GPS issue and what we should do - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi all,
Regarding the lag from the GPS of the HTC diamond and Touch Pro, i called the HTC
custmer support service (French one) and here is what i said:
I tried the GPS with several navigation systems (i said tomtom but they directly
replied me that tomtom is not an official product so i had to say i tried also COPILOT 7
diamond edition) and when i drive i have a 50 meters lag! Even worse, if i use my
old P3600 device it reacts faster, almost instantaneously, while it takes 25 to 30
meters for the diamond to realize i moved."
I also explained them that i made a throughful comparison between the two devices (
P3600 and Diamond) using "HTC GPS TOOLS" and that after two steps the P3600 detects a
movement while it still requires 25 steps until the Diamond or Touch Pro react.
And their answser was he following:
"So far only two people have notified us about the problem, it would require significantly
more people complanining before a HOTFIX patch is released"
So as the support service said, as long as there is enough people notifing them about
the issue we would see a hotfix release. Now it's up to us to take some minutes of our
time and to call them.

Ipaq 6915 and GPS usage....???

Hello
I will shortly be the lucky (I hope if the purchase goes ok) owner of a Ipaq 6915 and wanted to know if anyone has got any experience at all with running TomTom on this unit...?
I have found the software that I want to buy....
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=48M0&fb=22&InMerch=1
...but I am struggling to know if it will work on my device. I am reading of problems with maps not found or TomTom only supporting devices that are on their list of approved devices, I'm not sure if that is right....?
Reading the link above I can't see the 6915 listed and would appreciate any help on whether I should buy from them and am I right in assuming that there are no demo of this software to test compatibility...???
I have mailed TomTom support from my account but still have not got a reply.
Sorry if the above is a really obvious question but I am rather new at this.
Actually the 6915 should come with a built in version of TomTom (the model I've seen had it, but this may very depending on region) specialized for it. It also has a map downloading app, but you will need to pay for an account.
I suggest you wait until you receive the device before considering purchasing additional navigation software.
<hangs head in embarrassment> - thanks for your help, it shows how new I am to thing. I understood it had a built in GPS but I didn't know a version of TT come built in, it seems to get better..!!!!
When you write about it needing an account would that be to register for the map in the area that I live...?
No need to be embarrassed.
GPS PDA / phones don't usually come with a built in navigation software. HP did good on this one.
I am not sure how it works exactly. I just saw that the app can download one free map as an example, some small area I think.
I know you need to pay if you want to download additional maps, but I have no idea how the registration process works.
I only had the device to play with for a few days, so I didn't get very far with it (Not to spoil your joy of the new toy but I really didn't like the square screen).
Thanks for your help, again. I will now wait to conclude the purchase of the device (the seller is waiting for his latest gadget before letting me buy the 6915)
I have spent so long trawling through forums and posts to find out as much as I can (obviously it didn't do me much good) on whether TomTom is approved on the device and will work. And then what I need to buy.
Good job they didn't have TT in stock at the above supplier as I would have bought it ready, now that would have been an embarrassment....!!!!
Thankyou again for your help and maybe its just me but my navigation skills around TomTom's website on finding more information is poor, I suppose that is why I need the GPS function....!!!!
Here is hoping that I only need to have ONE device and not a pocket full of the things, including several chargers and leads...!!!!!!
Well, I have been using this ipaq with TT version 6 and without any problems. The original ipaq did come with a TomTom pre-installed with a map of a small area. Well, I ended up installing another copy of TT6 - had no problems at all. A very good PDA - used to use xda2i earlier, but now do not need to carry any gps receiver as it is built in.
Thanks for the feedback spahwa - with it having the built in GPS, and other features, that is why I am interested in it. This means I will hopefully only have one device to carry around etc etc etc.
Glad to see that TT6 can be installed if required.
ttn6 is a great app... the 6515 however uses agps, so be warned. it requires the download of lto dat files every 3 days or else the gps wont function there are alternative 10 day lto files out there...
i was unhappy with the performance, or more accurately, the way the agps system works on my 6515 and more recently my 6945... ttn6 installed fine to both devices. i currently run ttn6 on my h5555 ipaq with a navman sleeve. i also like iguidance for either device.
just wanted to give you a heads up about the agps, cause i didnt know anything about it untill ofter the fact. there are devices out ther with different chipsets and quicker satelite recognition, so shop around a bit if you can

