Has anybody tried Gembird universal charger with Diamond ?

Is the current of 500 mA enough for Diamond ?

i think you will find the output current too low to actually charge the Diamond.
The official HTC Car Charger has 2A output, the one you are looking at is 500mA...

Not very funny when you find that the 500mA car charger you used for years with no problem on other phones, wont charge your Diamond, and you end up lost, with no GPS and no phone - just a dead battery in the middle of the bloody countryside at night.

500mAh will charge your phone, but under heavy use you may not get much of a charge. Your computer's usb ports will deliver up to 500mAh and will charge your phone.
I have two car chargers which output 1Ah. They work fine. I found one in the game accessories for the Nintendo DS.

Yes, you can use it. But the question is, "Should you use it?"
No, you should NOT use it. Current must be of a minimum value to work. Voltage must be a maximum to be safe.
Best not to chance burning out your phone unless you can test the charger output under load.

I have a 500mA car adapter and mains plug which use a USB lead and non of these will get the phone to charge.
These work perfect with lots of other phones.
I have not tested them to check if they are actually supplying 500mA current, but I see your point about a USB PC port supplying 500mA

How to charge with a higher current?

When using my Toch Diamond as a GPS which is connected to a car charger, the battery will run flat in a few hours. Is there a charger that will charge it with a higher current than 500mA? It is inconvenient for a long trip.
Wait ..... you are saying that your GPS app runs your battery down even while plugged in the car charger?

Are you using an original HTC charger?
Some of the generic after-market car chargers output a lower current than what the GPS is actually draining from the phone, so effectively, rather than just charging it, that charger is simply "extending" the time it takes to drain the phone battery.
I'm not near my HTC car charger at the moment, but if I remember correctly the HTC charger outputs 2A.. ie, 2000mA? (can someone correct me if I'm wrong?) And I have no flat battery problems while using TomTom... (The fone does get warm, but that 's another issue that's been discussed previously...........)

With an other ROM it can be fixed! Now I don't have this problem anymore. You can also connect 2 chargers parallel but you got to have the possibility in your car. Or you buy a universal USB car charger which can handle 1A. Just like home wall charger (No 2000mA ).

My car chager (with a mini USB output plug) is rated at 5V 2A. My suspicion is that the charge current is determined by the phone, not by the charger. The charger is simply a (constant voltage) 5V power supply. Even if the chager is capable of supplying 2A, the charging circuit in the phone is limiting it to a maximum of 500mA. If the phone is designed clever enough, it could allow a higher charging current though signaling via the two signal wires of the USB plug. Would anyone know if this is the case or not for Touch Diamond? If yes, what would be the signals for higher charge current?
Your idea about using two chargers sounds interesting. Would you be able to give us more details about how to charge one phone with two chargers? Or are you thinking of having two phone and two chargers? That is, after one phone battery gets flat, simply uses another phone.

I have got an O2 Ignito (diamond) I have done an 8 hour round trip using GPS and my battery has not drained... And i do have the original I am using the charger that came with my polaris. my batt always stays full when plugged in and gps is running maybe your charger is what is causing it to drain

Are all of Apple's OEM iPhone wall chargers (the white little square looking one's) rated at 1 amp? They're cheap on eBay and I like their small form factor and want to pick one up for my Captivate. Thx

On your phone, go to Settings->About Phone->Status->Battery Status. If it says "Charging (AC)", it is charging at the max amperage the charger can offer (up to 1A). If it says "Charging (USB)", it is only charging at 500mA, the max a PC USB can offer. I'm pretty sure for iPhone/iPod chargers, it will show later case on our phone because it is not wired according to Samsung's AC charging requirement. I knew this because I had a 3rd party Car charger that was designed for iPhone/iPod and it won't let my Captivate to charge in AC charger mode. I have to open the charger and make a few mod myself to let Captivate to recognize this is an AC charger, not PC USB.
On the other hand, my 1A charger from Kodak Zi8 flash cam works w/o problem with Captivate.

