hello,
I have my tp for a while now, but didn't use much gps. now i tried google maps and tt7, but it takes up to 10-15 min. to get a fix. How is this possible?? I updated the latest quickgps, but nothing....??
thnx!

How is another radio supposed to fix this problem?! Afaik, the GPS-Receiption has nothing to do with the GSM-Radio nor its firmware....it isnt even controllable by software.
Radios will make a difference with your GSM/DATA strength, GPS reception, Camera smoothness, WiFi, and battery life.
This is what I've been living with for the past year with my Kaiser (and alot more members over there too).
Trying out radios along with ROMs to see which is the best mix.
Radios are not only firmware for the radio chip, it is for all what I have mentioned above, even sound in some cases would disappear.
Just don't forget to HardSPL your device.
You could also try GPSGate to aid GPS fast fix.

Work around
Hey,
I was reading the tread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420933
I have the same problem, tt7 takes about 3 mins to get a fix.
Right after i use googlemaps (which gets fix in 10 secs) i start tt7, then it gets a fix in 20 secs.
Now i've installed GPSGate, created a new virtual com port with it and set tt7 to that port. Now I have no issues with tt7
Yeah, GPSGate work like a charm

Whats GPSGate? Why do you need to run it with tt7? Not sure what its used for. DOes it give faster connection?
oh great, so in other words. to get a function working reliably that should be doing it out of the box on these pricey phones, we have to spend more dosh to get it working.
my gps also works like cack... yes i have tried all the radios..
guess i am another sucker who has to go buy gps gate...
I bought gspgate, and now? what do I need to do?

This is so stupid!!! I'm very angry with HTC. Don't they test in real life their products?!??! Damn it....
i think it is related to powersaving or the gps driver itself is bugging
when you turn off the phone and turn it back on and wait for like 5 minutes to get the gps doing its cold start it works fine. Then i quit tt7 and start it again .. still works fine.. 10 minutes later the phone suspends and i wake it up and suddenly there is no gps. then it finds a gps device and then it finds sattelites and then it got a fix (after way to long time) and then right when it fixes it looses the gps device ..
conclusion: this is has to be some powersaving which makes the gps device doing a cold start again while it is started allready.
i also noticed when you start quickgps and then exit it and go to tomtom it suddenly finds all preloaded sattelites ...
when running advconfig3 the assisted gps is turned off by default and i turned it on. Im going to put it back to default to see if it makes a difference

maybe because it is a separate gps receiver... got nothing to do with radio rom nor driver.. the gps has his own..
i also think that, we have to wait for a new gps driver
This really does suck and shame on HTC
yeah, I sold my tytn 2 because of all the problems... now history repeats...
now I do have gps gate, and it sucks even more, what do I need to do, to get it better?

I just stuck the bit in about trying the radios etc because that is what so many people seem to think has an effect on the operation of the handset. If it has nothing to do with the GPS then so be it.
Does not change the fact that it works like cack....

Hi,
I had a similar issue with TomTom 6 yesterday.
I had set the Assisted GPS to ON using the AdvancedConfig program. Whilst i was driving, i would get a satellite fix for about 10 secs then it would get lost, resulting in TomTom suspending for about 15 secs, a fix would be found again, TomTom will come back to life, then lose itself after 10 seconds. This cycle repeated itself throughout my journey.
I then set the Assisted GPS back to its default OFF, did a soft reset and started TomTom again and it worked fine after that.
Could some of the issues we are experiencing be related to tinkering with the Assisted GPS setting?

beh, still cant pick up a single satellite using tomtom7 the satellite lock page is completely blank, with a wheel spinning saying: "poor gps reception, are you in door?" (duh)
while i can acquire a lock using iGo 8, just takes a long time... in door