mmm... You certainly have given me something to think about that I wasn't aware of that could real implications on the practical use of the device.
Thanks VERY much for your post.
i should add that my primary device is an hw6945 and im very happy with it. although i dont use it as my primary gps device, its a very well rounded device. the only short-comming is the 240x240 screen which for some is a huge limitation (for me its not too bad as i have other devices which fill the void)... again, i would read into some alternatives before you dive into something. there are many devies and many new devices that are coming out with gps now
jd
edit: i would google "6515 tt6" and like searches to get a feel of some of the issues people have been dealing with regarding tomtom, and the agps unit on this device in general

that's not true. the GPS will still function w/o the lto files, although the ttff may be affecte as a result. There's a tweak (let me know if you don't have) to download the 10 day lto files, but otherwise, I don't really think this is a showstopper. The performance of the agps is defnitely on par with a sirf3 chip in a mobile device.

I am happy with the performance, no problem with the fix or what soever.
"There's a tweak (let me know if you don't have) to download the 10 day lto files"
... idont have please enlighten me is this based on either device or limited to the 6515, as im using a 6945 at this point...
thanks,

srry, doublepost
hey i also own a hw6945 and i was wondering if you have anywhere specifically where i can get programs for this screen size? im particually looking for an aim program that fits this screen sizze....thx
On my HW6915 there is no single problem running TT5. TT6 also runs great, however TT5 runs smoother.
Although AGPS is builtin, there's no need to use this software. Without updates the builtin GPS normally gets a fix within a minute.
i bought the hp 6915 at christmas and its the first pda ive had, i installed tt 6 on it and it works fine for me,
as far as the tomtom they give you on the hp 6915 is the vertion 4.0
you can the download for free a map of your town but you will have to buy any other maps or download them on bit torrent (grin)
if you do that there is a small mod to do in the windows system if tomtom can't find the gps radio
change the "IsEnabled de 1 to 0." in the \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\section using a system editer like resco
What is true though is the screen size is too small. The next pda i buy will definatly have a bigger screen but the hp is certainly a pda swiss army knife
thats my opinion anyway
larry
6915 manual said that the 4 files for the gps can be downloaded through activesink but i use free wifi spots to download them every few days.
the main advantage about agps is that it get's fix much faster

HTC Touch Pro Issues (updated 23.11)