ty for the reply. I modded a usb retractable cable by shorting the middle connectors and when I go into settings it shows it's "Charging AC". This is with a generic 700mA usb wall charger I got with a cheap connector kit for my old iPhone.
Anyway, I recently got my Captivate and I find myself constantly playing with it, but it kills my battery doing so. I just want to charge my phone as quickly as possible so I can continue playing with it some more (in a good way).
I like Apple's wall charger because it's small.
From what I have read they are rated at 650 mv so fox is right that they will show as a usb connection. I have never really paid attention and am making a relatively uneducated, yet randomly tested, through my own purely subjective method of simply plugging my phone into anything that will allow my usb cord access, guess that anything with a female usb connection is fine.
Li-ion batteries are kinda dangerous so I am pretty sure there is some sort of idiot proofing built into the charging circuitry in the phone as well.
I'm pretty sure the Captivate will only draw the amps it needs so there should be no danger whether the wall charger is 1 or 2 Amps or more.
The difference is simply the charge time. The phone needs about 3 to 4 hours to get a full charge on the stock 700mA charger. When using generic USB chargers, it will be limited to 500mA max regardless what the charger is capable of and the full charge time will be proportionally longer. The bigger problem is that when your battery is really really low, 500mA may not be enough to even start the charging. That's why you need always keep the OEM charger handy for emergency.
BTW, for a car charger, 500mA won't keep your bettery from draining if you run navigation app that needs to power GPS chip, keep the screen on and download map from 3G connection at the same time. It requires 700mA or more. That is why it is very critical for a car charger be recognized by the phone as AC charger to draw more juice.
Ok, as I stated in my previous post I modded a USB cable by shorting the two middle data connectors, which tricks the Captivate into thinking it's charging with AC through my generic 700mA wall charger. It also says in settings it's "AC Charging" when I looked.
I just wanted to know if the iPhone's wall charger is rated at 1A or was it 650mA?? as newter55 stated.

For some new PC motherboard with USB3.0,
they can output 900mA~1000mA(1A) in one single USB port.

If your PC is already 2 years old or older, the usb will only output 500mA in the max.
And, most Li-ion charger are smart enough.
In fact Li-ion charger circuit need to be well design in current control and over current/charge control.
The circuit will not pump full current to the battery in the beginning,
and it will not draw too much, so no need to worry about burn it up.
However if the current is too high let's say 10A.... it may possibly burn the circuit.
Maybe it is a bit difficult to measure current, you need to cut the wire and plug it to ampmeter....
Here is some reference.
500mA - full charge need over 3hrs
700mA - around 2hrs
1A - ~1.5 hr

It is not about USB port side. The phone itself also detects and determines how much current it will draw. If it detects it is a PC USB, it will only draw 500mA max as Captivate is designed following USB 2.0 spec.
Ok, thanks for everyone's help. I was able to find out on my own after scouring the internet and talking to someone who has the Apple wall charger and it is indeed 1Amps. I believe all wall chargers that come with the iPhone 3g and all iPhone models after are 1Amps. Not sure about the original iPhone 2g.
Also, for curiosities sake, the iPad USB wall charger is 2Amps.

But USB2.0 doesn't means it is just 500mA.

You're missing the point. The charge port on the phone can draw more than 500mA but only if it detects it is connected to a AC charger. Like mentioned above, you have to short the data PINs on the USB port or cable to let the Captivate think it is connected to AC charger. For iPhone, the data pins need to be connected to certain specific voltages in order to let iPhone know it is connected to an Apple AC charger.
When the phone can not detect AC charger characteristics, it falls back to PC USB 2.0 spec which is 500mA max.
I use one to charge my Zune. Haven't had a problem.

I fully understand what you're saying.
In iphone3, it can only draw 700mA from USB,
IP4 can draw nearly 1A from "computer" USB.
While iphone are just USB2.0 !
GalaxyS can draw 1A in max.
But does it like iphone4 can draw 1A from PC USB ? I don't know.
Or just like IP3 can draw only 500~700mA ?
I don't have new m/b and ampmeter so can't testing on it.

[Q] HTC sensation charging with cigaretlighter on motorcycle

Hi
I'm having a problem with charging my HTC devices on my Honda Fireblade.
My motorcycle dealer added a cigaretlighter so I can charge the HTC while driving and using it as GPS.
The problem is that the Sensation (and even my Desire HD or HD2) won't charge although the indicator light on the charger is on. So I've tested the charger with other equiment and it works.
Does anyone knows what can be the problem? The battery of the Honda is 12V

What is the charger output?
It should have 5V and 1A or 2A. If voltage lower, it will not charge..

