I am very happy with this phone.
I have been getting by with leaving the ipod at home, and using a 16gb card, but I cannot wait until WM6.5 ROMs start to get cooked, if the rumors of bundled Zune software are true.
Night and day difference between the Raphael and the Hermes. Raphael is two generations more advanced than hermes and noticeably better in both performance and battery life imho. Get ready to be blown away by 640x480. You won't believe how they've improved the kbd too.
edit: If you get a fuze, ditch the POS stock rom straight off though!
The poor performance can be feeled in software and games that are using graphics.. the animation is not that smooth, you can see something called v-sync in most of the OpenGL capable software.. Even in simple aplications such as S2P opengl.. That's not limited to opengl software. I've seen that also in Opera and OS in general (landscape mode), iGO, etc.
Plus, you can notice its performance by comparing side-by-side.. same version of iGo on eten x500 (samsung 400mhz cpu) and touch pro (qualcomm 528 mhz). It starts way faster on eten. Also x500 calculates the routes faster than touch pro. I was surprised to see that..
Also, people are saying that qualcomm cpus lacks hardware FPU.. that means software based on FPU operations have poor performance in comparison with other CPUs such as Intel Xscale/Marvell, omap..
Anyway, Youtube playback is ok in Touch Pro.
You will have some problems running some hiqh quality videos (I have a matrix trailer which shutters a lot.. i have to set the video quality to medium.. but you loose quality for speed... so it's not a very good solution)

Overall device performance is better though. In the early Hermes days the graphics performance suffered as well (as the ATI ImageOn fix developer for Hermes, I can remember it well).
Over time, XDA and others fixed the platform. The same is happening on Raphael. Many chefs are incorporating developments discovered by others here. I wouldn't stick with a hermes if I could have a raphael. It does so much more than merely play movies. VGA text rendering alone is a reason to move IMHO.
just to give u an alternative that nobody mentioned; the sony ericsson xperia x1a. the x1 is already out (but it doesnt support the 850 mhz 3G band) the x1a has full at&t 3G support, and it should be offically released in the next few days. research it. its very similar to the touch pro. you'll find a few comparison threads on this forum. good luck

1-very nice but the lack of d-pad and other buttons is annoying as hell.

3-also software,themes,apps development forums will be too segmented. diamond ,diamont2,tpro,tpro2, blackstone,x1 are all very similar phones(internally). is there a clean and logical way to combine them.

My experience of HTC hardware is far from good. BlueAngel (dead speaker), two TyTN's, one TyTN II and now a TD - all and i mean ALL of them have had at least one warranty repair or replacement. Actually , thats a lie: TD was sent back for a full refund under UK consumer law as "Not Fit For Purpose" as at the time there was no way to play music without the famous skipping/pause issue.
Just fire up google and use terms like "HTC" "hardware" "fault" "Issue" and so on .... you'll soon see what a timebomb of a device you have.
My Toshiba G900 and now Omnia have restored my faith in Smartphones and there reliability.
thats odd....my TyTNII(Kaiser, from USA) has been nothing short of amazing, and it has taken its share of nasty falls!

My HTC phones all work like they did on their first day. I didnt have any hardware Problems and the software problems where solved by this nice Community.
Ok, i hve to admit that HTC really doesnt care that much software-wise... I bet they wont release proper drivers for these devices either...
Thats no problem for me though, as i wont buy another arm or qualcom based Smartphone anyway. Im up for atom-powered voice capable MIDs now.
Hmmm. Quite fancy the Pro 2. Shame it doesn't have a slightly beefier processor though. I'm sure these will be replaced by Snapdragon or Tegra devices shortly after I buy one!

my guess its just the touchwheel from diamond and tpro. not that usuful if you ask me since they could have added more usfel buttons with dpad or remove it for the sake of bigger screen or just remove it to make the phone smaller.

Sure, it's not the improvement we'd all have made. Not more RAM, not a better processor, or drivers... but it's still an improvement over the Touch Pro (unless that isn't a mockup keyboard, in which case I may cry over the colour scheme and the fact that there are LESS KEYS on that phone than the existing Touch Pro) and I'll take it. Plus, the front-facing D-Pad is a pain to use anyway that I just open it up and use my Keyboard D-Pad.

Why wont u b getting the Touch Pro 2?
I put this in the general category because I wanted to here from all the non owners, users who are going to skip the TP2 as well as the owners who want to complain about the TP2.
I was excited about this phone but I hate to go with a device that does not have a navigation pad. I have issues daily where I tap the screen or drag the screen on my Fuze and do not get the desired result so then I make use of the dpad to do what I need to do with no further problem.
Is there a reason you are going to skip the TP2? Whats it missing for you or what have you chosen over the TP2?

