My mobiler on linux, or linux equivalent. - General Questions and Answers

Does anyone know of such a thing? My mobiler and my XV6700 are one of the only things keeping me from nuking my windows drive and just going 100% linux. I have yet to get it running and was wondering if there was some equivalent.
If such a thing could be done, I would gladly buy it

I just found this through Google...
http://www.pcs.uk.com/nsm/remote_control.htm
It's a cross-platform (PC, Mac, Linux) app that includes PPC support. I just downloaded it, haven't tried it out though... too late, and am moving tomorrow, so it'll be a few days before I can get to it.

I'm using without problem MyMobiler (and MyExplorer) in linux using Wine, and the pocketpc connected to my wifi.

See when I launch wine it only comes up with a blank space where the icon would be, and I can't modify any of the settings. This is on ubuntu.

Well, I thought I was the only one
I still haven't been able to transfer files between linux and mexplorer, neither using drag&drop nor copy&paste. Does it work for you?

The drag&drop or copy&paste dos not function from a nautilus window to the mexplorer window: you have to use the two panel in mexplorer.

I tried MyMobileR 1.23 with wine.
The program installed fine under wine - but it is not able to connect to my phone. (Using "Connect to IP")
The program works fine under Windows though...

Have you started it manually in the phone?

I located the application under "Programs" - and I've started it... Though - is it supposed to look close to the Windows application...?
Like with options of "Connect" and "Connect IP" ?
(Though, I'm unable to use the Connect IP function on the phone - since it does not display my keyboard...)

Runs great here too on a Ubuntu 8.10 laptop!

Created CAB for phone install.
I did install in wine too, but I'm not sure how well it worked out.
I eventually went and downloaded the ZIP file from MyMoblier website, and that is what I'm using now. Running MyMobiler.exe and MExplorer.exe in wine are working great.
Only 2 problems I have are... MyMobiler complains about tray icons to debug output. And MyMobiler will not install the software "to" the phone. I guess this was supposed to be done during ActiveSync during the initial installation to the PC.
So to fix problem #2 I created a cab for the files on the phone that MyMobiler needs. I could not get an attachment to post in this reply, so I created a new thread (thread #725114) that has the CAB file attached

steps to use wine with mymobiler.exe
can you please provide me the steps to install mymobiler with wine.
I've got ubuntu 10. and I cannot seem to install mymobiler.exe into the programs of wine.
I appreciate it! Thanks

Here are the steps i used 2 make MyMobiler work thru usb on ubuntu maverick using WINE.
Download MyMobiler V1.25....Unzip & copy the folder onto ur desktop or any location on ur ubuntu partition..open d folder, ryt click the MyMobiler.exe and select properties...Got to d "Permissions" tab n tick the execute box, then close...
Now run MyMobiler from the start menu on your phone & click connect...it should close but no worries as its working in d background..Connect your phone to your pc, ur network should report Auto eth3 connected...
Now right-click the MyMobiler.exe on ur pc n select "open with wine....". Notice the MyMobiler icon appear in ur taskbar above, right-click dat and select connect ip, click connect in d window dat appears n it should close.
Right-click the MyMobiler icon again n select "Open Mobiler"......Voila!!
Subsequent connections should auto-connect when u just run MyMobiler from your pc..
Hope this helps those out there...

Is there any desktop WM5 emulator??

There are certain good programs that I would like to use, but I have a Treo 750 and they need 320x240 resolution in order to work. I was wondering if someone knows of a WM5 emulator that I could run on desktop and install those programs on that and run them right on my PC screen....
Any body???

Hi,
So, you want a WM5/6 emulator on Windows XP/Vista, right?
If so, Microsoft has a free one
Google for "microsoft device emulator". Download the 2.0 final version not the 1.0 or the 2.0 beta.
You will need to download the WM5 image as well from them.
Thanks.

