Connect through WiFi or 3G - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hai.
First of all I'm very happy with my HTC Touch Pro UK. Before this I used a TyTN II, also a very nice device.
With the Touch pro a have a little problem when retrieving email through IMAP. On the TyTN II the email was retrieved through WiFi if there was a WiFi connection and through 3G when there wasn't.
For Outlook (ActiveSync) on the Touch Pro this works fine, but for IMAP connections, it only wants to connect through 3G, whatever I set in the Advanced Server Settings of the IMAP account. When I choose Vodafone GPRS it connects through 3G, also when there is a WiFi connection active.
Can this behaviour be altered ?
Hope anybody has a solution for this.

Martijn

Coming from the Kaiser you should know there are ALWAYS certain issues which later on are solved dude
Give it time and we shall have some more ROMs for your device .

I wasn't aware that this was a ROM issue. On the TyTN II it was working with the default ROM. I hoped it was just a setting somewhere...
I'll wait for some more tweaks or a new ROM..

I've got the same problem with hotmail using windows live. It always connects via GPRS rather than use the available WiFi. I have found that if the wifi is turned on before soft resetting the device - ie it then starts up with wifi on, i can sync via the wifi connection until the wifi connection is turned off and then it always defaults back to GPRS.

Hmm, I would advise (since i havent got a device here yet to test...will do tomorrow) that you go through the wifi settings and make sure it is set to access "the internet" and not "workplace" or anything else??
Helping out would be so much easier if it was sat right infornt of me...will be soon

Already done that and selected Internet under Wifi. All other programs connect correctly to WiFi ie, Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, GPS Update etc.... its just email that gets it wrong.

Tried the same and results are also the same.

Did anybody find a fix for this ?

Do a search for Modaco nodata. It should allow you to disable the regular 3G data connection, which should (hopefully) force the phone to use wlan if you have a working connection.

This is a fix that really needs to be sorted. If wifi is working, leave 3G alone!
Damn thing is costing me money! I'm not a on a data plan, so it costs a lot more than if I was.
I didn't take a data plan, because everywhere I go, I have access to wifi!
I shouldn't have to disable 3G!
Can't it be done automatically? If wifi has an active connection, don't use 3G/HSPA. Since there is already the nodata program, all it needs is changed to be auto. And yes, I use the word "all" very loosely, I don't know how to code for mobiles!

I already tried this, doesn't work. Connection times out.

I used to have this issue until i switched my settings to "the internet" and not work. did u change both the settings for the wifi card AND the settings for the access point? (not sure if that was what made the difference, but now everything is going through wifi for me.

This is part of the solution IMHO. IMAP now connects through wifi when there is a wifi connection available, but it doesn't fallback to GPRS/3G when wifi is not available.
Any other fantastic ideas ?

Nice fixed one problem, created a new one, this I can't reproduce since my email isn't imap. For everything else if there is no wifi it will connect to edge.
anybody out there with an IMAP email account with the same issue?

Maybe some operator-software changed some properties concerning the Push Mail. So check your network settings. Can you connect to the internet when using Wifi only? When that's possible, you can try to reassign a connection with your Exchange server in activesync. Personally, my Push Mail works on the campus using Wifi and GPRS disabled. So good luck

is it working in true Push mode (schedule= "as item arrives") or in Sync mode (schedule= "Every X minutes")?
anyway, it is not operator-software related issue because my wizard runs XDA Mobile 6 Release 2a with no Extended ROM based files installed.
Check your Firewall Config!
Normal you publish your Exchange OWA Server direct in the internet. Via a Firewall ... possible your Rule Set in the Firewall doesnt allow the access this IP/Adress from Internal LAN/WIFI.
Next is ... possible you cant resolve the DNS Name in the Internal LAN.
Check it ... it isnt a Device Problem ... its a Network Problem!

possible you have block some ports on your firewall!
i must read some whitepapers to know all ports for syncing via exchange.

Push Mail Works fine with wifi, you can set the device to not go on standby mode, when you are in office. Wifi will drain the juice outta your battery though. You dont necessarily need exchange 2003, you can use kerio mail server. I am running kerio and its quite good. No Problems as of now. It has Web Mode, WAP Web, and Exchange OWA, and POP
Test results!
Due to high work load it took me some time to build the test environment and actually test this thing.
it looks like push mail DOES work in WiFi-only mode, beautifully, but when both WiFi and GPRS are connected - mail is downloaded through the slow and expensive GPRS connection rather then through WiFi.
am I the only one dealing with this issue?
P.S. - there is no firewall between my wizard and the internet - just a router. same goes for the exchange environment.

Email can't switch between wifi or GPRS???

Hi, on my Polaris I've my Gmail account which updates itself through IMAP4.
I want the following: Wenn i have a WIFI connection the email will update through WIFI, without WIFI I want hem to automaticly connect with GPRS.
This is standard with internet explorer.
I allready found out that you can switch the connection manually: Mailoptions --> Adanced server options --> Network connection, then change it to internet or GPRS
Is there a way to do this by for example making a network connection which can use both???
Don't know too much about the topic itself, but maybe try a more advanced email program like Outlook?

I'm still using my Hermes whith wm6, whith Outlook so there shouldn't be any real difference, but I haven't noticed the problem you're encountering. Whith WiFi on it uses it and when not, it uses GPRS/3G/HSDPA.
But then again, thw wifi network is set to connect to the internet, and the ISP settings are set to be automatically used.

Considering the fact that I got a 2-month free trial for Outlook, I doubt that the built-in email program is Outlook on the Polaris. Else, it would clearly state Outlook (M$ would not sell it anonymously , my guess )

When connected to WIFI it will get my mail, when not, a pop up is displayed saying: Can't connect with current networkconfiguration. To change this configuration go to this link.