Acer does have a better camera and probably better drivers too. But when it comes o build quality I dis-agree with your fact. Acer phones usually have cheap plastic finish but HTC makes good casing almost in every phone model of theirs.. They're good at design or hire good designers IMHO.

But, I do very much agree with your OPINION on the design, they are usualy well designed however, in my EXPERIENCE, they are built out of crap and made very poorly.
My biggest issue with the TP2 is the relatively slower processor and lack of a headphone jack. I know it's business phone and all, but still, when other touch screen phones are one-upping you in hardware...
The TD2 has the same issues, but it's cheaper, so the qualms are a bit easier to swallow. I'm gonna have to think carefully and wait and see how much AT&T charges for each.
better processor and wm 7 ... until then htc fuze for me.

Up until this morning, I was 100% committed to getting a HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium).
This afternoon I had a play with the new Toshiba TG01.
Now I'm 50:50 on the TP2 or the TG01.
Quite a few reasons. The first is simply cost -- I don't have a cheap upgrade option currently, and it sure isn't worth the asking price without a carrier subsidy.
Lack of a 3.5mm jack is a big deal for me. While I always intend to keep a seperate PMP (I have a Zune 80 right now and might snag the HD later this year), I want my next phone to at least be a competent media player when I don't have my Zune with me. This is simply impossible without a standard headphone jack, because I won't carry an adapter with me.
The biggest reason is probably the impending release of WM7. I expect 7 to be a BIG upgrade over 6 and really a game changer for the whole WM world. I don't want to be stuck with "old" WM once 7 releases. And if 7 isn't as revolutionary as I expect/hope, I'll seriously consider jumping ship.

initialy i'd agree with you about keyboard v cpu however, you cannot compare processor Mhz across diferent manufacturers. The only test you can compare processors with (and actually indeed, entire devices) is with real world tests such as, opening a complex spreadsheet or running an emulator.
This is why all reviews run comparisons with user software running like Unreal Tournament for example or Call of Duty.
Numbers are an indicator, they are not the entire story.

Thats pretty nice that the biometric pad doubles as a navigation dpad! Does that work well?
Do you have any issues with the 128 RAM? The videos i have seen show that the screen is slow and a little less responsive. Is this your experiance? Thanks
No, quite the oposite.... its very fast and nippy device, certainly the fastest i've ever owned. Yes the memory numbers are a little low however, as long as you close any apps you dont really need open your fine. I often run Igo and either the FM player or Win Media Player and don't have any issues.
Be warned though, its not a small device. Its not Universal big but, you could easily use it to defend yourself
edit: Oh yeah, and some people have already learn't to edit the partition table which If I understand this correctly, means we will be shortly getting cooked roms that change the storage ratio - could be wrong on this though.
After looking at TPII I can't WOW. Its just another pocketpc with hardly any novelty to offer, Tilt form factor is what gives it an extra look otherwise its no better than TP IMHO

So is the screen responsive? Do u have to tap something more than once and does the screen somtimes fail to recognize a gesture? Sorry to ask again but i wasnt sure to which part of my post u were responding to. Im thinking of ordering the m900 in the next few days.
I cant justify to myself paying that sort of money for something that is not all that different to previous htc keyboard offerings. I dont have a problem with the processor its just I am so very bored of wm 6.whatever. If wm7 ever arrives then it will be a different story.
In the meantime I am going to give android and the Hero a go...

It has neither. Its a mini 5 pin usb so you need an adapter (£2 from ebay). The screen can be unresponsive at times but Acer are very aware of this and are working with us on www.4winmobile.com. We already know there is a new firmware released and are expecting it to appear on Acers website in the next week or two.
Rather than derail the thread further, it might be an idea to check out 4winmobile and go to the Acer/Eten area.

Well, after four FUZE's.... for me, my partner, and two employees, it seems like it's time for an upgrade.
I've a blast with NATF's 4 series ROMS, and after about a year, I'm looking for a new device.
I noticed that the Touch Pro has the same CPU as our trusty Raphs, so I am not thrilled with that.
I find my device rather sluggish. It's not terrible, but... well... you know how it is!
So... Does anyone have any experience with a newer device? Maybe the Touch Pro 2 IS a big improvement (better resolution / tilt keyboard...), but it doesn't appear that way.
Thoughts are most definitely welcome.
I need to order another device, and right now, I just can't think of anything beyond yet another Fuze.
I'd love to hear what you guys have to say! I'm itching for a new device!