I use this charger also in the car and there it works.
I bought this charger when I was on a trip and it's original for nokia
He's right, your charger probably doesn't have enough output. I noticed that certain house chargers I already had were charging the phone extremely slow and others charged the phone quickly. That's when I noticed that the ones that charged the phone quickly were 5v and had at least 1A. The ones that were less were too low of an output to charge the phone properly. You're more than likely experiencing the same thing. I'm willing to bet if you check what the output is on the charger you're using you'll probably see it either isn't the right voltage or the amps are too low...or both.

The nokia charger is
input 12 V
output 5V - 550mA
So you guys are right....it still doesn't explain to me why the charger works in car and not on motorcycle. Maybe because the battery output in car is higher A?
I'm not into electrical stuff :-(

Bear in mind I'm just speculating with this but your car's cigarette lighter may be putting out more power than your motorcycle's (especially since it wasn't original). Also though it may have been charging in your car, that doesn't mean it was charging at the rate it should have been (it might have been barely charging). Sort of like what I was saying I had experienced when I used a lower output charger (the really slow charging).
Yeah that looks ok. I'd imagine that you be sufficient.
The charger I have is a Nokia DC-4. Bought from Nokia themselves as lots of shops sell copies. The copies don't seem to have the right electronics in them to power the more expensive (read: power hungry) phones. I have to have a converter on the end to go to micro-usb (also a Nokia part) but it means we can also use it for the wife's Nokia.
I'd make sure you went genuine part, or at least one that someone else says works.

It should be working. But better you try it first, borrow from a friend that have this charger and try it on your motobike. If still not working. My conclusion is that your motobike most probabily produce a low voltage or current than what it were suppose to.

I've received the charger. Did a test last night and test....failed. Still not charging.

alternative to the hp charging cable

I lost my wall charger that came with my HP touchpad. The round plug thingie is what I'm looking for. Searching on Amazon brings up a number of items, for example:

However, is there an alternative that works? I was able to use the Evo cable rather than the original HP sync/charge cable that came with the wall charger, but is there an alternative wall plug that works as well? Paying almost $28 for a charging cable seems a bit ridiculous.
Any help and advice would be most appreciated.

I found that Walmart was having a sale on the North American charger with the barrel wall connector for $11.99 and Meritline was having a sale for 6' long USB to micro-usb cables (pair for $4.99 no tax/shipping).
The listing on the Meritline page says that the cables are compatible with the Evo.
Given that the cable that comes with the HP barrel charger is pretty much monkey spit and fails within a month, I found a solution that works for less than $20.

Pretty much any USB charger will work, but most give a notification on the Touchpad screen indicating that they may not be charging. This is because the official charger is at the high end of both voltage and current capability. I charge from laptop, desktop and a variety of Blackberry chargers with no issue, but the available current will determine how long it takes to charge and whether it charges much while the screen is on. Go for a USB charger that gives you 2 Amps and you should be fine.

Any brand name USB charger that gives off 2 amps should be fine. I tend to stay away from really cheap generic chargers. Any microUSB cable should be fine even a generic one if it has decent reviews. I worry about generic chargers since a poorly regulated one could send a voltage too high, but generic cables should be fine.
The chargers I am currently using, as well as the one that came with the TP, are the one that came with a Blackberry Playbook and the one from my HTC Desire HD.
The Blackberry charger gives an error on the screen that it may not charge the TP, but as it gives 2 amps, charges in pretty much the same time as the official unit.
The HTC again gives the warning and takes about twice as long to charge.

I just tested the TP with a charger for the NC, and unfortunately, it still gives the same "may not charge" warning...
There is NO after market charger that will charge at full rate like the HP barrel charger!
At best they will trickle charge at a much lower rate and take considerably longer to charge.
The TP relies on precise signaling which it will only get from the OEM item or specially modded after market units or cables.
Do a google for further info ie webosnation.com forums.
I think your looking for a 5.1v charger, aka rapid charger. This is used by the iPad, and some android phones like the Motorola droid 3, razr and htc rezound.
I could be wrong though,I haven't gotten my touchpad yet.but I do own all said device above (except the razr) and they all use the faster charging technology.