What is a good program that works with the TP so that I can test to see if my built in gps is working correctly?
I have TOMTOM7 installed and the application works but I can never see any satellites.
I tried mapopolis but i can't seem to establish a connection to the gps.
I updated the gps info using quick gps.
What com port and baud rate does the unit use?
What settings should I have in the "external gps" settings?
Thanks for your help!
Use the attached program to test the GPS.
It will search COM ports automatically
But I guess you can know the port from the settings tabs "External GPS" icon if it's like Kaiser
Anyway, I will be of further use in like 4 days

ok it seems its on com 4 with baud rate of 9600.
ill put it by the window and see if any satellites come up.
The screen just right now says: GPS starting up
Edit: ok great I just got 3 satellites. I guess it works!
Great that it works
You need at least 4 though to get a fix
Kindly, post your radio info and your location and let me know how many satellites did you view (press up on dpad as the 1st screen shows only upto 8 and it can see more, hopefully)

posting the number of satelites you receive is a bit pointless.
This will depend on many factors such as
1) The number of sats viewable at any given time in your area (the sats are not geostationary and therefore move around)
2) The location of the sats during the test - some could be close to the horizon and therefore have a week signal
3) Weather conditions, cloud rain etc,
4) Terrain
etc
etc
Basically, you are right.
But if you are fast enough, you can test several radios in the same 10 mins.
And you can judge by testing in the same place which radio is better for GPS (Fix & View).
A mention of your location will be a referrence for others.
There's a thread with more radio fuss to hold such info to be useful in the future.
Hi pjmiebach - thanks for the hint and the software - I get 4 satellits (yellow beamer) but when I tryit again with Google Maps it finds no Satellite ???
Any explanation from yur side ?
as a matter of fact, on-board GPS works with just about any baud rate you select - so choose the fastest

errr It worked find with TOMTOM7 after taking like 15 min to find it's first fix. Never tried Google maps yet cause my data plan doesn't start until the 8th of Sept.
you can start google maps and check in the right menu for gps and tap that one so it uses the internal gps instead of internetconnection.
it is also a good idea to goto connectionsettings and wipe all existing connections as activesync wont require these and you can download them later from the provider website or by running the carriersetup
ok. ive broken something on my raph. gps was working fine when i flew up to sydneyim guessing ive fiddled with something (external gps setings) and now no worky. tom tom7 is set to internal. if i disable external gps gpstest pauses on com 3 but nothing. if i turn windows on. it stops on com 4 shows some progress bars but they are all at 0 ive soft reset. taken the battery out canter figure out whatsoever wrong. any ideas would be awesome
TT7 and google maps
My tt7 takes 2 - 3 minutes to get a fix.
Google maps takes about 10 secs.
If i start tt7 right after i used gm it takes about 20 secs to get a fix.
I'm gonna try gpsgate and changing the baudrate a bit, see if it helps.
I'll let you know.
** Edit **
GPSGate does the trick for me.
Buy it at your fav appstore and create a new virtual com port for all NMEA progs, go to tt7 gps settings select other nmea device, select the com you just created, at max speed.

Me too! :-( No, I really do not enjoy hard resets...
Another nice GPS testing software is VisualGPSce. Be sure to get that.
I wonder if the problem was with QuickGPS. VisualGPSce was telling me that it "saw" 11 satellites, but wasn't able to lock onto any of them. I know that it had worked previously, but then I had a couple of days break and QuickGPS had updated it's data during that time. After the Hard Reset, I haven't used QuickGPS.
About the performance... seems to get fix quite fast, but looses them very easily too. I tracked today a half hour buss ride and I frequently lost the connection. (Sure it was not the most optimal situation...). Also the accuracy wasn't that good - well, either the GPS or Google Maps. actually VisualGPS showed that the GPS wasn't very accurate in following what was happening. The velocity would go to 0 only about 10 seconds after the buss had stopped at trafic lights or buss stop. Actually the buss frequently took of before the GPS showed us stopped. And then it was extremely slow on catching up. On Google Maps you could see the dot still advancing when the buss had stopped for that 10 seconds. Completely off the road - but that might as well be Googles error.
I do not have TomTom on this, but certainly the speed accuracy from VisualGPSce is not nearly as accurate as my TomTom 720.
Check also that the assisted GPS is not active.
If this option is actived, you lose the signal each x seconds.
To check this option I use Advanced config.
Note : I've a Diamond and one Raphael, same configuration, the Diamond find a fix into 40sec and the Raphael takes sometimes 5min!!!.

