ActiveSync pass-through Internet not working - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi all,
My unbranded Touch Pro is not having any success with using my PC's Internet connection, via ActiveSync pass-through.
This is the case be it with my home laptop running Vista, or my Windows PC running Windows XP, which I've upgraded to run the latest ActiveSync.
When it connects, it seems to allocate the mobile an IP address, but the phone will not use it. It will just try anything else instead, such as GPRS.
The phone's Internet access via 3G, Wifi etc is just fine.
My old phone (HTC Hermes) still works just fine with both PCs in this regard.
So clearly I need to tweak something on the Pro to get this to work! Any ideas?
Thanks!

I know this is a very old post but I have the same problem, my phone connects, syncs etc.. BUT, if I try to update weather or update FB, it contacts, it still needs to connect to 3G (not event wifi)
Using NRGs rom on mu sig.

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but try this:
Go to (on your phone) Start -> Settings -> System -> USB Settings
and make sure "Enable faster data sync..." is checked.
Disconnect and reconnect your phone to USB.
If that doesn't work, open ActiveSync on your computer and go to File -> Connection settings and enable "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to desktop".
That should disable 3G while your phone is connected to your pc.
Besides BOTH of those, if it still doesn't work, check (on your computer) Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.
Make sure there is an entry in there that says "Windows Mobile-based Device" as the grey subtitle under one of the "Local Area Connection" entries or anything else.
If the device STILL isn't working, the last thing to do is check your firewall.
If you have plain 'ol windows firewall, make sure that it's not enabled on the "Windows Mobile-based Device" connection. I know that usually is the most overlooked problem I've had.
Hope that helps you, I've had this happen to me a few times after flashing ROMs. Only thing is I don't have a data plan, so it sure was a costly mistake.

Check your firewall, I know that was an issue I had recently with my phone. I had just installed ZoneAlarm and it decided to block everything going in AND out of my computer on all interfaces.
If it's not your firewall, then try turning off "Allow USB connections" in the ActiveSync connection config, reboot, then turn it back on. That should do the trick.

Thank you for the answers but I found the problem.Somehow the device driver was disabled in the Windows Device Manager.I just enabled it and it ran

Excellent! Good to hear you got it working

Go to Settings-Connections-Connections on your device then Advanced followed by Select Networks.
Theres two drop down boxes, the device will try to connect to the internet via the network selected in the first drop down box, if that fails then it'll go through the network in the second drop down box.
Try setting both of them to "My Work Network" which has no settings and see if that will allow you to connect to the internet from your computer via activesync.

I set mine to "Network," and then in the Proxy Settings Tab, I checked "This network connects to the Internet." This finally worked for me.

Internet Sharing. How to use it?

Hi to all.
In the new roms from WM 6. Have and application called "Internet sharing"
I want to use the USB cable (not bluetooth) to connect mi laptop to internet trought my universal 3G.
How i use it?
I activate the connection. Mark the USB and my 3G definition. Connect. It's connecto 3G. And in the laptop i cant navigate.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks.
You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!
First, connect the PDA to the net by selecting usb connection and your default 3g connection, push connect and then connect the PDA to the laptop and it will be seen as some modem or something else.
You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!
Thanks.
But dont wotk for me.
The laptop detect the connection sharing. But the laptop don't navigate on internet.
The Pda navigate Ok.
am having the same problems too. ive followed above posted instructions but no dice.
in my case, the connect button is grayed out.
think i may have to configure either VPN, or ADD MODEM CONNECTION or SETUP PROXY SERVER. either way i dont have any idea how.
ROM: black shadow 4