My Polaris configured automatically, I am not sure if it depends on the provider. I am using KPN.
It shows you the result during configuration.

Exactly, it's just weird that both type of connection can be used but you have to change it every time you want to use the other.

Simple stated, I can use both for e-mail and internet and WIFI get's priority over GPRS/UMTS when in WIFI range.
ok... I've had this same problem where my TC won't check email, windows live, etc through my wifi, despite being connected.
The reason is... my wifi connection was setup to say it connects to "work" as opposed to "the internet".
For those having the same problem as me, follow these instructions...
1) Click on start, settings, connections, then "wi-fi" icon
2) Press (hold down) on your wifi connection, and then click "edit".
3) change "connects to", to say "the internet".
4) Click next, next, and finish.
5) Close the settings menu and try again.
Worked for me!
PS... yes I know I'm a donkey for messing it up in the first place, but it's all good fun learning!
Same weird problem here now.
It use to work without problem. Wifi was preferred network.
When wifi not available, GPRS/UMTS (T-Mobile NL) was used. Since yesterday i'm not able to retrieve pop3 mail through G/3G anymore. Internet is ok and WindowsLive also no problem. Also pop3 mail through wifi is no problem.
I'm going to hardreset now.

No internet connection without USB link

HI
I have seemingly lost my internet connection on my Touch Cruise. It worked fine at first but now when I try to connect to any web page, I get the message "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again". It works fine when connected via Activesync and WiFi.
I have tried deleting programs, hard reset and re-installing programs one-by-one to see if any of them have caused the problem, but haven't got anywhere. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

Touch Pro + Exchange + 3G + T-mob = No Go

Hello everyone,
Got my Touch Pro yesterday, first impressions were good but I just realised that there is no way to get my exchange to sync through 3G (or even GPRS).
I'm with 1and1, my parameters are fine (they work on my Vario III with the same SIM card). I'm with T-mobile (I know the 3G reception is not good on the TP, I had to switch to 2G to avoid getting cut off during a call, but I get 4 bars from my desk in a loft, so that shouldn't be a problem!).
I tried the default t-mobile parameters setup by the touch, and I tried to configure the connection manually with the parameters that work well with my Vario III:
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
User name: user or nothing (instead of T-mobile)
Password: pass or nothing
Still a no go. I get the same error message:
Activesync cannot reach the server. Check that the server address and proxy server settings are correct.
Support code: 0x80072F78
I've called 1and1 and they say they support WinMo6.1.
Anyone with T-mobile able to sync an exchange account on 3G/GPRS?
Would you mind sharing parameters?
I could live with the Touch Pro with 2G until they release a better rom/radio, but I can't live without push email/exchange!
By the way, there is no problem with the server itself or the exchange parameters, it synchronizes fine on wifi, so it looks like it's a touch pro (works on Vario III), winmo6.1 (works on Winmo 6.0) or t-mobile (works on wifi) issue!
Thanks for your help!
PS: before you ask, I did a hard reset to make sure there is no problem with third party software, this is after a hard reset...

Use the settings the connection manager applies automatically....untick the proxy server and you should be good to go, i also am on tmobile UK, same settings and use an exchange server. The proxy has been messing which alot of stuff recently, im sure theyve changed something on it since this happened on my Hermes aswell.
Perhaps flash the newer radio onto your Raph....update to HardSPL first then flash Radio 1.02.25.31 to your device from the wiki pages. Read everything to the letter and ul be fine.

Ive had some improvment with the reception yes, calls dont seem to drop as much, it works fine with tmobile.
it is possible.
Hi, I got a pro, use it on the dutch tmob netwerk, both G and H work fine with the (free) mail2web exchange service.
t-mobile uses standard proxy to bring webpages faster .. unfortionatly it doesnt map all other ports so youtube and such wont work either.. it keeps trying to connect when one plays a video. since it is not neccesary to have a proxyserver it is best practice to turn it off.

Hi MrVanx!
I've tried to setup my BT Pan as usual with my Vaio TZ11, and although the pairing and setup goes fine, when I try to connect I get a "connection is denied" error. Does the BT PAN work out of the box on the TP or do you need a tweak like on the Kaiser?
Sorry I'm afraid this was a "RTFM" case...
As the internet sharing option has disappeared from the comm manager, I assumed the connection was automatic...
Of course you need to launch internet sharing and select BT PAN...
It works great, I get 400-500kbps down and 300-400kbps down, 130-140ms ping. Far from my home broadband, but still good enough.
I tried with my Vario III, I get about the same results (with 3 bars on HSDPA on Kaiser, 4 on TP).
So two questions now:
1) Do you get better performance with T-Mobile UK on the Touch Pro (I'm in Salisbury)
2) Any way to bring Internet Sharing back to comm manager?
This worked for me
Man I wasted 30mins - had already read this post before I ordered and forgotten. XDA dev is the best!

use this cab..it adds a new connection named ATT GPRS which has a different dns..i have been using this since i found it and have never gone back because by utilizing these dns servers you get much better speedtest results and it seems to never have any connection problems..thing is you gootta use a tool like advanced config and go into connection settings in the program and disable medianet from being used as a connection because if both are active your device randomly chooses which to connect with so you gotta make sure medianet is no longer active..here is the cab

i guess next time it hsppens make sure the feature is the correct one on your account. call your regional account executive to check it out.
it happens from time to time because when medianet is on for quite sometime, it can't authenticate the phone. Easy fix is just to just disconnect from medianet then try it again. You can do this by sliding to settings and clicking on "communications." After that, just turn off data connection and reconnect.