Thanks buddy for guiding... I downloaded the emulator from Microsoft... I searched for Emulator images and I got result for WM5.0 also,,, but on the given list of possible download files, there is no English version. Could you please tell which one should I download...
Thanks for directing me....
Microsoft... I downloaded all through Microsoft....
There are many guides available teaching how to setup and use the Device Emulator.
As far as I can remember, the name of the image is efp.msi or similar.
yeah this is good, and if you want to see your connected device as it looks on your device and use it on your pc as if you were doing so on your pocket pc, use 'my mobiler' its freeware and easily available
Thanks for leading me this far. I got emulator to load up and all is going fine except I cant figure out how to transfer cab files to the emulator to install and how to make internet to work on the emulator. I want to test my website how it loads on the PDA's and use some softwares......
I hope you managed to transfer cab (& other) files to the emulator.
If you have not succeeded do the following:
1. Install Activesync (4.x) on PC where Emulator is running.
2. Configure ActiveSync on PC to use DMA for syncing.
3. Configure ActiveSync on Emulator to use DMA (it should be DMA anyways).
4. Open Device Emulator Manager.
5. Start the Image.
6. In the device manager click refresh if you don't see the emulated device.
7. Right click on the emulated device Emulator Device Manager and click cradle.
8. This will simulate cradling the device.
9. Now ActiveSync on both sides should be connected and then you could explore the emulated directories from activesync.
~Cheers

Which is the host soft. for the remote desktop app.?

The one that comes with the TP ?
Uhhh....Remote Desktop
In Windows XP/Vista, you need to allow Remote Access in your System Properties (do Windows Key + Break to load the system properties); there should be a "Remote" tab and on there you have to tick the "Allow Users to connect remotely to this computer" and then click Select Remote Users to add the user or users you want to be able to connect.
Hope you get it sorted

The Remote Desktop capabilities are built in to Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, but you can have a go with this hack if you want to get it working with Vista Home or Home Premium (Still not sure if it will work with Vista Basic tho')
Oh, and if you've got SP1 or SP2 (you should have!!), then you need to update the file downloaded above with the one in this ZIP file before running the batch
Cheers,
Mark.

x11 via Xvfb and x11vnc

I'm trying to get a window manager running under Debian. I'm using Xvfb and x11vnc. So far I've gotten the server up and running but I get a socket error on my vnc viewer after negotiating protocol. Anyone want to help?
Well, the clean way to display a X client on the phone would be IMHO to implement an x server in a windows. kind of like xming or xephyr. Too bad I don't know java
Anyway, using vnc looks like a smart idea. I worry about the performance, though.
I'll give it a try once I have re-installed debian on my ADP1 (trying to install it in a dedicated partition on the sd)

Use X over SSH. Man I'll just write up a post.
I think he's trying to achieve X display on the phone, not on his computer.
Yes, I'm trying to get the display on the phone, not having to really on tunneling x11 over ssh.
I'm running a similar setup on my phone, in order to run X apps like xpdf. Works fine. Here's what you need:
In your debian chroot, apt-get install tightvncserver, and run it.
On the android side, run the android VNC viewer and connect to localhost:1 (or whatever display tightvncserver started). You'll get X on your screen.
You can apt-get and run a small window manager like twm if you need one. I generally use it without a window manager, with apps running in full-screen mode. For example, "xpdf -g 1024x768+0+0 some-file.pdf" to view a PDF. (at least until there's a decent PDF viewer for android).
Don't bother trying OpenOffice on it though. Too heavy - I actually tried it.

Are you telling me you got to run x app on the phone?
Yep, that's what I wrote. It was one of the first things I installed on the phone when I bought it. And performance is not as bad as I expected, as long as you don't try to run animation. Reasonable for reading a pdf.
Has anyone else tried this?
I cannot connect with android vnc viewer from my phone and tightvnc server running on debian showing "localhost:/#".
I am not using a password. I am trying to log in on vnc-viewer at 127.0.0.1 and have tried several ports including the default and 23.