Hello,
I am a HTC Tornado user and I had in plan to buy TP.. but because of the TP's bugs I'll wait a while.. I really don't understand why HTC don't do more tests before release it?! Many of their issues are corrected by xda-dev community.
I want to gather all the issues in one topic, one post. This post will be edited as new issues/bugs are found. This will be useful for potential buyers - they should know that TP is not perfect. Ok, I will bypass the lack of the softkeys and the camera dedicated button. (you may ask, what's the sense to have softkeys if you can touch the buttons with your finger/stylus... but I will ask you back: what you will do if the application is in fullscreen mode? )
I know there's a topic for Raphel issues but It's hard to follow all the pages.. so here it's an summary. As I said, I want to update the list as more known issues are found. You can contribute with issues so I can update the post (post the way I posted so it will be easy to me to copy /paste..).
We should send this list to htc, maybe they will try to fix these bugs (many of them are software related)
The post will be slitted into two parts. Active problems and solved one.
This is not a complete list
I. CONSTRUCTION ISSUES
D-PAD design: Unresponsive buttons: every now and then the "right" button of the D-Pad does nothing, then suddenly it will start working again, same with the "Back" button though much more infrequent/noticable than the D-Pad issue I've experienced. HINT! -> HERE, or video here
Touch Pro wobbly keyboard issue
II. GENERAL MAJOR ISSUES
Poor GPS (chipset or software implementation?): ~50m+ lag, overheating gps, loose signal
Landscape redraw issue. Videos and more info HERE
poor directdraw, framebuffer/video performance. Just to make an idea: an old device from 2005 with omap 850 200mhz CPU performs better in this area than the touch pro @ qualcomm 528mhz. what a shame. The test were done in this topic (in romanian, sorry). CorePlayer was used for benchmark. I will summarize.
- HTC Tornado overclocked (262Mhz) max performance: 174.22%
- Touch Pro max performance: 172,67%
Both in Raw framebuffer mode. When used QTV it gains only 162,64%. How come?
It's pitty, 262Mhz from OMAP performs better than 528!!!Mhz from Qualcomm?!
The video used for tests is this one. (320x240 @ 25FPS)
Bugs with key mappings (on qwerty keyboard). This means you cannot use the qwerty for playing your favorite emulated & ported games (eg: DOS emulator, Picodrive, SNES, Doom 1, etc etc). WORK-AROUND: here
There's a damn 'break' (for <=1/2sec) at a (random) interval while listeing to music! This issue is also present in Diamond. More info HERE
low speaker/buzzer volume (lower than previous htc phones) WORK-AROUND: here
III. GENERAL MINOR ISSUES
Touch Flo 3D has slowdowns times
FM radio reception is not the best
Camera bug. More details here. Quote: "Camera application is buggy! Slow zoom, touch and focus works only after a dumb picture, after some focuses the auto focus stops to work. I tested it with 3 phones." (nickba)
TouchFlo3D calendar issue
IV. ISOLATED ISSUES (eg: doesn't happen to all, may be software or hardware related, not sure)
Random shutdowns during night or unresponsive device after overnight / long charge
Microphone has delay when answering calls (this seems to be network dependent - orange users seems to have this problem)
Some users claims that TP has bad reception
Broken Screen Issue
Device is hanging with horizontal grey stripes over the screen
V. HARDWARE ISSUES (eg: device/mainboard must be replaced)
Sometimes, when answering a call the phone "mute" itself. So, you wouldn't hear the caller voice. You have to soft reset the device.
Tips
It takes a while to find satellites position (take a fix). One solution is to use the Quick GPS app, but you need an active data connection.
Task Manager / TF3D terminates every running application. (Tip by vicott):
-- Use Advanced Configuration Tool
-- change "File system cache" la 8MB.
-- change "file system filter cache" la 131072.
-- change "Glyph cache" la 32KB.
-- Try to change HKCU > Software > HTC > Task Manager > EnableAutoKill = 0
You may check also "Raphael Tweaks" topic.
Other tweaking tools: Advanced Config Tool, Diamond Config.
Data was collected from different forums / threads. Big thanks to all the contributors.
Finally, too bad that dreams aren't true. TP does not deserve it's price. Don't get me wrong.. it has some really nice features but those bugs takes the device donw!
I really miss the old HTC..
-----
ISOLATED/DO NOT COUNT:
[*]LED under the "send" key does not work anymore
No offense, but if your going to jump the gun and be an early adopter with a brand new model in the tech realm, you need to expect some growing pains.
Also, most of those problems seem to be independent, and not all showing up on the same device, or many in general for that matter.
I applaud your effort in bringing all these issues to light with HTC, but you should take a more professional approach, because if you throw in a bunch of whining about price etc, your only going to hurt your cause.
Just my .02 cents.
I must agree the handset is over priced. Equal pda only devices are less than a third the price.
And with all the bugs its actually a real shame tbh.
I've already chose not to pay for the full cost of the phone ill get a contract with o2 when it comes out there [supposedly next month.]
And ill just deal with the bugs as they come....
Oh if this helps anyone The over night charge and then unresponsive bug. I dont think this is down to this phone alone. I had the exact same problem with my dell pda under winmob 6 [football]. Im guessing its a windows related bug.
Concerning the active point number 6 (Sometimes, when answering a call the phone "mute" itself), it is true it is quite annoying, but in the whole forum we are just 4 persons to have this problem, which is an acceptable margin.
Let's see how HTC deals with it. If they manage to repair it for good or change the device I'll be very happy and HTC will have proven they are more responsible than apple (with the Iphone 3G that has a lot of problems of reception under the 3G network)...