i find this to be true as well but the kaiser gps radio worked far better than this touch pro in every app I tried. I can put the TP in my car window and get a signal with random disconnects but if i put it in my lap i cant get anything. I could put the kaiser in my trun and be fine lol. Hopefully some upgrades to the radio software will be coming soon. Same result with me with .19 and .31
Hello,
I tested GPSTuner 5.4, VisualGPS, GoogleMaps and TomTom 7 and I have a strange problem... I installed thos programs after hard reset to be sure...
In the GPS information window the GPS position changes but the speed is always 0km/h and in TomTom or GoogleMaps my position on the map don't move...
Have you seens this problem ?
Any kind of solution ?
PLZ....
PS :
Where can I find rom &Radio version ?
What is your TomTom 7 version ?
Hello All..
this is my first post. I just received my TP today via Vodafone. I havwe sucessfully loaded on TomTom 6 and I have it working with the TT external GPS receiver.
can someone advise me whether the Touch Pro's internal GPS will work and if so, how do I go about setting it up.
PS, I only see 4 options in TT6, and none say internal.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
what to do about navigator 7 ( tomtom ) with gps 1.20 when i start tomtom the first time , it can take up to 1/2 hour to get gps signal whit the internal gps.
when i use my external globalsat gps i have signal in less then 30 secconds.
anyone has anny ideas????
Did you already use the program called "quick GPS" on »Programs?
Normally fisrt time you tried to get signal take a long time, after shoud be less time. My pro is slow, sometimes take up 2 minutes, not more.
Try to use "Quick Gps", this program can "say to GPS" your position trough GSM signal I think...
Robert
Yeah, my Pro normally takes about 2 mins, using Quick GPS. However, that's a lot slower than my Kaiser used to connect - even from cold it would often get a lock within 30s.
What I have noticed with the Pro is that although it takes a long time to get a lock, when it does it is always on 4 bars or more. Makes me wonder if there is a setting somewhere (in the registry maybe?) which tells it not to report it's connected until it has a lock on several satelites?
Is there perhaps a way to get it to connect faster, but with fewer sattelites so perhaps slightly less accurate?
Rowan
I did all what you say and still no gps fix :S
can somebody please help ???
I'm the same. I managed to get a fix using Google Maps when on the road 3 days ago, but I can no longer get a fix with the same program. I've installed TT6 and cannot get a fix - just says "No valid GPS signal". With my Nokia E90, I get a fix sitting indoors on the sofa!!
Any help anyone?

work around
hi,
i was bothered by the same issue.
i found that googlemaps gets a fix within 10 secs.
tt7 takes 2 to 3 mins. if i start gm first and get a fix, close gm and then start tt7 i have a fix in 20 secs.
gpsgate has the same effect. i created a virtual com port with gpsgate, and selected that port in tt7.
i prefer the gm workaround because gpsgate is not free and has to be terminated every time after use, or it`ll drain the battery.
please post your results if you try this yourself.
start quickgps and download the new file.
start tt7 and choose built in gps.
exit tt7
turn device off (long press on powerbutton)
turn it on
wait for it to boot and start tt7 and wait till it has found the gps.
walk to an open area and keep walking. it will find a fix faster that way.
Delete the Logs
This has worked for me...
Was having loads of problems with TT7 and googlemaps (altho that performed better than TT7)
Spotted elsewhere on this site (sorry, dont remember where exactly, was for a different phone tho...)
DELETE THE GPS LOGS!
Power down the phone, once its restarted, in file explorer, delete the GPS logfiles from the windows directory. (sorry, cant remember their exact names, but they're pretty obvious).
Now TT7 works reliably.