Hi,
I can describe, how I am using this feature in Vista.
First I do prefer to use Bluetooth over USB. The reason: it is very often that I am in the room, were the GSM/3G signal is poor. Then I can place my Uni in the window or other place were the signal is much stronger, and connect with the Uni using Bluetooth. The transfer is more or less on the same level as on USB anyway.
Now, Internet sharing option is a new function in WM6, bit like internet sharing in desktop windows. Our PC is not using the Uni as a modem. It uses it as kind of gateway to internet, meaning it use different protocols then with modem connection.
So, after pairing my Uni with my PC in Bluetooth, I got another kind of network connection on my network connections list. It is marked as closed connection with red mark on Bluetooth icon on this list. Then I go to internet sharing in my Uni and select Bluetooth Pan option and then click “Connect”. It establishes its own connection to internet using setup, previously configured in my Uni.
Then, in my PC I go to Network connections list and just click “Bluetooth network connection” icon. This makes my PC to connect with my Uni via Bluetooth using network (TCP/IP) protocol and use it as normal internet gateway. If I click the icon once more, then I get window showing standard connection with bites transferred, buttons for options, disconnection and so on. It shows that the connection is with 1Gb/s, but this is only for connection with my Uni. The connection from Uni to Internet is , obviously much slower and depends of local conditions and 3G standard.
Hope I could help.
Edit:
If I try to do the same over USB, then there is a problem. After connecting USB cable, my PC automatically goes into AS mode and syncs with my Uni. Then If in internet sharing I select USB and click "Connect" the syncing stops, AS in Uni shuts down (this is OK), but my PC try to install a new driver for new device and it does not find it, so it can not recognize my Uni as a proper gateway to connect with over USB. If it would install a driver then on Network connections list a new connection should show up, probably named as "USB network connection".
That’s the other reason I do not use it this way.
Show second and third post. Expain how to quit USB in AS to use this feature.
I will try this trroght BT, but (for me) via Cable is better, the pda is charging all the time. Via Bluetooth the battery goes down quickly.
People need help. I flashed my cingular 8125 with crossbow reloaded rom, its great but cannot seem to understand how to use internet connection sharing to get my laptop online. under network connections i can see that my phone is connected to the internet. but my laptop refuses to browse any site. i have winxp.

Check your firewall. In this mode, you are loged to a new network with different IP than your IP from your home network, if any. Using internet sharing your computer gets IP from your PPC. In my case it is 192.168.0.xx and the gateway is 192.168.0.1. It means that if your firewall was set to accept your home network with different IP, then you have to set it to accept this new IP as well. Oherways you will not get any comunication through this chanell. Of cource, this suggestion is valid only if you have any other firewall then Windows Defender.

I am using this in Vista. There is something named as Center for Windows Mobile Cervices. This is Vista version of AS. Here I do not need to quite USB and AS. Simply set Internet sharing option in your PPC for Bluetooth PAN and then click "Connect" in PPC. After that, click "Bluetooth Network Connection" in your Network Connections List in the PC. You will get the page with list of bluetooth access points. You should see your PPC device marked as the default device. Bellow you have "Connect" button. Click it and you are done.
By the way, the second and other posts describe the attempt to connect in the old way using modem connection. WM6 does not provide the modem support for PC connection. It means that officialy you can not use WM6 device as a modem like with WM5 or Symbian devices. However, HTC has released the modem driver for WinXP and Vista for new WM6 as an after market support. You can google for this on HTC pages. I never used this, cause this new way seems to me a lot easier. Also I never heard about anybody who succeeded with does drivers.
I use Windows Xp and the firewall is OFF
With the new WM6 rom of Ivan works for me

Check email through USB internet connection, how? (HTC Touch Pro / Raphael)

2 Questions:
[Question 1] - SOLVED & Thanks to all~
I want to use my Touch Pro to check my hotmail through USB internet connection with my PC. *Not Outlook @ my PPC.
What I've done:
1. I've set up an Hotmail account at my Touch Pro
2. I've tested to check Hotmail using HSDPA/3G/EDGE connection, everything is fine.
3. After plugging with my USB to my PC, I can browse internet through Opera.
Problem:
1. But with the USB connected to my PC, everytime I try to check my Hotmail from my Touch Pro, it starts connecting to internet by itself using HSDPA/3G/EDGE.
2. How to make it to use my USB connection?
[Question 2] (NEW & not solve yet > added & edited @ 17/10/2008)
Another question (but still regarding check email through USB).