Will i be abkle to run pidgin?
when i try to run vncserver it tells me that the USER envirioment variable i snot set
For the user variable error.Type su Again by itself before you start vnc. It has to do with now having set user in the enviroment set. I have an image that give you 2 gigs more of free space (uses up storage card) the current one only has 300megs free which limits you drastically and also a fixed script that you won't have to go into su again....
For the guys that can't get vnc working type localhost in the server field only and as for port use 5901... Use a password upon initial setup of vnc. Sorry about spekking errors but I'm half drunk and typing on g1
Okay I set up the password and stuff but when I go to the vnc viewer on the phone it does nto conect and the crash
When I go to vnc-viewer, I can log in but the window I get says--
Xsession:unable to start x session ---- no "/root/.xsession" ...no session managers,
Can someone please help me get this runing, my messenger is [email protected]
Okay I finally got it to run and get a grey screen, when i go t back to termina it is on android terminal not debian so I log back.
Now how to I run pidgin after I install it? just type pidgin?

I warn you it will be slow and still cant use the sub functions of the buttons form the keyboard to at least I don't know how. I'm trying to take a screenshot with the program from the windows manager, and i use twm
Okay I have tried with twm, vtwm, and icewm
So far I like icewm the most but still have vtwm for back up. It runs fine not as slow as before with twm. I have pidgin runing but still cant figure out how to run the screenshot program that comes with debian.
Can anyone tell me a way to get a screenshot in command line so I can show you the screen and prove that it works?

Any linux (ubuntu) users with success?

Hi again guys!
Ever since the ATT update usb connecting to the phone in ubuntu is sporadic and unreliable. I can usually get my photos off of it. Sometime I can even get into a non-root basic filesystem as well
However this isn't my main problem. I want to root the phone and install custom ROM's etc... Tried the VMware and a version of windows and installed the samsung drivers to XP but have trouble (again) with the usb and VMware.
Any help would be appreciated.
Additionally I'm pretty pissed off about the update thing. I don't care about tethering per se but that underhanded **** is why I dumped microsoft in the first place. I'll dump ATT too and spend my money elsewhere.

Linux user here. I haven't had the problems you describe. I have lately been using ES File Explorer to copy to and from a shared folder on my desktop. avoiding the USB for file transfers all together. when I do connect via USB I usually use ' adb push' and 'adb pull' to move files around.
To Root your phone there is an 'update.zip' method that I used (no computer needed)
There is also a tool called ClockworkMod Recovery that you can use to install custom rom's and create nandroid backups. (no computer needed)
And finally if you manage to screw up and can not boot, you can use Heimdall on linux like you would use Odin on Windows.
enjoy your phone...
-p
Thank-you so much!!!
I was thinking about exactly what you wrote. Why not do it the linux way? Admittedly my skills are weak.
Had a little trouble with the update.zip but went to the wiki (again) and the info on how to do it from the phone was there. BTW the wiki has improved since last week.
Rooted phone and installed Titanium Backup and Clockwork Recovery. In my excitement I deleted all the ATT bloatware before backing them up and the ROM. Oh well... Too bad.
Now I just feel great about my phone. Needs some customization but no hurry. Only thing was that TB prompted me to go to settings/applications/ and tick "unknown sources". Doesn't exist.
Thanks again! If you have anymore nuggets of info...?
linux newb here but i try
edit:
the phone can mount to a vm in dowload mode for use with odin or in kies mtp mode as long as debugging is off, otherwise it likes to mount to the host pc as a drive, i dont know a work around but you can make the phone a shared folder with the vm client so you can see the files in the vm, it'll be seen as a network location in that case.
it can mount as a drive in linux but you need to select to mount from the phone. i was having problems with it in eclair in windows and didnt try it in linux but froyo is working great. in eclair it may help to try with debugging on then you can mount from the notification bar.

To enable side loading(unknown sources). I used method 5 from this post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
and here is a link to my comments on the method later in the thread regarding some punctuation corrections.
This method uses adb from the SDK to pull the settings.db file off and edit it using sqlite3 before pushing it back on.
I believe you can edit the file directly on your phone once you have root and install a terminal app from the marketplace.
The above forum post is also in the wiki you referenced previously. basically you want to look for methods to "enable side loading"

I'm using Ubuntu and have had no problems. Rooted and removed market restrictions without a hitch.