I know there are MANY threads to the GPS issues and I am not having problems with GPS lag. I have searched and read and already have the tweaks installed (running the Elite rom rc2 which already had all the tweaks setup) and changed the no data sleep timeout to 1.5 seconds. I also tried on my original radio version, 32 and now have 28 and see no difference in GPS lock times. It will never lock on using Google Maps or iGuidance. In google Maps it says "seeking gps satellites (0)..." for about 5 min then says your gps receiver is having trouble tracking satellites etc. The only way I can get it to work is to use GPS Test, let it get a lock which usually take 5-10 mins, then close GPS Test and open either Google Maps or iGuidance and it will then work fine.
What is also strange is that when using GPS Test, the only way I can get it to work is to have the GPS info set to auto. It will scan then find the gps on com port 4 and 9600 baud. Then it will start up and try to lock on. The next time I run it it will already be on com port 4 and 9600 baud but won't find the gps device. I have to set it back to auto, and restart GPS Test, then it finds it.
There has GOT to be a way to fix the gps lock time on this thing. I have tried with A-GPS on and off and tried with quick-gps and saw no difference in lock speeds. Interesting thing though, I guess Google Maps will using cell tower location to identify where you are? When I use it without gps being turned on, or while it is searching for satellites, and I click "my location" it gets a fairly accurate location on the map.
It seems to me that the issue is with the com port and communication. Almost like the gps won't come out of sleep mode or something and gps test is the only program that can "wake" it.
Thanks for any info.
I am in the exact same situation as you. My TP fails to lock satelites 98% of the times i try.
I have read everything posted about TP GPS on this forum, i have tryed most ROM's and almost all available radio's, i have tryed most tweeks and all that in different set-up.
And after all that my GPS lock's rarely (2-5% of the times i try), and most importantly it doesent seem to be related to the radio nor to the ROM. At this moment i tend to think that i was unlucky with my TP that perhaps is from a lot of TP's with retarded GPS module.
From the forums it seems that most of the ppl dont experience this extrem problem with the GPS, it seems that most of the ppl around only experience laggy gps module update.
Atm i am still waiting for Elite RC3 hopeing that perhaps they'll bring a new gps driver, that will solve my problem.
In case Elite RC3 doesent help i will revert to stock hard-spl/radio/ROM and ill take it to the warranty service.
Sadly this problem with the GPS from my TP blackens my experience with it.
Are you guys sitting in your homes trying to get a lock? because then it is very unlikely you'll ever get a lock.
I have to go outside and wait about 1 minute to get a lock and then its fine. However, I DO have to use the HTC gps tool to get a lock before I can use google maps or any other gps program.
I am outside with no obstructions. I did find this app and may play around with it. So far I havne't been able to get it to get a lock unless I use GPS Test first.
http://www.geoterrestrial.com/gpstoday/
My Telus Touch Pro locks in 3-5 seconds every time after modifying the GPS and adding the correct IP settings for Telus' AGPS. This combined with OCN8 makes for an excellent GPS device.
The guide for the GPS hack was from this forum, just can't recall where.
I have the same problem with GPS Test as you all described. I am now running qsqa's PROven ROM and I noticed following: GPS Test often fails to start-up the GPS receiver, but VisualGPSce worked every time I tried. It is a free software, included in the PROven ROM. If u use a different ROM, you can download it from here: http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm
Give it a try, it sure helped me!!!!
Like many of you, I've been one of the unlucky few with nonworking GPS on my Fuze. I began messing with some settings in Google Maps last night, and by trial and error was able to go from not even picking up a GPS receiver to achieving an 11 satellite lock within a few seconds:
Using your GPS-enabled program of choice (I was using Google Maps) ensure your GPS settings are on COM4 at 256000 baud.
I am running a stock rom with only a few (non-related) registry tweaks. If you are out of options with your GPS, it couldn't hurt to try this.
Hope this helps somebody!
The problem is that it works for now but in a few days or even the next time use GPS it wont work. Seems like the GPS will work whenever it feels like it.