I don 't know how to select your internet connection actually. But you can allways block your HSDPA/3G/EDGE internet connection with NoDATA software (freeware, just two screen taps) enforcing your mobile use USB.
If anyone knows another solution I 'll be happy to hear.
I have an 838pro, but I usually just close any data connections first, then when the box pops up saying its going to connect via 3g, I cancel it and then it defaults to the usb/wifi connection. It seems WML defaults to using your 3g connection every time so unfortunately you have to do this every time.
Cheers
Thanks for the fast reply, will try both and update this thread again.
Btw, any chance we can modify the registry or etc to change the default connection?
Hey, it works! I've install NoData and use it to disable my Touch Pro 3G/GPRS connection, and check my Hotmail, and it works perfectly!
Thanks, freco & wireless
Glad you got it sorted - just a quick thought...
In the Activesync connection settings there is an option File > Connection Settings > "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to desktop" - if you disabled/unchecked this would it not do the same thing?
I think "wireless connection" means WiFi.
If you 're wright when cradled or usb connected you cannot make or recieve calls with these setting, which is not happening.

I thougt it only applied to data - I've certainly made calls with my device docked. I`ll have a play with my htc later...
Just some update to this thread, I just have my Touch Pro 'hard-reset' due to touch panel was not functioning, and now after total hard-reset ...
I can use the USB connection without having 'NoData' installed...
wondering why...
in activesync connection settings, untick 'Allow wirelss connection on device when connected to desktop'
this should work
For each email account you have to manually choose which type of connection to use.
In email got to:
Menu->Tools->Options, select email, ->Edit account setup->Advanced Server Settings.
Now you can choose if you want the email to use GPRS or Wifi but you have to do this whole thing everytime you change! Not good.
For USB connection I don't know - could you perhaps tell us what it is using?
Thanks.

Huh, I installed it on my Fuze, turned off both data connections shown, launched Opera and it went right online via 3G! I then tried a soft reset and found the same behavior. The program seems to do nothing.
To solve this issue without downloading or using any extra piece of software:
1. Through Settings > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. select Advanced > Select Networks > then choose My ISP as your internet communication method
3. choose New > enter any name you like then select a modem type "Hayes Compatible on COM1" or any option rather than Cellular GPRS, 3G.
4. the trick, just enter *99***2# in the required phone number as this is a Windows-based code to directly call a device for internet connection where you can replace the number 2 with any other number for multiple sharing internet connection with different devices at the same time.
Now everything will work just fine
Important notes:
-------------------
Make sure that:
1. in the "Network Connections" in Microsoft Windows XP or Vista you have a new icon of "Internet Connection" under Internet Gateway that appeared once you have connected your HTC in ActiveSync or WMDC 6.1 modes.
Hint:
you can use Internet Sharing application installed in HTC in order to create a new ISP connection profile instead of going through Connections option.
Hope this contribution could be usfeul,
Thanks

Using Stock Rom.
Checked as you said, but still not connecting.
" and make sure the internet is selected and NOT my work network."
no when you are connected to activesync and want to use your pc's internet
it's my work network you have to choose not internet
I dont know if this works on WM phones but there is a piece of software called JoikuSpot which will turn your phone into a Wifi hotspot, provided you have a wifi enabled phone. I have it installed on a N85 (sniff, dropped my diamond off the roof, still works but batt only lasts about and hour) and it works a treat. No need for blue tooth or cables.

Prevent Desktop-Passthrough with 6.5.x

Hi All,
I'm running Windows Mobile 6.5.3 and am having a pain of a time locating the concept of this.
What I am trying to do is the following:
1. Plug my phone into my computer and activesync.
2. Allow for My Mobiler to access and control my phone.
3. Prevent my Phone from accessing network resources via my computer.
4. When I surf, have my phone use its data connection, not Desktop-Passthrough.
I want the benefits of charging and remote control of the phone, with the benefits of text messaging/surfing/email as on-device data.
I've tried setting the allowLSP to be 0, 01 and 10. No success.
My litmus test is tcpview to see whether or not the end-point is being shown on my computer.
I've done alot of searching, xda, ppcgeeks, google and microsoft. But, no success yet.
Thanks.