Theutus you are right. I am just upset because the problems of the latest devices from htc (pre-htc diamond&pro: video lag, etc).
You know the sensation... you want something so much and in final you found out that is not as you expected.. Anyway, post re-edited.
Thanks
@NutsyUK i leave my WM phone many times on charging over night and no problem. (though it's Standard version of WM)
@Flippy_TK that may be a random thing. Other persons maybe just happens not to occur that bug.. as it is random (again). Or your TC may be from a faulty series?

I understand your frustration 100%, and I hope my post didn't come off as insulting in any way. I only meant that if your going to present a case to HTC for these issues, it should be in more of a "professional" layout.
If you need to blow off some steam on the forums, then by all means let her rip. I do think a majority of these issues will be resolved once the phone is released wordlwide, and more people can get their hands on them. After all, thats what xda does best.
RE
Yah! Add to that the contacts cannot be saved to the SIM card
@Theutus that's ok. The problem is WHY the community has to resolve their problems and not HTC?! Why we don't have a fully functional device right from the box?!
@FOSA thanks. I wait at least one more confirmation to be sure it's touch pro related and not one device related (due some personal actions or 3rd-party software).
I've visited the diamond section from this forum. I've seen many topics with issues.
WE MUST TAKE ACTION if htc does not care... What to do? Don't know.. spread the "bad news" world worldwide, start a petition listing all the problems.. etc.
It's really a shame, a time has passed since they've released Diamond and Touch Pro and htc does not care about the issues (history repeat, see http://www.htcclassaction.org ). They are busy releasing new devices (and I bet that those will be buggy too )

I must be honest. This is my third HTC phone (after an S200 and a P3600) and it's the first time I can run a plain HTC stock ROM with almost no problems. I have had the phone for four weeks now and I am happy with it.
I agree that HTC can be very frustrating with their attitude of basically never fixing problems but in my opinion the out-of-the-box quality of the TouchPro is better than with their previous phones.
I'm with you. I've been happy with the out of the box rom and so far don't have any desire to change - well till we figure out if we can/can't get 3G on it.
So far week 2 out of the box is fine.
Minor issues have been fixed include
Screen lock when phone rings. This is a bad design by HTC
I seem to have an issue with MMS sending but I think thats my provider not sending the config codes correctly. The settings are there but if I try to send a message I get cant dial error. Lucky I don't send MMS that often. I am going to wait for my provider to support the phone before I make a big deal out of it
Great thread!!
I'll add my issues (plenty of them!!) when I have the time.
Thanks
One thing I probably expect is every ppc phone arrive with a bunch of problems, but most normal users do not encounter them at all.
A friend of mine had used the touch pro for the last two weeks, with the basic htc rom, no customisations at all, no tweaks and she's perfectly happy with it. She goes oh and ah at every little thing. She uses it to check her email, surf websites, log onto messenger and that's all. Before that, she was using a diamond and she felt it was a great phone.
People like us will feel the "lag" when we use touch flo. Normal users like her will not even care about it. They just wait for a while. If it does not work, reset the phone. As long as it can call, sms and do what they want reasonably, it does not really bother them.
For ppc geeks like us, we will just find fault and improved it. Remember threaded sms, it was wanted so badly last time, and now that it is in, people wants to go back to the normal sms.