If your TP is sluggish, are you running the rom that came with the phone?
Mine was, until I discovered the cooked 6.5 roms back in May. I've flashed mine dozens of times. The 2303x builds are LIGHTNING fast, and depending on who you get it from, 99% of them are rock stable.
Pop over to the rom section, read the "flashing guide for Newbies" and then check out some of the great roms. These guys put in a LOT of time making the WM software better, and NO CARRIER BLOATWARE.

Get an iPhone. Duh!
On a serious note, it depends on whether you want to stay on the Windows Mobile platform or not, and whether you still want a physical keyboard or not. If you don't mind giving all touch-screen a try, then consider getting the Touch Pro HD (HTC Blackstone). I've heard great things about it, and it looks absolutely lovely. Otherwise, the only real upgrade path that I can think of is getting the Touch Pro 2 or similar.
It's really hard to upgrade when you're pretty much at the upper limit for smartphones. The Raphael is one of HTC's fastest devices, so keep that in mind.
My friend went from a Sprint Touch Pro (CDMA) to an Iphone 3G S 32GB... and he is a computer science grad student and a tech nerd... and he is blown away by the iphone. Yes Iphone OS is not like WM in functionality, but what the OS lacks, the apps make up for it. The Iphone is very stable, doesn't overheat (his doesn't), and is incredibly snappy. Plus its got a great screen, a built in ipod, etc. Just no insurance! =X And Apple control...

First of all, allow me to clarify... I would 100% like to stay with a Windows Mobile phone, and second of all, I DEFINITELY need a slide out QWERTY keyboard.
And FYI.. I should have clarified... I am not a newbie! I have been hacking these phones and updating my ROMS for years now.
As I thought I mentioned, I have been flashing NATF's ROMS.
I started out with the CASIO BOSS in 1986, and as of late, I've had around six HTC phones, from the SX-66 to the 8125 to the 8525 to the FUZE, and so forth.
I don't know much about the iPhone 3GS, but I wrote a lengthy review of the 3G, and it just didn't suit my needs.
And like it or not, the FUZE is sluggish on my levels, even with the best ROMS. I don't think it's TERRIBLE, not at all, but let's face it... It's more like the feeling I get working off my modest Tablet PC on battery, than off my 4 monitored desktop's Quad Core Q9450 64Bit CPU, with 8 GB of RAM and 4TB on the hard drive.
There is just that little bit of 2008/2009 sluggishness that is making me a little eager and power hungry for a mind-blowing 2009/2010 device.
So, yeah, all this to say, I am not looking for an iPhone(!)
I am looking for a kick-ass Windows Mobile device that is the "next generation". The 8525 was an excellent jump from the 8125, which was an excellent jump from the SX66.
I am just looking for an equivalent jump, even if it's not made by HTC.
The FUZE/Touch Pro was THE must-have phone for all Hermes users.
I just needed a little guidance for the next one.

The TP2 has the best keyboard I've ever used on a phone. I've had the 8525, Tilt and Touch Pro (and a few others along the way). In fact, if I spend a few more days with it I may be faster with it than a desktop...it's really that good. As for performance, the AT&T version is excepted to come with 6.5 and 6.5 does run a lot better than 6.1 does in terms of speed but it's also a lot smoother overall and easier to use. It's probably 45 days off though if the rumors are right. The screen (a huge WVGA) feels a lot more sensitive. As far as speed, it is the same chipset and I've used both a Touch HD and a TP2 and it does feel faster but I think it's partially due to a mroe sensitive screen and people confuse that with the response time because the taps are easier to register. using TF3D you get your occasional hiccup. For my 2 cents I think when 6.5 comes out TF3D may not be as necessary but it's a personal preference. I hope TF3D 2.5 runs lighter since as a program it is pretty heavy in v2.1. All of this plays into 'speed'. In short though, the TP2 does feel like a pretty big upgrade over the TP(1). Again,t he screen size lets you see so much more that it simply puts it into another class. You can easily one hand emails with the onscreen keyboard and that works great for short responses but for large emails just open the keyboard and you feel like you have a minicomputer.
I've just purchased a TP2 to replace my TP1.
Same familiar WinMo, same massive repoistory of software, bigger screen, better keyboard. And it's not a piece of fruit

Acer m900 until the USA compatible Omnia Pro shows up. Everything on the Acer is snappier than the Touch Pro, and probably what the older Wizard was like. Glad to be off the candy toy-phone the HTC made the Touch Pro into. Couldn't even do handwriting, nor using the VGA proper on a screen of that tiny size and the Qualcomm lag...
Both (m900, OmniaPro) still half as fast as the iPhone 3GS, but waiting for the 3GS to gain either cheap unlocked, or Palm Pre to go GSM. Nokia is still in some ditch thinking crap cpus can get them far.