Oh I've tried it all-wichaways! That hasn't worked either. The card(s) are seen but no longer mount like they used to. When I choose media player I get this message on the phone: PC connection only available in idle screen. Close all running applications. I think something may be corrupted on the phone.
Before I start flashing anything I'm going to give 10.10 a go. Ubuntu specifies that 10.10 plays nice with Android. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with my startup disks and have wasted three of them on three different downloads. Won't fully boot. Unfortunately, I've had this experience before with other releases, and it almost always was something being wrong with the .iso that was downloaded. Even tried a usb startup and same experience.
Woes. PITA!

Make sure you burn your disks at a slow speed. Like 4x. Also try downloading over a stable wired connection. Use the md5 tool to check your download and your burn. If you can figure out when it is getting corrupt you have a fighting chance.
Reporting back. Finally got 10.10 to boot from a usb flashdrive by disabling the BootParameters. I guess 10.10 is so cutting edge my 2.5 yo toshiba can't boot it easily.
Reinstalled 10.04 without a hitch and since I didn't format my /home still kept everything. But I tried connecting by usb before any updates. No worky. And not after the 256M of updates either.
It's the phone I'm sure. Not really keen on flashing the ROM yet just to fix this. Recollection is that Samsung didn't put a good effort into this part of the phone. But I think again..
Why not eschew the usb for file transfers? I've got Bluetooth and wifi right here. Who needs clunky old usb? Adhoc network?
Ideas? Wifi would be easiest since my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I use an app called ES File Explorer (free in the market) to navagate to a shared folder on my desktop.
My (samba) shared folder has no restrictions and works well. Only issue is I have to fix ownership and permissions on things copied over to the computer from the phone. If you choose to password protect yours let me know how that works out for you.

It supports FTP for sure. I'm no security expert but I doubt its a good idea to share a samba share over the internet.
If you want remote access to you desktop there are secure methods for that. The method I would choose would depend on my desire/need for a remote connection.
If I just want to access my shared folder I would probably set up a VPN connection and then use ES FileExplorer.
To fully control the computer, use VNC or other "remote desktop" application.
Been reading up on Samba. It is the linux way lol. Also, I went and got a Bluetooth micro-adapter. Installed drivers from the repository.
Transferred some pics and music back and forth. All GUI based. Worked first time. I'm still this side of the learning curve but my base needs are met.
The Bluetooth works great but I'd like to learn a bit more about the wifi. Seems to me one should be able to move files with a VPN via the wireless adapters and no router. I just lack the knowledge and skill to do it.
But thanks for reminding me about the ES FileExplorer! As far as the permissions in Ubuntu for the shared folder I just checked the box under right-click- sharing options allow others to create and delete files from this folder. I think that works.

[Q] New WP7 User - running Ubuntu :(

Hi everyone! I recently switched from a Pre 2 to an HTC Trophy. I love WP7 but I have a few problems. Before I tell you about them I will tell you I have installed the Mango beta onto my device. (BTW I'm on Verizon) Now onto my issues.
* I am running Ubuntu. I have Zune installed in a Windows XP emulator. For some reason the entire computer (Ubuntu and Windows XP) don't recognize the phone when connected via USB. The device just charges.
* I am a big music buff and I NEED MUSIC ON MY DEVICE. As I have said, I run Ubuntu, how am I supposed to do this?
* I would love to use all those fun programs to edit the registry on the device to change the color schemes (because I hate the colors that come pre installed) but I run Ubuntu. I'm sure I could do it via emulator but how come my phone is not recognized?
* Please tell me why my phone isn't recognized.
Thankyou for all help in advance and I am really really really happy to be a part of this community. I used to be a member on XDA back in my Android days and I'm psyched to be back. Please help me with my problems

Thanks for the reply, however, I already stated I'm running Windows XP in VirtualBox. When I run lsusb in Linux terminal one of the USB devices is Microsoft and when I unplug the device and run the command again it disappears. So it seems Ubuntu knows its there but since it has no mass storage capabilities it does not display it on the desktop. This still doesn't explain why Windows XP cannot see it because I have USB connections settings checked in VirtualBox.
I think it is a Windows XP problème... Windows 7 does a better job in recognizing devices.