True... one man's enhancement is another man's bug.
I've been using the TP for a month now. I'd say the hardware is great (except the front keypad, which is a little tacky). WM6.1 is also great (as mobile phone operating systems go). The HTC add-on software is buggy, but most of it is for funking-up the UI, and I can live without it. I'm sure it will get fixed. I have TF3D switched off, and it's pretty stable now.
I can easily "I wish it had X, like my Prophet", but then I still have the Prophet and I'm not going back to it. Or "I wish it did X, like my Nokia", but then my Nokia reboots consistently in the MP3 player and, if I switch time-zones to Central Europe and back, some birthdays in the calendar end up on the wrong day!
Any product like the TP is rushed out, as a commercial necessity. Think of how much money Sony Ericsson have lost from late delivery of the X1, as would-be X1 buyers (like me) have bought TPs instead. And I suspect that anyone expecting distinctly better quality from SE will be disappointed.
The TP isn't perfect, and it is not (yet) as good as it should be. But it is pretty good, even compared to devices from other manufacturers (Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc.).
If you're waiting for a more solid device, I suggest you don't wait for another rushed device; wait for a better TP. Or, get a TP now, disable TF3D, and add some freeware to add the functionality you want - that's the beauty of WM. You'll probably still have a better device than you have now.
Cheers,
Graham.

It's not just the touchflo 3d... Really! Read the first post and take a deep look on the Raphael forum. You'll find many topics with TP issues and lots of frustrates.
GPS issues (lag, signal loss, overheat), music issues (tss™ htc effect), wrong keymap, low volume, etc etc!
I really want htc to take action and resolve the issues.
@illi thanks
I've got the thing, I know the issues. I also know how big a deal they are (which is bigger to some people than others), and how many of the issues can be worked around. I listen to MP3s, I use the GPS, I send and read email, and once in a while I even make a phone call! And I do all these things without trouble.
No argument from me... the bugs need fixing. But this device, I promise you, is not unusually buggy. It does have an unusually large number of features, and that will mean more bugs in total.
People are writing their hates on this forum; no one writes about what they like, love, or about niggles they can live with. If prospective buyers are reading this, I think it might be useful to have some balance.
i missed the OK bottun on the Keyboard !
why they put it out !???
My problems:
- of Right D pad not working sometime
- Time to get a fix 10x time to get a fix with my diamond
- No ringtone or vibrate when receive a private call
I Want This Feature Back
You could delete all mail (read/unread) with a single key in the Tornado. Whereas there is none in the TP; YOU HAVE TO DELETE ONE BY ONE... Imagine having 100s of emails that you want to delete. HOW MANY KEY STROKES to accomplish that?? I now have 100s of read emails that I want to delete. IMAGINE!!!
1. NEVER once were links from emails were successfully opened in Opera.
2. Is MSXML2 parser installed on TP? If not where to get it?

[TUT] VDA GPS aka Toshiba G710

Hi,
This device, the VDA GPS, can be purchased new for around 100 Euro at the German eBay.
It will be without any SIM-Lock.
I have bought one, to add to my collection, but I am still waiting for it.
Anyway, I like to stay ahead of things and already I am searching for information.
1. Customisation
How bad is the Vodafone customisation? I read missleading statements on different forums, i.e. the whole menu-structure being different than what Windows Mobile normally offers.
Can that be surpressed by a Soft-Reset after an Hard-Reset?
Can one remove customisation afterwards?
2. GPS
Seems that some claim it runs TomTom, Route66, Google Maps, ..., while others seem to have problem detecting the GPS device at all.
3. Firmware
I have not found any firmware update for this device, not even WM6. Because older posts reference this device with WM5, I assumed that there must be an upgrade to WM6 somewhere...
This would be interesting to revert from a Germanized and customized VDA GPS ROM to a standard G710 ROM.
4. Hack
Question to the Pro's: is the installer to bypass the CountryID-check for i.e. the Universal compatible with this device, if one changes the firmware files in the folder?
Any knowledge on other hacks for this device?
Hopefully, one can get something usefull of this "el cheapo" device. Yes I know, the battery does provide that much of an autonomy, it has only 2.5G and no WLAN. But hey - what do you expect from a 100 Euro phone? Normally you do not expect: WM6, 320x200 screen, full keyboard, GPS...
Thanks,
vma
Found some stuff (and still waiting for the device to arrive):
- SDHC support: search for SDHV_V2.RAR or SDHC.777.CAB. This seems to allow the use of any SDHC card on the G710/VDA GPS
- GPS: use COM3: with 9600 baud. Seems that Garmin XT Mobile, Route 66 v7 or v8 do work. There is a guy seeling a bundle of the VDA GPS and TomTom 5, so I guess it will be v5.20. Others complain that neither TomTom 5,6 or 7 works. needs to be confirmed. Google Maps seems to work for some.
- Reset / Hardreset: there is no button for that. Reset by taking out battery, Hardreset by accesing menu item in settings... Not a good choice in my opinion.
Cheers,
vma
Phone arrived like new.
Here the first things:
- GPS works with COM3 / 9600 baud
- Google Maps works
- TomTom 5.20 crashes the phone
- Route 66 (older release) does not work properly
- Vodafone Navigator works
- English can be selected (requires reboot, other supported languages: German, French and Turkish)
Overall I liked the first impression.
Not bad for 100 Euro.
I'll keep you updated - but some feedback would be appreciated!
Cheers,
vma
Update:
- Route 66 v7 works great
- TomTom v5.2 will not work: black screen, one has to reboot phone
- TomTom v6.x and v7works but requires touch screen, so one can't insert address
I'm still happy with the device and yes, it is a bargain. I see not real advantages over Q7 or other phones with the same form factor which cost 2x-4x more money and often don't have built in GPS.
The phone is manufactured by a chinese company called AMOI (http://www.amoi.com). It is model 6711.
Cheers,
vma