Don't believe all the hype about using ONLY the HP charger, there are many that do the job perfectly well. Too many people make these authoritarian statements and all they do is cause FUD.
At my office, I use the AC charger from my last Samsung phone (mythic) and it works IDENTICALLY to the OEM one. I have also used a Moto and and LG with NO PROBLEMS. I have no issues getting to fully charged in little time.
At home, my OEM cable is plugged into a high-power USB port (2.1A, I believe) and it has no problem charging from near zero to full as well. Front or top-mounted USB ports tend to be 500mA or less, but the rear ones (coming directly off the motherboard) tend to have a higher supply. I also use a non-HP USB cable occasionally and it works fine.
(I got my TP during the original fire-sale and have been charging it these ways ever since with ZERO ISSUES.)

The small voltage difference is marginal and isn't going to matter, the internal hardware should be able to tolerate a few tenths of a volt difference. In fact, I tested my Motorola charger rated at 5.1v and the Touchpad charger rated at 5.2v on a multimeter. The Motorola charger was outputting 5.20v and the Touchpad charger 5.16v. Granted this is at no load, but switching transformers are regulated so they should supply rated voltage at any current draw equal to or less than rated. Also depending on how well the voltage is regulated there may still be a slight AC ripple that the device has to deal with.
Does anyone know the time difference between using the TP charger and a standard droid/blackberry charger? Also curious if the charges last the same. I know theoretically they should since the battery is full either way, but electricals can be tricksiy..

Its all down to the charge rate that the TP is able to draw.
2A which is theoretically possible from TP AC barrel charger would charge the 6A+ battery of the TP from flat to full in approximately 6.5 hours.
If the BB charger were able to have 500mA drawn by the TP then it would fully charge in approximately 26 hours.
The charges would be no different.
To convert any regular USB charger into a TouchPad charger you need to add 2 resistors as per the diagram attached.
The presence of the resistors will trigger the TouchPad to draw the full 2A from the charger rather than the trickle charge it does when they are not there.
Please do not modify a cheap charger that is only rated for 500mA as you will most likely overheat it and it could present a fire risk.

Just pointing out that you need to start with a charger that is rated at least 2Ah to start with.
You can't turn a low rated one into a high rated one.

oh, for the love of gods. REALLY? I was just asking for a replacement cable. I don't want to reinvent the charging paradigm. I just need a simple recommendation for a cable. If a thread could be highjacked any further I don't know how it could be.

well i know that my tbolt cable works. i have to use the tp adapter though. my tbolt adapter makes the touchpad say that the charger is incompatible.

[Q] Can HOX be charged by 2.1A car charger?

I am going to buy a car charger for my new HOX, but it only has one 2.1A usb output. I know the charging current of the HOX wall charger is 1A, but I think 2.1A should work fine or even charge faster. But my concern is if the larger current would hurt my battery or shorten its lifetime.
Some ppl said the phone itself would take 1A current anyway due to some kind of threshold control inside, but I am not sure about it. So pls let me know if you know the truth. Appreciate it!
ps. I sent an email about this problem to HTC customer care 2 days ago but still no response yet. I will post the official answer when I get their answer.
UPDATE: Here is the official response from HTC about charging current, it seems that HOX does not intelligently control its charging current:

Yep, it'll work fine. Chargers don't "push" the charge, the phone pulls it. If the phone is only designed to charge at 1000ma, then it will only pull that current. So you could use a 10 amp charger and it will be fine, only difference is that with that high a capacity, you'll be able to charge 10 phones at the full charging rate. Changing the voltage, that's a different story.

There is no problem of the voltage of the car charger because that is 5V as the oem charger, but do you know if HOX is designed to intelligently pull the proper amount of current? or will it take any current fed to it?

All Li-ion batteries have intelligent charging circuits. Otherwise, it will simply explode.
I won't worry about 2.1A at all. The problem is other way around, i.e. whether or not the phone will take more than 500ma from your 2.1A charger. It depends on how your charger is wired. If the phone only detects a generic USB connection, it will only charge max 500ma. It requires special wiring from the USB port to allow phone to switch to AC charging mode to draw more current. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell until you have the charger and try it out. One thing for sure, those chargers designed for iPhone/iPad typically won't be recorgnzied by other phones as AC chargers.

Gotcha, the car charger I am going to buy is for iphone, but it also claims to be able to charge phones of htc, sony etc. So I guess it is possible to have the ac charging detection.

My money is on that it won't be recognized as AC charger. iPhone has special requirement on data PIN wiring that is not compatible with other phone. Yes, you can charge other phones but probably not at anything over 500ma.
Pls see my updates, it seems that 2.1A charger is not safe.