so true, yesterday i did a test at work, i was inside my job, its a resturant and i was sitting near the coner seats where both sides was open and only a window seperate me from the outside, i was not getting any GPS signal at all, i open the side door and just put my hand out with the phone and presto i started getting some signal but i wasnt getting all the signal, no matter which app i used that day wasnt getting no sats expect for GPS test and GPS test wasnt showing all full sats, so all in all the FUZE GPS is Bollocks and we all know.
First of all, i apologise for the "catchy" title.
For this past week, i have been flashing my TP, with various firmwares / radios etc. However, i decided to go with the new stock ROM released by HTC,
[-HTC Touch Pro-MRII-RUU_Raphael_hTC_Asia_WWE_5.07.707.2_Radio_Signed_Raphael_52.58.25.30_1.11.25.01_Ship]
But i am sure this will work even for users of different ROMS.
Anyway, with this and alot of other ROMS, i faced this issue. Poor GPS reception. Mind you, AGPS is not included in the Asian version of the ROM, since we don't use it , and most probably AGPS uses data connection, which is quite expensive here. Anyway, even after tweaking the registry (followed one of the great threads here), the GPS was horrible. After updating the quickgps, i took my phone, and placed it beside my window. About 10 ~ 15 minutes later, it had fixed it self to a few sattelites. 10 ~ 15 minutes is alittle bit too long for me.
When i took it outside (after re-starting the phone) it still took about 10 minutes to get a signal. Later on, it becomes even harder to fix to sattelites after a few reboots. I don't know what the problem was.
I read around the forums and there was a thread about the RADIO, 1.12.25.19. People were saying how good it was for the battery life of the phone and especially GPS. Some even claimed to have gotten a GPS fix within 10 seconds, and some could even get gps singnals indoors. I flashed my RADIO to ver 1.12.25.19 and there still wasn't much changes on the GPS part.
Today morning, i decided to hard reset my phone and then play around a little and to my amazement i found a gem. So here is what i did.
After hard resetting my phone, i didn't install apps. I didn't apply any registry fix for the gps. Everything was in it's original state. I installed Msoft .net CF 3.5 . This is because it is required to run an app, GPSTOOLPRO.exe , so it could hunt for this sattelites. An alternative to GPSTEST, but i like this better.
So here is what i Did. **my quickgps isn't updated**
I went to
Start > Settings > System [TAB] > External GPS
GPS program port, I set it to (NONE). Then i pressed ok.
Then i clicked on External GPS again.
This time my GPS Program Port value is (NONE) and i went to the Hardware Tab.
GPS Hardware Port, you can put in any value you like. Mine was COM4 and the BAUD RATE is 115200.
Somehow once you press Ok, and you come back to the same menu, You will see that your GPS hardware Port is set to NONE, and your BAUD RATE is it's default.
I am not sure if i am the only one facing this issue , but it's no problem
After setting up the GPS hardware port and the BAUD RATE as above, Do not close the menu. Also Make sure , [Manage GPS automatically] from the Access Tab is enabled.
From here, Do not press ok. Let the menu remain and run in the background. Then i went on the start bar, went to file explorer and ran my app, GPSTOOLPRO.exe to search for sattelites and get a fix.
The Result= I could get satelite signal about 12 of them almost immediately & fix in less than a minute. I could also get a fix indoors where previously i couldn't. The GPS certainly has improved.
Do take note, I tried using gpstest but it was unable to detect the port. So i suggest searching for "GPSTOOLPRO" around XDA and use that instead.
Hope this helps
Thanks for sharing It will be very useful
how are you getting signal inside? must be alot of windows. lol
What do you mean signal inside? You mean indoors?
And yes, about 2 + 1 windows would be open. 2 (external GPS + GPSTOOLPRO) + 1 (your choice of gps navigator)

Hope this helps

sadly for me, this doesn't seem to work. i hard reset yesterday and am running on a bloat-free fuze stock rom and radio. I installed google maps, att navigator (only way i can EVER get a fix after 5 minutes), and CF 3.5. Trying this now standing inside my bay window facing the a river with lots of open sky and i'm not getting anything
i read the thread this morning about teh .19 radio and i can't wait to try it out this weekend!
what radio are you on? mine is: 1.02.25.32 (stock ATT)

I would try the leaked AT&T 1.12.25.19 radio. It supposedly opens up more slots for sats than the previous radios, which should help getting a fix.
Also which stock ROM are you using? The one it was shipped with or the leaked one? I would upgrade to the leaked AT&T one because it enabled aGPS, which works wonders in getting a fix.
EDIT: Use the link below and download the leaked ROM, it also includes the leaked AT&T upgraded radio...

If you don't have a data connection (too expensive) then how can you be using QuickGPS?
If you do have a data connection then I highly recommend upgrading your rom to a 5.08.502.1 derivative along with keeping the raphael radio you just tried then changing your settings to the public AGPS servers described in Da_G's AGPS thread in the Raphael ROM forum.
this probably doesn't help any, but I have a TP that is about a week old, flashed with mighty rom, radio 1.03.15, and I can sit in my living room, two windows completely covered, and I can get 9 satellites to lock in under 5 seconds. This works in google maps, igo8, really any gps program. I do not use quickgps (I think that is what it is called) or anything else. mine has worked great from the day I brought it home. I have only tried a couple of radios and all worked fine with gps. I am wondering if the newer ones are "better" on gps?

If you're using a Fuze (AT&T variant) this sums up how to get GPS running on your phone: http://www.fuzemobility.com/the-fuze-and-gps/