Thanks for posting this info, makes interesting reading, as I'm actually looking for a dirt cheap, qwertybar, GPS enabled WM standard device.
How bad is the Vodafone branding?
Was it SIM locked?
Is it as sluggish as the reviews suggest?
How is the battery life & phone reception?
Do any of the vendors on ebay.de ship to the UK?
"How bad is the Vodafone branding?"
It says vodafone on the phone under the screen, so you cannot remove it. It does not annoy me, though I am using a different operator. I compared it with a real life Toshiba version and it looks as good (the colours of the keys are different on the Toshiba version and it says Toshiba instead of Vodafone).
On the software side, it will boot after a hardreset into German language and with the Vodafone skin. You can revert to the default WM6 skin and choose the language between English, German, French and Turkish.
The annoying customization is with some few icons, which have been replaced by Vodafone ones, like the Explorer icon. Nothing dramatic, but a little weird. That is supposed to make life easier for existing customers, who are already used to those icons... What a stupid idea, I say, in case the decision makers are reading this.
"Was it SIM locked?"
No. It did not have any lock what so ever.
I wonder if those phones where distributed by Vodafone unlocked and I actually tend to believe that, because:
1) I have found no reference what so ever about unlocking this phone.
2) There are so many of them being sold, all of them unlocked, even the ones being sold by private sellers, whom I cannot imagine to have found an unlocker that I did not find.
Anyway, to make sure, search for the words "ohne SIM-Lock".
"Is it as sluggish as the reviews suggest?"
It is the fanciest phone I own now and I have Nokia nGage, Nokia Communicator 9210i, Qtek 9090, 2x Universal, HP iPaq 514...
Even my wife liked it (must be the first time) and the finishing of it is quite good. It looks much more expensive than it actually is.
The bad side of it: the screen is always with grease spots from fingers or the ear, much like the iPhone...
Regarding the software, I have not many complaints. I dont think it is sluggish. It runs Route 66 acceptably well and TCPMP runs the same episodes properly, which I already watched on my Universal.
So overall, I have no issues with speed, BUT I do not intend to run software on it like I do on my Universal. Of course there is a difference between 260MHz and 520MHz... The Universal has twice the speed!
But the phone does not feel more sluggish than the other smartphones I have. Beware this is a subjective opinion...
"How is the battery life & phone reception?"
Battery life is OK for me, as I let my phone charge over night. I simply cannot risk going out in the morning with battery at 50%, as I might have a bad day with lots of customers calling.
Still, I think the battery is pretty good. It has 1100Ah. And it seems to charge very fast. I imagine the battery should manage two days of normal use.
"Do any of the vendors on ebay.de ship to the UK?"
I live in Portugal and still got mine... Yes most will ship within Europe, but you should clarify this BEFORE.
However, bear in mind that you may have increased costs regarding money transfer. Within EU, all countries using the Euro can make transfers at low charges (i.e. I pay 1 Euro). I don't know how expensive it will be from the UK.
"I'm actually looking for a dirt cheap, qwertybar, GPS enabled WM standard device"
Well, I was looking for a cheap GPS enabled WM mobile phone, that would allow for easy chatting and mailing.
My HP iPaq 514 is a great device and was very cheap (new in a shop with 2 years warranty 129 Euro... no GPS but with WLAN). I have an external Bluetooth GPS device, but it was the lack of a keyboard that I did not like. Being always online, thanks to a flat rate, is inviting me to write text. Forget T9 for that... Plus, I don't care for WLAN anymore.
The Universal is of course the best phone and can be bought at good prices on eBay, but not always do I want to walk around with a brick.
So this phone does:
- look pretty good
- is slim and small
- has built in GPS
- has a usable keyboard
- is cheap
Problems:
- no WLAN (don't need it anyway thanks to the flatrate)
- QWERTZ keyboard (not QWERTY!!!): basically the Y and the Z keys are exchanged, one gets used to it pretty fast
- not the fastest CPU, but that does not matter much, because:
- WM6 Smartphone Edition has no touch screen functionality (logical) and because of that, won't run most programs designed for WM6
- many programs for WM6 Smartphone Edition have been designed for mobiles with the smaller screen resultions (276x200 (not sure if that is right) instead of 320x200) and won't run, either
So the last two points mean you won't have that many programs and games. Still I found all I need.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
vma
I got a G710 from my job and I found that the GPS was a little difficult to work. But I also found a small utility from Microsoft that helped a lot: "GPSID Settings".
This tool is easyly found on any freeware site, so I think it won't be a problem if i join it here, and allows to fine-tune on which port the GPS will be found.
Hope it helps.