[Guide] Reverse USB Tethering

Hey Everyone,
I was searching all over Google and XDA to find an applicable solution to have reverse USB tethering enabled on my Captivate - I recall it was a default option in the stock JH6 it came with but afterwards, it was removed.
This is only for Windows based machines. I've tested this to work on my 32-bit Windows 7 laptop.
Now, before I go on, i'm going to mention some requirements to get this running:
*Rooted Captivate
*A console emulator - or program to apply a script
*USB Tethering in the Settings menu, most probably under "Wireless & Network"
*A Windows machine
*USB Drivers for your Captivate MUST be installed
There are two parts to getting this work, let's start by connecting the phone in "Debugging Mode" to the PC:
1.
Go to "Settings" --> "Wireless and networks" --> "Tethering" then select the check mark next to "USB Tethering"
2.
Open your console emulator - and type in the below:
su
netcfg usb0 dhcp
This will force the USB to obtain its IP Address/Info from the DHCP server.
On the Windows machine, you will need to apply the below:
1.
Network and Sharing Center --> Network Connections (Change Adapter Settings)
2.
Make note of your Samsung USB interface, mine is named "Local Area Connection 10" (SAMSUNG Android USB Remote NDIS Network Device)
3.
Select the Network interface that you would like to share - mine is "Wireless Network Connection", and go to its "Properties"
4.
Go to the "Sharing" tab
5.
Check the first box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection"
6.
In the drop-down box, choose the interface that recflect's your Samsung's USB
7.
Apply & OK, you should be good to go.
If this works on your side, don't forget to hit the "Thanks" button.
I hope you all enjoy!!
Edit:
Added a script so that users are able to apply the script via GScript rather than use a console emulator.

If your office PC has wi-fi adapter in it and runs Windows 7, you can use this guide http://tameyourpc.blogspot.com/2009/07/windows-7-as-wireless-access-point.html to turn your PC into a wifi AP. That's what I did in my office using my office laptop.
Office PC does have wi-fi, but getting Windows 7??? It is like hoping to get Honeycomb on our captivate
Well, I dont really care much now, I use about 1.6 to 1.7 gigs a month of 3g even after hooking onto every free wifi spot I get! so I am good..
I love how I was trying to fond out how to do this last month; I cant connect to the school's wifi anymore so I had to upgrade my data plan.
However im definitely going to do this when I get back.

I'm using it just fine here, not sure if it could be that the PC you're connecting to uses a proxy/firewall/security suite or something that might be blocking off some sort of traffic..
Correct me if i'm wrong, but you can browse the net, right?
Interesting, thanks

Will this reset to normal tether mode upon reboot? If not, what's the reset command?

yes, in fact, just upon removing the usb cable
i believe that even disabling/re-enabling usb tether should do the trick but i haven't tried it
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but is this method still usable? or does anyone has a better way to do reverse tethering by now?

Hey,
Sorry for not checking back on this.
I still use it till the day on Andromeda 2.2 and it rocks
Tell me how it works for you
I don't get it? You could use you PC for internet stuff and your phone as a phone? I love my smartphone but if I'm near a computer, that's usually going to be used first for anything data.

In simple words, you could get your Captivate to use internet off your PC, rather than waste your battery on wireless, or your GBs on your data plan - or simply if there is no wireless network!

You missed his point, he is saying why bother using the internet on your phone at all if you have a freakin COMPUTER in front of you.

Exactly 10char
Didn't really worked, can you help me out?
I got
1) USB debugging mode on
2) plugged in my phone to the pc
3) ticked Tethering in settings
4) opened the app "terminal emulator"
5) keyed in
su
netcfg usb0 dhcp
6) Change adapter settings, and set to share, however I don't have the drop down box, so I'd figure it is on the advanced tab but I'm quite clueless to what to fill (I'm on windows 7)

Ok, so from the screenshots it seems you've got the wrong interface:
3.
Select the Network interface that you would like to share - mine is "Wireless Network Connection", and go to its "Properties"

So that should be the interface you want to share, say your Ethernet or Wireless.
And I believe that you configure the PC side first, then the phone side...
Tell me if it works this way for you.
I lost you, you're on a window xp machine? mine doesn't read as wireless network but as local area connection, I did start from the phone side, but the settings on the adapter seems to stick after I unplug and everything. Can I have a few screenshots? Sorry for the trouble.