Best thanks, but which parameters are right for gps?
program port: ? (com3)
hardware port: ? (com3)
hardware baud rate: 9600
Thanks for answer
I have been using this device almost every day and I love it.
It is an excellent purchase for the money!
Regarding GPS: I have Route66 and Google Maps running without issues.
Just assign COM3 and 9600 Baud. No tools are needed. These tools are for devices where GPS has to be turned on first. No need to use it on this phone.
Beware that getting a link can take up to 5 minutes! And I am speaking of real 5 minutes... Plus you need a good sight to the sky. For your first trials, just turn on Google Maps activate the GPS, set it to COM3 and 9600 baud and leave the device outside for a few minutes (take care it is not stolen).
Cheers,
vma

Google Maps runs, but it is not so good for navigation.
Which version do you use for Route66? I can't find a version for windows mobile, only versions for Symbian.
Can you send me your version number or a link?
Many Thanks
I learned that some of you have updated to WM 6.1 already.
From where to get the firmware update? Any link or download file is appreciated...
I have never seen any WM6.1 upgrade for this device.
And by the way: it is not polite to ask the same question in all threads...
Cheers,
vma
Toshiba are notorious for not supplying firmware upgrades. They buy cheap crap from cheap ODMs like Techfaith and Amoi and support is non existant. Ask anyone who has a G900 or G910.
Sorry, for having posted in several threads. I should learn the board structure first
Somewhere in the VDA GPS threads I saw a vodafone accouncement, which read like there will be an update to WM 6.1 via vodafone available soon.
Also, there is somebody who claimed having the update already on the device. That's the reason for all my questions. If there really exist an update to WM 6.1, I would like to try it out, as well.
Regarding the simlock: yes it can be simlocked, at last the G710 version. The one I got is simlocked to Orange and refuses any other sims.
Well, if anybody knows how to make it free...

It only can bee unlocked by the operator by payment of an unlocking fee or by a firmware update with unlocked firmware, which currently is nonexistent but planned by vodafone for instance. The vodafone ROM is unlocked.

In France the law makes mandatory for an operator to unlock a phone for free after 6 mounth of ownership. But I'm not that patient.
Too bad, seems I have to be patient...

I have tried with Google Maps and Windows Live but none seem to be not working.
Do you have GPSID.dll in Windows? I guess it is MS driver for GPS.
I love this phone, but this missing GPS is driving me crazy

The Phone's GPS is handled by the OS, as far as I learned. It should work instantly when an application requests positioning.
In Google Maps you should enable the GPS feature first and do proper setting of port and speed manually. This is COM PORT 3 @ 9600 baud.
It works after a few seconds under goog conditions...
Hi,
Thanks for your response.
I have done the required settings
COM3 & 9600 baud but google maps says "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)..." and nothing happens :-(
I understand that GPS requires GPSID.dll in the windows directory which is missing in my device. if you have the dll in your windows directory then that means this is the culprit.
If you have it can you please send it to me.
Thanks in advance

Questions about HTC Cruise

I recently switched from using the ATT Tilt to the Cruise (mainly because it's smaller/lighter to carry around) It's mainly working ok, but I have a few questions:
1) Does anyone know of a decent handwriting recognition software out there I could use? On the TILT i got used to the "block-recognizer," as the lesser of evils, but i would LOVE to find software that can use the whole screen. I use these devices a lot, so after a while that lower left corner becomes all scratched up (even using a screen protector) , and then you have to pay about $200 for a new screen, since the characters no long respond well to Block Recognizer. I"ve tried the "Transcriber" that comes with Windows Mobile 6, and it seems awful, as do the several other programs i found online, such as Pen Writer and Caligrapher, i think they're called? Back when i used Palm/Treo devices, i really loved the Teal Script program, but it doesn't seem to work for W Mobile? Anyone know of anything that could work??
2) Some things worked better on the Tilt, i guess becuase of the ATT software? For example, on Tilt you can use the word completion software in the Calendar mode, but on the Cruise it doesn't come up. And the word completion software "remembers" two-word or longer phrases in the ATT Tilt software, but not in the Cruise. Is there any work-around to be able to do this on the Cruise too??
3) Is it worth trying to upgrade to 6.1 on the Cruise, through some kind of cooked ROM, or better to wait until HTC finally (hopefully) releases the 6.1 ware??
Thanks much!!
Daniel
1. sounds like transcriber

Sorry, but Transcriber is already on the device, and it seem terrible to use?!! Isn't there ANYTHING out there that works ok??
Thx much!

HTC Helpdesk and GPS Issues

After a weekend in an unfamiliar city trying to navigate using my Touch Pro and CoPilot Live for HTC Diamond edition, and with the device failing to update the route or updating the route 30 seconds after passing a junction rendering it completely unusable I decided to go the official HTC route.
Monday was an email from the HTC site.
I had two responses, one telling me that my English email query was in a foreign language and technical queries could only be submitted in English . . .
The second providing me with a link to the HTC Contact numbers page from their website telling me to call in as the problem requires further diagnoses.
Without boring you with a very long story and 3 days making various phone calls to HTC, the outcome is pretty much as follows;
- There are no known issues with the Touch Pro GPS within the HTC Wiki, FAQ or Knowledgebase tool used by the Helpdesk.
- I had 3 different suggestions on setting up the GPS manually - using different COM ports and baud rates.
- I was told that CoPilot Live for HTC Diamond won't work on a Touch Pro
- I was advised to setup the GPS using Tom Tom 7, and then use the satnav software of my choice.
- I could if I wanted to, update the ROM with an official HTC ROM update released recently for Dutch Voda and T-Mob customers. This apparently fixes poor signal on the radio of these devices but does not impact the GPS functionality.
So the upshot is, I appear to be stuck ! I cannot purchase an official copy of TT7 as my device wasn't shipped with the TT7 "trial version". I have already tried using a TT7 cab file from this forum but it would not allow me to connect to TT Home and download offically purchased version 7 maps (I got a refund from TT), so I purchased CoPilot Live for HTC Diamond.
It has worked once successfully two months ago, but I have experienced issues ever since. No additional software or changes have been made on the device during this time.
Not quite sure what to do next really. . . . .
